Let's not predict the end of the world here. It's no longer a mod relying on a game. It is essentially its own game and we have to see how things will go. Technical stuff included.

What random events would you like to see?
Combine (DayZ) replied to Roshi (DayZ)'s topic in General Discussion
Considering the event type, you don't have to participate :) At least I picture things like supply drops as random event non-intrusive in a negative POV. Then again I also see no problem with more "intrusive" things. Let's go extreme here and take sudden zombie groups in the forests or between cities, or short / medium artillery bombardment of a major city: If it comes down to it I see no difference between that and a group of players appearing. It's just bad luck. Having certain events however makes things more dynamic. You never know out there... It should simply not be forced by having players nearby. No "Player nearby, trigger event A" but it should be a global random chance to have XY appear at X. -

I really like the "restore power" aspect. At least for some time. Or making it depend on resources. -

Random ideas, some already mentioned but in favor: 1) Dynamic plane crashes in certain areas AND / OR just sightings. You see it but it may never go down or when you don't see it 2) Random supply drops by military / relief organization via chopper / plane in certain locations (why drop stuff in the middle of the forest unless announced or shown somehow) 3) Major urban areas being bombed via artillery (nothing too big, maybe mortar or similar). A siren would run for a minute or so as warning, people would have to get out or take cover in buildings Advantage: Any of these are, to my knowledge, more or less easy to implement. A big gameplay impact with little effort. Yes, DayZ is what the players make out of it, but SOME "flavor" wouldn't hurt. The more the merrier. Makes the world seem less static. -
There would be. Keep it as it is right now but allow private hives for servers.

I could also argue that all the realism / survival arguments in favor of KOS are just paranoid people hanging onto their gear which was probably obtained within 2 hours or so. KOS = Kill on sight. Well, if the unarmed guy in civilian clothing 100m away is a threat to an armed group, too, then I dunno. Play as you like, just don't expect that everyone likes how you play. Goes for all sides. There's pros and cons for everything. But know that the argument of "it would be boring if all were to hold hands and do PVE" goes both ways. It would also be f'in boring if all would just shoot each other because, oh no, that "freshspawn" 500m away NEEDS to be sniped because he COULD be(come) a threat to my group decked out in mil gear. Slight exaggeration there, just to get the point across. PVP is ok. Happens a lot. I don't like a general community wide KOS mentality though. Thank god I hear enough reports of this not being the case, at least not every time every place. But again, just wait for more features and there'll be more stuff to do. Stuff that encourages teaming up. KOS loners can only do so much.

Good. Let them or supposed wannabes suffer.

Keep in mind that's your experience. That does not necessarily means all admins are bad or end up being bad. It's just not that there's any "formal training" so in theory anyone can become one given luck / money / time / the right friends, and of course bad apples are among them. I've been in comms where you had nice admins, was one myself. Some others were less than nice, one guy was rather abusive but got kicked out eventually. It depends on the type of person. In short: There's probably no "THE admins".
-
Well, this depends. There are certain player groups around who'd have that stuff from an RP POV. But it's a good idea. Put it in the rules and maybe add a disclaimer to the ingame section where you can add / select your (squad) logo.
-
This would be very vital. Enough reasons were given, there are groups or individuals out there that would benefit greatly from this. If you really fear abuse, one could consider some sort of "report system" perhaps. Or having to get patches "allowed" first, or, you know, SOME sort of compromise. There are many custom groups so it's apparently not so vial for the devs to implement a shitload of different patches / plates (as random loot? wut?) either. It's kind of shitty to deny groups or certain individuals (medics, etc.) this big benefit just because SOMEONE could use a pink (cartoon?) penis. I'd say the demand outweighs the potential "abuse".
-
But this isn't TF2, even though it was apparently just a comparison. I get the point, but I wouldn't shit bricks about it. I cannot imagine 9 out of 10 DayZ servers being "totally custom" if that stuff was allowed. Weird stuff will certainly happen, but I can live with that by avoiding those (apparently abusive) servers simply because having a server with a private hive and no other modifications is suitable for me. Heck, force any "private server" to use a personal hive, no problem for me either. That should also prevent certain abuse. Gearing up in safety on a personal server to fuck shit up on a public one, if both were to use the public hive. Anyone who wants to play "normally" can simply look at the labels or put them into the filter. Entering "public" into the filter should be more than enough in most cases.
-
So far I don't see a big deal about private servers if they have their separate hives. I'll enjoy this because you won't have people that server hop or ghost to name an example. Depending on what rules are allowed you may also probably see more custom servers with certain rulesets, but these are labeled afaik. You can actually find a place that fits your playstyle and play there. I see nothing bad in it, as it's optional. Just give servers clear labels and be off with it. And it's not like every private server will turn into a playground for a few buddies that kick everyone who joins. It can happen as it happens already (so far they risk losing their servers for that BS though, if they can't read or understand TOS) and I saw some weird stuff in the mod too. But that's reputation then, too. One can just pick another server.
-
Damn, man. DayZ needs moar of this.
-
Would actually be nice to get some other decent hints. But as far as I know you can already see where they were hit, at least. By looking at where the blood comes out.
-
No clue from a realistic standpoint. I guess it's purely a gameplay thing. You know, collecting pieces and getting more over time. It's not like they didn't have complete maps before the apocalypse and then all decided to split 'em up.

