I'm not sure as i don't pay much attention to it, but i think the text that show you where you are when you spawn, also tells you how many days you have survived.

I didn't even spawn, i was alive and well and proned behind a tree. Suddenly i'm high up in the air falling to my death. Oh, and this was not when logging on either. Just middle of the game, outta nowhere.

Announcing your presence and to kill or not to kill

Im fairly new, but the few times i've ran into other players, i'd try to stay hidden, but close enough to ask them if they're friendly. It has worked out well a few times, whenever i have been killed by another player, i never even knew they were there until it was too late... :( -
I have the same problem. Luckily i have met players willing to communicate via text. Otherwise i try to stay away from people.
