If you get surrounded just hit F (I think the key binding is) and you'll do a melee with the rifle to push them back. Then you can pop them off with more rounds. As for getting yourself in that situation, shit happens. I've played hundreds of hours in this game and it still happens. The worst is when you enter a town and the zeds haven't spawned yet. Then they all suddenly spawn at once (it seems they all spawn at the centre and then walk outwards). The times I've been surrounded is where I've killed one with an axe and suddenly there's 10 more within 10m. The whole 'raise rifle' thing is a real PITA. You almost CANNOT shoot well from guard towers because your character will be constantly raising the rifle as you get near the edge. Thats just crap. In a game where you have to hide and potentially shoot from all sorts of weird places, having that animation is just lazy.

What game is that? Anyway I'm a massive fan of Dayz PVE. I play on a number of PVE servers however the one I like the most is Ozbime and thats because its extremely difficult! loot is scarce, there's no stamina/run mods or inventory mods so you have to manage your inv space well. AND they have lots of zeds and everywhere! ie. the zeds are much more difficult to kill and there are lots of them esp in towns and mil bases. Not only that, the server owner also has them spawning in fields - you can imagine my surprise (and I pee'd a little) when running around in the dark with a flare only to bump into 2 of them!! Players usually say Dayz isn't meant for PVE but it can and should be - its the perfect platform. It should be a hardcore survival game first (which it sort of is esp when loot is rare and you're thirsty/hungry/freezing) before any PVP elements. There are so many bugs that need to be sorted esp the current state of the vehicles. however it IS a fun game esp when you have lots of zeds so that you do your best not to fire your weapon. Thats what Dayz should be.

This is what i posted on reddit: I play pretty much 100% on a PVE (no PVP) server and have quite a lot of fun, however once you've done everything (kitting up, base building, target practice on zeds) it does get a bit boring. What would be excellent would be to have a mode which is based on the old insurgency mod for ARMA3 (ie. the map had read areas which had lots of insurgents so you had to clear each area which removed the red from the map) - would be great to have something similar for DayZ. Not sure how difficult it would be to implement but imagine that - each of the cities has a LOT of zeds that spawn when you're there so you have to team up and clear them up, but starting with smaller towns on the coast then making your way towards say TISY or NWAF which would be swarming with zeds. You change the game from just 'lets survive' to 'we've survived, now lets get our land back'!! One of the replies i thought had excellent ideas is below: A really good PvE focused server can be done. It would be something different at the very least. The only drawback about increasing zombie count is server performance, max players would have to be reduced. Maximum 40 players instead of the usual 60-80 players but with dangerous zombie amounts. Heavily infested cities and military camps. Cities so crowded that one mistake will bring down a horde onto you. Looting NWAF should be like going through hell where you need to join up with other survivors. More common civilian weaponry/ammo (You need something to defend yourself with). It's not going to help much cause in this server, shooting a gun is the last thing you want to do. Very scarce food and water (DUG like) Plus whatever B.I. introduces on the upcoming survival patch I really think the amount of zombies forcing gunshots is going to offset the lower amount of players. Everyone's going to be running and gunning and someone nearby is bound to hear. Or make handheld walkies spawn with batteries and very common on the coast. Anyways, I'd definitely play on that server. Just don't know jack about hosting lol link to reddit:

I play on a modded PVE only server (with increased zeds) and really enjoy it. HOWEVER, to get the optimal gameplay we have to run 34 mods...yes 34 mods to fix stupid shit that should have been in the original game such as build anywhere, disabled building construction and especially the ability to drive without the fear of your vehicle turning into a helicopter for 10 seconds. Unfortunately whilst this is awesome for gameplay, it also makes the server highly unstable. I can't believe the devs released this as 1.0 with so many things missing eg. the inventory having a slot for a hunting bow...and yet there's no hunting bow in the game!! really? -
mate, i placed it in an apartment building in a room. flat as with square walls. How is that a stupid place?

