    DayZ Mod 1.8.3

I too run without crosshairs, but I still have waypoints and death messages enabled. I've thought about disabling death messages to leave the experience much more suspenseful.

    DayZ Mod 1.8.3

In my experience, only a few hardcore players want first person only. That will be an interesting experiment. I'm just glad that 1.8.3 has breathed new life into the mod and my server population is up. As a result, I did more tuning to my dedicated server and have now got the CPU clocks up to 4.66GHz. When running with 50 players, my server FPS was still over 30, so I've increased the slots to 60. I think I may be able to go as far as 75 or 80 on slots with good performance. It would be pretty cool to see a vanilla server with that kind of population.

    DayZ Mod 1.8.3

I've been pretty busy lately, but as soon as I realized an update was pushed, I downloaded it and updated. There is never going to be and "instant" update for servers. Server operators don't get an email or anything notifying them of an update so they can run home and update their server immediately. You need some realistic expectations. You have to realize most of us with the means of running a server are not kids. We have relationships, (wives or girlfriends) we have kids, we have JOBS, (so we can afford to run our servers) and I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one that enjoys and active social and recreational life outside of computers. In other words, our time is limited.

    Namalsk

I have a very high performance Namalsk server up and running that needs a good population. Only additions have been self-bloodbag and remove clothing. Check my signature and give it a try.

In Support of a New Vanilla Hive

I've had the discussion with some of the other public server operators to start a new public hive. I have the resources to host a new public hive, but with that comes overhead of maintaining the new public hive and there is of course cost associated as well. Someone has to maintain the database, the bandwidth costs money, dedicating hardware to a new DB server costs money, especially if there is to be any redundancy for links and the database server itself. Any of you that work in IT might have some inclination as to just how expensive bandwidth can be. I could host the MySQL server in a clustered VMware environment which would take care of the redundancy, but there is also the question of IOPS the server might need and a virtual environment may not be the best solution. All things considered with the operational cost of a new public hive, is there really enough players left with interest in playing vanilla dayz to justify having multiple servers connected to a single hive? Personally, I don't think the numbers are there.

This whole post made me LOL.

    DayZ Mod 1.8.2

I also run mine on a 4 hour restart. 3 hours would be optimal for a 50 slot server, but you certainly notice load in times once you get over 3 hours start getting slow. I went to 3 hour restarts at one point, but my regular players started to say the restarts were too often, so they went back to 4 hours. I'm also running on a server I custom built running at 4.5GHz, 2100MHz memory and SSD drives and you still end up getting laggy after 3 hours. More importantly, I'd like to compare notes on Geryon's basic.cfg on his servers.

    DayZ Mod 1.8.2

I have been seeing this on my server as well. When players with bandit skins die, they respawn as regular survivors.

BattlEye Server Filters for DayZ Mod 1.8.4

I think I may finally have a hit on that rule. Yesterday someone launched a script that added AI on my server and I was digging through the scripts.log and found this entry. I haven't seen this entry before, so could this be what triggered it? Line 1075740: 21.09.2014 20:24:17: SerIousHeAt (68.12.34.132:51058) deleted - #27 "#line 1 "z\addons\dayz_code\compile\object_setHit.sqf"

BattlEye Server Filters for DayZ Mod 1.8.4

I will keep an eye on this event and see if it comes up again, but I had not noticed it until the typo caused it to pop up a few times in a row, each with different players, so I wonder if it is catching a normal condition in the game.

BattlEye Server Filters for DayZ Mod 1.8.4

In the current version of remoteexec.txt there is a missing closing quotation that is causing mpeventhandler kicks for this: RemoteExec Restriction #0 "Hit" 16:162 Survivor2_DZ - "_this spawn server_playerHit;"This is the rule in remoteexec.txt that is missing the closing quote: 5 !="this enableSimulation false;this allowDammage false;this disableAI 'FSM';this disableAI 'ANIM';this disableAI 'MOVE';" !="this enableSimulation false;this allowDammage false;this disableAI'FSM';this disableAI'ANIM';this disableAI'MOVE'; <-- Missing closing quotation!

