    I feel really, really bad...

Having the right and exercising that right are two very different things my friend. Killing people is easy, so is pretty much every thing morally wrong (it's just a game, so I wouldn't take it quite that far :P). What I'm saying is, if you really did feel bad about it, then don't do it. There's *far* greater challenge and -- in my opinion -- far better reward in the business of being a friendly player than just another back stabber/murderer/kill on sight out of defense player. It's definitely against the flow, it's not what everyone else is doing, and it is a up hill battle... but if that appeals to you, click the link in my Sig and check it out.

You're playing too much Dayz if...

When you hear a buzzing insect sound and look for dead bodies instinctively.

Suddenly, I see a jump in recruitment in our future (bandits gonna use us to get themselves loot rofl).

Not really. While a lot of bandits travel in packs and are very organized, a lot of them are lone wolf and aren't organized in the slightest. Remember, the recent events in this game (the kill on sight mentality especially) has made a lot of solo players turn to banditry to survive.

@KillSwitch_1 We'd love to have you bro! I'll add you to the list if you're still interested. Feel free to visit our private forums (in the first post) and sign up there if you wish to join the more organized section of Regulators. Found here: http://regulators.freeforums.org/index.php @Clatterbridge I see what you're saying man, and I'll try to explain how the Regulator can get by in this harsh world. First off, let me start this off by saying, being one of the good guys is an up hill battle. You will almost always be at a disadvantage, both in equipment and options. I'm not saying it's not hard, but there are ways of doing it. For example (using your scenario) I would suggest that the Regulator hide and attempt to make contact through the direct channel. A Regulator should always try to play things cautiously and safe. The Regulator should ask the man questions, talk to him, and eventually try to make contact (preferably when the Regulator has an advantage) if at all possible. If not, in this specific case, I'd suggest that the Regulator avoid contact altogether, and stalk the subject or move along. A Regulator has it a bit harder than most players, self imposed restrictions like trying not to kill the innocent, can really make it difficult for us to do our job. Generally speaking, though, most bandit shootouts I've witnessed have one clear aggressor, because Day Z is less about shootouts and more about ambushes, generally people don't see each other at the same time, and it's pretty easy to spot who is being the aggressive one. Again, I'd like to say, that no one is saying that doing this is easy. However, I and many others believe, that it will help the game long term, it makes the game more enjoyable for the person who chooses this path, and it adds a whole new dynamic to the game -- a group of well armed friendlies hunting those who prey on innocents for their loot.

I'm also trying to compile every useful resource out there (guides, data charts, tips etc.) into the tips of our forums section so we can share it among ourselves to better understand the game. Once you've signed up on those forums, you'll gain access to those threads, and you can help contribute if you want. Remember guys, none of this is necessary -- it's just there for those who want to get more organized.

We have a forum up and running, it can he found here: http://regulators.freeforums.org/index.php If it's not too much trouble, everyone who's become a Regulator, could you please post here or in the main thread so we can get a roster going? We've got like 25+ members, but only 4 listed XD.

I sure hope they can fix server hopping, if there's one thing a Vigilante hates worse than a murderer, it's a cheating murderer! Really though, I just want a solution to the rampant kill on sight. I don't want bandits gone, far from it, I like them being fairly common. What I do not like is the fact that even players who want to be good feel forced to shoot on sight. It's an up hill climb being the good guy, but at least we get the warm fuzzy feeling inside ;D.

Wouldn't go so far as to say nonsense, just really hard to pull off. Luckily, Regulators aren't try for anything like that... it would be a pain rofl.

@thelonewarrior Yeah, sometimes being the good guy doesn't go as planned XD. Watched some of your youtube videos, first off, dig the accent. Secondly, what servers do you play on? I watched your "last stand" one and felt bad, if you ever need help like that again and if you happen to play on American servers, you can message me or post here any time.

@Grey Warden I think your point is actually very accurate -- lots of people try to make excuses as to why banditry (and murder) is realistic in this setting, when it's just not. This is not to say not murder and no banditry would exist, but it certainly wouldn't be super common like it is in this game. In real life, you'd never just kill someone (with a gun or anything loud that is) and you probably wouldn't kill them even if you knew they had good loot (what if they have friends nearby, what if I attract zombies, what if I attract bandits, those aren't even dealing with the obvious moral problems most sane people would face with the thought of taking a life). Indeed, I hope Regulators can grow into a force that will truly have an impact on the game. Spread the word friends, we're growing pretty fast already by word of mouth and these forum posts. If you meet survivors in game with like minded goals, ask if they want to join -- there are no obligations of any kind except for not being a person who kills everyone else (only self defense when fired upon, and bandit killing is allowed).

