    UN Helmet

Well, obviously you are the literal shining beacon of hope, freedom and peace. *10 minutes later* You are dead.
  3. Okay, considering it's on experimental now (I think): Guys, go look and post if you can wear a ballistic helmet AND a gas mask (not any other mask, although you should also be able to wear the white masks, those respirators or so).

Friendlies exist, as the other thread says and it's amazing

Nice! You know, just saying ... if you guys want long-term friendly play with a group, check out the clan section! There's several friendly groups that may fit your playstyle or expectations, if you can meet their requirements.

Tip: Never go into one of these buildings

Besides the risk of death (I died in there once or twice, but so did many people in my group, too) there's also not much loot in there on average. So, not really much reason to enter. If the ladders don't kill you, you might glitch out of the corridor or suddenly vault over the roof edge or out of the window for some reason...
  6. Gear: hard headgear (ballistic, moto, construction and pilot helmets) cannot be wear together with masks I hope you can still wear a gas mask and a ballistic helmet, because you'd be able to in reality. As for other masks or helmet variations, I can obviously see where that would be getting hard to impossible.

    RIOT ARMOR

Depends on the caliber the guy with the steel shield got shot at. Just adding, I don't want to turn this into another topic or political debate: They used snipers, so I guess higher caliber. For all intents and purposes it wouldn't matter much. Your average riot shield would probably not cover anything than your pistol caliber, if at all. In DayZ or not. And still doesn't matter that much because your first goal would be protection from melee weapons or punches. Zombies included, or rather, primarily. Especially with a weight system or similar, it'll balance out in the future, just like in reality. In short: Riot gear = melee protection, mostly.

    Weapon flashlights not working

My Badly Damaged pistol flashlight does not work. While I think I used a ruined battery, the same did work in my normal flashlight attachment (pristine). So the attachment is not really working from what I can tell, which is a shame. Anything not ruined should still work one way or another, as implied by patchnotes. But I just couldn't get it to work, I think even with a nice battery.

    Voice volume and megaphone

I actually have the necessary voice change ready to simulate a megaphone announcement. It's still "stupid" because it effectively uses the same VOIP range that is about 80m, while it should be more. In short: I'm in favor of such items! Any medium range communication is nice. It could basically be like a walkie talkie or rather, a higher direct VOIP range. Only if you have / use the right item, that is. For both direct chat and megaphone while we're at it: Make it so that when you have VOIP activated, no matter if local, walkie talkie or even megaphone, make it so that you can use the scroll wheel to dynamically set volume / range, too. It can be adjusted via percent or just three levels. Quiet, normal, loud for example.

Poll: How many people would survive the apocalypse?

In such a scenario I see guns as last resort, or rather, not as the wonder recipe to success. Yes, might come in handy but you can't shoot microbes, bacteria or a virus with it. Seriously, go watch that documentation. I dunno what channel, watched it on YT. So many possible infection vectors it's not even funny anymore. Basically, if something like this was to occur all you folks better get out of the city and / or wear masks, gloves and be careful. Disinfect stuff, etc. Er, my point is: Most people, in their minds, focus on shooting stuff or zombies. Not getting sneezed at or not touching stuff that others touched with their fingers or so would be as vital.

Poll: How many people would survive the apocalypse?

Oh, yeah, in such a scenario the worst or one of the worst problems is humans themselves, sadly. Hysteria, looting and so on will or might bring as much 'terror' or problems as any violent disease carrier mob.

    RIOT ARMOR

Thing is, in some countries riot police does not even use shields as a whole, or only sometimes / specific units. That's because their suits are, apparently, already armored up enough so they don't need one. I've also seen riot police in other countries that use both armor and shield, and even riot police that only have helmets, a rather unprotected uniform and a shield as "primary" protection. For Chernarus though, I can see them using both armor and shield. I still think any added form of real riot gear should protect somewhat from bullets. No, don't yell at me now or yell "OP!". Explanation: In what scenario are you more likely to survive? Wearing a T-Shirt / hoodie and getting shot at or wearing full riot gear and getting shot at with a, say, pistol caliber round? My point is, the riot armor would have more stopping power than a T-Shirt or so. But not as much or any real one compared to a ballistic vest with kevlar or so.

Poll: How many people would survive the apocalypse?

Hard to impossible to really tell. It would depend on so many things. Also, by coincidence I just watched a fictional documentation about a scenario like that where an engineered rabies strain is released by mistake. It spreads as fast an influenza or so but in rabies form. Your average zombie scenario seems similar, depending on the incubation time and so on. In that scenario, after about a year 1,4 billion people would be infected and about ~980 million already dead (no, not infected or undead-dead, gone, you get it). Some states or at least governments would collapse, depending on whether vaccines work or whatever more would die. It would be global due to the way it spreads, but you could still have safe spots. The major urban centers would rather suck, though. Also, it would depend on other mammals or insects, if they can spread it, etc. "Me" or anything closely would surely be a stupid answer because there's also tribes living out there immune to certain infections, in addition to people all over the planet being naturally immune to various diseases. Many people would surely die, but humanity would probably make it. Humanity as a whole, not your average western citizen too dependent on the infrastructure that would certainly collapse in such an event. Or in other words, I doubt many people on this and other game forums would still live after some time. E: I personally think from the way it was presented and explained that it's NOT a scenario to make fun of or to laugh at. They also said that there's always "good" and "bad" research going on in that sector. Also, a virus can also mutate over time. It's actually very scary if you think about it, but it is, after all, a possible scenario. Just like an asteroid or something big hitting earth sooner or later.

    dead player = zombie (?)

