So yeah, a recent Reddit post from Torchia cites the fact that he's interested in having a mid-length, fixed stock, AR-15 in DayZ. Again, not entirely on-board with his reasoning here (i.e. that somehow a fixed-stock and/or mid-length makes the weapon more "civilian"). I just don't see much point in having an AR that's, at least aesthetically, similar to the M4 we've got now rather than an M16 variant which is more distinct. Granted, they're all AR-15's, but a mid-length AR that's somehow more limited than the M4 in terms of attachments just seems without a use. I hope that the stock doesn't remain fixed and can be fitted with looted stocks. Seems to be a bit of a wasted resource if the stocks are not interchangeable. To be fair, I think a mid-length AR would be a cool addition. Just, not instead of a proper M16. And yes, I recognize that he's said this isn't really on his plate at the moment. Just seems like a bit of an odd choice. For that matter, they've got an M4 in already. Is it possible to just find looted mid-length, SPR, and/or full-length kits? Wouldn't that be more efficient than making an entirely new weapon? There's probably some hocus pocus regarding how the weapons are implemented preventing this kind of modularity. Perhaps they should add barrels to the "attachments" list. EDIT - I'm unsure if M16's use the same buffer tube as M4's, I have never seen a buffer tube not designed for a retractable stock (even on fixed-stock models). But I suspect they exist, I remember seeing some smooth buffer tubes. Could've been for the M16 w/ fixed stock. Apparently the buffer springs are different though.

Figured it out. Instead of the mid-length AR-15, I think Torchia needs to pursue the L129A1. Reasoning - The UK purchased thousands of them, and it's a good bet that the UK was or could have been present in Chernarus (or neighboring Takistan). - Torchia recently commented on a handsome kitted-out AR-10 in a local Prague gun shop (essentially an analog). - Luvo Prague, a Czech company, manufactures similar AR-10 variants. - 16" barrel, pretty mid-length (although no longer referring to the gas system) to me. - Provides a rare, modular alternative to the inbound SVD. - Heavy hitting 7.62x51 round would actually differentiate it in-game from the current AR-15 (M4A1) we've got now. - Hell, you could even give it a fixed stock a la Mk 11 to emulate Torchia's stated goal of having a fixed-stock AR-15.

It would be better if door states were persistent, but they're not. A randomized open/close state like they plan on implementing is a good middle ground.
-
Yep, but that's pretty... specific... and fictional... reasoning. "Could be" that it's left over from an intervention. "Could be" that the <insert weapon> was purchased by the Chernarussian <insert military organization here>. And the fact that it's looted in military buildings pretty much casts that theory asunder. Either way, sort of a futile effort. And for giggles, not sure why we need to explain away the PRESS vest either way.
-
No idea. As an aside, does anyone else purposefully close all the doors on buildings which you've already looted? Always wanted to know if more people did this.

Don't the tactical shirts have American flag IR tags?

I do believe the UK was present in Chernarus (as per the inclusion of UK vests) and perhaps even the armed forces of New Zealand (as per the inclusion of the NZAF beret). Never mind that most Commonwealth weaponry is pretty ubiquitous these days, was a Sterling SMG in the display of one of the images of a gun shop in Prague, and the FAL/SLR platform is pretty widely distributed (I think they were produced in Austria as well). But, I'll say what I've always said, the developers seem to be aiming their weapon lineup at creating a fictional set of weapons for their fictional land. So on both sides, trying to parse a "rhyme or reason" to any of it seems to be inapplicable. At least at this early stage, they're just making a fictional weapon lineup. If there was some coherent backstory to DayZ, then we could actually gauge whether a weapon is plausible or not. But there really isn't. And plus, I think they included the Encore just to be the "handgun hunting" weapon. So I think people get caught up too much in the specific model, rather than what the weapon does. I never thought they were hell-bent on emulating reality in DayZ in terms of the weapon lineup. Even if they were, the reality of the Czech Republic and other Eastern European/former-Soviet nations incorporates a plethora of diverse weapons. This is the reality that I think people are unaware of when they cite certain weapons as "immersion breaking," to say nothing of the fiction of DayZ. There's no hard divide anymore between East and West, at least in terms of weapons. There are grey areas, especially in the transitional states in Eastern Europe. I think it's good that they're using the Czech Republic as a baseline, as it is a nexus for many different types of weapons. Perhaps this (although I highly doubt it) will steer the conversation away from "whether or not a weapon should be there as per the dictates of reality" to "what can this type of weapon offer gameplay".

I'd rather have vanilla DayZ just encompass both threatening zombies and threatening environments (i.e. disease, survival, weather, etc.) I don't see any reason that it should be a "one or the other" scenario.

