    R.I.P Elektro

Can count on one hand how many times I've been into Elektro/Cherno in the Standalone. Two hands for the mod. I'd rather each city be a clusterfuck, rather than just one or two. But I still want folks to push north, multiple ways of accomplishing both objectives though.

    Sooo about that side chat?

I mean, they should be looted objects in the sense that you don't have them on spawn. I don't think they should be overly rare. Making them hard to find makes their use niche and therefore unattractive versus competitive third-party programs (which are a problem unto themselves). Many items were fairly common in the mod, yet not everyone ran around with them. Likewise, I suspect there'll be a fixed range for walkies, so it's not like you'll be hearing everyone at once. Plus, you'll have to find a battery for them as well... which ostensibly will run out. Three separate hindrances to using walkies.

    Sooo about that side chat?

Again, if you're hearing something that you don't like, switch to another channel. There are plenty of frequencies to choose from. And that's also an interesting aspect made clear by Rocket many moons ago, radio comms aren't secure, other people can hear you.

    Sooo about that side chat?

The point of the walkie talkies is so that one can choose whether or not to communicate with someone. You don't want to hear screechy kids? Turn to a different frequency, or shut it off altogether. And plus, we'll still have to keep the batteries charged. I don't think they should be overly difficult to come across.

    Make them more common then?

    Cities and City Layout

I'm not entirely sure we can use "fresh food" loot as a reference for how long after the apocalypse is DayZ taking place. I mean, if your character is 6 months old and you're still finding fresh food on the shelves of the house you've looted 25 times over... You see what I'm saying?

Biggest blunder you have made in game

Enter a barracks on a populated server. /thread

    Cities and City Layout

TLOU takes place 20 years after the apocalypse. What's to say that DayZ doesn't take place a few weeks or months after the infection? It's not like buildings magically get overgrown and crumble, it takes years and/or extraneous circumstances. However, I do agree with you that they need to make Chernarus feel more like the SHTF. Traffic jams, crashed helicopters, overrun roadblocks, remnants of camps, refugee camps, etc.
  9. Not really. I mean, yeah we get to play the game, but with so many games going early-access these days it's never quite the same experience as buying a finished product. It's gradual rather than sudden. So your mind isn't blown away once DayZ comes out, because you've been testing it forever and have seen how it's grown incrementally. The most vivid experiences of my contact with video games have been from trying new experiences. If I had been part of the Halo testing process, I wouldn't have been blown away by the final product. Same goes for all of the monumental game experiences I've had. Sure, there's something inherent in the "sandbox" that sort of lends to this piecemeal involvement. But I feel that, had I not played the SA (or the mod for that matter) and they released it, and I played it, I would've been utterly floored at this novel product. But, I've seen DayZ grow incrementally since it started, so with every addition I'm sort of like "Neat, but big whoop." I guess what I'm trying to say is that, by giving people access to things like Alpha/Beta builds of games (as a recent paradigm) you're inherently undercutting the magnitude of your finished product.
  10. Seeing as Chess is an official sport, no. I don't much care for elevating something to the title of "sport", football, games, auto racing, just fun activities. Why does one have to have more merit than the other? Works both ways, people trying to assert gaming as a sport look silly and people looking down on gaming for not being a sport look silly. As to the subject of streaming, I despise it. Even the so-called "popular" streamers are insufferable, and yes to the OP, it's inherently misleading. Moreover, the idea that the DayZ community somehow owes its existence to streaming is adorable at best and toxic at worst. I do agree with you, I don't see much point to it. Easier for me to just play the game. Not like it requires any extra effort. Stream sniping, whooo boy. You're willfully broadcasting your location to the public, what the fuck do you think is going to happen? Don't whine about getting killed when you're PURPOSEFULLY DISPLAYING YOUR LOCATION.

    Chernarus Map Easter Egg

Don't want to sound pretentious, but I've known about this for a while. There used to be a sign north of Lopatino as well IIRC, I think near Skalka (when it used to be a thing). "Whether the map designers focused more on this fictional location or whether the focus is on the Czech Republic real life locale. We all know this real life location can be found on google maps, and the Chernarus layout matches almost exactly" Not sure what this means, we've already known that Chernarus was adjacent to Russia in the fiction. It just seems clear that they used their surroundings as an aesthetic basis for designing the fictional country of Chernarus. Cool easter egg though! There's also a designer's signature written in bushes on the western side of the map IIRC.

    Sooo about that side chat?

So much wrong with everything here.
  13. Katana67

Why is there still a crosshair ?

They just said they were going to remove it, like, within a few weeks ago they said it (if that).

    Sooo about that side chat?

