No I play on very high. The skyboxes/clouds are bland and formless. Especially when it starts storming.

This is the only reason why I think 5.45x39 should've been included for the AK-74M/AK-101. You can't have 5.56x45 supplying one of the rarest weapons in the game (which spawns at some of the rarest locations in the game, meaning helicopter crashes) and also have it supplying an assault rifle that's able to be found at less-common locations. If they want to have 5.56x45 supply the AK-101, they have to make it more common via spawning at conventional locations. But, if they want to have the use of the M4A1 be a rare occurrence, they can't do that. Otherwise, once someone finds an M4A1 they can arm it easily from conventional locations. Of course, I don't even believe assault rifles should be all that rare to begin with (given their inherent intermediate and middle-of-the-road nature). But it's interesting to see this being an issue of contention in-game as they add more weapons.

Should Tents be tied to a particular server or not?
Katana67 replied to trev186's topic in General Discussion
Right, and I don't want tents following players across servers. I don't even want players being able to move cross-server with the same avatar/character to begin with, but that's not what this thread is about. -
Experimental is different, there are seldom empty servers on experimental. With public hive, there are massive swathes of unlooted low-population servers to hop to. Again, the issue isn't loot... it's cross-server persistence. Which is why I believe we need to lock the avatars/characters to a specific server and be done with hives dictating things like cross-server persistence and instead have the hives be managing loot. Further underscoring the issue of having a FPS-style server architecture as the smallest delineation, in combination with an attempted "traditional MMO" persistence approach.

Should Tents be tied to a particular server or not?
Katana67 replied to trev186's topic in General Discussion
Never should follow the player cross-server. Because cross-server persistence and server-specific persistence, at the same time, is silly. The issue here isn't tents, or storage. It's unregulated cross-server persistence. -
I mean, slower loot respawns only make server hopping more attractive. It's even more expedient to just swap to an empty server than wait for stuff to respawn. This is an issue now, but it would be even worse if the respawns were slower. The only remedy to server hopping, in my opinion, is to disallow it in the first place. Or, somewhat less preferably, reset character positions when swapping servers.

The in-game description for the Gorka-E camouflage pants is as follows... "Tactical pants used by the unit stationed at Gorka, Chernarus." This is what I was talking about with regard to fiction and integrating lore into DayZ and/or Chernarus. Now, of course, this could be just a clever use of wording, as the real-life camouflage pattern can indeed be called "Gorka-E." However, the description explicitly mentions a circumstance (i.e. a military/police unit stationed in Gorka). Several tracts of interpretation could be applied here. First, that Gorka was the host to a Russian military unit prior to, or during, the outbreak. Second, that this is evidence of some sort of internal Chernarussian unit stationed in Gorka prior to, or during, the outbreak. There are other tangential considerations, like perhaps other nations having stationed troops there which also used "Gorka-E." However, a Russian or Chernarussian garrison seem to be the most likely explanations. Now, what does this mean for the game? Well, it can mean nothing... this is an item. Or, it could translate into a military base/camp/garrison in Gorka. I'd like to see the latter happen, to replace the since-vacated Stary Sobor military camp. Gorka is a bit off-center from where I personally would add a Stary Sobor analog (i.e. Guglovo or even just Novy). But, it could work. EDIT - I took the liberty of writing a brief unit history for the potential lore item. 41st Internal Special Purpose Detachment (отряд специального назначения, OSN), Black Forest (черный лес). Unit History Formed in 2007 in response to instability caused by ChDKZ (Chedaki) guerillas in the eastern regions of Chernarus, the 41st OSN drew upon Chernarussian Defence Force (CDF) veterans and created a new special internal paramilitary unit. Based out of FOB Sokol (сокол), in Gorka, the 41st OSN saw action in multiple operations against ChDKZ guerillas. In 2009, after the Chernarussian Civil War, Minister of the Interior Arseniy Ryazanov re-purposed the 41st OSN for peacekeeping operations. The unit was mainly engaged in counter-insurgency operations, conducting small-scale raids in Gorka, Novy Sobor, and Guglovo against suspected ChDKZ remnant forces. The 41st OSN was therefore transferred to the NATO Chernarus Force (CFOR) command, working alongside Russian and Georgian contingents out of FOB Berkut at Krasnostav. Later, during the outbreak of 2014, the 41st OSN was again subsumed under the command of an international organization, the newly formed UNOCHER (United Nations Operation Chernarus). The unit was ordered to construct roadblocks along the road from Novy Sobor to Gorka near Altar in order to enforce UNOCHER quarantine protocols. As the infection containment measures failed in the west, originating near Myshkino and Zelenogorsk, the 41st OSN became inundated with refugees flowing east towards Berezino and Krasnostav. In this hectic climate, elements of the unit were alleged to have carried out unauthorized killings of civilians, as per the reporting of South Zagoria Independent journalist Olga Poroshenko. The 41st OSN was then divided into a roadblock and garrisoned contingent, with the bulk of the unit remaining within the makeshift perimeter of Gorka. As the infected began to outnumber the refugee population, the 41st OSN was authorized to use lethal force by UNOCHER command. Radio contact with UNOCHER command was maintained until 12 May 2014 at 0300 local. Platoon leaders reported being trapped by infected personnel inside of FOB Sokol and the Gorka police station.

Is carrying two primaries weapons not really possible now?
Katana67 replied to Zed's Dead's topic in General Discussion
You can't press the spacebar? Always lowers my weapon. I was running with an AK-101 on my back and an AKM in-hand all day yesterday just fine. -
This is what I mean about the grey grass thing...
-
Always said that they need to revamp the aggro and give the player a bit of a stealth capability before adding any more zombies. The insta-respawn, pre-aggro, system is ridiculous.

