Breaking legs seems fine but we should be able to make a split and hobble along. -

Share some tips for those of us who are new to Arma and DayZ

Use the third person view when you're not shooting. (enter key on number pad) Jump to first person by clicking your right mouse button. Zoom in further by holding the right mouse button down after you've entered first person view. First person view is great and all but not always useful. -
^ what they said plus: Press the Enter key on your number pad. Now you're in third person and life gets easier. You can quickly jump to first person by right clicking your mouse. Once in this view you can hold down the right mouse button and get a tighter zoom on your sights.

Which is why the hatchet is the most underrated weapon in the game. Quiet, stealthy, effective. It takes a while to learn its range but its just over the range of a standing zombie. You can creep up behind one and hit him right before he detects you and breaks into a run. It's also possible to lure zombies away from the pack and kill him safely. Each gun has various loudness so choose your weapons wisely. Most of all, don't panic. (new guy tip: pick up hatchet, go to gear, right click on hatchet, select "remove from toolbelt" and now its a weapon)

I honestly feel bad for you guys who are having trouble. Once you graduate from Zombie 101 you can start to worry about the real predators and become one when needed. That's when the game actually gets challenging. That's when my blood starts pumping. Those are the moments I love in the game. Not knowing if this extremely dangerous player had spotted me yet, debating whether it's worth taking the shot or risk letting them go and having them see me as I make my retreat. Zombies are dumb play things compared to another player that's equally as paranoid as me. (i play to survive) Honest question: How often, if ever, are you using the third person view?

I don't even trust the clan I belong to. Not sure why OP chose to trust random people. This game isn't for everyone but don't worry. I'm sure EA or some other shady publisher already has some fly by night or cookie cutter developer hard at work with making a DayZ knockoff that won't let you kill other players, has a smaller map, super awesome pre-order goodies, day one DLC, lets you choose the gear you want when you spawn, and has game breaking pay-to-win in game store.

I'm more worried about all the dead Google links to this forum. It looks bad and makes finding info hard.

Visibility only comes into play when a zombie is looking in your direction. You can have a visibility of 60 and run right by a zombie as long as he's not looking at you. It's either their client or they're a week behind me in gameplay time. I'm still new but I had no problem adjusting to the zombies new vision and have no problem putting down zombies with a hatchet in an open field. I'm anything but geared. I spent most of the night running around with a hatchet praying for a handgun. I ran through multiple towns to meet up with people and never got hit by a single zombie. I had a winchester earlier in the day, put three bullets into a player, ran around a house, cutting the corners tight, took several turns and lost all aggro. I then looted the body. Easier than ever. My point is, it's not gear but it does have a little to do with skill, patience, awareness, and a little bit of experience. People are whining about the aggro now but just a week ago every zombie in a town would magically hear you just because you accidentally ran inside a building. now, they don't do that. Now, they lose interest if they can't find you. Easier. People just need to pay attention to the zeds new behavior and everything will be fine. Here's another question for everyone having trouble, WHERE are you playing? What cities, towns, areas are you running around when this happens?
-
Like some of us have said, you can lose zombies by running around a corner or two. It's very easy to lose them in the big cities and this isn't an exploit of their pathing. This has to do with their newly acquired eyeballs. You can no longer walk through a horde of zombies. You guys must be doing something seriously wrong if you can't shake a zombie.
-
I'd love to watch you play then. Zombies are easier now than they were before the patch. I can lose whole hordes of them in wooded areas or by running around the towns. I can run, not sprint, and never get touched by them. If I get tired of hearing them moan and scream I can turn around and put a single bullet into each of them. I can run out in the open near a town without drawing more than one or two and they're easy to lose. I just can't imagine what you're doing wrong. Are you actually sprinting or just running? What guns are you using if any? You know you can use the hatchet as a weapon right? One hit kills on zeds. Did you install the dayz mod update AND the arma2 beta patch? Are you LOOKING at the zombies and where they're going before approaching? I seriously can't figure out what I'm doing right and what you're doing wrong. Seriously, let me see you play. Roll Fraps if you can. If not, pm me and we'll try to coordinate. Also, any chance you're using a not-so-legit copy of the game?
-
Hi guise, why isn't this alpha as stable as a game that has been out for a full year?

/thread?

You know you can still play the game right? Loot in tents isn't what the game is even about.

