Well that's good to know at least! Ya sadly i'm full aware our pitiful level of access really leaves us little better than public players who can reboot the server but given it's a service we pay for I don't want to be left carrying the can and the bill for a server that's blacklisted =p but I know it's mostly due to the restrictions and abuse of the Alpha TOS. I've worked in IT for the better part of 15 years so trust me the password is secure, 14 digits, Letters numbers and special character substitution, nothing related to the server, host or our publicly listed names or DayZ and no dictionary attack will help. Ok at least I know it was done via the panel, I've asked the host (Host Altitude) to let me know when/how/by Whom it was locked and for how long so I can investigate from there. I do have 2 friends who have the admin deets but I trust them both when they say It wasn't them. I'm just waiting for the server to go quiet (it's still full and I can't login to game from here to send a shutdown message) before I stop the server to change the password just in case. This time it will be a password that will take even the most powerful super computer on earth (that we know about) 394 years to brute force or a couple billion years for the average machine.. If it stll gets locked again I'll know something seriously dodgy is going on or someone in the secret service likes DayZ and our Server and want's it all to thesmselves XDDDDD ;)

Running DayZ Locally?
[email protected] replied to [email protected]'s topic in Mod Servers & Private Hives
Seems a shame it's not allowed (Wasn't aware of that) after all if it's not linked to the Hive there is no harm I would have thought. I suppose if it's published to the public server list it will confuse people who don't know the difference between Hive and non Hive and removes players from the main pool needed to test the alpha. Hopefully once it's release there will be support for "Private" Lan servers. Would be a shame to shackle such a brilliant mod by not allowing people to have local games they can mess about with :) -
Is a mic really mandatory?
[email protected] replied to Tabris07's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Well at the end of the day a Cheap mic can often be worse than no Mic with the feedback and distortion but I think in this game it's the intense emphasis on Distrust that makes voice comms so vital, after all even people who aren't going to Just KOS will usually only have a second or two to decide if they want to shoot you or not and it can take long than that to type out a message even if they notice it at all at the bottom of the screen while focusing on you :) Also with the emphasis on keeping moving you can move and talk but can't move and type ;) But I hope you find a team who can work with you :) Having been without a mic for a time before I sympathies -
What was your last legit kill
[email protected] replied to Julia_Shafer's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Hmm, last non SOS kill was after dying multiple times to Survivors and coming up on the back of a survivor who had just cleaned out Cherno Market so I needed his stuff, Turned out he had almost nothing on him which I felt bad about =p Last Kill was when someoe "logged in" right in front of me and I decided to wait a second and shout out Hi, Friendly. Supprise Supprise they opened fire with a Makarov, my AK74 won but I didn't notice he had winged me and I was bleeding until I went grey and passed out DOH. Bandaged up at 2K. -

It's interesting that he can change your load out especially as that could worringly get people global banned for having hacked inventory! -

Thanks for sharing, good to see what they can do currently and I'd say don't sweat it, you made the best of the situation and are doing good with it ;) -

Hells yeah :) Best my groups managed so far is a Tractor -
I had the G17 but dropped it as the stopping power was non existant and you needed a mag per Zed! >_<

I agree, I have the same and it's odd, on some servers I can see well enough at night that I can get around. On others I can turn my monitor off and not tell the difference, I've done a LOT of crawling around in fields at night and I've NEVER seen it as dark in real life as it is in game XD Certainly a High priority bug imho, while it doesn't effect everyone all the time it does spoil a large part of the game. At least IRL I have NVG :( Our server DE 188 is effected, at night it's unplayable and I can't figure out why >_< Sure you can use Chem lights etc and your Torch but until you can use your Pistol in one hand with the torch in the other this is kind of pointless as once you get into an engagement you are blind again and you'll need an infinite supply of chem lights to travel any distance. You should be able to navigate (albeit poorly) at night short of a new moon with Chemlights/flash lights being there when you need them to search or go indoors, not to go cross country.... I suspect most of those who shoot down people who raise the issue server hop to avoid night or are simply lucky enough not to have this issue (And of course the trolls)

