Civilian clothing items that you'd like to see in the game
Katana67 replied to LeeVanSpliff's topic in General Discussion
Gaiters Gators -
So first off... /hnnnnngh We've known about the ballistic vest from the various leaks and game files for a while now. But this is the first time I personally have seen it rendered in-game as an inventory item. This could, in addition to things like the incoming SPOSN/SMERSH setup (to a certain extent), lead to a change in modularity of chest rigs. Or, it could just be a status-quo type of thing with each vest/rig being treated as one distinct entity. However, would you like to see some sort of variance with these? Now that they've added slots for hats (fishing hooks, rad) and boots (knife slots, also rad) I think it might be a good time to add some other forms of "modular" clothing. I would personally support the addition of looted pockets/pouches/holsters (there's a different "vest holster" in the game files as well, which I assume is some sort of crossdraw) as separately looted items. And also, it would be cool if we could find differently rated plate inserts. So that there'd be a bit of an "unknown" when you see someone with a ballistic vest. Who knows? They could have nothing more than cloth and tissue paper between them and their vital organs. Or, conversely, they could have a SAPI plate underneath which is capable of vaporizing your puny pistol rounds. That and it could, in addition to the anti-stab and press vests we've got now, allow the developers to modulate how the player behaves when hit. So, I'd imagine (never been shot myself, very thankful for that) that getting shot with a plate carrier wouldn't be something to ignore. What do you think?

What Weapons Warrant Being Hyper-Rare and/or Regulated?
Katana67 replied to Katana67's topic in General Discussion
On an unrelated note, I was just going through the list of weapons from ARMA III and couldn't help but wonder why it wasn't possible/ideal to just port a few of them over. At least the models, which look lovely. To my knowledge, that's what they did with the FNX. I mean, I obviously don't think that all of them should be ported over (if that's even possible/preferable)... but some of them should. But I'm sure there are multiple reasons why they're developing pretty much all-new weapons for DayZ. -
What Weapons Warrant Being Hyper-Rare and/or Regulated?
Katana67 replied to Katana67's topic in General Discussion
The only optics I think should be outright regulated via the management system are pretty much just anything above 4x. And even then, there should certainly be provisions for hunting scopes. ACOGs and PSO-1s should just be much rarer, but not regulated. And I actually wouldn't mind it if Aimpoints, EOTechs, Kobras and the like were made more common actually. That and it'd be great if some actually required batteries. I just don't see them all that much (given that all of them now spawn at helicopter crashes), can only be used on M4A1s, FNXs, and MP5Ks currently, and they don't really confer all that much of an advantage over someone using irons. Whereas magnified optics actually add capability to a weapon. That and weapons like the AKs require a separate rail system to mount them (IIRC Torchia has said that he's interested in having a Docter-type sight available for the AKs). -
If we abide by "realism", then yes. But some, including myself perhaps (even though I don't think this particular instance is one in which people should be choosing between storage/protection) would argue that it should be one or the other, because of pragmatic gameplay concerns in having the player make a conscious choice with certain pros and cons. And there's no real precedent in DayZ for being able to wear a vest and a plate carrier/armored whatever. Would be neat though!
-
Why not? Although, I think the main issue with 9mm is that the weapons are no more common than their harder hitting .45 ACP counterparts. Or, they're no more common than their harder hitting 7.62x39, 7.62x51, and 5.56x45 counterparts. I still have yet to find an MP5K. So, if SMGs were a bit more common as to account for their shortcomings... and rifles were a bit rarer, then I think we'd see these weapons used a bit more often out of necessity.

