Side channel has already been removed in DayZ. Once everyone is forced to install the Beta patch in DayZ version 1.7.1, there won't' be side channel for anyone. Voice & Text Communication -
Beta patch is for ArmA 2. What you need is the latest version of DayZ code, which you can download from here. Unpack the rar files and place the pbo files into your @DayZ folder.

Question about the way logging out/bases work...

Tents and cars are local to a server. Only thing that moves across is your character and it's inventory. Items that are dropped to the ground are also local to server and seem to remain quite long time (at least half an hour or so). -
Unfortunately there is no way of telling it as it is not a mandatory element in the server naming format. The regular/veteran/etc difficulty level also doesn't mean anything because server admin can turn crosshair off in any of those levels. I'm trying to get this changed by a suggestion of changes in the naming format here: Server Naming.

Meat must be in your inventory (not backpack). Every meat that you have in inventory will cook when you select "Cook Meat" action at the fire.

Does it count those who are not playing the game? Or does it calculate only the time that is spent in-game? Some might have been alive for days by only logging in once in a few days for short time. -
