Over 2200 people online on ARMA2 cheat forums
Mercator replied to zogin's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
If the server log is anything like the rpt log, those 250 results might actually be duplicate messages and be one person. It is kind of hard to believe that for a five minute period, just about every second a player dis/connects using a female skin and an Enfield on whatever server. If this was the case, I guarantee you the game would be temporarily unplayable due to desync and I didn't see any indication of that in the clip. It's still sad though... -
Zombies are back in charge - good job
Mercator replied to grrinc's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Those two things are closely related. The reason why you would only spawn them, when players are in the vicinity, is that each and every one of those zombies effects server performance. Go in the editor and place 500-1000 AI's in Chernogorsk, give each of them a few waypoints and run a few scripts...and see how your computer handles that. Again...this is the difference between Arma and other games. I know if you've not made any missions and/or scripts for Arma before, it might seem strange, but it's definately a balancing act. -

I would suggest that for now...just learn to work around the bugs and glitches. A lot people have done that for years! They have been around In Arma for a long time, don't expect a free mod still in it's alpha state, to completely work over the base game. Give it some time...and in the meanwhile let the people that work on the mod, do what they can with what they currently have. -
how may arma copys was sold bedfor dayZ?
Mercator replied to sveinungchr@gmail.com's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
A tad bit more than that I would think. Also keep in mind that Arma is still sort of an offshoot from the main product VBS (http://products.bisimulations.com/). A license for that is a lot more expensive than Arma. But no doubt...DayZ has made BIS a lot of money! -
This! No reason whatsoever to engage targets more than 400m away with either weapon or any other with an ironsight (except LMG/GPMG) other than laying down supressive fire, and up to 400m the FAL beats the AKM all day because of it's superior sights and harder hitting round. AKM beats the FAL in full auto though...in game the same as in real life, the FAL is notoriously hard to control on full auto, nigh impossible... This guy for instance... But then again...this guy knows his stuff:D http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8z1q8GiSIdc

After being crushed while repairing a vehicle, I'm done.

People who have been playing Arma itself, the original game, for a good while, have known about these things for a long time and have learned/adapted to avoid them. It's very well possible those issues are annoying as hell, but experienced Arma players aren't bothered by them anymore...they just work around them. That being said, I've only had one accident like that in DayZ, when I tried to crawl out of one of those little sheds in the back of a yard and broke my leg in doing so...goes without saying I won't make that same mistake twice, I'll move to crouch position..walk out..and hit the deck again...simple! Most other issues such as falling off ladders, deerstands, dying because of opening gates, etc... simply don't happen to me anymore. Why? Because I'm carefull in doing those things I suppose, learned all that the hard way by playing the Arma series for over 7 years I guess. The thing is, there is an incredible amount of freedom in this game, both from the player's perspective...and that of the mission maker/scripter/modder. But with that freedom and large scale of the game, there are also limitations to what you can do in the game and with the engine. Have people who are new to Arma ever considered the sheer size of the map and the number of objects on it? Couple that with the fact that your avatar ingame is an actual simulated entity with "real" arms, legs and a torso... It is NOT...and this is important!!!...a floating point in space with a hitbox around it! Every single bullet fired, movement made by player and AI, every explosion, sound...just about everything that happens on a 225 square km map is simulated/calculated/processed by the game. I suspect a lot of players drawn in by DayZ aren't really aware of what the difference is between Arma and other games, and I can't fault them for that by the way. It used to be a niche game (for lack of a better term, sry) with a small but dedicated community playing it. A certain kind of player you could say...maybe the one that also prefers DCS A10/Blackshark over HAWX? Or likes to dabble in other simulators, be they flightsims, Formula 1 or even Bus driving in Berlin:-)? And all of a sudden Arma becomes "mainstream"...and tension develops between experienced players and the huge influx of people new to the engine, game, map, amount of controls or even the difficulty of the game/"simulator". What I think is important, is people need to realise they need to adjust. Hardcore players need to drop the elitist attitude and new people need to realise/learn what the base game (Arma) is and what it can and cannot do. What forums can do without, is people insulting others for no particular reason, other than achieving a distorted sense of accomplishment over finding the most derogative way possible of disagreeing with someone's post! Particularly that fella with the Bruce Willis quote as his name needs to tone it down a bit. Peace. -
I logged in all the way in the northeast of Krasnostav, a few hundred meters north of Black Lake on the US79 server. This is NOT inside a building, town, middle of a field, deerstand or airfield...but in a dense and remote forest! Your char enters the world a few seconds before you actually control it (important!). Before I can even center my trackir, some guy opens up on me with an M240 from maybe 25m away... I'm hit, drop to the ground, bleeding and leg broke (luckily the dude couldn't hit a barndoor if he wanted to), and managed to switch the chat channel to direct and shout a few angry words at the guy. A second after I did, the game crashed with the message "Session lost!". So...I survived without disconnecting, but would people really hold it against me if I disconnected in that situation? These topics are grey areas, not black and white as some people would make it out to be...they rarely are...

THIS GAME IS IMPOSSIBLE FOR NOOBS
Mercator replied to JERRY220's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Been reading a lot of stuff about "learning the map" in this thread...I hope people don't mean it as how they learn smaller maps by heart in other games. A better approach would be to learn how to "read the map". Learn how to find north without a compass, find your bearings by looking at how roads intersect and their proximity and angle to buildings, read elevations, etc... In fact...Chernarus is big and divers enough, to be used as a primer for real life navigational skills for people without knowledge of it. -
Only advice I'd give, is move through the map as if you have a crosshair at the back of your head at all times. And trust people at your own peril, unless they are actual friends or clanmates or something. If all you want to do is survive, then scope areas out before entering them, listening for gunshots, overly excited zed's, etc...and haul ass or simply wait longer if things seem fishy. You might even want to avoid busy areas such as large cities and the airfields.
