    Type of zombie

Chernarus = fictional country Czech Republic = country on which the landscape of Chernarus is based = Vietnamese immigrant population Moreover, the USMC intervened in Chernarus. Therefore, Marines are liable to have been infected (assuming that this takes place around when ARMA II took place). And the UN clearly played a role in the outbreak, it doesn't get much more multi-cultural than that.

    helo's still endgame!

The overall presentation was great, I loved it. However, I (and this thread) am taking issue with the specific approach they're using to implement things like helicopters. I watched it, and Rocket blatantly asserted that we'll HAVE to switch servers to find parts (due to the allocation of loot by the hive). It's pretty clear cut. I'm taking issue with that approach. Simply because someone arrives at a different conclusion, doesn't mean that they didn't understand what was being presented. Not being condescending works wonders.

    The Battle Rifle Thread!

I'm not really concerned with likelihood. Railed accessories are easier from a development/modularity perspective to implement attachments.

    helo's still endgame!

I've always been of a similar mind. Either do away with public hive servers in favor of all private. Make the characters fixed to the server. Or reset character locations on server swap. I'd actually be in favor of the last one, as it would allow folks who have legitimate reasons to switch (in a public hive paradigm), like hooking up with friends or the server dies, the ability to do so. However, it would disallow for easy looting when hopping and would remove the pseudo-teleporting ability that server hopping allows.

    Type of zombie

Only types of zombies that DayZ needs to have - Sprinters (i.e. 28 Days Later, and should be the majority of zombies) - Shamblers (i.e. moronic Romero zombies, should be in the minority) - Crawlers (i.e. prone zombies from the mod, silent and unsuspecting to the ignorant survivor)
  6. My body is ready. And for the record, all or most of the ideas I've championed (persistent gardens, zombie aggro revamp, a focus on barricading existing buildings) are all inbound. Yay!

    helo's still endgame!

Meh, a lot of things are pretty unlikely to happen in DayZ. Yet they form the backbone of the experience. Not to mention that this type to thing seems DESIGNED to make helicopters, as you say, unlikely to be seen. I don't have an issue with helicopters, they caused some of the most tense moments I've ever had in a video game. With that said, I disagree heavily with their proposed approach. They NEED to address server-hopping before the majority of their proposed roadmap can happen.

Would you like DayZ on Console?

Yes, absolutely. If it can be feasibly done, absolutely. And I suspect people will talk about how controllers are somehow too caveman for DayZ. They aren't. Been playing DayZ with an Xbox controller since April 2012. It works like a dream. Get over it.

    helo's still endgame!

I'm not sure how they can keep talking about things like barricading buildings, persistent storage, and construction without addressing location-persistent server hopping. This wholly undercuts these types of mechanics, and needs to be addressed before they tackle them.

    helo's still endgame!

I suppose it's okay if it's only with big things like helicopters. I might be able to get behind that, simply because I'll probably NEVER use it. But if it starts to bleed into other areas, I'm not sure I'll be as content.

    helo's still endgame!

Right, but it involves a certain amount of risk like you said. Being able to fall back to a potentially "safe" server with your loot completely removes that risk. And right, if the items are limited based upon loot architecture, then it will be even MORE ridiculous. So a clan/group can hoard items on an empty server, and NOBODY can get access to them again because of that, unless the somehow figure out what server they're on (and then defeat a massive group of geared individuals). I'm all for hording loot, but it has to be natural and integrated. It can't make use of meta-mechanics.

    helo's still endgame!

Errr. This seems to contradict their supposed focus on "immersion", wholesale. I mean, the fact that you're consciously importing loot into your "home server" inherently undercuts any potential ideas of living in a "world". If I HAVE to server hop just to get loot, that will remove me from the experience. Likewise, it will provide for HEAVY loot-bias to clans/groups who can then hoard their finite loot on one server.
  14. Yeah, I mean it does. But they're getting better. They'll be great in the end-state I'm sure. They've always been awful in my opinion, especially in the mod.

    helo's still endgame!

So they appear to actually be ENCOURAGING server hopping? Ugh... Will wait until I see the stream to decide for myself, but this doesn't bode well. I love the idea of helicopters, truly. I love the idea of them being immensely hard to repair/maintain/fuel. However, requiring players to server-hop is a horrible approach. I'm beginning to think this hive loot management system will be awful.

    The Battle Rifle Thread!

I think they should have more weapons be like the M4, meaning with changeable foreguards/handguards/rails. So you could have a regular ol' FAL, but could loot a rail for the receiver or a railed foreguard like on the DSA FAL. I think this approach is preferable to having dedicated/specific optics like the PU scope.

    Ghillie suit, rangefinder ?

I suspect a lot will happen with all three aspects. Although your unreasonable hatred for the latter two only pleases me and is revealing of your argument. And they are excellent points, in consideration of the current Alpha build. Snipers couldn't really make use of suppressors in the mod, and do you honestly expect there to be NO situation in the SA where you're in an area with no zombies? Rocket has pretty much confirmed to the contrary, saying we'll be able to clear out towns temporarily, with nothing to say about random rural areas. Talking about the current state of the Alpha and not the future-state, which we have no idea what will be. Moreover, the idea of visual stealth ALWAYS stands as a potent advantage in PvP. So, regardless of whether or not there are un-mitigatable zombies (which I doubt there will be in the end-state) one can still exploit the advantages of a ghillie suit. And for the record, ghillie suits were invented by game hunters in Scotland. Not the military. Aaaaand there are civilian rangefinders used for hunting, relatively cheap, can be bought at your local Walmart or hunting shop.

