  1. We're much like carnivores in nature - Our killing thins the herd and benefits those who manage to survive, causing them to thrive on the loot while those left behind run from Kemanka. :) You should be thanking us for that AK and GPS you found in the firehouse in Electro amoungst the 5 other dead bodies.
  2. I think your misunderstanding what he's saying. He's saying that he is capable of killing you, but isn't - therefore if he tells you to drop your gun and you don't do it he WILL kill you, but if you do as you're demanded you walk away. I think that is a pretty 'fair chance' since he is giving you a 50/50 option of either doing what he tells you and living or trying to kill him and take the chance of dying. How is that not fair?
  3. Go take a long walk into the ghetto at midnight on a weekend and see how broken your primitive instincts are. Yes, humans haven't had an apex predator hunting them for a long time, but that doesn't mean we've lost our instinct. The fight or flight mechanic is the most basic of all of our primitive instincts and you feel it to some degree every single day of your life. No offense intended as this is purely a subjective view but I think a lot of people who think the way that you are... are the kind of people who spend most of their days sitting at a deskjob, or lead a very timid life that involves a lot of couch and internet surfing. If you spoke to a cop, or a firefighter they will tell you the fear to avoid danger is still very real, and very strong. I realize that it's just a game and nothing will physically hurt you but in all honesty the best possible way that you can enjoy any kind of 'third person' experience is by projecting yourself into the experience, whether it be a book, a video game, a TV show or a story someone is telling you. If you take yourself out of it most all of what (I think) makes DayZ so much fun is lost, simply because you cease to truly care about anything. You get yourself stuck in an endless cycling of 'It's just a game, who cares' and it sucks the fun right out of it. There is a very good reason why Rocket built this game with such a strong psychological intent.. because it makes people behave in rational, real ways as oppose to arcade style shooters like COD. Regardless of how many people call this game a deathmatch there is still an innate FEAR about losing your character, and losing your gear.. and that is (very basically) what makes DayZ so much damn fun.
  4. We're animals. Regardless of how intelligent and cunning we are as a species we are still animals, and many of our instincts and 'gut feelings' come from the most primitive parts of our brain. If there is a real (gun) or percieved (suspicion) feeling of danger you will not approach it. Hate to break it to you but unless you're Pocahontas or Snow White you will never walk into a forest and have all the animals come running to you in complete trust of your 'good' nature. It's not a 'broken mindset of humans' it's the mindset of every living thing on this planet and is the only reason we are around as a species today. There is nothing broken about it, and the only thing broken is your opinion. No offence.
  5. This is unbelievably illogical. Sure if you play on the same server for your entire DayZ career and you never have any new players joining your servers, then this logic is valid - but if you're like the majority of DayZ players you will be going from server to server so noone will ever really know your temperment. It's like saying "I'm a nice guy" and expecting everybody who has never met you to predetermine you're a nice guy. The OP is right, people can't be trusted... if you're experienced. It's in our psychology to fear danger and that is exactly what an unknown player with a GUN is, danger. You have a major malfunction in your common sense and survival instinct if you aren't immediately cautious of someone wielding a weapon that can kill you. That being said, how far you are willing to go to test this 'trust' is player bias but at the end of the day the saying "Fool me once, same on you. Fool me twice, shame on me" applies drastically on how we approach a player once we've been playing for a long time.

    DayZ Standalone Discussion

It's a technology test. That's what it is, thats what Rocket called it, thats what Matt called it. Alpha, or 'foundation' release comes after.
  7. Seems as though a lot of your concerns are directed towards private hives. While admin abuse will always be around, I believe in one recent interview they had said that the controls put out by administrators would be much more constricted than they are now. The standalone will be forcing servers to whitelist on the public hive, which will not only keep servers in check in terms of custom (if even possible) settings but also for a quality standard. I agree that server stability is a big issue back when everyone was on the public hive but there have been many server architecture changes that have been made to streamline and optimize so it shouldn't be as severe as what we once experienced back in may, june and july. That being said however I don't think we should expect complete stability as this is still going to be considered an 'alpha' build, with many changing variables and as Matt Lightfoot said "The foundation build (alpha) will be consistantly evolving and we will continue to add and change features while trying to keep it stable." When we're dealing with the way DayZ currently is, and will be for the next year it's a rational expectation to see instability in the standpoint regarding private hives but I don't think it will be a concern until much, much later in development simply because the public hive forces servers to play by Rockets rules, the way that he wants the game to be played and I feel that is detrimental to the project.