I haven't had trouble doing this during the day. I just stand-run around a couple times and run out straight towards something else that will block their view and keep that between me and where they are as I run away. If any follow, I repeat but that's somewhat rare. This definitely works good at night but I've had no trouble losing zombies this way during the day. The only time I crouch-run now is when I'm approaching a town or if I'm expecting players to be in the area. Another trick I find helpful is to approach a town or structure like a barn and go prone before I get too close. I watch the area for a while to make sure the zombies have spawned and no one is around. The zombies will wonder away from the area if you give them some time. This also lets you see what direction they're looking and where they're going so you can find the best approach to any given area. It's trickier but their hearing is way down and I'm not swarmed if I accidentally hit forward twice while in a building and do a split second sprint when getting up from prone. I've also lost zombies in the wooden house with the only one entrance (but two doors) by going prone behind the table while they're still in the first doorway. You guys are not running on concrete right? Are you guys using the third person when exploring? Are you running up to towns or are you approaching with caution? I only ask because I was riding a bike last night and that's the only time I saw tons of zombies coming at me from any distance. The rest of the time they were extremely easy to deal with.

Do you think Rocket is trying to make a cultural point with 1.7.2?
sixbarns replied to Captain Q's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
No. I think a lot of people were excited to try the update and swarmed any server that had recently updated. Then all the gear got picked over in no time flat and anyone coming in afterwards was finding whatever rubbish that was left over. I had trouble finding a gun last night as well. I played for over an hour before finding something with a trigger. The further north I got the more gear I found. I don't think this was a coincidence. The shoot on site guys very likely have more interest in camping and banditing (eh?) the high traffic spots, come from a standard shooter background, or have some gear they don't want stolen by a noob with a hatchet. If you have nothing to lose, teaming up is easy. Some people think the game is meant to be a KDR fest and fail to experience or even realize the full potential of the game. Each life is a story in Dayz. Your story is only going to be as good as the decisions you make. I always assumed the zig-zagging was there to make them harder to shoot. They'd be way too easy to kill if they ran straight for you and stopped. They also appear to be glitchy but it looks like its just the placeholder animations they use. -
Okay, you're getting agro. Now, RUN. You can actually lose zombies now by running. You can literally run around a barn, pine tree, or bush several times and lose the zombies. They just have to lose sight of you for a set amount of time. This makes life easier as you don't need to find a barn or other enterable structure to run through or a hill to run down. Just pay attention to where the zombies are looking, how visible you are (found in debug box), and pay attention to how loud you are. It's pretty simple guys.

I won't even leave the coast without morphine unless I feel like gambling. The new patch definitely made it a bit easier to avoid broken legs though. Before it was almost a guarantee.

Zombies are better than ever. They don't have super hearing and they can only see you IF they're looking in your direction. What's the problem?

Everyday is an adventure.

Respawn(suicide) and log out before you choose your character's sex. Pick another server entirely and then create your character there. Worth a shot?

Try not to sound so whiny in your posts. People will be more likely to help you if you ask questions rather than complain. The game has a sharp learning curve so you shouldn't join in and expect to dominate the game right away. Nothing is handed to you. You have to learn where the weapons are likely to be and why they might not be there. You're going to die a lot. There are tons of guides and walkthrough videos to get you going. Read and watch them. There is also several wikis dedicated to this game. You should check them out. There are also several maps that show you where to look. Here is one of many: http://www.dayzdb.com/map It relatively easy to find out where you are as when you first spawn the game tells you on the bottom right side of the corner. Barns and little sheds are great places to find a hatchet. It is probably the best weapon and most underused and underrated in the game. Once you pick it up you need to click on it and choose "remove from tool belt". This makes the hatchet your main weapon. Barns are also great places to find shotguns, winchesters, crossbows, ammo, food, drink, and other items. Nearly every enterable house will have a weapon of sort. If the server your on has yet to provide you with a weapon, find a better server.

why cry over getting killed by players..
sixbarns replied to lzugl's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
In real life we can jump to other dimensions to get a better position on a target or quickly stop existing when under fire without dying. These dimension also have a lot of different stuff laying on the ground so have your pick! Oh, this dimension doesn't have the gun you want, just check the next one! Don't use real life to prop up your argument about a video game. No matter how realistic the game strives to be. Besides, people put in hours just trying to find gear in a picked over server only to get murdered by some guy whose been server hopping all day. It can get frustrating. (People strip servers of loot and then dump the goods on their home server. This leaves nothing for noobies who have never seen loot on a fresh server) Just wait. Once the noobs learn to look for recently reset servers things are going to get messy. -
Biggest problems in Dayz fixed with one simple solution
sixbarns replied to gibonez's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Not everyone stays on one server. Teams do more than anyone but there are a lot more loners and trying to find a good server can be tricky. What would happen to someone who leaves one server, spawns on the coast of a new server with all the gear, then goes back to the first server? Does he spawn on the coast or where he was when he first dc'd? Does that mean he now has two characters on different servers with identical gear? Did he get a free teleport away from danger? Maybe this idea needs a bit more work. This wouldn't stop people who disconnect during combat either. This also removes the entire concept of this game being persistent and mmo-ish. -
Can server owners trace vehicles?