I approve this message. Even though I don't care for melee weapons

Right but demand for servers isn't based upon anything other than player demand. The providers are doing just that, providing to supply that demand. But the demand is always based upon what the renters want. You're right in saying that it's sort of up to the server hosts. But at the end of the day, if someone wants to rent a server... they're going to do so. Hell, I doubt half of the people even rent servers for them to be popular. They do it so they can have their little slice of undisturbed DayZ. Meh, I think we're getting there. The Gorka and SMERSH stuff is a big step. Same with the weapons like the AK-101, AKM, and M4A1. So is the potential for the Ballistic Vest. And we've got Flecktarn, DPM, and US-flagged tactical shirts. It's certainly arguable as to whether DayZ should be "militarized" even if it does acknowledge the events of ARMA II. I agree that it should be, but to a point. I get where they're coming from in adding more "civilian" weaponry, and I like that approach. But we can have our cake and eat it too. With things like the "loot management system" we can actually have appropriate military gear actually be rare enough to justify the advantages it confers on the player. The only "military gear" I think DayZ absolutely needs right now (vice me just wanting it out of fondness or a desire for variety) is a diverse "high-end" weapons lineup composed of LMGs/GPMGs, battle rifles/DMRs, and dedicated sniper rifles. Likewise, the typical military gear per-se like NVGs and the like. This is to create a distinct "high-end" to encourage player mobility, perhaps interaction, and give use to the persistent storage pieces being implemented. I agree that I'd like to see more stuff like you say, US gear, CDF and/or Russian gear, and other international gear. But I don't think it's for lack of trying or lack of imagination that we don't have this stuff yet. They can only do so much for each patch, and what they do add is pretty substantial (even from just an items/art perspective).

Not sure when I'd like it to happen, but I agree. Doesn't matter to me, gearing is half (or in most cases, all of) the fun in DayZ as of now.
-
One of the flaws with both of our approaches, is inherent in how DayZ is executed. It tries to walk the proverbial tightrope between hive persistence and server persistence. So if your server falls out of favor, is marginalized, or regulated into obscurity, you lose an element (or the entirety) of your character. That and people pay rent for servers, wouldn't be fair to them to dictate up-time or priority based upon something that's totally out of their control.

IIRC there's also a compensator on file for the CR527. Would be neat if the AK-101 and M4A1 could get an aftermarket compensator/brake. I'm sure there are some for the AKM as well, just don't know of any. That and they could make anything they want (bananas included) function as a compensator. Aside from underbarrel attachments, I think muzzle attachments are perhaps the most unloved portion of the attachment system so far.

One of my first posts when Standalone came out addressed this very issue. Dynamic server number allotment based upon in-game population at any given time. Meaning, rather than have a server for each player... have enough servers to accommodate every player, and no more. Doesn't seem feasible given the public hive model, and server rental model, but I'd do it if I were in-charge.

The problems facing weapon balance (which is multifaceted) are legion. But yes, duping is a problem that needs to be addressed and fixed outright. I get that hacking will always be a thing, but duping seems like something that can be fixed wholesale eventually. Plus it'd shut up the people who often say, "You can't add X! It'd just get duped to oblivion and X would be all over the place! Therefore, you cannot add X ever!"

Yar, and a RIS handguard. Hopefully the foregrip is detachable, and thus able to be fitted to an AKM/AK-101 and M4A1.

Sway shouldn't really be so bad as to force only "trap" shooting (i.e. waiting for the target to cross your reticle). It should be something to be mitigated by the player through a variety of different means (i.e. supported positions, bipods, counteracting sway) and not just through waiting for your crosshair to sway over your target.

What clothing set/weapons would you add if you could?

Some magazines need their spawn locations and frequencies tweaked. That's all.

Money.

Yeah, I mean a very under-mentioned issue with helicopters in the mod was that their ammunition respawned on server restart. That, and they came with machine guns as standard, loaded, with zero maintenance requirements or chance of being damaged/less effective/inoperable.

Not sure, Torchia has said that he plans on dividing 7.62x51 in-game up into 7.62x54R and .308 respectively. I can, because anyone speaking for a community... without having any data to back what they're saying up, or, without having been appointed to speak for a community, has no business doing so. Or rather, they can, but it doesn't mean anything. I speak for myself, because it's all I can do. I cannot speak for anyone else because I don't have any one else's opinion, nor have I been delegated to speak on anyone's behalf. Using the "community" in support of one's argument, without having anything to actually back that assertion up, just reduces the efficacy of the argument. In other words, it's a more potent endeavor to actually just... advocate for what you want... rather than operating under the guise of a "community" desire.

Yeah I mean the sway isn't very well done. It's something really hard to do well in video games, from both a "realistic" and pragmatic point of view. When I aim my Mosin, again, I'm not shoving the muzzle side to side drunkenly in a 12-inch wide figure-eight. Sway, for me at least, is largely vertical. I'd say (just eyeballing) that it's 70% vertical and 30% horizontal in terms of distance moved. I contribute this to the fact that the weapon is shouldered, vice floating around aimlessly. What dictates the motion of my weapon moreso than unsteadiness in my hands, is my breath, which is relatively linear (your chest heaves up and down). And again, I don't really think that sprinting/running should throw off your aim that much. I mean, I like that the sway has been increased because it encourages people to take their time, but there's a point at which it becomes prohibitive. I think we're pretty close to that point, so perhaps some more tweaking is in order. It isn't jumping point-to-point as it was/is in ARMA II, which is great. But it isn't a massive lazy side to side motion as it is now.