    Law to Lawless Lands

@Knave Very cool man! I'm playing *somewhat* similarly, though a little more close and personal. I'm PvE focused, so I prefer an M16 to a DMR, so when I go bandit hunting I have to be a bit more close up (only got one so far, and he wasn't looking XD). @baz That was very noble my friend. People seem to think that being selfless in this is a hard thing to do... but they really need to try it, it's very rewarding. Lots of people probably think we're a group of holier-than-thou dudes that need to loosen up -- but it's quite the opposite. Hunting down well equipped, hostile players is a very rewarding experience. It's enriched by the fact that we try to be as helpful as possible -- it makes the game all the more enjoyable. I suggest to anyone that is having problems staying interested in Day Z, or is looking to spice things up a bit, don the Regulator tag, give being the good guy a try. It's a very fun, very rewarding experience.

    Law to Lawless Lands

The law of not being an evil murderous thieving... I'll stop there XD. Yes, we'll be enforcing what we perceive to be just (as in justice) laws. I practice complete non-aggression (except with bandits), if you read my story a few pages back, you'll see the kind of members that join the Regulators. We won't shoot you, even if there's a good chance you're going to shoot us. We only fire when we've confirmed one is a bandit or a kill on sight player. We're kind, and ready to offer assistance when we can. So while I understand you being willing to shoot us before you know who we are, there's really no sense to shooting us after you've determined we're part of the Regulators. It's a vigilante style law, that's why we're the "Regulators" (I believe it's a cowboy era reference), it's about justice, protecting the innocent, killing the bad guys, and in this case taking their fat lootz. Will we get it right every time? No. Can anyone say that what we're doing isn't a morally good and just thing? Not really. Ultimately, people will get bored of kill on sight eventually, this is an alternative form of content that will spice things up for everyone. Very well geared players hunting other very well geared players but also trying to protect innocents? It will probably make some very cool encounters. We want Day Z to be better, where people don't have to shoot on sight to get by (like you seem to), that's all :P not trying to subjugate the masses. Don't take this post as aggressive or anything, just to clarify, I have no problem with your post. I'm just trying to explain our position a little bit more :P.

