  1. I have a thread with all my videos in the New Player's Section over here: http://forums.dayzgame.com/index.php?/topic/159251-merinos-in-depth-video-guides-updated-jan-7th-how-much-do-i-really-have-to-eat-and-drink/ I posted the consumption rates here too, assuming that they would also be useful to figure out more stuff - not exactly what new players would do. It would be - but it is disabled in the current build. It can still be found in the game files which is why you found the information about it. No need to sit down whatsoever at the moment.
  2. Yes, I'm afraid it does. A quick summary: there is no such thing as a food value. There is energy, which you can think of as being calories, and a water, which is the hydration of your body. There is water (i.e. hydration) in many food items and there is energy (i.e. calories) in one of the drinks: soda. Yes, foods are typically high on energy/calories and drinks are typically high on water/hydration, but don't use them as interchangable synonyms. To formulate the rates differently: - while active, you lose 20 units of hydration and burn 15 calories per minute - while idle, you lose 8 units of hydration and burn 4 calories per minute Easier to understand now? I also have a video dedicated to how energy, water, stomach, food, drinks, regeneration and all those things work and how they are interconnected. It's pretty long, but it may help you understand a bit better: DayZ Standalone In-Depth Guide: Hunger, Thirst, Regenerating Blood and Health
  3. Ohhh I loves me some science, you're invited to drop by at any time and bring more facts to the table that exceed my limited expertise :D 15 minutes on the A28? I think I'll have to make sure you don't try to make it in that amount of time after the copious amount of drinks :P
  4. But in all seriousness, a valid point. I can absolutely understand people who would rather enjoy the experience without being aware of all the inner workings that remind them that this is just an artificial simulation. Ignorance (and please don't read that with a negative connotation) is bliss after all and allows you to focus your mind on the experience rather than being distracted by attempts to predict and anticipate. But then again, I think there's an innate human, nay, life's urge to learn from negative experiences. "Hm, this situation was disadvantageous, I wonder how I can avoid that in the future." If a form of life didn't have that instinct, it would not exist anymore by now. So I think it's only natural to think about how to understand the given facts of reality - or virtuality in the case of games - to improve, or even perhaps save, your life. In reality we come equipped with everything we need to comprehend situations of lesser complexity. And for everything beyond that, there's science. In DayZ however, we have only an extremely limited set of sensory capabilities: namely the fairly ambiguous status texts and messages with an extremely low granularity. By breaking it down to the numbers and converting them into something we can comprehend, all we're doing is adding another layer of sensory capability. A better feeling for the rules of the simulated environment that we would be able to make out intuitively in reality. Make the black box that is your virtual body a little less opaque. While I understand that knowing too much about something may take away the excitement and the thrill of the unknown, I personally find it no less exciting to be able to tell why things happen when they happen. Takes none of the entertainment value away for me. Quite the opposite: the more I understand something, the more I can enjoy its complexity. Seeing how one tiny gear affects the other below the surface and just how the whole system... works is just as much fun to me as is finding and treating injured players or handing out can openers and canteens to newspawns or just meeting and talking to people. And I'm sure that a large portion of players wouldn't consider any of these to be "fun".
  5. ... that's enough beans for 246.4 minutes of running or 924 minutes of standing around :P
  6. Two new videos: Water and energy consumption worked out How much do I really need to eat and drink?
  7. You're welcome :) Well I actually don't get to "play" all that much, mostly occupied with thinking about and doing experiments in my "gaming time"... but then again, it's really just a different form of entertainment to me.

    Damaged food items

I'm afraid your friend rather became a victim of this: http://forums.dayzgame.com/index.php?/topic/160868-poisoning-food

    Blurred screen, please help.

Hey there, if you have a bit of time available and want to know what's going and about the common misconceptions about screen blurriness, feel free to take a look at my recently released video guide
  10. Stop it, I'm blushing... but here's something in return: my second video, also in the original post :)
  11. Yes, in a way it does - it's closely connected to the requirements for natural regeneration that I describe in the video. I wasn't perfectly sure about the criteria of those status messages, but I experimented a lot during the past few days and have a far better understanding of them now. I'm currently working on the next video that covers this topic among others, stay tuned for detailed information on this :)

    Poisoning food!?