The KOS conundrum, problem/solution.
Combine (DayZ) replied to McBonkhead's topic in General Discussion
With more long-term goals and features we'll hopefully see a bit less of that in general. You can never get rid of it in this game. And in some ways it belongs to the game. Some people just play the game that way. But it's still a game. They, depending on what they do ... ... can ruin the day of other people ... might probably never witness the interesting (happy end or not) player interaction we see and like in many videos It's almost logical. You can't have it all. You either do this or that. But everything has pros and cons. If you play the game in a certain way, and only in that way (for example being a KOS loner ) then you miss out on some stuff. Sometimes it saves your skin, sometimes that's what gets you killed. You never know. I just dislike being a dick in game. By that I mean things like ghosting or sitting on the coast killing unarmed people / fresh spawns for no real reason. Again, the game also permits you to do it and any player should eventually expect death. Apart from glitches. But that doesn't necessarily mean you should always do what you can do, in my book. But then again my playstyle is a bit different. To each their own I guess. -
You can, to my knowledge, only find out names if ... ... force-feeding something to someone, cuffing, giving medical aid etc. ... the person told the name him/herself via VOIP or chat ... taking a good hard damn guess If none of that happened and if you had no "spy" (in TS or whatever, listening to you) then I call fucking hacking / modification. I'm not even sure if that's possible but calling him out saying on what floor and in what stance he is (with name) seems more than fishy, unless it was a guess. Still does not explain the name thing.

people with pine trees and grass turned off......
Combine (DayZ) replied to coltonlong's topic in General Discussion
Well, okay, I can understand if there's technical limitations. But geez, it still defeats the purpose of certain things. Maybe they could at least increase the rendering size / radius more. Maybe not 3 KM but perhaps to 1 or a half. -
From what I hear (stories of friends) and see (own experience) stuff seems somewhat civil. More or less. Maybe that's because I roll with a certain group, too. And there's still a lot of death out there. But guys should realize that you don't always SHOULD do the things you CAN do. You can, but action-reaction. It's still a game. Often, if one wins another loses. You might have some shits n' giggles briefly but could seriously ruin the day of another person. You can. But don't have to. At least, no one, game or otherwise, forces you to do certain things. Anyway, most of the interesting stuff happens when there's more social interaction than bullets flying left and right. The mix makes the fun, imo. And guys, all the funny (minus pure PVP) videos you see and probably love about DayZ wouldn't be possible if all were to KOS with no exceptions. I like a healthy balance. I guess verbal / written communication is the first key to less KOS (hence, kill on sight. Not saying less PVP) and more interaction.

people with pine trees and grass turned off......
Combine (DayZ) replied to coltonlong's topic in General Discussion
It's actually quite annoying if you think (and end up as a victim of this) about it. You in forest or foliage? You can hardly see shit in 1st person. Fun fact: Anyone else can see you nearly perfectly. Grass and all does not render after a certain distance and some stuff does not render properly (afaik). While the same goes for you it's still kind of annoying and can often defeat the purpose of camo on long-range. E: And that does not take altering stuff further into account, such as (apparently as stated above?) deleting stuff. -
In Standalone bullets can now penetrate characters from what I've seen, therefore also possibly certain structures. In the "Scumbag Bandit with a Mosin" (or so) videos you can see him snipe in Cherno from a factory tower or so. He aims at a player that has a zombie behind him; upon firing through the head or throat he also kills the zombie nearly completely behind the player. At least from what I've seen, if I did see that right.

First, I only heard stories about 'dem ladders. Didn't give it much thought. Until that day in the elevator shaft... never forget. But seriously, is there a way to circumvent those stupid deaths so far? My idea was to climb and immediately hit the "w" (move forward) key to prevent falling off. Can people confirm that this works? After my own ladder death I only did that and it supposedly worked for me so far. At least at school building ladders and some shafts.

I read that pristine military gear can basically stop a pistol round until ruined. Given some benefit of the doubt or so, you could say that pristine mil gear (with ballistic protection) can stop one round total. I assume by "stopping a round" they refer to absorbing complete damage or most of it. It could still be possible to bleed or get broken bones depending on the hit, though. Just assumptions and hearsay, however.

I dont understand why there is no AUTO RUN KEY!!!
Combine (DayZ) replied to Bohannan (DayZ)'s topic in Suggestions
But is that supported by the game such as VOIP (on a local level) then? No, it is not. That's my main point at least. Same with TS or any other external voice comm. You can, but it's not a game feature apart from local level comms. -
I dont understand why there is no AUTO RUN KEY!!!
Combine (DayZ) replied to Bohannan (DayZ)'s topic in Suggestions
There is a difference between "coming up with a creative solution to a supposed 'problem'" and "having a game feature that enables / encourages something", though. That should be kept in mind. It's pure convenience that can be helpful, but that can also be "abused" somewhat. Like third person, kinda. How? Simple. It CAN take away a certain key part of the game and difficulty. Part of the game is active travel. Case: Spawn somewhere or just get to some part of the map without really playing by aiming in the rough direction, then using auto-run to get there. You may get stuck here and there, but with or without slight corrections you can basically travel far without really "playing". "Oh shit I just died, oh well screw this Imma just run back via auto-run!" *alt-tab and do other stuff, only check briefly from time to time until back at old or intended spot* That would be something that is POSSIBLE with an auto-run feature, even if the majority that use it were to play during that (as in, they just don't hold down the "W" key or similar). And that could be one of the reasons it's not (yet) a feature. At least that is my assumption. Again, there's a difference between "doing it yourself" and "X being provided through the game", in my opinion. E: I'd say that the little effort you save may or may not really come in handy. What I mean is: If you really want to put less stress on your hands while playing / typing / being on the PC, you should do certain stuff from time to time. Stuff people in offices or so do. Shake your hands a bit, wiggle your arms, w/e. Stuff you learn in computer courses or even school. Move around a bit, etc.
