The "I know that guy" visual system

Oktyabr, I can understand your points about recognizing somebody already identified in the past. I don't have any issues with the recognition system you posted above, the actual mechanics sound like something that would fit well. I'd even like using a system like that, though there's still points of concern for me. 1) If the recognition system were to be in, I'd still want names kept out of it without some sort of formal introduction mechanic like what I mentioned above. This would put your system into 2 tiers. First stage is recognition that you've met the person before, that would be as you've outlined. Second stage is naming. Because you've scoped in on a person in the past shouldn't give you their name. You can recognize the person you've spotted in the past, but if they didn't give you their name, you shouldn't be able to see it now. 2) Profiles, characters, GUID and looks. Players can change how they look at a whim, they can also change their name. How would this fit in with the recognition system? If clothing and customization is going to enter at some point, how is that going to affect recognition? If you met a guy as a survivor skin for example, do you still recognize him later as a bandit skin or something else obscuring the face? //-------------- I'm sticking with the voluntary method of name association because I personally dislike somebody scanning and getting my name for free. I also believe that having a function to give out your name to others you physically meet could be a great addition to the social mechanics of DayZ. Interacting with other players and getting names becomes so much more important so that you can determine whether that person you see is a bandit you ran into a couple days back or that friendly guy that helped you out and gave you his name.

    Tent Maintenance to prevent de-spawning?

Is that feature even working? There's been a tent where the owner died over a week ago that's still active. In regards to refreshing tents, I'm not sure what Rocket's goal with this was in the first place. Tent de-spawning certainly makes death much more consequential though.

The "I know that guy" visual system

One way to introduce a mechanic for consensual name checks is add a new command tied to a key binding. Currently the salute is used by many without voice to try to indicate friendly intentions. A new feature could consist of an animation + UI trigger. What would happen is a visual indicator of the player model raising a hand or somesuch. In addition to the model's animation a flag could be set for a few seconds that allows anybody within a +/- 15 degree cone around that person's model to see the name popup like you do in the low difficulty servers. Limited time for UI name to be shown and short animation sequence make this useful for somebody verifying a name. It can also be useful for people asking identities, if you're unsure if that guy in side chat is talking about you with his crosshair pointed at you. Relatively unobtrusive, and it doesn't give out free information to people you may not want to have it. The benefits of this system is that you don't have data to track, you don't need friend systems, just accessing features already available and doing a quick animation and key binding.
  4. Hmm, completely missed this thread. This'd be great for more people to respond to, don't suppose there's a mailing list/newsletter type thing you can push these surveys out on? Don't really like the options for survival time. Some like 10-24 hours, 2-3 days, week would be nice additions. I do die, but 10 hours surviving isn't an issue. Only other feedback on the survey itself is an additional question about danger such rating how dangerous zombies are or somesuch. Example, in 1.5.7 it was somewhat risky looting a town in case you alerted the horde and had to blow all of your ammo fighting them off. With 1.5.8 you'll get a pretty small group sprinting down the road to gather them all up.

    Corpse Removal

I was wondering how long/what triggers corpse removal of player's corpses. IE how long you have to get back to your body? Do they stay even through server crashes?
  6. Heck, a steam sale at this point would probably get pretty insane.

    Performance Drop; 1.5.8.2 Hotfix

Bounce between sessions at 15 fps, other play sessions I'm running fine around 50 fps, same areas, just different restarts of client. Win7 Pro 64bit Steam install - Started with six updater, running AO beta patch, no steam overlay TS3 client for voice Radeon HD 4860 8GB RAM Core2 Quad - 2.83 GHz

    Timing of Patch 1.5.8

Even if the drop rate goes up at the hospitals, there's still only 3 of those throughout the game. If you could find them in every house, yes, it would marginalize the system. Between temp, infection, and hopefully improving comms ingame, I'm very interested to see how the game evolves.

    [VIDEO] Rainbows

Saw a rainbow few weeks back, haven't seen one since. Anybody seen them lately or taken shots?
  11. Felix (DayZ)

This is why you don't run through a town

Heh, scary bunnies. Small horde out of that town, still fun.
  12. Temp and infections are going to be great.
  13. Felix (DayZ)

    Timing of Patch 1.5.8

Geez. You are going wild. This temp and infection sounds like it should make life more iteresting this patch.
  14. Felix (DayZ)

    So does the loot respawn?

    Yes, it does respawn.

    Tents & Vehicles General

Stand behind the door gun a little towards the tail rotor and look towards the gun. That's usually the best spot to get the repair context to show up.
  16. Felix (DayZ)

    Timing of Patch 1.5.8

How about we see how well what Rocket and company came up with handles the update?
  17. Felix (DayZ)

    Timing of Patch 1.5.8

Then you've got every single player pounding the servers at the exact same time every day. This is not a good thing.

    Timing of Patch 1.5.8

A reliable local chat ingame would be great to have again. I'm really interested to see how gameplay changes when people can actually communicate easily and locally with each other.
  19. Hmm, first time getting killed by a player was after playing about 12 hours on 4/24. Had just made it inland to Pusta and was feeling great about how far I had gotten in and even found a town with some loot. I was merrily looting the place when I got blind-sided while crouch walking past a group of zombies. Not really exciting, no warning, just some shots, a screen and sitting back thinking "Well, crap. Hmm, I'm hungry" First player I killed was up at NE airfield. Guy named *GRU*Bambiz or bizbam or something. He'd been sneaking along up at the control tower while I was prone in the shrubs off to his side. I started talking to him in direct chat and he freaked out and started sprinting all over. He ended up finally running inside the atc while I was busting a gut in TS. After he was inside for a few seconds he starts asking "Friendly?" in side chat. After responding that I was I stood up in the grass outside at which point he started blasting away with his winchester. A quick prone and roll kept me alive, then I put a slug in his chest since he was sitting out on the balcony of the atc in full view. He keeled over then did a quick disconnect. I'm pretty sure he died wherever he came back in, but its close enough for me to count that as my first kill.

    Perceived usefulness of Weapons.

When Rocket licks the refreshing mag issue with relogs the winchester really will be the best thing around unless you live on a military base. I've heard rumors of nerfs to the winchester, but I've not personally read anything about it in here. I've no idea what methods might balance the gun out though. As far as the PDW, its an awesome weapon. Not only because of the flexibility in ammo it can use, but also because an mp5 mag can run it and take up normal inventory. Which at times can give you some nice flexibility to use your secondary slots for other things. For secondaries, nothing beats the pdw in "Kill-able zombies per inventory slot."