Abso-effing-lutely not. Not text nor voice. 70% trolling/arguments, 20% bitching about getting killed, and 10% actually communicating. That was sidechat. Always. Turn it off forever and never look back. If you want to communicate with other players across the server, looted walkie talkies should substitute for side chat. It should NEVER be a taken-for-granted system of DayZ. It should be an item to be looted. One of those things that, yes, it was popular... but it's not good, beneficial, or worthwhile. Sort of like Justin Bieber and McDonalds.
  15. On the subject of the thread, I'm on the fence. I think it should be a choice as to what primary you choose, rather than having a backup. Perhaps having only certain types of weapons being able to be carried. Such as a submachine gun, shotgun, or PDW. That said, it should certainly factor in to the "weight/encumbrance" system. On the subject of storing weapons, this is a needed feature. Persistent storage has to account for storing primary weapons. This was a huge factor in the mod. Not sure why folks are so timid about firearms in DayZ. We need to approach the problem from a standpoint of putting prohibitive limitations, rather than arbitrary limits to what can be done. So, for example, you want to carry two M4s. Okay, you're going to be weighted down more than usual, won't be able to carry as much food/drink/med, and will (for instance) have hunger/thirst be amplified to compound your lack of inventory. Not just "Player X can carry Y lbs/kgs" and that's it.
  16. A few things about the mod, that I had missed/noticed. 1. Loot spawning in Deer Stands. Please? Please? 2. I swear to god our characters run slower in the mod. It could just be me, but it took a long effing time to hike up to NWAF. 3. The green HUD. Much more a fan of it than I am the white and font (*gasp* remember?) of the SA. 4. The loot is actually marginally comparable to the SA, only issue is that it's dispersed across one or two buildings per town. Whereas SA, it's spread out across tens of buildings. 5. Stary. Need I say more? 6. Searching for stashes. Was my main activity in the mod, and I've been lost without it in SA. 7. How awful the weapon models look by comparison to SA. Props. 8. Sniper rifles with decent optics. Granted, this needed to change in SA. The rifles were separated from the optics (huge deal) and the weapons/optics themselves are rarer. But my god, it's so helpful to have variable magnification optics. 9. Binoculars. 10. The old north. Skalka. The woods. Misty Peak. Pobeda Dam. I miss thee. EDIT - 11. The atmosphere in the mod is so much clearer and verdant. I never liked the blue tint that they gave the SA. DISCLAIMER - This isn't a dick-measuring "is the mod better than SA" piece. The reasons for the SA's status are obvious and wholly understandable/necessary. Just some stuff I caught from my perspective in trying the mod again.
  17. I don't think I've found anything more than an SKS there, maybe an M4. Definitely STANAG mags. I think the police stations are perfect the way they are. I'd actually say it's mostly civilian loot. Perhaps police/LE loot needs to be in its own category.
  18. Agreed on all points. Why they thought it prudent to put more military spawns on the coast is absolutely, totally beyond me. Not to mention that there just isn't that much military loot anyhow. I was a bit flabbergasted when I came upon barracks/jails in Zeleno and at Versnik/Dichina (SW of Kabanino). Not sure why these were added. I like the idea of spreading the military loot out in the north, but they went overboard (especially with damn near every town having a police station now).

Thread of Deeper mechanics to enhance gameplay

Will probably get moved to Suggestions, but here goes! [iDEA] - SIGNIFICANT IN-GAME COMMUNICATIONS [DESCRIPTION] - Lock "Direct Chat" always on. If your mic is plugged in and unmuted, you're able to be heard in-game. Period. Tough tits if you're eating a jelly donut at 150dB's or you can't control your pets. The game should not be catered to the off chance that you're a loud douchenozzle. If you want to remain quiet in DayZ, be quiet or mute your mic. Simple as that. Given that TS cannot, or will not, be mitigated, the best thing we can do is make sure that there's a slight chance that people will overhear you chatting with your massive clan on the other side of the map without having any in-game items to allow you to do so. - Better whispers. The radius of direct chat needs to be dependent on how loud the user is speaking. Yells can be heard much farther (100m) than a whisper (2m). A fixed and ubiquitous radius isn't going to work. - Include the in-game radio stations that were so vaunted before the release of Standalone. - Make Walkie Talkies more common and less cumbersome to use. Also, make them a persistent object.

    Machete

I'm surprised at how bad most of the melee weapons are, and just the melee system in general. Granted, far better than the mod, but it's approaching Elder Scrolls levels of vagueness. It is kind of a bummer that the machete is so weak, given that the alternative is a massive fire axe. For that matter, I think there needs to be more than one place in which we stow our melee weapons. Having a machete dug into my shoulder for storage probably isn't the most comfortable place to have it.

    The LMG/GPMG Thread!

I'd rather have the rails just be rare looted items than have them go through the trouble of rendering two separate weapons (railed foreguards and railed sight mounts). Same type of deal we've got now with the KAC RIS lootable for the M4. Plus, it'd add to the puzzle of putting your already rare weapon together the way you want it (and thus the risk of losing it goes up). So long as this sexy beast is possible... I'm good... And the short-shorts don't hurt much either... Oh Rhodesia, you and your 1970's attire.

    The LMG/GPMG Thread!

Well, most infantry M240's have rails on them now, and have for a while. I just put in an image of an FN MAG to make it more palatable. However, I doubt many of the FN MAGs in use in Eastern Europe are so equipped. Not that it matters, as the inclusion of rails on a weapon is primarily one of gameplay pragmatism rather than an emulation of reality (see the FN FAL w/ NVS in ARMA II). I don't mind either way. The M240G came without optics in the mod (even though it has a rail capable of mounting them), and I was fine with that. However, it would make sense with my modularity vs. commonality dichotomy between Warsaw Pact/NATO weaponry if the M240 were more capable of mounting generic optics. Not sure I'd want RPKs to be as inaccurate (whatever you mean by that) as a vanilla AK. They have longer/heavier barrels solely for the purpose of accuracy. I don't really have an issue with optics on any LMGs to be honest.

Run faster with fire axe in hand?

Duh, you run faster with the knife! Everybody knows that!