No idea- I did the same in an apartment building with part of it in he wall and now it won't pack. I reckon its glitched. We've been DayZ'ed! 🙂

The dayz launcher is good but it doesn't show you the required mods (or download them) like the ARMA launcher does. I can't install DayZ SA launcher because my antivirus shows it as malware and constantly deletes it. Is there any other way to join custom servers and know what mods to d/l?

yeah the Zombie AI is a real let down in this game. I absolutely love it however zeds are more an annoyance than a real threat. What happened to the old monkey zeds we had back in dayz mod? But yes, the hit mechanics are really off - try and hit a zed running at you with an axe, and chances are it'll actually port right through your body and end up the other side. I mean WTF is that?? I've had multiple times where I'm swinging at the zed which is right in front of me, and hitting me with its blows, yet my axe is constantly missing it. The Devs should REALLY make zeds a menace. Have they watched World War Z? ok thats a bit extreme however in that movie they fear zeds. So should it be with dayz. How? 1. more zeds. 2. roving zed hordes. get zeds to walk around Chernarus following main roads. number them up to 100 if possible...just a slow walk. Imagine looting a town when suddenly you see the zed horde entering the other side. What do you do? I know what I'll do - RUN!!!

would be good to write up something on crafting (ie. what you can craft) and storing items eg. tents, barrels and especially burying stuff in the ground (which i only found out about yesterday lol). -
I'm based in Aust and play on official servers only - pretty much ALL the aussie servers are synced to realtime so when its night and I want to play = night time in game. My problem is, I've tried playing on US servers as well (usually Southwest, southcentral, etc) and yet it saves a diff version of my player ie. its not the same consistent player I have on the Aussie servers so I can't play with my mates.

the Devs SERIOUSLY need to do something about the constant night. I can barely play ANY Dayz at all because pretty much all the servers in the AUS/NZ region are night when I have time to play. This is BS. Totally frustrating because its just not feasible to run around at night.

1. Good work on the loot spawn (in military tents) problem. I was wondering why I couldn't find anything in the mil tents just NW of the airfield. 2. What 'penalty' will we get for changing servers? has this been clarified? (for the record, I don't server hop but if I do find a server with no loot, I'm not going to waste my time scrounging for rotten fruit). -
I prefer playing as a lone wolf. running around for km's with someone else isn't something I'd like to do (I've done it before and got bored). I have my own style of play and like to keep it that way.

I'm loving SA - the sounds, the graphics, etc. I know its an Alpha and I can handle the lack of loot, bandits, killing on sight, cans with no can openers, etc...thats all part and parcel. What I can't stand is the ability of Z's to walk through walls!! Its like there's no wall there for them. I don't mind it when I have a fireman's axe (my fav weapon) but when unarmed in a building trying to hide....nah.

yeah because I have the firemans axe (LOVE this thing btw), I'm constantly running right up to Z's and chopping them...they don't seem to notice me if I'm running up to them from the side or behind which is weird.

Headed up to the top of the towers near elektro...got kitted up and was playing with my inventory but didn't see someone else walk up the staircase with a spade = dead. Scared the crap outta me! lol. -
Does punching a Zombie kill it? I tried but died from blood loss - this is after knocking it down 6 times or so. Surely I could thrust my shoe through the back of its skull whilst its on the ground (just like in the walking dead lol).

Guys, give him a break. he's new and paid for the alpha so he's entitled to his opinion, just like you are. Yes we know DayZ is a zombie survival game - thats why he purchased it. However, the 'rules' in DayZ SA have changed compared to the mod ie. your 'timer' for thirst/hunger is so small. I can understand thirst but not food, esp when: 1. food is hard to find (esp canned food); and 2. when you do find it, you can't eat it because you then need to find something to open it with (fair enough). However, you couple the above with the short food timer and long distances between food sources, and what you get is frustration. I've died of hunger twice already after searching everything which is frustrating because I had lots of canned food but no way to open it. Yes its an alpha - I'm cool with that - they just need to sort out some basic stuff first, primarily the loot respawn thing. Btw, how do you know when the server was last restarted in the server list?

I'm glad these guys are getting global banned. I've stopped playing because of all the hacks which is killing the game for me. On the + side though...no wonder ARMA2 is high on the steam sellers list...all these idiots who keep buying the game because they got global banned. I wonder if the '1,000,000 users' is actually 850,000 with 150,000 repurchases! :) meh... -
I'm enjoying this patch. TBH, I haven't really noticed any diff. :\ I did notice though: 1. that I spawned and lost my main weapon (AKM + mags)...gone; 2. was checking out a little guard house when suddenly a Z spawned behind me (it was night..gave me the shock of my life!!) but before it could do anything, it disappeared again; and 3. saw a Z walk into a wall and got stuck there...and was changing shapes rapidly ie. from hopper to walker (white shirt, grey shirt, black shirt) and back again...freaky. Otherwise the patch is quite good.