  13. Awesome, thanks for that :) Yeah people join the TMW TS server as patients looking for help. They seem to go through the channel list so I keep getting random pokes, aren't you the guy with the video? They're a great help to me as well, assisting with experiments - I'm always the test subject, mind you :D
  14. Just an FYI: I started working on a video on medical aspects to complement this one. Experiments are progressing really well and even clarified some aspects I wasn't sure about earlier so I'll probably do a revision of this video as well. Stay tuned :)

    Sickness?

Did you by chance ingest rotten fruit recently? Those are messages related to severe food poisoning. Symptoms are blood loss, vomiting, which causes you to lose energy and water, and an additional ongoing loss of water that will constantly dehydrate you. The condition can become worse if left untreated and might kill you. I recommend taking a charcoal tablet, which can be found in hospitals and rarely in civilian buildings. I'm currently unable to help you myself, but do see http://forums.dayzgame.com/index.php?/topic/160262-need-medical-assistance-in-dayz-sa-find-your-medic-here/ for instructions on how to contact my fellow medics from TMW.
  16. Thanks for pointing that out! I wanted to make sure that it won't be mistaken to be covering the medical system, hence the name. I changed it a bit now to include blood and health, nmaybe it's going to be easier to find it now :)

    Newbie Needs Some Help

A GT620? Mmmm... you might want to take a look at this: http://www.videocardbenchmark.net/gpu.php?gpu=GeForce+GT+620 I think we found the culprit :)

    Is dropped loot persistent?

That's right. However, since loot and zombies currently only respawn upon server restart, I think it's mostly far lower than 2 days at the moment. I think 4 hours is a pretty common restart interval, but don't quote me on that. And it's only on this very server, it won't follow a player.

    weird color

The more faded you colors are, the lower your blood level is. That's the game's way of telling you that you're not feeling too good :P From the way it looks you're pretty close to falling unconscious even from minor damage. You have a few options now: You can either look for a loot of food an drinks to regenerate blood naturally. This is quite risky and difficult though, since you really need a large amount of food and need to avoid any potential damage. If you're very attached to this character for some reason, contact me on Steam and I'll try to get you back up to speed with an infusion. Alternatively you may consider this your trial run, die, respawn and be more careful with the Zeds next time :P If you'd like an explanation of natural blood regeneration see the linked video in my signature *shameless self-advertising*
  20. I've been thinking about this for a while too. My hands-down favorite related inventory system comes from the Jagged Alliance 2 1.13 mod that puts an awesome touch on the former "8 small slots and 4 large slots" inventory: there are a multitide of different pocket types that can accept different items. Also, different pieces of clothing, packs, load-bearing equipment have a set number of pockets appropriate for their type. Here's a screenshot: The various slots have a silhouette that describes the kind of pocket. You have a slot for a knife (filled with the swiss one), the over the shoulder sling for a rifle (aside from the one in your hand) which is empty, and a vest slot. Depending on the equppied vest you have multitude of pockets: AR mags, pistol mags, grenade pouches, general small (=sewed on with a button and a bit of volume), general tiny (think pocket of jeans or similar). Then you have your leg straps, one for each leg. The screenshot has a pistol holster with a single spare mag and large ammo pouch plus three medical pouches. There's a number of different pieces available, such as extra grenade pouches, AR mags, long mags (think Bizon or Calico), etc. Then there's a bag that fits at your lower back, in this case it can take three large items and has a ring to dangle a canteen off of. And lastly there's your backpack with four general large pouches, but there's also others with a multitude of different capacities suitable for any specialization a character in your squad may have. Since the game is also about weight and endurace, you may opt for a lighter loadout for stealthy characters, with plenty of pistol mags for the silenced Glock. Go for a number of grenade pouches for the guy with the strong throwing arm, give more utility slots to your mechanic. Or recepticles for 200 round ammo boxes to your machine gunner rather than "one size fits all". Now this is obviously quite a bit overboard for DayZ, but I'd still love to see elements of this in the standalone. With the modularity that Rocket is aiming at, aside for the dedicated gun bag he also mentioned attaching items like a hatchet to slings of a backpack rather than having it magically stick to your shoulder. When it comes to modularity, I would also love to see MOLLE gear at some point. Find the bare vest and attach up to, say, four different pouches with a varying number of specialized slots. One may hold four AR mags, one could take a medkit, one works like a pistol holster. See Nutnfancy for example. I just love how he sets up his gear for high practicality, which pretty much always includes a pistol holster. But I'm starting to get way more excited than I should be... hope some of this makes it in the game, 100% on your page and side, OP.
  21. Thanks thanks thanks :) I'll consider making another video when there's something worth talking about that A) affects a large number of people B) there's sufficient data to back up the claims, C) the information isn't widely known yet and D) there are obvious misconceptions going around based on the lack of knowledge. For example I don't think it would make a whole lot of sense to talk about the medical system in much detail yet. You typically can't be aware of every negative state and its possible causes at all times. You probably don't want to be prepared for every possibility and have all 22 medical items in the game constantly available and know precisely how to apply them. Leave that to dedicated medics. Also, the available information is already properly organized in a helpful way that's more appropriate than a video. It can be found easily by googling or searching this forum, just like a video would be. For example in the DayZ Medical Guide where you can look up items, illnesses, symptoms and treatments. Or this great thread if you want find out what's wrong with you based on your status messages. So... yes there might be another video, but only if it's worth doing. I don't want to do it just for the sake of doing it, going through every eventuality that may or may not be relevant to you. Eating, drinking and regeneration just are important for everyone, so I felt it was worth talking about. Hmm I this is the first time I read about that. While I can't be absolutely sure that this isn't the case, I have no indication whatsoever that it is. Wouldn't make sense anyway. The system is modeled to reflect reality fairly well so I don't see why they would even think about putting that in. Unless they experimented with obscene amounts of beer - this alcohol is defective, give me another one!