Warning and ROE(Rules of Engagement)
[email protected] replied to Thatgingerkid's topic in New Player Discussion
Heh we all would have done the same :) The chat/Talk Commands ( / and Caps lock) aren't the most intuitive and I imagine a lot of people jump in without doing the ARMA Tutoiral or reading the key binds, but that doesn't excuse a lack of common freaking sense :) If you don't know if he's friendly or coming in to cap you, you don't risk your life and stuff, you put down the threat :) If I get a chance I normally tell them it's / to chat or Caps to talk if you have a mic, but in your situation it was kill or possibly be killed =p -
HAHAHA Good STORY

Heh I like that the warning bells started ringing just before the gun shots...Hey wait a second...OH SHIT!! >_< -
I think I understand bandits
[email protected] replied to Tigger (DayZ)'s topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Nice :) Yeah it's that he has what I want but do I really want to murder him for it moral quandry that is making this game slightly more than the sum of it's parts. Any game that makes you really feel and think about stuff like that is ace ^_^. But yes the Cynic in me tells me he likely wouldn't have returned the favour XD. Even after a score of pointless death by players I still haven't got it in me to just gun someone down in cold blood but what I consider "threatening" is now verging on paranoia so bad I almost may as well be XD Certainly anyone point a gun anywhere near me gets a blast to the face ^_^ -
So after hitting "RESPAWN" instead of "Options" last night (yeah yeah I know) I started over on US 124 to resupply. I started by the Airfield out of Cherno and didn't find anything useful so I hit Cherno. Market, Fire house both barren so I hit the hospital and tents. As I'm leaving the hospital with just an Axe I see another survivor heading in from my left so I pretend not to have seen him and just sprint over the road towards the tent then duck by the wall. Supprise supprise he sprints after me, Turns out he only has an Axe as well in the same situation so I call out and we end up teaming up. My biggest concern was I had an Alice Pack on but when I see he does (and pulls out a pistol to boot which he was keeping as "a trump card" I figured I litterally had nothing to loose. My past experience meant I didn't trust him as far as I could throw him but could "use him" for now. I hit the tents while he hits the hospital and I find an MP5 with 2 mags and I already had a Silenced Mag on me. I know from experience the MP5 is weak compared to many others, a fact I play up when we regroup to discourage him dropping me for it given we are going to get better at the Airfield We hit the Airfield to find it fairly empty when we come round the hangers see "Ninja" Running right at us with what looks like a Sniper rifle (looked like an AWP / AWM) I start yelling for him to STOP STOP, then I spray a warning shot at his feet and Shout LAST CHANCE. He stops and my new friend goes round behind him so he sits down. No talking from him at all so we search him and find he has litterally nothing on him not even ammo for the gun so we just ignore him and carry on. When we find likely looking ammo in the hangers we then sprint back to take it off him but he's long gone =p We do get an AK for the other guy though at which point I feel safer but it was funny as we then both spent the trip back to Cherno making sure neither got behind or out of sight of the other, must have looked like something out of a bad comedy. After you, no no, after YOU....ok we go together, 1 2 3....you didn't go...nor did you...etc =p Cherno is still emtpy. A bit of tension as I go in the back of the market not realising i've muted myself and he can't hear me reply when he tries to ID me from the front..... We come across another survivor who looks like he's taking aim at my "new friend". When he notices me as well, aiming at his head, he calls out "don't kill me dude, I'm friendly" ...uh huh.... We then all get shot at by a dinner bell in the Industrial building West of the Hospital and decide to go in and teach him a Lesson but can't find him. At this point it's near midnight for me so I tell them I'm going to log out. They both say Good bye...while making a sprint for my location, weapons up.... I think that night was the most fun I've had so far and that it was the right balance. No out and out deathmatch slaughter but a constant distrust and "are you useful to me or dead weight" balancing of the scales ;) That said playing with Real life mates has also been fun and a lot easier, but I have to admit I did enjoy the tension and grave yard humour that came with it.