Was the female player menstruating at the time? Sorry... I just couldn't resist. I'm a 10 year old trapped inside a 40 year old body.

    DayZ Mod 1.8.2

As you have stated, there is very little impact on a MySQL database. It would take a LOT of servers to need a substantial DB server. The transactions are very small amounts of data. Moving lots of small amounts of data is like serving a busy web page. It doesn't take a lot of horsepower to do this. When you are file serving, it's a different story. You need a good CDN set up to handle the load. I already have the infrastructure and bandwidth needed to host a public DB for DayZ Mod, however, it's not as simple as allowing multiple servers to access your DB. It has to be configured differently so there is a separate DB or at least separate table for all player data that will be persistent for all the different servers accessing the public hive. Second, each server that is whitelisted to the public hive need their own separate DB to be created so that vehicles, etc specific to their server is persistent. With all of that comes the need to have scripts to handle the cleanup off all the independent servers attached to the Public DB as well as cleanup scripts for the player database. The database structure for running private hive servers will not work out of the box for running a public hive setup. It will take a bit of customization for setup and maintenance and the IOPS needed to support this will greatly depend on how many servers will be connecting to it. For starters, I think it is safe to say that there will only be a very few servers making use of a public hive database. A lot of this will depend on if and when the server files for DayZ SA become available.

R4Z0R49 - I was referencing the idea of putting together a new public hive for any server operators interested.

    DayZ Mod 1.8.2

Finally! Nice work guys! I'm still waiting to get my new set of IPs assigned and as soon as that happens, I'll get my server back up. Are any of the server operators still interested in getting a new "Public" hive running? I just ordered some Arista 10G switches for my servers to really speed things up.

Wowwww..... And just like that, the end of an era.

    DayZ Mod 1.8.1

Epic timing. I will be moved into my new place in a few days and ready to bring up my server again. Who do I need to contact about having a new IP whitelisted for the public hive?

    DayZ Mod 1.8.1

I will be moving on July 30th. Hopefully I will be moved into my new home and back online soon and then maybe we can start discussing the setup of a new public hive server if BI will give us the go-ahead.

    DayZ Mod 1.8.1

This is something so secret it will only be revealed to you when you die. I have postulated that it is either controlled by the matrix or is really run by extra terrestrials.

    DayZ Mod 1.8.1

The public hive database only serves a very few of us these days. It provides a way for players to go from one public hive server to another and retain the gear they have from one server to the next. Private hive servers use their own database, therefore your gear will only be persistent on that one server.

    DayZ Mod 1.8.1

Public Hive database server has gone offline again. :(
  24. I'm slightly confused about this update. Is this only for server operators that are launching their servers though steam or does this need to be done to ALL servers so they can be seen in the Steam browser? My server is installed using DVDs and not steam, so will this update be performed the same way? Do I still need this update? Will I have to buy a copy of ArmA2 OA on steam in order to keep my server running with the Steam browser? Some clarification would be a big help! Thanks!

ArmA2 OA Beta Patch 124802 for Steam Update

Just thought I would share this with you: Doing some different performance testing with Server 2012 R2, I have found a couple things that will definitely give you better performance with a dedicated server. First, You want to use the -cpuCount= switch and set it to 2 cores. I have experimented with using 6 and even 4, but for whatever reason when you use anything over 2 with 2012 R2, it will ONLY use 1 core and peg it out even with just 7-10 players on the server. I'm not sure why this happens, but I suspect it is in the way the ArmA 2 engine multithreads. Currently, I have the -cpuCount= switch set for 2 cores and I also use the /affinity switch to assign the cores. Doing this correctly uses the cores in scale with server load and disperses the load between the cores. In addition to the -cpuCount switch, I have the -exThreads= switch set for 3. I would love to see my server full so that I can further performance tune, but who knows if and when that will happen again.
