It would be nice if you could never hear your own heartbeat, so if you ever heard one... you'd know for sure you were near a bandit. And currently it's only when you directly look at the player, there's a video I seen of a guy panning across a bandit and only when looking right at them, does the heartbeat show up, but in game when you aren't pals with them, by the time you look at them to hear it, you're pretty much dead. I think it should be when just near a bandit, within a certain range. So you know to be vigilant incase he is right behind the next wall or in the building you're about to enter. It's basically opposite ends of the scale changing from the bandit skin, which gave instant identification as a bandit, to the heartbeat where by the time you hear it, you're in danger of being shot in the face. Which pretty much gives everyone a reason to just shoot on sight instead of trying to find out. So yeah, at any range, directly looking at a bandit should have the heartbeat, so through binoculars/scopes etc..., and within maybe 30m or so it should start even without line of sight, as a warning. Whatever system is implemented though, should be as much of a punishment as the bandit skin was, which by appearance let everyone know you're a non-trustworthy pile of scum who everyone should hunt down and violate. It actually made people think twice about becoming one. Now though, it's the norm since people aren't even attempting to communicate.

How about making it a profile option, create a new profile and tick a box at creation making it a PvE only character, so you can only join PvE servers, so survivors can group up and fight together, which is an appealing thing to do. Leaving the box unticked means you can only join normal servers which adds the risk of hostile players. So people can have a different character for PvP and PvE. /solved, everyone's happy :D Edit: on PvE servers the number of zombies could be drastically increased, to say 1000+ with a full server. So it really becomes survival with so many, and it could be really fun. Gather all of the survivors in Cherno and get huge aggro to attract hundreds of zombies, then try and survive! Also, Global Chat should be in PvE servers, to be honest, I think it should be back in general. Last night when the servers were broke, for the first time in DayZ, I had a huge conversation with others and got to know people just sitting in a non-working server or running around debug land talking. Enjoyed it more than playing. :/

Yes, except this is a game, in real life there would be a HELL of a lot more humanity, I doubt even 10% of the people who go around in DayZ, gun people down and shoot unarmed people would ever do that in a real life situation. A game cannot replicate real life, because the person behind the character is never in danger, so humanity is thrown out of the window and the result is what we have now. A Survival game with the unique ability to band other survivors together against a zombie apocalypse, where 90% of people are killing every other survivor they see on sight, including people actively hunting down other survivors, or camping somewhere and gunning down anyone they see just for sport. In my opinion, The Walking Dead more or less got human nature spot on in the tv series. Even when coming up against other armed people, communication was made, they tried to reason and fighting was a last resort. Of course there's guys like Shane... but right now we have a game full of Shanes.

Hmmm, 1) Snipers may be the weapon of the preying bandit, but they are also used for scouting, covering others from a distance, and just clearing an area of zombies without getting aggro. If anything, I think more weapons of every type should be introduced. On bandits in general though that just shoot on sight, I think they need to be easily recognizable again, the bandit skin was great, it was a punishment for killing other players, something that makes other survivors shoot on sight and never trust you, you sacrificed the entire idea of meeting friendly survivors, because they know just by appearance, that you kill other players. People actively hunted bandits down as a sport, which was fantastic. Now though, with just the glitchy heartbeat thing, it's hard to know who you can trust and who you can't, especially at distance, which is making everyone just shoot on sight and abandon the idea of making friends and grouping with strangers, it's too dangerous. PvP can still be a part of DayZ, but personally, I think "bandits" need to be recognizable by appearance. So people might think twice about turning into a bandit since you would become fair game. 2) That system you described isn't good... 5 minutes is a long time, you'd never know if the next time you booted the game up you'd be a new character or not. To avoid disconnecting in combat, a simple 10 second counter would be enough, to quit, you'd need to stand still for 10 seconds, which will be interrupted by any movement or being shot/hit. So you always need to find somewhere safe to disconnect. And if someone forced a quit, their character would stay behind, standing still where it was for 10 - 15 seconds. So it wouldn't be an option to disconnect in the heat of battle. Server hopping is a harder issue to solve, but anything as harsh as a 5 minute timer would also punish people just finding a better server, or disconnecting because of a glitch or because the server happens to be night time (which many don't like), it would be rageworthy needing to wait 5 minutes between joining servers. Especially if your character was out of your hands and vulnerable for all of that time. 3) Stashing vehicles is a problem I agree, but I think the solution lies more with respawn rates than anything. Having proper map boundries would be good. But additionally I think the spawn rates for vehicles should be much shorter... If someone takes a vehicle, I'd want a new one spawned there within 2 hours, even with the other vehicle still on the map. Which gives the potential for servers to have many vehicles operating at the same time, they are a too rare at the moment in my opinion, I can't see any harm in having more vehicles on the map, so they become a less rare sight. I have played for hours every day for the past 5 days on full servers and I have seen no vehicles of any kind, anywhere. I also think Bicycles should become a lot less rare than vehicles, even if they were slightly broken and needed just a Toolbox to fix, every town should have a bicycle, realistically the majority of homes would own atleast one bicycle, so I don't think they should be that rare. 4) A single difficulty is fine with me. Also, how can name tags be abused?, is it just like looking around the landscape until a green name pops up, so it lets you spot people?, lowering it to 50m would be fine, so you could identify people who are around you. How can 3rd person be abused? o_O, I enjoy using it, I like seeing myself, anything one player can do with 3rd person, any other player can do, so it's a level playing field. I agree with the NVG being removed, unless there was more ways to see in the night, like floodlights, power etc...so they become less essential in the dark. I have never used GPS so I don't know what it offers, but if it's just a GPS like in real life, which lets you see yourself, and only yourself on the map moving around, then that isn't a problem.

