In real life, you do not have a gun. BUT! In real life one can also use a knife, axe, pick up a stick etc... In a game where the only form of defence is a firearm, starting without one is a bit silly. Its like controlling a guy with no arms in an apocalypse...

wait, you want them on? damn... I hate scanning the treeline with my gun only to suddenly have the game yell at me that there is a guy 300m away and even what his name is... Its one hell of an immersion breaker and makes for silly long distance firefights. One should really be able to tell if they are on or not before joining a server. So both of us can get what we want :)

There is a fantastic 2-CD compilation by Mark Morgan called "Vault Archives" Mark is the composer for Fallout 1 and 2. And also the upcoming Wasteland 2. The entire set is just great and I suggest listening to it all. Here is a taste: -
We all understand that its not BF3. Just that the gameplay would not suffer if the server could handle 100 players. The map is fantastic and able to handle more players without it becoming crowded. But since Arma 2 is not able to handle more players the discussion is pointless.

Arma is awesome and the map is indeed perfect. BUT! Due to the 50 player cap, this is not large-scale warfare at all. This is not the mod's fault of course, since this is just the way Arma is made. It has its limitations. But for a map like this, 50 players are waaay to low.
