  1. I am not a server admin, so I don't know the workings of DayZ on the backend. What I am looking for is an explanation of the difference between a server restart and reset, in regards specifically to DayZ.

My group and I had finally found a server that seemed stable. According to online stats it had been up and running for months and had been running DayZ from the get go. We decide to make this our camp server and begin scavenging. Over the course of a week or so we built up quite an impressive camp. We had a decent sized tent city and several vehicles. We play EST and the server would restart once each day before we got on. All of our stuff saved after each server restart. Vehicles and tents kept their place and their content.

My group and I play through the night. Around 8AM this morning, we are driving along and BAM "Connection Lost". No warning, no red or yellow chain break. Just disconected. I was a little concerened right away given that we were driving along in a car at high speeds when the connection was lost. I figured the server is doing its normal server restart. We wait a few minutes and we are able to get back into the lobby and then a few minutes later we are able to get into the game.

After we get back in, we are both in the same spot that we were before the server restarts, sans the car we were driving in. At this point I am just HOPING the car is where we left it in our camp, the last placed we saved it.

We trek all the way back to our base camp and EVERYTHING is gone. So, this is where my question comes in. The server restarted evry day before now. This event appeard to be just another server restart, but this time everything went away. So I am calling it a server reset.

My question is, what happened to make all our stuff dissapear after days of use and saving, and why?

  2. Possibly, but I don't think that's it. I always sort by ping and play on the lowest latency servers. I said "most" as some of their servers are fast (maybe dedicated boxes?), but as a general rule, I find they do load slower than other hosting company's servers from some reason. Again, just my impression as a player. My suspicion is that it's the number of instances they run on a server or possibly their peering at some locations.

I guess what I'd recommend is that if you're looking for a hosting provider that, as a player, connect to several of their servers and just see what your general impression is and then come to your own conclusion. I already know the provider I'm going to use based on my experience of logging into dozens (probably over a 100) servers.

    Who would that be?

  3. When you order shared DayZ hosting you're getting a single DayZ server that's hosted on a dedicated server that we (HFB) owns. The "shared" part of this is that the dedicated server is shared between different customers, each with their own DayZ server. You seem to know what a VPS is so I'll give you an example using those.

Think of the shared DayZ server like a VPS. You would have multiple VPS nodes on a single server box.

Adam is the one I spoke with from HFB, and I was looking for a description similar to that. To clarify, the difference between this type of DayZ instance hosting and true VPS being that all instances share an OS and there is no RDP/root level access to the system?

  4. I am looking to host my own DayZ server. After doing some searching, I have come across many options. HFB Servers is one option. They have a plan customized for DayZ hosting, but utilize a shared instance style (not VPS) of hosting for DayZ. I have not used this kind of hosting before and was hoping to find another server admin that is or has used this hosting server?

  5. I was under the impression that other players could loot your tents.

Which is what I suspect is happening.

No, I don't think so. Like I said, only 1 or 2 of my 5 tents would glitch, loosing everything inside....while the tent right next too with matching amo for a gun in the one that glitched or even having a better gun was left alone. A raider would take the best from any of them, not clean out one entirely leaving better stuff in the tent right next to it.

  6. Hi all,

I wanted to pose some questions about tents.

    (Back Story)

I have recently setup a small tent city that consists of 5 tents. Over the course of the 4 or 5 days I have been using these tents, I have had two tents get wiped clean of all inventory on two separate occasions. I have read that tents can sometimes glitch, loosing everything inside of it. However, i have had this happen twice on two different tents in just a couple of days. These tents were loaded with guns, amo, food....tons of extra stuff. Gathering up and storing supplies is kinda my thing. Spending hours gathering this stuff and transporting back to the tents, only to have the tent complete wiped is frustrating as hell.

    (Questions)

In your experience, how frequent is this kind of glitch? Is my experience normal, or is it just bad luck on my part that happened to me the way it did?

Do some servers tend to be worse than others for glitching out tents?

  7. +1 to "Switch to axe, without using the bag space in the backpack?

The axe being the only real melee weapon in the game and the only real silent way to kill a zombie, it should be easier to use. I hope eventually a melee side arm slot is added, similar to what we have for pistols.

I think this works for the sake of realism and tactics. In a real world scenario a survivor could very truly carry a hatchet or machete that they could pull out for a silent kill, slinging they're rifle vs putting it in their pack.

  8. I completely agree. I got my start with this game just after the patch that removed the starting gun. I have no reference for how easier that would have made starting, but, what I can say is that I agree that it was done and makes the game much much more challenging.

What I do not agree with is the lack of Melee weapons as you have pointed out. If the point of this game is realism, then the first thing a survivor would do when seeing a zombie is find something to defend oneself with.

Hell....even a push or fist fight function would be useful.

  9. Same fracking problem....15 hours in on a character....tons of awesome stuff.....log out last night. Log in this morning and my character is gone. I get prompted to choose male or female and start over.

    How does this happen!?!?

  10. Why do you automatically assume it's an admin dicking around?

For the thousandth time' date=' admins do NOT have the power to kill players with commands or spawn in nukes.

Can people now please stop blaming us admins every time something bad happens? Do you know how fun it is paying for a server so you guys can play, then getting blamed every time something goes wrong or a hacker kills you?

    [/quote']

If you read the post, I did not assume anything. Logically it was one of two thing, bug or abuse. I made this post to figure out which. I did not outright assume it was an admin. I don't know what power the admins have or do no have. Given that I stated in my original post that I am new to this game, why would you assume I know anything about what admins can or cannot do. I appreciate the folks that host, pay for, and run these servers, but that does not mean that if given the power there won't be a bad apple in the bunch that abuse it.

A hacker nuked your server get used to it as of yet there is no way to prevent the hackers from doing what they do.

Is this accurate? Is this a known bug seen on other servers? What do you mean when you say they nuked it? The server wasn't restarted, as most everyone was able to re-spawn immediately. Is there a back-end command to kill off all players on the server?

  11. I only recently started playing Day Z about 48 hours ago. I love it! I'm addicted. I had an issue on Chicago 56 however, an issue that genuinely concerns me.

After several deaths, I was finally able to get my barrings and spent about 6 hours working on a new character. 4 of those 6 hours were spent on the Chicago 56 server between 10pm to 2am on 6/29. Around 2am (GMT -4:00)on 6/29 while playing, my screen flashes and I get the "You are dead" screen. I am shocked to say the least given no zombies were around. Then I see in the lower left about 30 names scroll down all saying "player" is dead. Then those players start chiming in and a large purge of angered "WTF just happened!", "Who did that!", "Why did we all die?", etc. ensues. I realize that it seems that everyone on the server was killed instantly and had to start from scratch.

I honestly spend about 10 minutes mourning the death of my character, I was doing so well and was extremely excited at the progress I had made, and then another 10 minutes deciding if I even wanted to start over at all. Over 6 hours wasted and for nothing at no fault to my own.

Even though this happened about 24 hours ago, I was encouraged by a friend to make a post (since I don't see where anyone else did), and try to get to the bottom of what happened.

I just want to know if this was some giant glitch/bug, or some admin jacking around with the players on the server.

    Thanks for a great game!