No PK server: * The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen *
freak367 replied to Ghandi's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
What do you guys have against people who don't want to just be killed all of the time by other players? I don't see a problem with it, the mentality of a lot of people nowadays is to just shoot on sight, screw everyone else, which screws the game over, zombies should be the threat, but they are becoming more of an annoyance and other players are the main threat now. Just earlier today I found a guy with just an axe being chased by zombies, I killed them all and then defended him held up in Cherno from a horde of zombies, giving him my last supplies to keep him alive, just as the danger was clear someone walked in and blew both of our heads off with a shotgun, there's no trying to band together with other survivors, too many people make no attempt to communicate. Bandits used to be those few pricks that went around pissing everyone else off, who were easily spotted by the bandit skin which was the punishment for killing other players, you sacrificed trust, now though, the majority of people have the bandit mentality, I get shot so many times when I try to communicate with other survivors. A similar punishment system needs to be implemented so friendly survivors can spot bandits quickly, the heartbeat thing is crap, half of the time it doesn't work, and when it does, before you can react you get shot in the face. Atleast the bandit skin instantly pointed out who not to trust. So I support non PvP servers if that's how people want to play, if you don't like them, ignore them, and don't join them. Some people want to group up with strangers and have fun, create survival scenarios and meet new people. Survivors vs Zombies. That's the appeal of DayZ to some people. -
Unluckiest Thing That Happened To You?
freak367 replied to [email protected]'s topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Well, today when I first spawned, I was in the Cherno fire station, top floor where I disconnected yesterday. I had an AKM and Revolver with plenty of ammo, and was reasonably well kitted out. I checked the fire station for loot and picked up some odds and ends, not much though, then left, came to the road directly outside and seen a guy with an axe sprinting towards me with about 10 zombies on him. After about 5 seconds of thinking about the situation, I took out my revolver and picked them off around him as he screamed through his microphone for me not to kill him, which wasn't my plan anyways, as he got close I took out my AKM and finished off the rest of the zombies. He ran past me and into the fire station telling me to go in with him because of the aggro, I followed, bandaged him up and then we had about 15 zombies walking into the fire station, I popped them all with my revolver and some with the AKM, and then even more turned up, the aggro was extreme. He took some out with his axe as I continued to rip apart the masses of zombies, he ended up breaking his leg and bleeding so I bandaged him with my last bandage and gave him my only morphine, the aggro had stopped, we were finally safe. After about 10 seconds of this great feeling we had, when I was about to give him a blood transfusion, a guy pops his head around the corner of the door, just as I say hi, he blows my head off with a shotgun, then as I die I hear the guy I was with screaming hysterically through his microphone shouting "Oh no, PLEASE NO NO NOOO ~~~~~~~~~~" Was such an intense and fun situation, I was looking forward to taking this guy under my wing and getting him some decent gear. But then a damn bandit comes and ends us both :(, probably the only death that really annoyed me. Made all of that effort somewhat pointless. -
Lee Enfield or Double barreled shotgun?
freak367 replied to breakingbad's topic in New Player Discussion
I made the exact same choice once, seen a Lee Enfield with 30 rounds, swapped it for my double barrel. Then I went to loot a barn in the middle of nowhere, not many zombies around, seemed safe. Entered the barn silently but a zombie was already inside, had 24 Lee Enfield rounds left when I entered the barn. This happened. [attachment=1515] I can confirm, it is loud. I must have attracted every zombie within miles, safe to say after that, with my broken leg and being forced to use my hatchet, I didn't last very long. -
As a fresh new character spawn, I spawned on an island... literally an island, seperated from the main map by a few minutes of swimming. So I swam it, and walked up onto the main map and checked my gear to find everything useful missing. -_- So yeah, I respawned in that situation, it's surprising how useful the starting bandage and painkillers can be when you're doing the initial naked looting. It's Alpha though, so you know, this is the phase where lots of content gets added, balance is established, crap happens and things get smoothed out over time waiting for the major bugfixes that Beta tends to initially focus on.

thePicaroony If you check the link I posted to my steam page, you should be able to add me from there. As a general rule though with me and the name FreaK I use, the F and K are always capital, if anything is ever added into the end, it will be 367 or 377. Hell, if you google FreaK367, you pretty much get my life story, I dominate the results since I've been gaming for years, you can find my profile across hundreds of games and general websites. Feels good man, when I google my real name I get nothing, but when I google my gamer name, I feel popular.

