  1. @ Sixteen18 and KingRobolo: Thank you for your well founded replies, I really appreciate that. Personally, I study sociology and psychology myself as a part of my course of study, but I'll admit that those studies are not as in-depth in their nature as your respective fields of study appear to be. They mainly deal with aspects of cooperation, in- and exclusion of highly different people and behaviour within groups in a working society. This is probably the reason why I did not think of ingroups and outgroups, but was biased towards overlapping social contexts within an existing society, which of course obviously is not the case in DayZ. Mh' date=' you mean it can never get worse? I don't know about that, but as I said: I am not in your position, you know more than I, presumably. Yet, being screwed up from the madness around you is something I would like to see being represented ingame. The player obviously isn't irritated by what he sees, but the character he plays should be. I know you wanted to avoid writing a text wall, but I'd be highly interested what brought you to your conclusions. True, I think I maybe focused too much on the negative aspects of killing.

    I'd say there's no right or wrong, just variations in language that differ due to changes over time in culture and location. There's words here in northern Germany that they never heard of in Bavaria, but I would not accuse them of making a mistake using their local variant of something. My point was that it is unlikely that Germans introduced the "zee", as they use the harder "zed" as well, whereas French is a little softer overall, so might better fit your theory. Nonetheless I'll stick with "zed" as well, I just like it better.

    Well, in German the letter 'Z' is pronounced 'tsett' which is a lot closer to "zed" than to "zee". That would speak against your theory. Yes, but not when the German is pronouncing ENGLISH words. Think arnie when he first went to America in conan the barbarian, provincial as fuck. Allot of immigrants into America added many words and ways of talking differently, the Italians,the Irish, the Germans, the French and obviously the English. At the end of the day the Americans are wrong because it's ZED not ZEE, just like it's colour or flavour, harbour, honour, humour, labour, neighbour, rumour etc why drop the U ? There are many words they changed because people couldn't spell in the 1800's, they were too busy killing Indians to learn at the time, stealing their land and gold, then they turned on each-other and had a civil war then united to finish off the Indians, you Americans make me lol. I'm just saying that your theory does not work as well as you'd want it to. While Arnorld Schwarzenegger is an entertaining (Austrian) example, he is not necessarily a very fitting one. You see, when Germans say "zee" in English, they actually try to pronounce "the". Because the dental fricative "th" is not part of their mother tongue and they have no sound close to it, they switch to this other pronounciation, exchanging it for a soft [z]. "Zed" however is very close their own 'Z' (tsett), so they would not bother changing the vowel from an [ɛ] to an , as thy usually also do not change their hard [ts] to the soft [z]. As German is a very hard sounding language and they usually have problems adjusting to the softer English tone, I find it far more likely that the change (or rather variation) in pronounciation was imported from the French language. Don't be so aggressive in your tone against America (I'm German btw, hi!), it does not help. I never accused you of being ignorant. Also this is probably the wrong part of the forum to discuss linguistics or American history (as much as there would be to discuss), so we should leave it at that. :D

    I pronounce it "DayZed" as well, although it's not the official pronounciation. It just sounds a littler harder to me than the soft "zee", plus zombies are often referred to as "zeds" not as "zees". But that's just personal preference.

  8. I'm not changing anything, you see, I can't. I'm just saying, that if everyone is bragging about their super realistic behavior in this near-realistic environment, there should be actual realism in there on all levels of survival, not just the weaponry. To players who just like the realistic weaponry and overall control in DayZ I recommend playing Arma2 and even more Project Reality in both of it's forms. It's challenging, you get to kill a lot and it is highly rewarding without having to worry about zombies and supplies at all.
  9. Got KOS by snipers 6 or 7 times now, one of which I first said "hi" to, might have triggered his badass killer instinct. One time I teamed up with s/o (Hi "Roman") but then we got KOS from snipers. The other night I met a guy who first wanted to kill me with his makarov (shot me as I laid in the grass doing exactly nothing), but stopped when I cursed at him like crazy, what the flying f*ck he was thinking and whether he REALLY thought I was threat to anyone with my stupid hatchet. He apologized and actually even had the decency to give me morphine but then went on lone-wolfing (good luck, "Deadman"). There's very very few decent people in game. Most players you'll encounter think they get a prize, weapon unlock or cake* for 50 kills or something like that, so they'll be dumb, unfriendly and obnoxiously proud of their imaginary 1337 5|{!11Z. Imho it is rewarding to try to talk to everyone you meet, though. A lot more interesting then left-klicking. *It's a lie folks, don't buy it!

  11. Well stress is a sort of "debuff" and a logical and natural one at that. It's a last-resort reaction to overstretch your abilities temporarily, but of course that backfires if you are under stress constantly, as you waste energy. Thinking about it, actually, maybe everyone should be a mess from the beginning, I mean: you're alone, there's zeds everywhere, you've lost your former life style, friends and family and you're not equipped to get anything done... That's pretty desperate. No one would handle a situation like this this way: "Oh a ruthless undead predator staring at me with his hollow eye sockets, while screaming and groaning. Meh, 'seen worse." So going by that logic you shouldn't be able to stay perfectly calm from the beginning, it should take days, if not weeks, to adjust to your situation. Maybe something similar to the system in "Amnesia", "Dark Corners Of The Earth" or "Eternal Darkness": experiencing horror (murder, zeds, infection, pain...) damages your psyche in various ways, which impairs your vision and at some point hurts you physically. You can increase your mental health by lighting a fire, or other "reassuring" actions including alcohol as temporary measure (including addiction and the disadvantages), drugs or maybe a "conversation" action or so, between players. There won't have to be hallucinations or crazy stuff like that as a punishment, just a basic and perceivable uneasyness in the player's character's movement and aim, that reflects their trouble coping with the situation. Apart from that, I don't think adding more incentives to group play is going to solve anything. There's a lot of rewards from playing within a group already, but these rewards are just a bonus, the cherry on top. Right now you can survive on your own very easily, when it should not be that easy. It should be imperative for a survivor to try and find a group, not just "nice to have". Players should be, to a certain degree, dependent on other players as people are in real life.

  13. I'll counter that question with a question: In this apocalyptic world with cold blooded killers and zombies, what would encourage you to kill your maybe last potential friend? But that would be the question for the real world. Ingame there's just no negative outcome to being a an *sshole, so everyone is one. People are to weak to withstand the temptation of being a jerk as it's both easy and rewarding and go out of their way to justify their behavior. It's ridiculous. :D

    What do you get out of kos? What provides thrill and tension in this? I can absolutely understand this in arma2, or project reality, where you actually have to outsmart your enemy, have to be faster, better and more effective. However, why people shoot anyone (even, or especially unarmed noobs) they meet in a post-apocalyptic survival setting is beyond me. Please explain, I truly do not get that. I always thought the thrill in a survival game comes from the interaction with other players not from avoiding that interaction. Thanks.
