Game not as colorful as other people?

Well.. his game looks awfully saturated, someone has been wiggling sliders randomly in his graphic card control panel?
  2. Well right now we are "forced" to 3rd person, because you would be crazy not to use this advantage to peer over walls, look around corners and clip thru walls, if everyone use an advantage you refuse to use, you are giving yourself a handicap. i liked Dislexy's quote "In first person, gaining visual information is not without risks, If i can see you, you can see me".
  3. Those complaining about mouse "acceleration", your avatar can only turn so fast, the game won't allow you to go past that speed no matter how fast you flick your mouse.
  4. I think a good part of this is that it's in everyone's best interest to help to bring everything back in order after a catastrophe. But what if the catastrophe is of such magnitude that there is nothing to "go back to" ? What would then be people's reaction?
  5. Individualism "is" selfishness, you put yourself before the good of the group after all. That is essentially selfish from a collective standpoint, like... what makes "you" more worthy than anyone for instance :) (it's a good debate to have around a nice wine)

    [Suggestion] Server Event's

Fine with me as long as it's random and server hosts cannot influence it.
  7. Heroes are movie material, it IS going to be harder in a more "realistic" situation where you are exposed to real people. Look at Gandhi or other people that marked history by being good samaritans. It's not easy, it doesn't always work, and it's not the best way to live long, free or unharmed.

    Main hive consistency

Yeah but this is not a democracy.

    Main hive consistency

I think all servers should have the same settings, all of them.

Ideas for dayz: SAFE ZONES and ROAMING HORDES

I don't think safezones are planned, if you want a quiet place to trade and frolic, you'll have to earn it.

The RV engine is the worst engine ever made.

Occlusion culling really depend of what you are doing, at certain point the occlusion code becomes slower than not running it if your game has a lot of objects. Most popular method of occlusion by far is the use of a binary space partitioning tree of sorts but this method only really shine for tight urban/interior maps (this method date from the quake days) The unreal engine used to be a mix of bsp and zone portals. The real issue with open landscape like Arma's is that you can't really do any proper culling. Occlusion culling is useful for "not showing objects that are inside or behind a building, but that's not the real problem that arma has, far cry uses autobillboards to cut down on foliage rendering, if any, that's the feature i think would probably gove a performance boost to the RV engine. The most you would get from occlusion culling is removing what's behind hills but it's not as easy to code in as it sounds. Then there is the disk streaming system that gives an "impression" of low fps when it's really cpu/disk related. We used to run arma OA on ramdrives or SSDs to overcome it, there isn't a whole lot that can be done in this regard, i believe they already moved the disk streaming on a separate thread so it wouldn't affect the main game loop so much. There isn't a whole lot else that can be done to improve the map streaming tho, chernarus is a big map with a lot of assets, you can't just stuff it all in ram at once. A very important thing to understand tho, when it comes to graphics, there is almost no difference in performances from one engine to another. There is hardly any "tricks" to render faster in DirectX/OpenGL, there are "bad" practices that might make framerate take a hit but it's more due to improper modeling or assets optimization. There isn't a whole lot that you can do "wrong" in DX/GL. Also has anyone who has a poor framerate thought about moving their draw distance down to , lets say 1km? because that's as far as other games will ever render.

SKS A mix of DMR and M14 ?

Hopefully they will factor in some way that it's too long to be a practical cqb solution.

    DayZ. AMD vs INTEL

I'll go with anyone who does proper OpenGL support, which means, not AMD/ATI.

The M4 sound is very bad, along with the ballistics

Well real gun sounds are deafeningly loud, so we can't really go this loud (i accidentally lifted my ear protection as someone fired an M4 and i couldn't hear a thing for a minute)

Why is the world of dayz so static ?

Because they are not interested in creating "levels" maybe, but places that look real?

Dayz --- My experience (opinion) so far...