After an hour of looting towns and barns I eventually made my fatal mistake. I seen a barn in the distance with a medium zombie presence around it. But it didn't seem too heavy, I figured I could make it inside without alerting a zombie. I made my way and stealthed through the landscape to the barn, walked inside to find a zombie inside, who was instantly alerted to me, I ran to the top of the barn and took it out with my Lee Enfield, I had 24 ammo for my Lee Enfield when I entered the barn, and I don't miss. I didn't have a sidearm however, but I didn't think I would need one for taking on a barn. It's a piece of cake right? Well... at this point I think pictures speak louder than words. Please see my first Attachment. [attachment=1462] I underestimated the zombie presence, and I got swarmed, took some bad hits but killed 24 zombies, I sat at the top of the barn holding my empty Lee Enfield looking down at even more zombies. There was no getting out of this situation so I threw Flares at them. (you never know). My leg was broken, I had no morphine, I had no ammo. This was my Final Stand, I wasn't going to give up without a fight, if I am going down, I'M GOING TO TAKE SOME OF THEM WITH ME! Please see my second Attachment. [attachment=1463] I equipped my axe, and crawled down the first set of stairs, killed 2 zombies on the second floor, then i crawled further to the top of the second set of stairs, 4 zombies walked towards me, I was swinging like a mad man, cut down all 4 and continued to crawl, at this point I had very little blood and I was bleeding. I got to the bottom where 3 more zombies descended on me, I cut them down where they stood and about 10 seconds later I passed out and soon after died on the spot. A warrior died that day.

The Guys You Should Kill on Sight Charts

Great idea, I always found it strange there is no safe zone, like a still operating military base in the mountains or an airstrip. Pretty much all sandbox games have safe zone(s). It would be somewhere safe for groups to meet up and to meet others to form groups, it would add a bit more depth to DayZ. The NPC protectors would need an FN FAL ANPV S4 each, so they could protect at huge ranges. And the safe zone(s) would have floodlights all around lighting it up. Random NPC's could be good, especially if they were interactive in some way. I don't know if this would be going too far, but it would be nice if at a certain time every night a horde of zombies would attack a safe zone, or the outskirts of one, and survivors would need to protect the safe zone alongside the NPC protectors, I can see a line of survivors around a safe zone gunning down zombies in the masses, the incentive being that those zombies would yield more loot, common, but more likely to have food, water, ammo etc... (maybe only the zombies killed by player fire) And it would be really fun. It would offer something more to do than just looting, surviving, and trying to create scenarios, people already hold up in a building and gain lots of aggro just to have some fun. An alarm and red light could sound about 5 minutes before an attack. (this idea is ripped from a game called Dead Frontier, which is a bit like DayZ, just a top-down version, where there are outpost attacks defended by both NPC and players) And like in Dead Frontier, there would be a safe-safe zone, such as a large hanger that has a line of NPC's with miniguns, so if you've taken hits and are injured, you can retreat back into the hanger to fix yourself up to then run back out and join the defense. Got to admit, that would be pretty fun, and the zombie attacks could even be controlled by admins, if it's getting too easy, spawn another wave of 40 zombies to join the attack. Keep it challenging :D Oh, and it would be awesome if safe zones had somewhere to store items, just like a 20 slot storage for each player, letting people store extra weapons and supplies. I really want this mod to expand into a proper game with lots of depth.

My steam name is FREAK2K5 http://steamcommunity.com/id/FREAK2K5 I'm GMT+0 so around the same time as you guys. I'll gladly group up, doing everything alone can be a pain, especially when coming into contact with other survivors, I'm way too trusting which has backfired a few times, in a group though, lone survivors wouldn't take us all on. And groups make getting cars and helicopters more do-able. Which is a part of the game I haven't really explored yet. I can't always talk through mic due to living in a flat with 2 others, but steam chat does the job in those cases, unless Direct Communication actually works, or group chat, if we can group. (again something I have never done)

