    Larger map + more players

Although I agree it would be more fun if more players could join a server, I think it would be impossible to create a stable and lag free server... Right now, DayZ requires a mid-end server to run 40 slots and even then the connection isn't always perfect (especially during rush hour). If you want to double the amount of slots you would require a super computer to even calculate the zeds (since more players means more zeds, just for balancing), not to mention the amount of data which needs to be send to the HIVE every now and then. A regular ArmA2 server can easily handle 80 to 100 players, but DayZ currently requires to much CPU and data to be served on regular game servers. (yes, it's possible, but very expensive!) Maybe the standalone version can improve the net coding and move scripts from the mod to the core to decrease the CPU load, but it still would generate a lot of data to be send to the HIVE (already 2TB per month!) To be honest, I don't think it will happen, but maybe Rocket and the devs have other ideas about increasing the amount of players per server (physically or virtually).
  2. I guess you should stop playing and let other players fill your useless server spot... Now, back on topic: Like Arch said, if you already own ArmA2:CO it's easy to download DayZ and play for free while you can. If you don't own CO yet, buy it anyways! Not only can you play DayZ for free, but also thousands of other mods!
  3. Right now the spawn system of DayZ is based on 2 things: 1) area of where zombies are allowed to spawn 2) area which triggers the zombies to spawn The first area, spawn locations, are fixed and placed around buildings and "hot spots" like deer stands. This area has a radius (like 20m) and the number of zombies to spawn (like 3 per area). The second area, the trigger, is connected to the spawn area, is roughly 300m and the center is the same as the spawn area. Now, when a player walks into a trigger area it will make the zombies spawn. On high density locations, like large cities, you're walking through multiple trigger areas and therfor spawn multiple zombies at the same time. In this topic I saw 2 different suggestions, which I'll explain by the above method: 1) creating a larger trigger area connected to a large spawn area. (zone spawning) This might be a good idea, however will most likely cause a lag spike every time someone hits a trigger area, since it will spawn a lot of zombies at the same time. 2) creating a trigger based on Line-of-Sight. This is simply not possible with the current engine. The triggers are simple true/false switches which checks if a player is around. And even when the devs manage to create LOF-triggers, it will cause lag spikes when someone on high ground is turning 360 degrees and therfor spawning everything he/she might be able to see. The best solution to prevent zombie scouting is by increasing the size of the trigger areas, or manually resize them for each locations (in cities very small, in open fields very large, etc).

best place to refuel a helicopter?

Usally you can find fuel tanks at airports and gas stations (larger ones). Although those places are either at hot locations (airfields) or close to towns which will attract other survivors (gas stations). The "best" method to fill you tank is by hiding your helo, get some empty jerry cans and either walk or use some fast transport (motor, ATV, car) to fill them up.

    The Survivor Running Speed

If you've ever played ArmA2 with ACE enabled (and stanima is set at the server), you'll notice a big difference! You'll move slower when you carry more stuff and it even has a maximum (so carrying an rocket launcher and all slots filled with rockets results in not able to run at all). You get tired when running/sprinting and gives you blackouts. A real killer when zeds are around. The only way to move from point A to B is by walking or using motorised transport, unless at very short distances (running from cover to cover). Personally, I would love to see this in DayZ but it does require a lot of balancing to the zombies (give them stanima too, or make them slower), otherwise it's a death trap. OT: I love the useles numbers!

    What weapons do you carry?

I've got a hatchet, and it kills stuff too...

    Sniper survival game.

Just go to Cherno or Elektro, run around and wait for a headshot... and gone is your pain.

Found an Easter Egg, of sorts..

I found an easter egg too! Or actually, I found the eastern bunny!!! It was running through some fields chasing a cow! OT: great, another fake Yeti photo...
  9. Oh really? A hacker who manages to kill 2 guys with a hatchet? He must be bad-ass... Not to mention the fact that you played on a server which has name-tags enabled, so he probably followed you already or saw you guys running BEFORE going prone and still was able to see you by your tags. And since this is enabled, I guess that's the reason why you saw all the player locations, since last time I checked DayZ doesn't have a kill cam...
  10. My personal answer; no... And the reason of my answer is actually very simple: DayZ takes place in a post-apocalypse time, at east european or russian location. This means the weapons should fit this time and location. The FAMAS is a modern weapon, although not widely used around the world (only the French themselfs) and I'm not sure about the durability of the weapon (compared to the AK-family). Not to mention the fact that either the AK or M16/M4 are so simple to use that even an American or Irakees child can use it, and I've never seen one of them shoot a FAMAS. The change you would find a FAMAS during DayZ would be nihil and if you find one, you rather stick to your trusty M16 or AK. Oh... and it's French... nuf said...

