Shit like this is turning me off DayZ :/
JimiEZ (DayZ) replied to iStP's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
I'm confused, why the whining, when it seems to me you've just been able to participate in an awesome emergent gameplay situation? O__o There's no winning in DayZ, just variable lengths of survival before the inevitable failure. What you need to do, is to learn to appreciate these intense emergent situations in between. They are the actual reward for playing the game. Yeah, usually the most intense situations are the ones that end up with you dying and the feelings aren't necessarily very positive, but think about it for a moment. How many other games do you know, that can provoke such strong emotions? So you died in DayZ... but got to play a part in an intense, completely unscripted scenario and had a nice story to tell afterwards in exchange. Take that as a reward, then respawn and go out to seek more material to write your future tragedies about. :) -
I can't for the life of me understand why DayZ should be easy for noobs. I mean what for? It's not impossibly hard, as proven by the fact that hundreds of thousands players are playing the mod just fine, and you know what? Each and everyone of them has been a noob in DayZ at one point, some with more knowledge of the game beforehand, some less, but judging from the player amounts and server statuses, player retention rate is on a very healthy base. So why the fuck should it be dumbed down? You'd think that the OP as DF player should understand that you can't just take a complex and engaging game like DayZ (or DF for that matter, talk about a difficulty curve on that one) and condense it to a couple of "press A to be awesome" - tutorials. Both games kick you in the teeth right after you get in, and it's largely intentional.

Ban, burn and physically destroy all servers still using sidechat and/or don't upgrade to latest versions. <3 -
No starter weapon removes survival instinct, and respect for zeds
JimiEZ (DayZ) replied to breetai3's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Like others have said, you could behave exactly the same when you still had a Makarov when you spawned, as you'd just get the Makarov again if you died. In that respect nothing has changed. However, now that you spawn with less stuff, you're also less of a target for other players because you pose no threat and you have nothing of value to kill over, so overall there's probably less killing of FNGs except for pure griefing purposes. Yeah, it sucks if someone does kill you just to grief you, but like you just said yourself: What does it matter? You'll just spawn again at another location with nothing of value lost. -

Let's see. It's a non-commercial mod with a cliff-like learning curve, developed for a hardcore military simulator by a guy who according to his own words, "enjoys the tears of his players" and it just keeps getting harder and more complex with every update. I'd say it's whisky alright. ;) -

I agree that there entitled dicks on the both sides' date=' but I'd argue that most people who consider themselves "HC" (which is a stupid fucking term to begin with, I think) have nothing against new ideas [i']per se, they just quickly get tired of hearing the same "night is toe hard gief nightvizion and 'I win' buttan plox durr hurr' - shit pretty quick. Yeah, well Crpg's problem was the utterly stupid out-of-game inventory/skill management system which I think drove most new players away from it. Nothing to do with "HC", just shitty design. Though quite likely also the best you could do with M&B's engine. I'm absolutely certain that there is a surprisingly large demand for a skill-based / FPS - type MMO game, that isn't shit. Problem with all the current candidates is that they've simply been pretty shitty games overall. In some ways, DayZ actually is very close to my ideal MMO (except it doesn't really have the 'massive' part in it). Are we talking ARMA2 or BF2 here? Since I think BF2's PR has been doing pretty well overall but is starting to suffer from old age and ARMA2's PR was sort of redundant to begin with (one word, err, abbreviation: ACE). I actually don't even consider myself that much of a "Hardcore gamer", in fact most of the time I spend my time playing rather mainstream games. However, occasionally I do like to have a taste of a more demanding experience and when I do, I don't want it watered down. To put in to an analogy, most of the time I drink Coke, but occasionally I feel like having a glass of good whisky. When I do, I don't want to ruin a perfectly good drink by mixing it with Coke, even though I otherwise have nothing against it. So essentially, the "baaawh, make it easyer rockit" - crowd are trying to ruin my drink, and I don't like it. -