I need some help with framerates

Can you describe your problem? Like.. when does it happen? how often, how long, how low, normal FPS, what server, current GPU drivers?

    Why do Clans train?

    That was in poor taste...

Can you post proof of the answers from your conversation? Not to question your information but people would be putting a lot on the line posting videos and streaming just to find out you can't do it =(
  12. My opinion about clans is this: The servers (for the most part) are too small to support a decently large clan and pubbies as well, so they tend to dominate everything around them because their numbers make up 1/3rd or 1/2 of the entire server. In the future I hope to see much larger server compacities, which will not only allow clans (for the most part) to be outnumbered by the general population 20-30 clans vs 70 or 120 random people but also allow for more clans to be built on a specific server, that way they have direct clan vs clan attacks to worry about. .. but as it stands right now I can see the dilemma, since most private hives only sit at 40 or 50 player caps, which is tiny for the amount of area Chernarus provides.

    Why do Clans train?

Well, DayZ is different because teamwork makes no difference because you're playing in a giant open area where shots could be coming from everything. Shooters like CS need to train their 5 man teams to work together with timings and strategies because you're playing against a set amount of people on a time limit in a limited arena. But I see where you're coming from.

    Bonfire, buying bases and 'rules'

Their server, their rules. If you don't like it there are hundreds of other servers that are played on very actively that you can play on, and if that is not good enough it shouldn't be much longer (relatively) until SA.
  15. Rocket said that there would be about 1000 people, priority to Mods, admins and the like. Sorry I can't source it, but that is what he said. So you can imagine that pretty much every mod on these forums has access to it.

^ That's why people need to stop calling it an alpha, and start calling it what it is... a tech test. Just seeing if things can run. Alpha means the game is instable but the lead purpose is to add features and change functions. This is simply to see if the game is stable enough and functional enough to BE an alpha. It's what we'd call pre-alpha work. That being said though, As Ovation said if all goes well we should be seeing SA alpha next month for sure.

    Looking for server

TheLaughingMan's private hive has consistantly 35+ people, extremely low ping and the only thing it starts you with is a compass, map, watch, and an extra bandage and beans. no weapons. Only downside (if you don't like that kind of stuff) is it has quadruple the amount of vehicles.
  18. I'm pretty sure Steam has handled certain situations like this before, where there was only a limited amount of keys released. Basically goes live, people buy it and then when they run out of keys they still allow purchases and reserve keys as they come in to those who've already purchased.. all the while labelling the game (where you would normally see the preorder timer) saying that they are out of keys and blah blah.

    Personal Hygiene

Have you ever smelled a rotting corpse? BO and bad breath doesn't exactly take priority when that smell is in just about every place you go. How about some Vicks instead?

    DayZ Standalone Discussion

Rocket has said probably a hundred times now that he intends on keeping the player threat as the main aggressor of DayZ, and that will not change. They may streamline the zombies and make them more of a threat but the position still stands that the players will be the main threat.

    DayZ Standalone streaming topic

Where did you read they are allowed to stream? Last I read Rocket said they would be signing an NDA ... which would be completely broken if they streamed, released screenshots or videos.

Would DayZ exist without The Walking Dead?

BUT THEN THE HIPSTERS WOULD WIN. YOU CAN'T LET THEM WIN.

Would DayZ exist without The Walking Dead?

Zombie apocalpse and survival has been around long before the walking dead. Infact even the comic book is considered late in the zombie scene, only coming out in 2003.

Although the idea is nice, how would one become a 'medic'? If it's just a playstyle than both helpful players and medics would both be using the hero skin, so what seperates them? Not to mention if they added some kind of a medical 'humanity' to the game then there is a large chance that heroes would earn the medic skin as well. I think there are too many variables to add a skin like that. Not to mention just because you're out to do good things doesn't mean the people shooting at you are. I don't think it would change much.

    Arma 3 a new DayZ?

I thought Rocket said that because the Arma 2 engine is so polished he would be using it for now but once Arma 3's engine is good years from now he will make the engine change.