What Weapons Warrant Being Hyper-Rare and/or Regulated?
Katana67 replied to Katana67's topic in General Discussion
Now that we've got a robust weapon lineup (which I feel will be relatively complete once we've got the pump-actions in the game), I feel it's becoming more and more necessary to have a distinct "high-end" (in terms of weapons and gear) towards which players can strive. We're already seeing this with things like the M4A1 spawning at helicopter crashes, and it is likely that we'll see more extreme examples of this once the proposed "loot management system" is implemented. I've taken the liberty of assessing the two most likely candidates for the initial implementation of a "high-end" weapons lineup, based upon what we've got already and what we know is coming down the pipes (i.e. the SVD). Likewise, I've added another for your consideration. SVD - 10 round magazine, 7.62x54R* - PSO-1 Scope* - Potentially paintable furniture - Potential for a higher-magnification optic - Potential for a camouflage netting treatment* - Potential for a bipod PKM - 100 round magazine, 7.62x54R* - Potential for optics - Potential for paintable furniture - Potential for bipod - Potential for looted ammunition links OTs-14-1A - 30 round magazine, 7.62x39* - More just a cool looking party piece But I think the PKM and SVD are our best bet at initial implementation. -
This is something I'd like to see. Not how many people are in the server, while I'm on the server. Not who specifically is in the server, while I'm on the server. Just what server I'm on.

Christ, when did this become a dick-measuring video game/firearm "experience" resume-off? Focus on the arguments made, not the people making them.
-
There's nothing sneerful, whatever you mean by that, about using scare quotations. I cannot be held accountable to everyone's subjective interpretation of "realism." What I think is realism, may not be what you think is realism. Hence why I put it in quotations. The need for which is demonstrated in your final statement, "So the more realistic the game is, the better it will get." I don't believe that, hence why I put "realism" in quotations because it means different things to different people.
-
Compared to what we had in the mod, I think people really take for granted the improvements they've made to having buildings be enterable. But yes, some buildings (like the military jail and barracks) need to be made less linear.
-
I ignored it because I never asserted it in the first place. Mosin owners would be more likely to own 7.62x54R in the real-world. That doesn't mean that likelihood should be represented in DayZ. Hence why I said "'Realism' be damned" in my first effing response.
-
I put the quotations around specific words, not your argument. See "realism" and "civilian" because those terms are subjectively applied. Don't stand there and tell me that I'm not focusing on your argument, when you're then one being pedantic and requesting that I clarify how I use quotations... which we're now, subsequently, talking about quotations instead of the topic itself. I'm more than willing to get back on-topic if you are.

So whats every one gonna build/fortify when all that gets added?
Katana67 replied to Sirwarriant12's topic in General Discussion
Agreed, but I think it's contingent upon how they polish persistent items. Gotta' get that past initial implementation first before they can outline their plan for construction. -
I'm quoting because the words are used differently by different people and I don't particularly assign much value to those meanings, so I put them in quotations to indicate a colloquial use. I'm sort of over how pedantic people get on this forum. I put things in quotations to indicate that they're either a quoted text... or because the terms are subjective and I can't be accountable to everyone's interpretation. If you want me to put the term so-called before the word realism, then I can do that all day. The quotations accomplish the same objective. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scare_quotes

Because I want gearing a weapon to be a dedicated process. If we're spawning magazines next to weapons, then that process gets truncated and streamlined to an extent. Having "civilian" magazines spawn in residential buildings makes them more common and likely to be found already, I don't see any reason why we would need to go further than that. It becomes a 2+1=3 process, rather than a 1+1+1=3 process. "Realism" be damned (even though, the concept of magazines and weapons being together in real life is situational), it makes for a better gearing process in my opinion and makes the use of weapons all the more consequential.

[Being nice] Should I rob people for their M4A1?
Katana67 replied to HeroAtDay BanditAtNight's topic in General Discussion
Neat! I still don't see any reason to use it over something like the AK-101 or AKM, when they're much easier to keep going and find in the first place. They both shoot pretty straight as far as I can tell, with or without attachments. Might have to defer to Gews for specifics. -

