The Psychology of Understanding Alpha
grimsonfart replied to Weyland Yutani (DayZ)'s topic in General Discussion
Well let's just say this; broken promises (this is not a development of the mod, this is something completely revamped), slow development (because they want to add so much on an engine barely able to stand on it's own feet), constant delays, a lot of fundamental issues still not fixed after over 2 years of development (performance, zombies (?), lag, hackers to some extent). The mod (and it's mods) has for some reason much more content than SA even though it's being developed by professionals (yeah sure, quality is better but then quantity suffers). Lots of bugs is just the surface and since this is EA it's nothing to complain about, the rest however is worthy of critique... Sure will be a fine game when it gets released, but let's not get ahead of ourselves and stick to right now (SA has kind of turned me into a hater sadly since i played a bit too much of the mod and expected a bit too much out of this but trying to keep this as honest as possible) -
I don't get the RTX video, they are talkingabout Q1, Q2, Q3 etc, then they say release is estimated around mid-2k16. If so they are very late on their goals in the video unless they are talking about 2k16 goals...

In my case it's not for sure. I have a bit too many hours in the mod and there is not enough change in SA to keep me entertained. I haven't bothered devoting time to it because it seems you have to really dive into it to see the changes, so if you just want to play it casually i wouldn't say it's worth it.

Difference between standalone and mod?
grimsonfart replied to hansanitizer's topic in General Discussion
If you want more hardcore expirience, go with SA. If you want to have fun, play the mod on a custom server. -
This. The 2012 release date tells me it was in development for at least 3-4 months before that date, otherwise what were they going to release with 4 months of development time? Look at the development speed now, plus they were far far less developers back then.... I'm calling easily 3 years in development.

It's very clunky and extremely buggy. It does not play smoothly which i would like in a game that often requires quick reactions, also it kills the immersion. It can take ages to do anything in your inventory because sometimes things are so laggy. Picking up things in a hurry and not knowing if you picked it up because it takes so long for it to disappear. Don't even get me started on the performance... Development seems very slow and usually doesn't bring much when they finally update. Also, when are there going to be bigger servers? 40 players on a map this size isn't really a lot.

After probably around 4-500 (probably double that in total) hours in Chernarus alone i play for like 15 minutes and i'm done. I have seen pretty much every building, looted every spot, been on the entire map. There isn't anything noteworthy that keeps me playing SA. Oh if i wish they would have scrapped Chernarus for SA, or at least make custom maps available like in the mod cause i can't stand it anymore!! I kind of envy you guys that can keep yourselves entertained, because i remember back in the days when i started playing the mod in it's very early stages i had an absolute blast. I was paranoid, my heart was beating and i played non stop until i went to bed. Those were the dayz... I doubt i will ever get that back :(
-
I get that, i'm just disappointed they haven't done anything about it yet after all this time that's all. Been waiting patiently for a long time to see this problem in the spotlight, even though it's one of the major flaws and has always been since the release of the mod it always gets ignored because "It's an alpha" hurr durr, let's just ignore it until all our hats and jackets are implemented.
-
Every possible really. scene_complexity, GPU_MaxFrames and loads others inside the .cfg a profile startup parameters were useless and have never made any difference for me. I have been playing since the mod back in may 2012, so i have pretty much done every possible tweak as well as browsed countless of articles.

5820k, 980Ti, fresh install of Windows 8.1 and runs like crap. Old setup with 3770k and 670 ran it better. I guess i'm just unlucky, as it wouldn't be first time very high-end system gets stomped. And i completely agree, performance is not nr.1 priority, but by now i would have expected something, not nothing compared to the mod. And keeping the dirty work for last eh? I will be fun cleaning up everything in the end they said.... it will be easy they said.... (by the way, i do have game development insight, but only artist side not programmer. I know for a fact that cleaning up a scene afterwards is an absolutely ridiculous task).
-
Well, no, since you can drive your car without the painting, but if your engine keeps stalling it's a different story. And i don't really care about people saying it's in ALPHA or BETA, performance and playability is FUNDIMENTAL, it has been ignored ever since the start of development, which is like 2 years now? Ask people, make a poll and see what they will complain about the most. Any decent gamer should react to this in a negative way unless you are lucky or just plain don't give a crap about performance (in which case good for you, keep on enjoying this game). I'm talking strictly about performance and not the rest of the game which can progress in whatever speed it needs to. I think it's a great game but for me nearly unplayable and not a very enjoyable experience anymore.
-
I understand people are getting sick of seeing it, but since it doesn't get fixed it's still a valid complaint.
-
Ah, the good old "age" criticism, just because i'm not 40 years old with 20 years of gaming behind my back doesn't mean i don't have a valid reason to complain. "it's done when it's done", duh i'm so impatient, i'm coming back in another 2 years to see if they fixed anything, no fingers crossed this time.