If this really caught on, and there were AWOL Regulators... that'd be like the coolest thing ever. It'd be such a cool RP experience -- to have to hunt down your own who've gone corrupt.
  18. Note: If any people who don't have much time to spare read this post, simply read the underlined sentences, they're the suggestions, in between each one is the explanation if you're interested. Hello all, we all realize that the game has become kill on sight as of late. Some like it, most I'd wager do not. It is my personal belief, that this behavior (kill on sight) comes from a few things: -Lack of end game content, too easy to get decked out. -Worried everyone will shoot you. -Getting zombies after you isn't that bad, they're easy to lose or kill. -Supplies are abundant, you can keep a lot of ammo with relative ease. What if I told you, that I had a few fairly simple suggestions to help address *all* of these problems? Without eliminating banditry, or punishing it directly, but instead punishing gameplay that ignores zombies? Indeed, I believe the solution lies not with punishing bandits, but instead by making zombies a very real, very serious threat. In fact, one of my suggestions will give a new tool to the bandits to allow them to be bandits more effectively, without the frustration. 1. Boost the noise (both the stat that zombies hear, and the actual noise) that guns make by a significant amount (especially sniper rifles). This change will make it so zombies are drawn from further away when you shoot, making a firefight in the middle of the city nothing short of stupid. You'll draw bandits, curious survivors, and zombies. 2. Boost zombie speed (quite a bit), boost their damage per hit (1,000 - 2,000 blood) and make bleeding a certainty (though it can be low, just make bandages necessary). What if you didn't know you could always fairly easily escape from zombies? I know that, when I'm looting a town, I know all I have to do is run for a little ways and get to the nearest building... but what if there's a serious chance I won't get to that building/dock/hill? I'll be a lot more careful in and around town, especially considering they're more lethal. 3. To compensate, making sure the game doesn't become ridiculously difficult, lower the amount of zombies that spawn by a small number of people bya good amount *except* for the military spawns (airfields, Stary tents) but not fire stations. However, make sure that a large group of people will still spawn a large amount of zombies -- to keep group play interesting. This will make it so solo is still very possible, however, being reckless will punish you severely. Not to mention, making military spawns harder to deal with will only prolong the life of the game for everyone. 4. Add a hands on your head or get on the ground option (I don't know if these is even possible). What it will do is put you in a stance where you are froze, can't move, can't do anything except access your inventory. To exit this mode, takes like 3-4 seconds, you will be unable to fight back for 3-4 seconds. The theory is, in light of the more dangerous game, survivors who fall to banditry for items, may spare you and instead hold you hostage, demanding that you activate this mode lest you be shot. 5. Make military ammunition spawns less common everywhere except for the airfields and starry (fire stations and deer stands included) making ammo more precious. This will make it so people won't want to waste their ammo as much. They won't kill unarmed or lootless targets (in theory). All of the above changes, I believe, would make this game far better. You may say that I'm being a bit too severe, that banditry won't happen if these go through, but I beg to differ. I believe that this will mostly affect the shoot on sight players (who do so out of self defense, or for fun) with banditry being affected a little but not too much. Banditry will return to being about the loot, not murdering, and murderers will be a truly shocking sight again, it will be a novelty, and killing other players will be more of a novelty as well. Even the murderers will have more fun, it'll be more exciting, more fresh, more dangerous, and ultimately less common. The bandits will have fun, because they'll have new (silent) ways of forcing people to give up their loot, not to mention they'll have more to play for with loot being harder to acquire. Survivors will have more fun, they won't need to feel they must shoot on sight, they'll not be getting shot every time they see another player, and they'll have more to play for because of top end loot being harder to acquire. Finally, all parties everywhere will (I believe) have more fun because zombies will be something to fear. When you were first playing, zombies scared you, you didn't know that you could kill them or escape them. They were freaky fast, they seemed strong, they were very scary in look and sound. Now, they're nothing, they're a sideshow, sprinkles on the cake -- if you get caught you just run away for a while and you're safe. With zombies being stronger and faster, you'll be really scared again, you will be freaking out when you're chased, you will feel fear like you did when you first played. You won't run into the middle of town, shoot everyone up, then run into a building and be completely safe. Thank you for reading, what do you guys think?

Suggestions to fix the deathmatch *and* make the game better!

Really? Very nice. But see, zombie speed is affected by a couple of variables. They stop to try to hit you, and they usually fail, which sets them behind you. They also zig zag kind of, which yet again slows them down. At the moment, I can literally run forever (if achieving forever was possible ^^) and literally never get hit once by a zombie. That's not including the fact that getting into a building is super easy and will save you like 95% of the time. There are multiple problems with this though: 1. It taxes the servers more than they already are, while my suggestions reduce it. 2. More zombies with nothing to balance it out, will really hurt the ability for players to solo. That was something I was being careful about not doing, I'm keeping everything balanced, the only thing being discouraged is stupid gameplay or careless gameplay. Some computers who already have a hard time on ARMA will have an even harder time. I have virtually no problem keeping any assault rifles or the DMR (only sniper I've ever had D:) stocked on ammunition. Additionally, the only places I would decrease are the fire stations and the deer stands (not set on the deer stands), making the airfields/stary where all the bandits/murderers/end gamers go, leaving the beaches free of super geared players. It's a way of separating the two populations, ensuring more enjoyable gameplay for both. It also makes it for people who want to play solo can easily avoid the hot spots, get themselves geared up without worry, then head off to the end game stuffz. Thanks for your post, it was definitely a good read.

Suggestions to fix the deathmatch *and* make the game better!

