I haven't had much spare time to compose anything new (probably been playing too much DayZ), so just bumping this to see if there is genuine interest in more. Feedback, or even ideas for more welcome. :)

This thread lied to me...It said simple solution, then it went on to expect me to read a freaking essay... Simple = short, clear and concise
-
The problem is simple... No consistency with the version of the game and beta patch servers are running. Servers advertising the wrong version. A lot of servers advertise times that are not true, so you go in expecting daylight and it is night time The majority of servers I join are bugged and I need disconnect to find another that isn't. On a lot of servers I join still get stuck on the 'loading' screen. _______________________________________________ So, yeah...If all of those things were fixed, maybe a timer would be of some benefit, but currently it would just make finding a working server even more difficult and time consuming.

Should servers be able to choose the time of day?
soapmak3r replied to soapmak3r's topic in DayZ Mod Suggestions
My point is that it is a waste of perfectly good, low latency servers. There are plenty of servers, most are just going to waste in the evenings though. -
Should servers be able to choose the time of day?
soapmak3r replied to soapmak3r's topic in DayZ Mod Suggestions
If server owners can choose the time of day, then server owners/admins need to sort their sh*t out, because the vast majority of the servers based in the UK/Europe are set to be night time and are empty when they could, and should be full. Server admins in general need to sort their sh*t out. There are so many servers running so many different versions of the game and different ArmA2 beta patches that it is making finding a working server with a decent ping an absolute clusterf**k. It's got f**k all to do with being a coward, it has everything to do with zero visibility unless you have NVG. If you have them, then I'm sure night servers are a lot of fun and as they are empty, I am sure looting is pretty much risk free and easy. You could reasonably argue that the people with NVG, playing on empty night servers are the cowards because they don't want the competition of other players. ;) -

Yeah, I guess people are just cueing up for all those empty low latency night servers... -
Should servers be able to choose the time of day?
soapmak3r replied to soapmak3r's topic in DayZ Mod Suggestions
Yeah, I've noticed that...Like one or two. I wasn't sure what the deal is with that though. How would it? People would be free to host and play on night servers if they wanted to. The only drawback would be that people playing in the evening/night would have better pings...So no drawback at all. If I was going to rent a server, it would be a US server...because I only play in the evenings...That's backward assed thinking. -
If people want to google spawn locations for stuff, that's their thing. For myself, I'd rather have the pleasure of exploring the game world and seeing what it has to offer. I can pretty much guarantee that I will be playing and enjoying the game longer than those people, who will get bored and move on to the next band wagon they can jump on to. It's a bit like watching a TV series that revolves around suspense and mystery, but going online and reading every single spoiler that you can...It doesn't give you an advantage, it just takes the majority of the fun out of the experience.

The more realistic the survival element in the game, the better as far as I am concerned. It's at that kind of point that the game crosses a line and becomes an educational tool, with practical real world benefits in some respect. At the moment, I wonder how many people have learnt to properly map read or even read a compass from playing DayZ.
-
I also think that we should be able to go a lot longer without food in general. At the moment, we start to starve to death in a very short period of time, like a couple of hours after eating something... I totally get why we need to drink a lot, because we are doing a lot of travelling...But personally, I can spend all day up a mountain hiking, and not eat a thing till I get home in the evening. At most I would have some kind of chocolate bar to keep my energy up... I don't think the benefits of eating last anywhere near long enough.

Thank you! The plan I have in mind is to have as many phrases and variations of phrases as possible so that it would stay fresh. I think variety is key. I've been busy the last few days, but I plan to get to work on some 'psycho run' phrases this weekend. These are basically going to be "Sh*t!! There are a ton of zombies chasing me!" phrases... heheh There should be a load more melancholic, reflective phrases in the works too, to help fill out the journeys. They are really enjoyable to make. Some more military sounding tracks with brass and snares could be cool too. Cheers again for the feedback :)

Thanks for the feedback. It's encouraging and is appreciated. :)

Haha Rocket...I love how you have somehow managed to bring the paranoia and fear from the game into the real world with the updating process... :P
-
With that ARMA 2 beta patch, I am getting 'Wrong CD Key' when I extract it...but it goes on to let me install anyway....Is it still safe for me to install it?

If ammo clips and items like bandages stacked, we wouldn't need as much space...Currently, with the base backpack/inventory slots, you need to have the space for primary weapon ammo, and usually need the backpack for secondary weapon ammo/bandages etc. The inventory system is fine as it is. People already have to pick and choose the loot that they take. I do anyway. If anything, I would argue that the inventory should be made larger, with many more slots, and the size of things should be made more relative.

