Food and water being used offline

I think it's a nice feature. Think of the time you are logged out as your character being asleep, so in a way it's realistic to be more hungry and thirsty when you come back. Finding food and water in dayZ is not very hard, so just make sure you always have at least one food and one drink item in your inventory before you log out.

    Do *NOT* Spam Connections

Thanks for your post Mojo! I've also been trying to explain people about this when waiting. There seems to be some people spreading misinformation that disconnecting and reconnecting somehow lets you join in faster. Some people have even started arguing about this when I've explained them that it only makes things worse. Nice idea! Something like this on all dayZ servers would get the message through to people who keep doing it.

    Voip?

Yes, ArmA 2 developers are working on a fix which hopefully will fix the problems with the built-in voice chat's direct communication channel. The quality of built-in voice chat depends on a server's vonCodecQuality setting (server can set it between 1 and 10). On higher settings, 7 and above, the quality is quite good. TeamSpeak is a good option too, but for those who want maximum immersion, direct communication is probably the best choice.

    Voip?

The game has a built-in VOIP as well, which I think is way superior to any TeamSpeak/Mumble/Ventrilo. While it's not superior by it's quality, the built-in VOIP has a "direct communication" channel, in which you hear the voice in 3D space coming from the person who is speaking. You can also see his lips moving when he speaks, and voice fades over distance realistically. This makes it much more immersive than an external voice chat program. We use this in-game VOIP with the group I play with. Unfortunately it doesn't work perfectly at the moment. It works most of the time if you all spawn next to each other in the game. So, if you meet up with someone, all you have to do is go back to game lobby and reconnect, and you have good chances the direct communication VOIP works.

    DayZ and Basic Human Nature

I tend to avoid killing any other players, and always try to communicate with them (often even with bandits). If things appear to go hostile, I rather move away and disengage than confront and end up killing him or dying. One reason I do this is because I like the aspect of communicating, co-operating and helping the new survivors. I like realism and I think that is the way I would behave in real life if I would ever end up in such a situation. I think there is way too much random killings, and way too few people who are helpful and want to co-operate. Probably it is more attractive to just kill others, or maybe people are just too scared and don't read the text chat. Once the voice chat in the direct communication channel is fixed, this will change, as you can shout your intentions to the other. I'd like to see the ratio of good co-operative people vs bandits to be about 10/1, but now it seems that many new players just go and shoot anything that moves, without even attempting to communicate, even if you tell them "Friendly!" or "Don't shoot, I will not shoot you!".

    GAMEBREAKER coverage

Very good video! I think you covered the most important things about dayZ in a nice and entertaining way! However, the game play video showed in the video was with very poor graphics, and made the game look old. With graphics settings at "very high", the game looks beautiful.
  10. It must be that the boundingBox of those tree objects has been set to be quite much higher than their actual physical size. I've seen that before in some other objects in ArmA 2' date=' when checking bounding box sizes. I'm pretty sure that isFlatEmpty will only check the boundingbox size of the objects around and determine the result according to that. Also remember that bounding box is a rectangular box area, and the tent placement requires you to have at least 1 meter distance from that box. rocket could try to reduce that 1 meter to 0.5 or even to just 0.1. That would make it a bit easier. The syntax of BIS_fnc_findSafePos actually looks very similar to isFlatEmpty, so it probably uses the same logic for finding a safe position. You could use that but it wouldn't return a position that is in front of the player, so the tent might be placed quite far from what the player intended, and the same restrictions most likely apply.
  11. If you all read what I wrote above, you will understand the mechanic behind the tent placement. By understanding that, you can find nice covered places where to put it. Just make sure there are no tree branches right above you.

Why does this game have so many idiots?

I've noticed the same. I've recently bumped into a lot of people who appear to be new (makarov and survivor skin), and shoot at anyone on sight. Trying to communicate with them through side channel or direct has no effect, they don't even try to respond. They just want to shoot you. Typing "Don't shoot, I'm not going to kill you!" or anything like that seems to have no effect.
  13. I checked the dayZ code. It uses default ArmA 2 command isFlatEmpty with minimal distance from another object set to 1 meter for tent and 0.5 meters for camp fire. Those tree objects in the game include all the branches etc which makes the command consider them to take much more space than just the trunk.

IF this was an actual game...

    - One time payment - Community developed - Community servers But why not have it continue to be a mod for ArmA 2 and ask BI to pay you something extra for the increase of sales that dayZ is causing.