    The Battle Rifle Thread!

TTsKO clothing is of Russian origin, and is regarded as some of the best (if not the best) clothing in the game. The SKS, Mosin, double-barrel shotgun, upcoming SVD, upcoming AKM, and many other random items are of Russian origin.

    The Battle Rifle Thread!

You should probably read the lore (and the thread, as we've already discussed this extensively). Chernarus was the subject of a USMC intervention in 2009 (as per the plot of ARMA II). Nevermind that it's a fictional country. And nevermind that countries often use weapons produced abroad (see the most recent Torchia tweet of a Prague gun shop in possession of an AR-10 and my post on the previous page). And nevermind that many post-Soviet countries use non-Warsaw Pact weaponry (see my post on the previous page). Are people really still caught up on this? Here's a nice DSA FAL, hopefully this'll get folks actually discussing battle rifles. Doubtful.

    Proper Forest!

Yeah, I mean I always want the forests to be better. But they've made leaps and bounds from the mod. Whoever was in-charge of revamping the forests for SA, did an amazing job. They look a lot better now with much more variety than the mod. Most forests that I've seen in SA have many more groves, rocks, streams, underbrush, and general clutter than in the mod. Looks great. No, it's still around. They just released a new trailer as well. It's coming out in May on Steam.

    The Battle Rifle Thread!

I'm not suggesting all of these weapons should be included. I'm using it as evidence that post-Soviet =/= Kalashnikov. I'm not sure I would call it "carelessness" or a "lack of quality" if they included a variety of weapons. They already sort of have anyhow. Lithuania has a supposed supply of 40,000 M14's. Fun fact! :D

    The Battle Rifle Thread!

Folks here's a list of former Soviet nations and/or Eastern European states that now use NATO weaponry. Not that the "realism" argument is one I endorse in the first place. Chernarus is fictional. - Germany (previously divided into West and Soviet-controlled East Germany) - Czech Republic - Estonia - Lithuania - Georgia - Poland - Slovakia - Latvia - Serbia - Croatia EDIT - Oh, and here's a supposed Russian soldier (I suspect he's some sort of contractor though) using an AR-15 in the current Crimean crisis

How often do you sever hop?

This is why I think they need to do away with the idea of public hives entirely. Characters fixed to the server. Has some drawbacks, but it makes for a much better experience in my opinion.

Absolutely, HK417 is definitely a battle rifle. Same with the Galatz (7.62 Galil). I always liked the Galatz.

    The Battle Rifle Thread!

I get your point of view, I'm just not sure as to why one has to overshadow the other. We can have both take prominent roles, through varying approaches, like rarity of loot as you, I, and others propose. I've spent my entire post history refuting the assumption that Chernarus is somehow only concerned with Eastern Bloc or Warsaw Pact weapons. - Chernarus is based on the Czech Republic, specifically Bohemia. In the real world, the Czech Military (ACR) uses a variety of weapons. AR-15's, Mk 48, M249, and M60 are amongst a few of the "Western" weapons used by the ACR, in addition to their Czech-made weapons. There are also many former Soviet states which use NATO weaponry extensively. However, real-world circumstance cannot be used as the sole yardstick for DayZ. See below. - The USMC, UN, and/or NATO forces are incorporated into the Armaverse, the fictional universe in which DayZ is also incorporated. It is therefore plausible that their weapons are to be found in Chernarus. The USMC intervened in Chernarus, as well as the Army in Takistan (which shares a border with Chernarus). - Chernarus is a fictional country, with fictional circumstances being applied to it (i.e. a zombie apocalypse). This therefore gives the developers creative license to incorporate weapons which may be uncommon in Eastern Bloc or former-Soviet states. - Black-market weapons sales are prevalent in failed states, or even modern Eastern Bloc states. For example Anders Behring Brevik (sp?) attempted to purchase the weapons he used for the "Utoya massacre" in Prague, the city in which BIS is based. Chinese Anti-materiel rifles can be found in Syria. High-speed-low-drag AR-15's can be found in Libya, Lebanon, and Syria. Russia makes use of expensive "Western" optics on many of their weapons now, like EOTechs and SpecterDRs. Hell, there's even some pictures coming out of Ukraine with Russian soldiers using AR-15's! Brand new FN2000's with GL's can be found from Libya to Gaza. There is no hard divide between NATO/Warsaw Pact weapons anymore in the real world. The case is even moreso in fictional Chernarus. Succinctly, Warsaw Pact weapons should be common. NATO weapons should be uncommon and specifically looted (i.e. barracks) in Chernarus. Not gone. Not hyper-rare as to be essentially not there. Either way, if you consider a "realistic" approach or a "fictional" approach, the presence of NATO weaponry is provided for. With that said, I agree with you that "improvised" weapons should have a role. But I'm not sure it should be the only role, or even a primary role. They can exist in a dualistic or trinary sense with looted weapons and melee weapons. I say this because I am absolutely sick and tired of idiotic Romero zombie tropes and Dead Island approaches which only focus on melee weapons. I'd actually posit that zombie video games/lore are two topics which are HEAVILY biased towards the use of melee weapons. I don't want DayZ to be a dick-swinging flamethrowing chainsaw zombie game (not saying that's what you're saying). I want it to be a prudent and visceral experience where efficiency is king and survival is god. People always decry the "tactical" aspect of DayZ, as if it's been overdone. Yet, I cannot think of one single zombie game (save games that followed DayZ) which placed an emphasis on "tactical" weapons and attachments.