    character Reset fix SOLUTION

A mixed report: my PC decided to reboot after about 4.5 hours of the test, maybe some update. I had been away for a while by then, so I can't really tell what happened. I know that I have been stuck in "Please wait" for at least 2.5 hours and don't know what happened between 2.5 and 4.5, buuuuut: I just logged in where I last was, still having my equipment. I don't know if I was kicked off the server for inactiveness, during a reboot, if I got a message while I was away or if the screen said "Please wait" for the entire 4.5 hours. But apparently I wasn't considered to be unconscious or rather in an unknown state when I technically left the server and wasn't respawned. I think my partial conclusion would be that if you're stuck in "Please wait" for several minutes, if you Exit, you will respawn for sure. If you don't really mind, do so, but if you want at least a chance at keeping your equipment, you might want to try and wait it out. Maybe until the next server restart which boots everyone, which is around every 4 hours as far as I know, depending on server settings probably.

Game as support / medic / hero... It's quite sad

Hahaha great - to be honest, I think slightly wacko behavior is the spice in the game. Just something special to remember. I love with what kind of crazy stuff people keep coming up to confront others with absurd situations, like the stalker vid I saw a bit ago. Forcing people into them at gunpoint is one thing, but I really admire people who don't rely on game mechanics to create memorable situations. Hiding behind a tree, waiting for passerbys and creeping them out without firing a single bullet is... just great :D Too bad I'm not creative enough for those things. Only thing I came up with is running through Cherno naked, molesting people and when they started punching or bashing me I'd activate voice chat with Haddaway's What Is Love blasting on Line In, "baby don't hurt, don't hurt me, no more" and run away... fun times, still

Game as support / medic / hero... It's quite sad

I feel you man, I feel you. I've been trying to do the same thing for a while and had the same experiences. I think another reason is that newspawns, especially around Cherno, aren't in that much need of medical attention. Move in, try to grab a few things and get out. And if they don't want to get out of Cherno, they're often there to die and wreak some havoc while at it. I used to stock up on loads of meds but gave up on that and now rather look for starter stuff: can openers, compasses, canteens, some food. Only basic medical supplies like one alcohol solution, 2-3 bandage rolls, a pack of antibiotics, 1-2 morphine and an epipen plus any saline bags/IVs I can find. Also, I try to be careful with whom I contact. Anyone with firearms is a no-go, as is anyone in military gear. If you have access to those, you're not a starter anymore and know how things work already. I look for newspawns mostly at night and try to get their attention from a distance at first. If they react at least non-agressively, as in not raising/lowering/putting away their weapon, I get a bit closer and ask if they need something. I'm not carrying a visible weapon neither and even switched from axe to pistol, since it can be hidden completely and is still perfectly fine to dispatch the occasional zombie. I also don't wear any military/camo gear and I'd like to think that helps with not bein perceived as a threat. I think that's most good I can do as a lone wolf at the moment. I have high hopes that medics are going to be in high demand in the future though, so be sure not to get discouraged by what's going on at the moment :)