    CryEngine 3 - Possible?

I think it's safe to say that DayZ will never change the engine. However due the fact that DayZ will become a standalone game Rocket can do more with the engine then just modding; he has access (and the knowledge) to make changes deep in the core of the engine and create his own fork (just like Take on Helicopters). Not to mention all the changes he can make by using codes from ARMA3 (or re-use his own code ;)) directly at the core, which will make the game much smoother without the need of a super computer (like the CryEngine). So, just be patient and have faith in Rocket and the new developers to make DayZ even better then it is right now.

    economy in Day-Z?

Why not define a trading economy yourself? We all know that empty cans are useless and worth close to nothing, where as NVG's and Rangefinders are very rare and therefor worth a lot. Survivors are already trading equipment with eachother based on how rare it is and how much the want an item, this is what an economy should be. The fact that there are people who rather shoot you instead of trade an item is also human nature. Adding a currency will not change this behavior, not make it a better game.

    Help With Server !!!

I'm afraid you won't find much help at this forum... You really should contact the hosting company for more assistance.

    Mission editor help

I've got a similair problem, although I know why it doesn't work; The zombies which can be found in ARMA2 are not the same as in DayZ, especially the coding behind it. You might be able to extract the zombie code from the DayZ mod, or use another mod to access similair coding. As for the "suicide cars": just use triggers and event. How to use this; check the ARMA2 forums or watch some videos on YouTube about the editor.

    DayZ Survival Guide

BTW.... you might check the guides at http://www.dayzwiki.com/wiki/Guides_%26_Tutorials which contain a lot of useful content provided by the community. If you would like, you could create a page (or pages) on the wiki which can be filled with information by others too. I could help you set up; like giving access to upload images and stuff.

    DayZ Survival Guide

Another suggestion, and this is towards anyone who can, is to create a singleplayer/coop training mission with some simple tasks, like: "find a hospital in Cherno" or "find a tent somewhere north of Electro". This can be easily done by the in-game editor, if some help from the developers is recieved (requires some DayZ codes like Zed stuff) and the ability to use SP within DayZ (so the mod files can be accessed). Currently my "training" is simply in vanilla Chernarus where all players spawn at the same location (with some custom gear), but could become much more with the right coding. eg. - you spawn at the beach between Cherno and Electro. - near the spawn you'll find a fire range, obsticale course and - you'll recieve some tasks and a detailed explanation at the briefing screen. (maybe make use of the tutorial function in ARMA2) - Electro is "zed free" and can be used to learn the different buildings and loot locations. Also perfect for teamwork training. - Cherno is a "danger zone". When you're nearing the area (eg 500m from border) the player recieves a message "Watch out, zombies ahead!". After 250m the zombies will spawn and a task will appear like "go to the following locations: hospital, church, offices, harbor and firestation". - tasks like "repair the vehicle found at grid 000 000" or "reach the air control tower at Balota" would be usefull for surviving. These are just some random ideas I come up right now, but you'll get the idea. It basically learns the player what they should know before entering the dangerous world of DayZ.

    DayZ Survival Guide

I really like your idea, however I suggest you keep it more general. Please do not add "best routes to walk for the best possible loot" or loot-maps with vehicle spawn locations. Rather create a real guide where you teach people what to look for, instead of telling them where to go. "Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime." You also might do the same thing I'm currently starting: giving ARMA2 and DayZ in-game training. At the moment I run a private server (ARMA2, not DayZ) where I invite friends and clanmates who just started playing. In-game, with help of our TS3 server, I teach the basics of the engine (walking, shooting, navigating, etc) without fear of behing chased by zombies or other survivors. I also teach them some more advanced topics like teamwork and stuff, but that's optional. Then I restart the server and let everybody spawn at different locations in Chernarus (just like DayZ). Now they should be able to meet at a meeting point we checked out earlier. When nobody had problems finding this place, we all disconnect and go to an empty DayZ server and do the same thing. After meeting again, we all go to some known locations as Electro and Cherno to teach the known loot spots (like churches, supermarkets, hospitals, etc.), although I let THEM decide where to go and where to look for. I only give them hints. Within a day they're ready to play all by themselfs, without any form of "cheating" and managed to pick up a decent starter kit by playing together. And I always suggest to read the ARMA2 Bible: http://ttp2.dslyecxi.com/