The Guys You Should Kill on Sight Charts
freak367 replied to Mr Muggles's topic in New Player Discussion
I'm not going to stop being nice to people, I act like I would in real life, this is one of the few games that lets you really put your personality and humanity into a character. When I meet someone who doesn't instantly shoot, I salute them and communicate, if I have anything that could help them, I will offer it. I often pick up extra Binoculars, Watches, Compasses etc... so I can help others and give them useful tools. And when doing looting runs I always hit the hospitals to pick up epi-pens, morphine and blood packs so if I meet someone who has been in a war, I can fix them up, and they can me once the trust is there. If you see me in game, I can make a good ally and I do loot runs through Elektro and Cherno. And sometimes Airfields, which is about the only place where I am a lot more hesitant with other survivors, but I still give people a chance. Shoot first though, and I will give you a fight. ;) -
The Guys You Should Kill on Sight Charts
freak367 replied to Mr Muggles's topic in New Player Discussion
If the Survivor HQ thread on this is bigger, could someone link to it? I came across a guy named F3AR who was better equipped than I so I wanted to befriend him, he communicated through Direct chat, and seemed friendly, and I offered him some medical supplies since I recently visited the hospital and had about 6 bandages, 4 epi-pen and 3 painkillers. And then... BOOM, he blows my head off. Seems like the kind of guy who would act friendly, but betray you in a heartbeat. It was my fault for being so trusting, but, he played along for a couple of minutes. -
READ: Lets get these Lighthouses up and running

The game definately needs a solution to the pitch black darkness, either natural like the examples so far, or as mentioned in other threads, a way to repair and turn on power stations, flood lights around cities, workable lighthouses etc... all requiring player input to work, so people would ideally fix them up during the day ready to turn them on for the night. Using things like jerry cans (for gas powered/electricity generators), toolbox?, scrap metal etc... just things already in game.

READ: Lets get these Lighthouses up and running
freak367 replied to Dalton (DayZ)'s topic in DayZ Mod Suggestions
Great idea, even if they were just stationary old-school lighthouses, modified by the military soon after the outbreak before zombies took over. A large bowl of wood, ready to be set on fire, have a spawn point on the tower for matches and increased spawn chances in nearby towns for matches. Or they could have been modified to be gas powered, with a gas tank attached to the lighthouse, so the tank would need to be filled with jerry cans and turned on (via a handle) and the top lit with matches. Something like 1 jerry can = 2 hours of light, with the gas tank itself able to hold 5 jerry cans worth at one time. And at any time the lighthouse can be turned off by the handle to save gas. And a guage can be on the gas tank to show how much gas is in, like: And they would need to give off generous light, lighting the coast and hills in the distance, so it's actually possible to see at night around the coast. And the generator ideas are great, it would be nice if being in DayZ at night was actually pleasant, and wasn't completely pitch black. Even if flood lights were added around the cities that could be powered, one flood light at each side of a city, shining light down the main roads and streets. Each flood light with its own electricity generator at the base requiring jerry cans to power. And they would run about as noisy as a car engine. Like: Mainly the big cities, Cherno, Elektro, Berezino, a single flood light overlooking Stary Sobor and the like. Air strips should have multiple flood lights to really light the place up. You get the idea. I'm definately up for lighting up the night, I always avoid playing at night, can't see anything... -
Just a simple log-out counter would do. A few games have them. When you go to disconnect, a timer counts down from 10 seconds and then at 0 you disconnect, and you must be stationary, any movement other than just moving your mouse around to look about would cancel, and being attacked would cancel. Which means you need to find somewhere safe to stand still for 10 seconds. If you force a disconnect, you stand still where you were for 10 seconds before you disconnect from the server, leaving you vulnerable for those 10 seconds, if you die before the timer hits 0, your character dies in that server. Runescape actually has this, (horrible game I know), but in the Wilderness it meant you couldn't disconnect to escape danger. Took 10 seconds to either disconnect properly, or your character would wait behind for 10 seconds if you forced the disconnect. Hey, when a system works, a system works. The only problem is if someone has a power cut or some natural event that forces them to disconnect, it could cause them to die... but that can't really be taken into consideration.

I think we should be able to kick zombies away, like a front kick. Which can be selected as a weapon as if it were, well, a weapon. Or it could have its own key. Just since we spawn unarmed, it would mean instead of frantically trying to lose zombies when unarmed by sprinting everywhere and through everything to glitch them, you would have the option to go up a ladder then as they follow, kick them off to their deaths. Something I REALLY want to do. Since somehow zombies have the ability to climb ladders, we should have the ability to kick, this is about realism. A basic unarmed melee is a simple request, and it makes sense. Especially since virtually nowhere is safe from zombies, they climb ladders, walk through doors, attack through walls and have an insane running speed. There is no natural escape right now, and nothing we can do about it when unarmed. Nothing easy anyways, it often comes down to trying to glitch them.