The bottom line is that as a programmer you're not gonna pick something that you don't already know how to work with, unless it is completely unfit for your project. It does NOT just boil down to the engine choice, not only is this an insult to every programmers out there but this is like a musician complaining that his instrument isn't good enough for his music. That's beginner modder talk "we need a better engine", since modders rarely get full source code access they are usually bound by whether their engine of choice support this or that feature.

Why is the world of dayz so static ?

Woah, hold on a minute here.
  18. So according to you human ingenuity stopped existing after google came up?
  19. This topic again, i do agree that third person view has to go but the community is divided on this.

Why is the world of dayz so static ?

Define what makes an engine "old" for you. Because , news flash , each version of the unreal engine is built on the previous one. Each version of the quake engine was built on the previous one and so on. There is nothing wrong with updating and refining an existing engine. Nobody in their right mind just scrape years of programming and testing like this. A beginner programmer is still building his toolset and skills and rewrite a lot of his own code. A good programmer write good code. An excellent programmers goes "Have i seen this before?" and doesn't rewrite code that he can just pull out of a previous project.

Why is the world of dayz so static ?

The thing that people seems to overlook in this thread presenting their favourite games is that none of these games present all the features you complain that dayZ doesn't have "at once". give me a game that has: Rigid body physics for vehicles.225km2 terrain.Dynamic structure destruction.Fully physical player movements.Full entity persistence (and i do mean it, GTA V doesn't keep track of everything in the world, only what is directly around players).long view distances suitable for realistic 300m target engagement.realistic firearm beahavior and bullet drop.support for large amounts of players.large amount if npcs at the same time (zombies or other).Every ambitious games out there pick only a few of those "praised" features, none of them implement all of them, due to time constrains, money, manpower but also... the target gaming system they are aiming for. People can whine all they want how consoles hold pc gaming back, PCs do not have unlimited available resources, you run quickly out of ram to store your game, out of video ram to store your textures and models and out of shader units to compute your lighting, shadows, normals and specular effects. But more important, you criticize the solution they took for building destruction as unprofessional or "gimmicky"... dude, wake up, every single game out there exploit every tricks and shortcuts in the book to get things done on the cheap. It's not a question of laziness, it's about choosing what you're doing with your processing power.

DayZ is FailZ (Lacklustre Infected comment)

Zombies in an open world setting are really difficult to make right. Everyone love the Romero-style slow zombies... but they simply do not work in a non "staged (movie) environment. The camera frame in movies provide the closed space impression needed for those zombies to function. If you have guns and can see them before they see you, usually they are pretty trivial to deal with. If you want a good example of "gimmick creature" the game "the thing" had an interesting way to make monsters that where still frightening. The "things" where sensible to bullets but it would merely "weaken" them, you had to incinerate them to destroy them. Incinerating them required to get in close range, you risked to burn yourself, set the building you where in on fire, get the creature to land a hit on you or get infected. Project zomboid goes all the way "in" with this and gives you a 50% chance of letal infection for EVERY bite. Melee weapons are obviously the quiet way to dispatch zombies, but also expose you to that fatal bite, in this game there is no cure for the zombie virus, and it takes a couple days to incubate, you may be already condemned without knowing it. If we had a combination of those two systems we could have extremely dangerous zombies where making them aware of your presence is already a death sentence.
  23. It still wouldn't create an empathic link with the guy you're about to kick out of the game for ever. And in my opinion the "existence" of this empathic link is slightly exagerated. I know that in this situation, IRL, if i had the SLIGHTEST doubt wether this or that guy could become a threat later down the line, i would pull the trigger. You cannot expect everyone to have empathy for a complete stranger. It does exist and it's good that it does, but i don't think it affects everyone.

    Ideas for solving battle logging?

Why making something this convoluted, just make it so you cannot log out instantly in ANY situations. 30 minutes :)
  25. /me sigh. Your post started as something i thought was going to be interesting. But like all the others before you... you don't know anything about this subject.