Beanus, Very cool, only an amateur Arma 2 player so I fail at knowing these kinds of things (I've only played the campaigns + a few user campaigns). ODoyleRules, 1. I didn't notice, I only noticed the 1911/revolver suck (that's all I've been using) and since I read that they were nerfed by BI, I thought that was it. 2. They're faster, but they can't really catch a person running at full speed because they zig zag and they stop to hit but miss, making them fairly easy to keep away from. I want it to be so they can keep up and hit you while you're running. 3. I thought that would be cool too, unfortunately that makes them too easy to escape, making it so people can run around and kill without fear of repercussion. The point of these changes is to make it so murdering senselessly or acting stupid will get you killed, if zombies were slow they'd actually be easier to escape than they already are... which just makes me go "lol". Though I agree, it would be a bit more fun probably if they were slow. Really, the thing about these rules is that all but 4/5 must be put in, or any one of them would really kill balance without helping the bandit problem much. 2 might make banditry (please note, I use banditry as synonymous with murder sometimes) a bit less common, but it won't combat some sniper sitting on a hill somewhere. Without 1., bandits will still be able to haunt Cherno/Electro with ease. Without 3, the game will be too insanely difficult for anyone to make it solo, so it's necessary if 2 is implemented. Thanks for the comments guys.

    Law to Lawless Lands

I agree 100%, I was actually surprised to not get shot by someone. That has not happened to me for weeks... I survived an encounter with a fairly well armed survivor, that's just shocking. I feel so bad for new players, we got lucky, we got to see Day Z before "kill everyone" became the new way of enjoying the game. Love this game, really love how much Rocket has put into it... but we need something to stop this -- fast. Anyone else notice that we had 240,000 some players in the last 24 hours like 7 days ago, and now it's at 184,000? I really hope there's a good reason for that :/.

For those looking for a different way of playing

Cool story man, I just shared a similar experience over in the main thread. Wasn't that fun for you though? I know that, up until now, I'd been playing Day Z, but felt kind of hollow. Not playing with anyone, avoiding everyone I could, it just wasn't the same. But even having a few minutes of contact with another player made the game so much fun again.

    Law to Lawless Lands

I think the goal of the Regulators, is more symbolic. It's less about bringing laws to all of the servers, and more about standing up against the majority of players -- those who just kill on sight. It's more about spreading the message that some people are still good, some people aren't murderous. At least, that's how I view it and treat it Relevant story incoming: Yesterday, I was looting the fire station, I heard flies and I found two dead bodies. I figured they'd been dead for a while, because I hadn't saw nor heard anyone nearby. I left the fire station and headed away, making the journey to Stary, when I was shot and hit for like 4,000 Blood. I turned around, and saw someone on top of the fire station. I had an AK-74 Kobra, I returned fire to try to pin him down, headed back into the fire station and bandaged up (from 12,000 -> 6,000 blood). Had to kill a boat load of zombies, then I typed into direct chat: "If you wanted my stuff, you could have just asked! Learn some manners!". To my surprise, my attacker responded "sorry". We got to talking, and he informed me that this was his first day, every player he met had attacked him, apparently he managed to get his hands on an AKM, so he was just killing people on sight to avoid dying. He hadn't met a friendly person yet. He said he was coming down, and I thought for sure he would try to kill me -- but I had decided long ago, if I suspected they may be innocent, I would not fire under any circumstances. To my surprise, yet again, he did not kill me. We talked, and he was interested in cooperating with me, to regain the blood we had both lost (him from other players), I had a hunting knife, matches, and an axe, so we went off in search of wild life to gut. He never betrayed me -- unfortunately, he disconnected while we were going to start a fire after getting some raw meet. Family (the guy's name) if you happen to be reading this, this is [Regulator] Curt, I'd love to play with you some more. Private message me if you read this and are interested. Back on topic, I've noticed, new players are not getting to experience DayZ in all its glory. They're not having the joy of running into some random dude and joining up with him... 9/10 players would have shot that guy when he came down to meet me, and 9/10 guys would have shot me after coming down. It was a very lucky thing that neither of us really wanted to kill each other. I hadn't met a friendly in weeks, I hadn't had that much fun in weeks. If the regulators *really* catch on, and others like them, maybe we'll be able to help make the game a little less kill on sight, and a little more cooperative. Right now the game is a one way slaughter, friendlies die, bandits prosper, friendlies become bandits. If more people make a stand, then maybe, just maybe, we can help bring the true and full Day Z experience to more new players. I think everyone agrees, the state the game is in, is no where near as good as it could be. Bandits don't enjoy killing as much (its lost its novelty) and friendlies can't enjoy anything, cus they get shot in the face.

Yeah, Oldtribe, I'd be willing to help with any administrative work that's not too complicated. I could get us free forums (best saved till we've grown), we can use free Ventrillo or similar programs for 8 person voice chat (though I can't participate) which I could set up, and of course if we did get forums I could list members and maintain it (if someone informed me that people have joined).