Been there, done that. Funny, I've never even seen a NVG in DayZ yet, still have managed to have fucktons of fun. Funny that. Then again, I also play Dwarf Fortress and Crusader Kings 2 so I understand that losing = fun. For you maybe. I've had plenty of co-operation with other players. Unintentional side-effect of creating the new awareness system for them. Which you'd know if you had paid attention to any one of the seven billion times rocket stated that their current behaviour is unintentional. I think rocket's vision for DayZ has been plenty clear since the beginning. Hard, cruel survival. Realistic where it serves as interesting fodder for survival interaction, but realism on its own really isn't the point. He wants to create a game that goes off the beaten path and deviates from the current generation of "press A to be Awesome!" - games and isn't afraid to challenge its players. I like that vision. If you don't, you really should play something else, because otherwise you're just going to have a bad time. Also, the mandatory: alpha is alpha is alpha. kthxbye. -

Complete bullshit. Name one game as an example of this. In fact there's already quite a few games that stand as examples that you absolutely *don't* have to "tone down" (ie. casualize / dumbify) and appease the casual masses in order to have a relatively successful game or a mod. Games like Dwarf Fortress and many other roguelikes are about as HC as you can get within games barring heavy duty flight sims etc' date=' have done absolutely nothing towards making the games more casual or accessible over their development. In fact many of them have just become more complex, cruel and "hardcore" over the years and what has the end result been? A faithful cult following, that's what. Sure, if you want to go crazy big and MTV large you have to suck the proverbial casual dick, but luckily it seems rocket doesn't have the slightest intention of doing so, at least with the mod. This is a [i']good thing too, since there's already plenty enough games designed with the lowest common denominator in mind. -
WTF is... TB interviewing Rocket for?
JimiEZ (DayZ) replied to duddbudda's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
I actually find myself disagreeing and not really liking TB's stuff most of the time, but I thought that the DayZ video wasn't too bad. Actually I found it pretty fun, much more entertaining than it would have been if they had just sat down and had a chat. Sure, most of the questions asked have been asked and answered plenty of times, but when you get down to it, pretty much every interview rocket does revolves around the same few questions. Do you know why? Because that's what people want to know, d'uh. Sure, you could try to go for a really "unique and original" approach and drill rocket for an hour about whether there will be flowerpicking in DayZ in the future, but who the fuck would really care? -
Xbox 360 Xmapper Presets Created for Day-Z

Lol nope. Unless you mean that an extremely good joystick/pad guy can just about compete against a small child holding a mouse for the very first time, then yeah, I see your point! -

You do realise that there are other ways of implementing a "levelling system" without having shit like xp and actual levels? In fact, it might shock you to know, that Rocket himself actually wants to add some sort of a character progress system to DayZ, the main idea being that people could diversify with out of combat abilities that would promote teamwork, like someone getting better as a medic for example. Would be especially awesome if it went hand in hand with some kind of a crafting system.

[FIXED?] Too many zombies DISCUSSION
JimiEZ (DayZ) replied to yoski's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Like others, I really liked 1.5.7 zombie numbers, but not so much the respawn timer. In 1.5.8 however, the zeds seem to have gone back from a threat to a slight inconvenience. Don't really even have to sneak to get into a town anymore, just waltz in and do whatever you want, the zombies won't really bother you unless you're completely blind. -
What kind of maps do you want to see in the full game?
JimiEZ (DayZ) replied to guitarxe's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Well there's already quite a few custom maps for ARMA 2, so it definitely wouldn't be impossible to have a custom map for DayZ. Nor is it actually *that* much work (obviously, it will take countless hours, but if there was a dedicated map maker guy etc.), especially if you mostly use the prefab buildings already in game. Also rocket has mentioned that due to how the mod is designed, it wouldn't take more than few hours to port the mod itself to a completely new map. -

How is that *not* taking credit? I know he's done a lot of scripting work in the community previously, but doesn't change the fact that what he did was a completely dick move and he should definitely take the d/l down. -

JimiEZ (DayZ) replied to robertstuartmarshall's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
I can fully relate to Rocket's irritation. The "creator" of the SP -version, the little cunt he is, stole Rocket's work and presented it as his own. That alone just fucking sucks, and then there are twats sucking up to the thief for the awesome job he did in copypasting DayZ code. Despicable. -
^this There's actually already a huge bunch of sp/coop only zombie mods for ARMA 2, so I'd rather Rocket just focus his efforts on making DayZ as awesome as it can be, without considerations for lite-version etc.

A simple, yet elegant solution. Should be quite doable as well, since in Vanilla ARMA 2 you can have an AI taking over if a player disconnects. Just use the same mechanic, but instead of calling regular AI routines on disconnect, call for a dummy one so that the character just stands there.