PSA: Do not wear alternative clothing in 1.7.2.0!
soapmak3r replied to Legacy (DayZ)'s topic in Mod Announcements & Info
I wish I had read this thread about 10 minutes ago...haha :( I just found 'camo' and put it on...It sucks so badly...Teleported to water for a moment, then back...lost everything. This update has broken way more than it has fixed. Since I lost all my weapons, I play for a bit, lose connection, disconnect, then reconnect and it puts me back to where I was just after I lost all of my equipment... Of course, it couldn't put me back to where I was just BEFORE I lost all of my equipment...That would have been too convenient... This thread should be stickied. -
So, I was just in a server, near Starry Soba. I was going around looking for a chopper crash and in one of the forests near there I found a fully working VW Camper wagon, with some ok supplies and a jerry cans. It was the first vehicle I had come across in game...So, obviously I stole it... :D I drove around for a bit and hid it in a forest to go and loot a town when all of a sudden, the screen warped, and everyone in the server appeared in a straight line, unable to move... and it seemed like the guy at the end of the line was just shooting everyone in front of him... I'm just wondering, did an angry server admin do this because I found their (not very well hidden) vehicle and took it? I think that I managed to leave the server before I was killed...I really have no idea. I caught it all on video though, so I'll upload that in a bit and update the thread. I'm pretty sure quite a few people got killed before I was able to disconnect from the server. I got the feeling it was an admin killing everyone randomly because there was no one in the vehicle any more and he didn't know who took it. I 'saved' the vehicle before I left it in the forest, does that mean it goes with me when I disconnect? If I am still alive, join another server, and go back there? Is it possible for server owners to do stuff like this? Are there any plans to introduce counter measures for stuff like this? It's kind of game breaking if admins that are butthurt can just start murdering everyone on the server.
-
Hmmm...Maybe the person who had the vehicle before me was a hacker? I felt like Hurley from LOST driving around in my VW Wagon! :D
-
Really glad you like them! Cheers! I would contact Rocket or a member of the team, but I have no idea what I would say at this point. I'll keep making and posting more and see how things evolve. :)

Hatchets as a secondary weapon (pistol slot)
soapmak3r replied to Ozast's topic in DayZ Mod Suggestions
I think that we should be able to shoulder our primary weapon and use the hatchet when needed. -
Need Medical Assistance? We can help.
soapmak3r replied to Dr Wasteland MD's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
I am in dire need of help...2500 blood and passing out a lot...stumbling about half blind in a forest... I'm just outside Mogilevka if anyone can help. My steam id is SOAPMAK3R Heading online now. I have bloodbags, and some other gear I can donate to the cause fi someone can help me out. :D -
Cheers for the feedback, it's all good! I know where you are coming from. I didn't want to have it seem too scripted I guess, so I just put the music over the gameplay footage very roughly. It seemed to generally fit well with the action (or lack of) quite well though, I felt. I think it could work if it was situational though. Like a variant of 'paranoia' could play when you hear gunshots, or 'creeping death' when you start to aggro a zed for example. I'm gonna start work next on a proper theme for when you aggro zeds and have to run for it, or make a stand. Then do some variations on that and see how they work with gameplay footage. I'll maybe re-add 'On the run' to that footage. Cheers again for all the positive feedback! It's good encouragement. Composing for video-games is something I'd love to get into properly. :)
-
Yet again I will reiterate because everyone seems to be trying to come up with needlessly complex or punishing solutions to very simple problems... Just make loot spawn more evenly around the coast where people spawn, so no matter where you spawn, you have an equal footing. That would eliminate any reason to respawn.
-
So those 10 or so posters represent the almost half a million people playing the mod? Also, that isn't a survey. That's a very small number of people sharing their preference. For myself, if the music is quiet enough, I find it really adds to the experience and tension and more reflective meloncolic songs for long cross country journeys, would make them much more interesting. Cheers for the positive feedback! If this thread or the videos can get the attention of the mod development team, maybe they would add it in. It'd be fantastic if that happened. :)

DayZ 1.7.2 Stuck on Loading Screen..
soapmak3r replied to [email protected]'s topic in DayZ Mod Troubleshooting
Yeah, that patch. But afterwards, I had to verify Steam game cache, it redownloaded a coulple of files...Then I had to go through the initial procedures to get DayZ working...Run arma 2 once, run combined operations once...Then reinstall the DayZ beta, and replace the arma2co.exe with the beta one... then it worked... They certainly aren't making anything easy for us. OB1, we are going to have to wait for basically ever server to update. At the moment it seems like nearly every server is running the wrong version, or the right version, but without the hotfix...It's a nightmare, but we just need to be patient and wait for everyone to sort their sh*t out.