    Ghillie Suits Protect Against Thermal

The ghillie is perfect for off-road PVP, but terrible in urban environment or againts thermal scopes. Which is, like many said before, as realistic as (in-game) possible. This doesn't mean other advantages/disadvantages (or different clothing with them) should be added for balancing. Rocket already "leaked" that more different types of clothing will be added to DayZ, however this isn't a priority yet. Some clothing ideas I've seen and heard from both the community and Rocket himself: - "standard clothing": just like now, keeps you warm (higher temp drop) and a perfect all-rounder - "urban clothing": more 'camouflage' in cities and urban locations, less warm - "off-roud clothing": more 'camouflage' in forests and fields, less warm - "rain coat": no negative effect when raining, but bright yellow/orange - "winter clothing": very warm (perfect during nights), but has reflectors - "ghillie suit": almost 'invisible' for players off-road, but no warming at all This could add a "thermal suit", which makes you invisible for thermal scopes but is all black, so visible with the naked eye. Conclusion: I agree more balancing should be added as for the clothing, but making ghillies invisible for thermal scopes is not even possible in CoD...

    Hackers stealing files off servers.

I'm sorry to be bold; but if you host a server it's your own responsability to create a safe environment. Installing an Anti-Virus and a Firewall (and running them) SHOULD be priority number 1 when having a server which may or may not be hacked. This doesn't only apply to a DayZ server, but for anything that's connected to the internet in any way (especially servers). Having a Linux server doesn't change anything, they're as simple to hack as Windows servers unless you know what you're doing. So install a Firewall and configure it correctly, install an AV and run it at least once a week, and make sure user rights are set correctly so no one can ever reach administrator status without being on the system physically.
  20. It almost looks like a random number; Last week I shot someone (not the sheriff though) at some distance and while I walked towards his/her corps, it disappeared in thin air. I knew the person was dead, and the flies where still buzzing around. I guess this was within 2 minutes after the kill! After that I walked towards a town and got killed myself. No problem, it's a part of the game, so I respawn and went towards some friends who where on the same server. So after getting some new gear, we headed to the same town I went earlier and we found a body. This was me, with most of my gear. However, this was about 30-40 minutes after I got killed!!! So I'm not sure if it's just a random number, or if it's related to people disconnecting (after dying), but it can be very annoying...
  21. I've tried DayZCommander, although I don't like it at all... Reason: all I can do is start DayZ, while I also play other mods (and vanilla). I agree it's much simpler and a lot faster then SixUpdater, although SixLauncher is a mix between both. If you only play DayZ; DayZCommander is a perfect tool, but for everyone else is SixUpdater a must. Oh... and about the server listing; DayZCommander is missing a lot of servers too, let's say the same servers, since they both use the same system to retrieve them. Best solution: start the game without connecting to a server directly and use the in-game server browser instead.

    ACRE Support

I almost gave you a can of beans; however I have one question: Do the radios still work after a reconnect or switching a server AND still have the same settings (channel, power, etc.)? The reason is that an unused radio has the base classname (eg. ACRE_PRC117F) which is perfect for loot spawns. However, the moment someone picks up a radio it does 2 things: 1) it changes the classname (eg. ACRE_PRC148_ID_4) to match the ID (which could be useful as an additional check) 2) it stores the radio settings, per class, locally at the server. This has 1 problem: the radio ID's are unique per server, not unique to the HIVE! This means you'll need a couple of things to make it work: 1a) while saving at the HIVE, it's needs to store the object without an ID (the regex method), but WITH the radio settings. 1b) during/after saving at the HIVE, the item may not change in any way. Otherwise the settings will be lost, since the local server can't track the radio anymore and removes the settings. 2) when you connect to a server, you'll recieve a standard radio (without ID), the server gives you a new ID (unique per server) and then resets the radio settings. Although I'm not familiar with the connection with a DayZ server and the HIVE, these "problems" I see are based on my experience as a programmer. Please correct me if I'm wrong in any way, or if all the problems I see are already taken care of.

  24. You already can: just make sure you have a server which can handle it and contact the DayZ team to recieve the files and information to host the server. However, since DayZ is connected to a single hive it's not possible (nor allowed!) to have private servers. Hopefully Rocket and the DayZ team will allow this in the future, but this also means your character can not be persistent over all the DayZ servers anymore.
  25. So.... what's your point? He got shot, but not killed and disconnects since no one is near to help him (AFTER the bastard left him to die). I would do the same since useally it takes a shitload of time before you die (if you die at all), and friends can walk towards me to help me. When someone shoots me, and manages to kill me (by walking towards me or keeping firing at me) I won't disconnect, but when they shoot me and leave I will. Using ALT+F4 as a last resort to prevent dying DURING a firefight is a no-go and should be banable (at least per server). Quiting the game while heavily wounded so friends can patch you up; no problem with that.