*my history

This didn't do anything on my 980Ti and 5820k at 4.6ghz. Game still runs like complete ass (40-80 woods and 20-30 in cities). Worst optimization i have ever seen in history after PC gaming for 8 years.
-
Yeah, haha, forum post of the year... 5820k (4.6ghz), 980Ti, 16GB DDR4 = about 20-30FPS in towns, 40-80 outside (with a lot of the popular tweaks). Screw this, if my friends i5 and 970 can get 40-50 in towns..... i give up, since the mod i have been pondering upon what makes this game run good on some systems and horrible on some higher end systems. I was hoping that over 3 years after it's original release (yes i'm including mod/SA) something would have been done about it, even if it would have been the smallest most insignificant thing.... I remember running the mod on my i7 3770k and 670 getting better performance than i am now. I don't care what excuses are being made, you have one hell of a mess to clean up. GOOD LUCK!

For me the biggest drawback with SA is that it takes place in the same area as the mod. I have played hundreds upon hundreds of hours, looted, seen, been to almost every place so many times it isn't interesting anymore, the entire point of exploration is completely gone. It doesn't matter if they added a couple of new villages or buildings, it's still the exact same place, with the exact same look, with 95% of the same features. I don't get how people are so obsessed with this map unless you didn't play the mod and jumped straight on SA. This bundled with it's performance is a -1 from me.
-
That should have been a priority during the entire development process. I don't know why they thought they could keep on using a engine that has caused to much issues over it's lifespan. Poor decision making and managment is the biggest reasons for it's current state. As soon as DayZ SA was released, and after playing it for a bit i knew it had potential, it would just take a lot longer than initially hoped for.
-
It still looks, feels and plays as the same old map. Just because they added some new villages and buildings doesn't help the fact that i have now played this exact map, gone the the exact same places, looted the exact same buildings probably 1000 times by now (i have played the mod since around may 2012 so i know this map as my own pocket). For me it's a dealbreaker getting a "new" game with only it's core mechanics changed. You must really, really love this game to put up with this in my opinion. I think it was a big mistake not to start fresh (core mechanics can stay). I have serious doubt i will live to see this game running at it's full potential. As the guy above me stated, it has been in development so long compared to other titles that already seem to have as much content as well as far less issues. There is no doubt that development has been close to a disaster.

I just took a trip to Elektra and got around 30-40FPS. Kind of sad seing people getting better FPS on much weaker rigs. What expectations should we hope for performance gains when the new renderer hits? Can i hope for 50%?
-
You are right, i just tested out Ark and it runs much better, still not very good though. I dont know how many people are currently developing SA, but i got concerned when i heard they were continiuing to develop SA in chernarus, using the same engine etc... I think my concern is justified. I probably have around 1000 hours in the mod and was hoping for something fresh, not the same old map with some new villages etc. I wonder what they could have been able to achieve with a different engine, say CryEngine (i have used this engine for the past two years). It would look much, much better and run much better. A question to the developers, are you planning on replacing the vegetation assets at any point? They are really showing their age and should be something not "too" hard to do, plus it would improve the games looks a lot.
-
Since you guys tend to break as much as you fixed i can see where that comes from. Though i really don't see the point in completely ignoring it, there are lots of small things that can probably be done to help it. I hope to see the new renderer soon...
-
Tried maximum obviously, did not do much difference. Probably dropped the frames a bit more than on minimum but thats about it. I get around 17-18fps looking into cherno on maximum, while about 30 as i said on minimum.
-
Just tested this game out again after 6 months of not playing it. Also got my new 980Ti so i wanted to see how or if it did any better than my previous 980... nooooope. In fact, it runs worse than on my old 670. With modified configuration files along with most settings set to minimum i can barely get 30FPS in towns and around 50-60 in the woods. This is with the card OC to 1500mhz (core) and a i7 5820k at 4.5Ghz... While not as bad as Ark, it's still a disaster. In the end i don't care that the developers say "optimizations will come later", the new renderer (which is coming.. when? I have seen it being delayed so many times it feels like standalone release dates all over again) better give it a significant increase as it's the only thing i'm interested in, along with a lot of other people.... If not, oh well, wait another 6 months and see what has happened. PS; sorry for my negative attitude, it's just that i want this game to be great, but everytime i try it out again hoping for change i get dissapointed.

Okay, so is this game worth "trying" to play again?
grimsonfart posted a topic in General Discussion
Title says most of it. Been staying away from the Standalone ever since slightly after release (i don't think i need to tell you why)...