Katana67 replied to HeroAtDay BanditAtNight's topic in General Discussion
I have no idea of the statistics these days, but I don't see any reason to go out of your way to get an M4A1 from anywhere (aside from the "status symbol" factor). AK-101 seems like a much better choice. Magazines spawn in regular military buildings. Attachments can be transferred from the AKM to AK-101. Plus it looks rad. AKM is perhaps an even better choice as it stands now. Magazines spawn in regular military buildings, including the 75 rounder. Attachments are relatively easy to come by. Ammunition spawns all over the place. But then again, I don't think assault rifles are, or should be, anything special. They're inherently intermediate and mid-tier in almost every aspect. -
Spawning in the same types of buildings, yes please, and it's being worked on in .48 if the feeds coming out of Reddit are to be believed. Spawning magazines at the same time, alongside of their respective weapons, no thank you. And I'm a little confused about the FNX. It only spawns in military buildings, the same applies to its magazines. Not sure I see a problem with that. Sure, the FNX is a "civilian" weapon in the most vague sense that it isn't really used by a military currently. But it's functionally the same as most service pistols, if not more so.
-
The developers have pretty much stated that they're going to be doing this. Not in so many words, but they intend on streamlining the reload system of individual rounds. It's still less-effective than having a magazine, requiring you to reload after every shot (in some cases, like with the SKS and shotguns, the full reload would still be pretty darn lengthy). But forgoes some of the unnecessary encumbrance of having to rummage around in the clumsy inventory.

Supposedly in the game files...

Oddly enough, I've been trying to go melee weapon-less for a while now. Which is sort of dumb, as it's only because I don't like where they've chosen to have our weapons stored (i.e. on the right side of the avatar's back). Something that just constantly bothers me about having a Machete essentially lodged in one's shoulder, or floating behind one's head. Definitely proving difficult, as the never-ending train of zombies that comes after I fire my weapon does get old (hence why I don't have any ammo for my AK-101 right now). As to the skinning of animals bit, I don't think I've been hunting yet. I just haven't had the need to, with the copious amount of food/drink available elsewhere. I don't see hunting being part of my routine (which I'd love) unless it's made more attractive via decreasing the amount of edible food that drops as loot. But that's a balance discussion. That and any of the crafted bits (specifically backpacks and pouches) that you get from skinning are similarly outclassed by the widely available, and superior in terms of carry capacity, backpacks.

Have snap loaders for the Blaze gone in 0.47?
Katana67 replied to therunningmanz's topic in General Discussion
Try the military tents at NWAF too, I find snaploaders there all of the time. They're small, so you might have to use the "Vicinity" function to find the ones that are clipping through floors/ground. -
This wouldn't decrease the "tension" at all. I'd posit that it'd increase it, because if I had spent time finding a rare-ass Ballistic Vest... rare-ass SAPI plate... and rare-ass MOLLE pouches... I wouldn't want to lose it. But acting like "tension" is some sort of monolithic thing for everyone doesn't really have much merit in my book. If you have expended time/effort/risk to get something, you should have an advantage over someone else who hasn't done so. You can make the argument about any piece of gear in the game. Why should we have .22 LR rifles? It gives you an advantage over an unarmed fresh spawn. See? It's silly... gaining advantages over someone are pillars of what DayZ is. A freshspawn can still kill a geared player (with ballistic vest) with a headshot... or a Mosin round to the chest... or by a myriad of other ways of killing someone... I mean, you're acting as if these make players invincible. Yes, it is fascinating. Mostly because people commit to one ideology or another. That's what allows me to be flexible and prudent, because I don't abide by one ideology and am willing to seek compromise. Whereas people who focus on "realism" or "gameplay" or "mil-sim" or "survival" entirely, often are at odds with themselves in what they are actually saying. Making them hypocrites and they inevitably destroy any semblance of legitimacy in what they say.

You just posted the same thing twice in two separate instances... see my response and drop the condescension. And I'm not sure what evidence you're citing to say that "most SKS users have" stripper clips. I rarely come across them. So, unless you've got any evidence to back up what you're saying... it's just as anecdotal as what I'm saying. EDIT - So, you're now faulting me for responding to something that you said. I can't really argue with someone who doesn't wield thought coherently.