    Player count per server plans

I'd love to see bigger (100+ players) servers as well, but I think it will be very heavy on server's bandwidth. Even as the zombies are handled locally by clients, the local zombie positions must be uploaded to server from all clients, and then sent back to all other clients. Bigger servers might need to decrease the zombie numbers because of that. As for losing the nice feeling of desolation, it won't happen easily. Chernarus is such a big map that we'll have to go much higher, to maybe 500-1000 players, before it starts to feel crowded.

    About Zombie Numbers

Why did you create a new thread if there are a lot of them already? Why not just reply in the existing threads with same topic? Now this topic is scattered all over the place' date=' and your new thread makes it even more scattered. You could had for example replied your opinion of this subject in one of these threads: The New Zombie Count is AWESOME New zombies are great! Good zombie amount.... with more ammo? Finally, zombies in between towns! Why more zombies is just what this mod needs More Zs = <3 Patch 1.5.7 and this being an Alpha and fucking zombie spawns I just think the forum becomes very messy and hard to read if everyone posts a new thread about the same subject.

Keep Zed Number As-Is; Change Spawning Algorithm

+1 Current number of zombies is good. Double the respawn time and increase the distance from player where zombies can't spawn, and it will be perfect.

The Official Unofficial Bandit Removal Petition

There are many ways to avoid killing other players. People should meet weapons lowered to show they are not threat. If you see someone pointing weapon at you' date=' you can take cover and ask them to lower weapon. You can run and hide, etc. I understand it can be hard to recover if you become bandit after killing someone for self defense. Perhaps for this there should be some kind of way to reset the status (though not on every respawn). Perhaps player could be given a limited number of (such as 3) resets. If player ends up being bandit for more times than that, then he obviously is just abusing the ability to reset and should not be given more chances. Like I mentioned in above messages, without some consequence of killing players, and method of recognizing the playerkillers, there won't be any of that. There won't be any interaction or trust. Not even betrayal, since you need to have interaction and trust before betrayal can happen.

The Official Unofficial Bandit Removal Petition

What I mean by punishment is a consequence for killing other players. When there is a consequence, people will think twice before killing another player (except those who have chosen the bandit-route). I'm not saying that PvP is bad, if that is how you understood me. PvP is a very nice part of the game, but don't forget that the main idea of the game is to be a zombie survival game. In a world where majority of population has turned into zombies, and you are one of the few survivors alive, it makes sense to try to co-operate with fellow survivors and try to face this threat (zombies) together. Co-operating with fellow survivors requires you to meet strangers and putting some trust in them. I find this to be a very important aspect of a zombie survival game. Having a some of the survivors being bandits is a nice and realistic twist. However, if there is no punishment (=consequence) for turning bandit and killing others, more and more people will do that for smallest reasons. Moreover, if there is no way to recognize those who have turned bandits, it will soon start to become best tactic to just kill every stranger on sight. This will effectively kill the whole aspect of survivor co-operation with strangers. It makes no sense to try to co-operate or communicate with strangers anymore, if a likely result of that is getting killed. Not many will want to play a "good guy" when doing so puts you in a huge disadvantage over the other players. Playing a good guy would have a severe consequence: dying all the time. Playing as a bandit and killing / backstabbing would only have benefits without any consequences. That kind of imbalance will eventually drive every "good guy" away from the game, leaving bandits fighting each other in an endless deathmatch.

The Official Unofficial Bandit Removal Petition

Those bandits who imagine that removing bandit skin would allow them to walk in with other survivors, and pretend to be one of them, are just wrong. The consequence of removing the ability to recognize bandits would only result in survivors considering EVERYONE as bandits and shooting other survivors on sight. Bandits would still get shot on sight as they are now. Thus, only difference would be the end of survivor co-operation as no one would trust each other after getting backstabbed a few times by an undercover bandit. The only result would be decrease in player numbers as most of the simulation minded players would simply not enjoy playing the game anymore as it would had turned into a deatmatch where everyone kills everyone else. If the skin change is removed, there needs to be some other way to punish playerkillers and a way to recognize them.
  21. Wüstenfuchs (DayZ)

    Should we scrap bandit models?

Removing bandit skins would destroy the survivor co-operation, which I think is an important part of the mod. Only survivor co-operation remaining after scrapping the bandit skin would be clans / communities co-operating among each other and never with any strangers. It is hard enough now to start trusting a stranger and co-operating with him (as many survivor-skinned ends up back-stabbing you too). If bandit skins are removed, many will choose to kill other survivors on sight, especially as it will no longer have any real consequences.