From the planned features, I doubt players / people are immune. From what I read somewhere, you can eventually get "brain rot" or "brain disease" when being hit enough by zombies, and that will eventually "kill" you, or turn you into one of them. 10 minute despawner aside (just for testing etc) this would be a nice feature if there's a CHANCE that some players could get up after "death". They wouldn't roam unless running after a player, so you could still pinpoint the area where they died. You'd have to "kill" them for real then to loot them. After killing an infected player (that technically died) you would then have your average corpse. You'd also have it if the player who fell over with that sickness didn't get back up and died for real. But it would probably be a "technical nightmare" or complex, I think? Zombies with loot are nothing new, the mod had that. But you'd also have to make unique zombie models or turn the player character into some sort of NPC then if you want them to actually wear what they wear.

    Pre-recorded voice

Also, mute people. It might not be bad to have, actually.

Impossible to be "Friendly" in this game. Resorted to Banditry.

I already disagree with the thread title. Anyone giving up being friendly is perhaps doing something wrong or could do something better? At least don't become part of the supposed problem, guys. As lone guy you'll always be at a disadvantage, KOS or friendly. I roll with a group and being friendly / neutral was apparently never easier (for me / most of us).

    "more apocalyptic" towns, maps.

Since there's no official set story ("DayZ - It's your story") I don't like to think of YearZ (hurr). It's obviously not right during the whole mess because most places are abandoned / full of zombies, but it can't be years either. That allows for a healthy loot and also vehicle balance later on, I think. I do agree on the apocalyptic thing though. So far you only see hints of it. Trashed houses (random, not set) or also random or dynamic exterior 'trash' would be cool in the bigger cities.

    Some Soviet/Red Army clothes!

Is it just me or is a too cliché look over the top? I mean, I see many posts like that. Cars aside I imagine most of the stuff (not necessarily all posted here but in general) or a lot phased out, at least regarding military use. Some of the populace could have that lying around though?
  19. Combine (DayZ)

why are people doing this ?

Some posts make me wonder a bit. I think it's unrealistic. "Hurr, nothing to lose, gonna rush you!" Well, you don't have much to lose from a technical POV, but I personally don't think rushing armed people that did not yet show any hostile action towards you is realistic or healthy. I also like to point out that not every armed or geared player on the coast is automatically hostile to all. Yes, there are these people, but then there's also friendly people and groups. My group does relief ops to coastal regions from time to time to help anyone. Best protection is to have some gear that makes your task easier. Or, in short, I like to play more realistic, which means I try not to die.
  20. Combine (DayZ)

    RIOT ARMOR

Realistically, you can hold a shield and use a pistol. At least your average riot shield. A ballistic shield or whatever? Not sure. Might be hard, but you can see SWAT etc. do that.

    Effective deterrent to KOS?

@ Thread title: Effective deterrent to KOS? Noise and attention. No, seriously. Sounds simple, but most often is. Live and let live counts, too. But most who just shoot give their position away. It's safter not shooting at everything because it MIGHT not be friendly. I personally also think that people that only KOS miss some stuff, simple as that.
  22. Combine (DayZ)

    RIOT ARMOR

Basically, your average riot armor in 2nd to 1st world country should have the focus on melee or projectile (stones, hard bottles, etc) protection. That's their primary purpose after all. The hardened mats should not make it easy to get hit or stabbed. I'm not an expert on the topic but looked into it from time to time because I considered applying for police and later on riot squads. Almost common sense anyway, makes sense to build the armor precisely for that. But don't expect good or military grade ballistic protection. In gameplay or technical terms it should have SOME ballistic protection because of the used hardened materials. But it shouldn't be the same as vests or the ballistic helmet (unless it's the same material in some parts realistically). So basically or in short: Good for melee or against thrown items, but if you want to be safe regarding bullets and firefights, better grab your military gear or anything with more ballistic protection. Might in fact be good "hero" gear. Not even that. If we'll have more zombies eventually, you better consider good melee protection that doesn't make you bleed easily. You're gonna need it for those major urban areas.

    Radio Broadcast

As long as it gives some sort of (optional) long range comms, I'm for any idea in that regard. No need to mute anyone if it relies upon a device or channel. Just turn it off or change the channel then. I really like walkie-talkies, but I think the maximum range is limited and due to spawn / location rates they're not that common and effective.