Why is everyone an A$$hole when playing dayz?
Katana67 replied to TranquilityEden's topic in General Discussion
I think it'd be interesting for someone to do a study on the disassociating affects that a game can have on psychology in a situation where no real consequence is employed. PvP is a part of DayZ. I don't want it to go away, nor do I want it to be marginalized ever by the endorsement of PvE servers. However, there are mechanics which can be implemented which provide alternative activities. Because right now, PvP is the only real activity besides looting. Similarly, there are mechanics which can be employed that add consequence to PvP. - More numerous and threatening zombies - Stealth in avoiding zombie aggro - Persistent storage - Increased rarity of loot - Increased significance of survival mechanics (i.e. eating/drinking, etc.) - Encumbrance All things which weigh on PvP, which should always be a factor. However, adding nuance to that PvP makes all the sense in the world to me. -
Nah, but I do want them to be more resilient if not shot in a vital area. They aren't rotting corpses, they're infected human beings. So, whatever brings a man down, should be what brings a zombie down.

I'm more interested in their work surrounding the renderer.
-
Do we have any idea of what magnification the PSO scope will be at in DayZ? I mean, I think 4x would be bang on for the AKM, but a bit lacking for the SVD. I think a 6x or 8x version would be ideal for the SVD.
-
I still think they need to give us an incremental animation for opening doors, rather than having our characters standing there like a mannequin while the door magically opens before your avatar.
-
I've seen nothing to lead me to believe that it won't be the case. They haven't balanced the loot at all yet. How can we assume it'll be one way or the other? I want these weapons to be rare. And either way, see my sig. What is apparent to me, is that they're creating a unique lineup of weapons to suit their fictional environment and not adhering strictly to "real-world" circumstance. I say bring it on. I'm not entirely sure how this is somehow a reflection of an error or lack of integrity on the part of the developers.

Different Scopes For The M4A1 Functionality Still In The Works?
Katana67 replied to Deathlove's topic in General Discussion
I'd eventually like to see at least a few battery types, because shoving a 9V in everything sort of defeats the purpose of rarity with optics. I'm sure it'll change once they've balanced the loot, but I don't see why the 9V should be the only battery. That said, I really don't know how they're going to approach attachments at this point. From an "ease of development" perspective, I would think that just making a slew of 1913-compatible attachments would be easier than making weapon-specific ones (because they all play off the same railed interface). For weapons that do not come standard with rails, looted rail mounts/foreguards should be an option. It just seems cumbersome to me (from a development point of view), to be designing weapon-specific optics like the PSO which can only fit on one or a few weapons. If they want to give the AKM a CQC capability, then they'd have to design a whole new optic model. Rather than just having a looted rail be available upon which a player could mount whatever he/she can find. Although it does make sense for them to split the optics up by Warsaw Pact/NATO from a tiered commonality perspective, I'd rather them explore the 1913 interface more so, if only for ease of development (this is speculative). As for batteries, I think it's all part of the system. Batteries for your optics and lights. Cleaning kit for your weapon. I'd like to see even more of a maintenance process in keeping your weapons up to snuff. -
The same sort of thing used to happen (and still does to my knowledge) when one climbs the ladders of a Deer Stand. Oddly.
-
I am missing the Commonwealth weaponry, SMLE and L1A1/FAL need to happen for sure.
-
Yeah, I have no issue with it at all. Although I think your characterization of the forum is a bit off-point, this pistol is probably going to be chambered in an existing round. I think it's chambered in some 7.62/.30 round, perhaps 7.62x51 as it's already in. So, it's not like it's going to add a new ammo type and more variety in that regard. If anything, it'll make the existing ammo more applicable to a wider variety of weapons, rather than having certain cartridges be specific (and thus making for more various looting) to certain weapons.

There was a Mauser screenshot from early on in the SA, probably just a placeholder... let me find it... Honestly, I'd rather a CZ 550 or Remington 700. I'd even take a SMLE over the Mauser, too aesthetically similar to the Mosin (even though I recognize the differences).
-
Not the most elegant looking thing... but, neat? Although I don't mind the Mosin being able to mount the LRS at all, I do think it should be at least somewhat limited to the PU scope (given how common the Mosin is). But until we get another decent bolt-action, I think it's fine as-is.

Check out the Suggestions forum and the Rezzed 2014 footage of Rocket's presentation! Most of this is in either one of them somewhere.

To me, it just signifies that we need a more permanent and applicable solution to combat logging, server hopping, and ghosting (or any combination of the overlapping three).

Desert Night Camo (CCU, honest to god I have no idea what this camo is actually called). And some kinda' Rhodesian camo por favor...
-
I think it's pretty rad actually. Russia has a pretty awesome potpourri of camo patterns, wouldn't be opposed to any of them really (including the Multicam used by FSB/Spetsnaz these days).
