December Round-up: ༼ つ ◕_◕ ༽つ GIVE SA
Katana67 replied to SmashT's topic in Mod Announcements & Info
The one thing the apologists need to recognize is that this was a divided issue. Rocket, by his own admission, was not in favor of this solution. Likewise, they had decided not to go this route long ago. The reason it was submitted to the community was to (hopefully) add a bit of clarity to that already divided issue. So it's not like this awesome plan that they all agreed upon was scuttled by moronic Reddit posters. A divided issue was submitted to a divided community. Surprise, unexpected results occurred. -

One of those things I could live without, I've never really seen it done well to be honest. When it is done, it's more like a tube falling off of another tube rather than realistic carnage. Given the (relative) inflexibility of the skeletons I don't really see this happening. Perhaps for zombies, but even then, it'd require new animations for a combination of things (right-leg missing, left-leg missing, both legs missing, crawling with right arm, crawling with no arms, wriggling around just as a torso, etc.) -

I understand their reasoning for putting it up to the community and the pros and cons of it all. But none of it screams "necessity" to me. So the fact that it got voted up/down doesn't matter, which is what a lot of people are keying in on. Likewise, from my own personal point of view, I think that (regardless of the necessity) it's better to just keep the status-quo rather than deal with potential issues of favoritism, which is essentially Rocket's stance as I understand it. I'd rather them wait a bit longer than have to address ancillary things like favoritism, never mind my own personal feelings about the "principle" of the matter. -

I think what needs to be established, that hasn't been (to my knowledge) is "Why did this need to happen?" Moreover, is this necessary? Are they wanting to include streamers to bolster their ranks because they cannot accomplish an adequate pre-release test? Or are they wanting to give time to streamers to gather information before releasing it to the public post-release? If it really needed to happen I think they'd've just gone ahead and done it. And if it's not necessary, I don't think it's worth having to navigate a potential minefield of favoritism from this point forward. This is somewhat academic at this point, as it seems Rocket's made up his mind. -

To some, it's not about the ends. Given Rocket's qualms, it's less about getting some preliminary testing done and more about not wanting to play favorites. I think Rocket's stance is commendable. He didn't have to put it to the community either, so it's clearly a conflicted issue with the developers and is by no means cut and dry in terms of the debate. -

I never suggested that. I'm in favor of keeping the status-quo and have equal access at "open alpha" launch. -

I guess the ends do not justify the means for me. I'd rather them just treat everyone with relative equality than open the floodgates for prioritization of certain personalities. Which they have already done (see the forum members who are testing SA) but it's always been limited and controlled (by both the NDA and the fact that the forum testers do not appear to have ulterior motives). That and I'd rather the community offer relatively unfiltered feedback, rather than just defaulting to the opinions of popular streamers which happens MUCH more often than people think. This way, the developers can get honest feedback from a relatively pure community conception of SA rather than folks entering SA with the issues raised by streamers in the back of their minds looking to confirm every flaw they've seen on the streams. The problems still get recognized, but without an added layer of slander that is so common to the smug "Yep, see Frankie was right, this is wrong... Devs, WTF?" Like you say, we'll all get to test it sooner or later. And it's somewhat insignificant, but I want folks to experience DayZ SA for themselves rather than vicariously through others. That doesn't really have to do with the current situation, and is more of my personal grievance with streaming than anything else. -

I don't care, to the slightest degree. Prioritizing people based upon their "contributions" to the mod never made sense to me. Recognize it, sure. But recognize that everyone contributes to the mod/SA by playing/discussing it. It's an issue of message versus messenger. I couldn't care less about the messenger. Not to mention that Youtubers/Streamers benefit themselves in popularizing the mod, it's not as if they're motivated purely by interest in the game. They're beholden to popularity, others are not. Others are simply here because they're passionate about the mod, and that's as far as their investment goes. I never understood the worship of streamers or Youtubers. They're frequently off-point, narcissistic, and childish even if they "bring people in". See RhinoCrunch for that one. -

Yeah, I don't like the idea of special treatment or hero-worship of streamers/Youtubers. No thank you. We all contribute. -

I will relish in the silence of folks who care about/masturbate to release dates after release when such things no longer matter... at all. -

If you mean this... www.arma2.com/arma-2/arma-2-chernarus/ Then no, it doesn't, especially with regard to DayZ. It's a brief fictional background of fictional Chernarus. -

Obsolete might not be the right term. No longer the norm, sure. Either way, that doesn't excuse a forum being almost wholly neglected by the developers (who were previously highly active on the forum). My point is that the medium doesn't matter, the community does. This is where I disagree with Rocket with regards to his interaction, which I feel has been stellar regardless. Simply because one prefers a mode of communication, doesn't give one license to just ignore the rest. I can appreciate that he may not have time right now to dive through the forums, and that other (less wholesome in my opinion) outlets are preferable to getting information across. But sooner or later, Rocket should make an effort to treat each sector of the community equally (when time provides for it). I've seen much more honed and reasonable discussions here on the forums than I've ever seen on Reddit. One would assume that would be more helpful to the developers, even if it takes them longer to parse through everything. That and I don't think Reddit and traditional "forums" are all that different from one another. Reddit is merely an aggregate form of a forum. You click on a Reddit original post, and it opens up a thread. The feed may be unified, but the interface is nearly identical. -

I think you read a logical fallacy into what I said. I was saying that, by virtue of DayZ being set in a FICTIONAL land (Chernarus) and a FICTIONAL circumstance (Zombie Apocalypse) that "realism" doesn't apply to whether or not an item "should" be there or not. The developers have complete creative license, and whatever they choose to include shouldn't be judged upon whether or not it's "realistic" or not. If you want to make the "believable"/"plausible"/"ridiculous" argument with some hypothetical/analytical reasoning behind it, then go ahead. But "realism" doesn't factor in with this one. Who's to say that NATO (or whatever fictional analog) didn't have a role in containing the outbreak (They clearly did, see crashed UH-1Y's in the mod and US marked clothing in SA)? Who's to say that Chernarussians have no interest in masks? Or clown masks? Or clown masks from a video game? I'd submit that it is you who is grasping at straws, by applying your own definition of "realism" onto a game that is profoundly not concerned with complete and utter realism. I hate "realism" as a term when applied to video games, it's insanely vague. -

I'd rather be proud, unheard, and be surrounded by a few lovable loose nuts than miserable and surrounded by the dregs of humanity. :D And that sounds like Rocket needs to stop by more often rather than wasting time answering (previously banned) trolls on Reddit... -

In fairness, it's a Mauser 98 (Gewehr). Not a Kar98K. Excuse my use of colloquialisms. -

@Shadow134 It's not. Compare the muzzles of a Mosin and Mauser. Reference model was probably a Czech VZ-24 Mauser. -

I have no idea what happened to it, as we've not seen it in a while, but they had a revised AK-74M for DayZ SA. No idea where it went, but it was shown off before the AR-15. That said, I don't think any of these items are "unrealistic" for DayZ either. EDIT - Got me thinking... Is there a thread anywhere compiling all of the weapons we've seen/heard that will be in SA? Just dug up an old screen with a Kar98 in it. -

It's happening in Chernarus, a fictional country with fictional circumstances placed upon it. If an AR-15 can be found in Chernarus, so can a clown mask regardless of whether it's inspired by a pre-existing title. /argument -

I have become doubtful of their execution of "fast zombies", but I'd much rather have them than shamblers regardless of the quality. I have no patience for Romero zombies. To me, it's just a wholly outdated depiction. It's like having the traditional "Count Dracula" in Twilight (which I hate). That said, I'd support some shamblers, as variety would be great and it could be explained pseudo-scientifically. But sprinters all the way.

I guess I'll whip out my old adage. Critique>Constructive Criticism>Illustrating Flaw>Griping>Whining>Bitching. One can be critical about something without fully problematizing it. People lack subtlety.