Nice tips man. Also I like the printed map as over reliance on the online map never really encourages you to actually READ the damn thing. Just learning to read the map (elevation / Basic orienteering etc) really help stop you getting lost. Just knowing your rough area from the splash screen then taking a look at the surrounding hills / tracks / roads and being able to say I'm HERE, and this is THAT WAY is so nice, especially when you want to loot deer huts en route! You really need a compass to do this well though :(

 Ok Manly McManlison, you go do your Christian Bale thing and chew gravel while growling to yourself up in the hills alone and stabbing people to death with their own femurs while us "girls" go have fun =p :D -
It would be nice to have a server setting that doesn't allow a player ID to reconnect within X minutes of disconnecting to limit this sort of stuff without overly punishing people with crappy connections. Maybe have it exponential so multiple discons - recons inccours a longer and longer wait time.

XD now that looks like fun, Shame "That game" died before I got here :( -
Alt-Tabbing is not recommended due to some serious life thretening bugs ;) I think most people refer to DayZDB map or some such when they mean having the map on another monitor. Bugs with Alt-Tabbing range from the annoying "Stuck direction Button" when you tab back in so your character won't stop moving. Single shot fired from whatever weapon you are holding To the FREAKING annoying FIRE STUCK ON which wastes your ammo and gives you away or worse ;) All these bugs are fixed by hitting ESC then back into the game but by then it's sometimes too late ;) If you have to Alt Tab put your gun down or switch to secondary first to be safe. Yes Printing the map out works if you can print it A3 but A4 should work fine too =p

Lots don't, but I think if you play for any period of time you do end up with a "better safe" than sorry attitude that is VERY heavily skewed to the safer end of the spectrum. That probably makes it feel like you are killed for no reason more often than is really true, albeit the "reasons" can be pretty shallow. I don't consider "for the lolz" a valid reason. I don't kill for the hell of it but I certainly kill at the slightest excuse now purely because it is so often, me or you.

As new player stories help encourage me and my friends to get this game I wanted to share my experience a week after starting: WARNING I like writing ;), anyone who looks for TL:DR Tags may as well skip to the end now. Day 1 (1) I open my eyes and find myself on a beach, I have no idea where I am or how I got here, only that the Zed Apoc is here and I have to survive. I feel confident and excited. The average life expectancy is 34 minutes, but I'm sure my skill will see me well past that meagre statistic. I check my Gear and see I have nothing but a Flashlight, Bandage, Painkillers and my wits to Shield me. It's a nice sunny day and I feel good. There appears to be a derelict Petrol station in the near distance so I head straight for it and I'm not 10 steps off the beach when I hear a blood curdling screech. Turning quickly I see a Zed jerking in my direction at a rapid pace, Unarmed I flee for the perceived safety of the Petrol station only to notice too late that there are many other Zeds in the forecourt. I bowl past them and into the station praying for lady luck to grant me a weapon but I find only empty tin cans. I dart out the back of the Station and head for the Hills and trees to try and loose the Zeds but they don't let up, nipping at my heels for mile after mile. I'm probably not a half mile from where I woke when one finally makes a snatch for my ankle and I fall twisting it badly and I'm just another Zombie meal, well short of the 34 minute average. Day 1 (2) I open my eyes and find myself on a beach, I have no idea where I am or how I got here, only that the Zed Apoc is here and I have to survive. I feel confident and excited. The average life expectancy is 34 minutes, but I'm sure my skill and experience will see me well past that meagre statistic. It's a nice sunny day and I feel good. I see docklands down the coast and cautiously make may way there, scanning the horizon for Infected. As I near the perimiter wall I hear the groans and shuffling of Zeds so I crawl in and take a peek. 3 Zeds, 2 walking and one hopping around on all fours, 1 Out building and a large industrial type. Crawling into the Shed first I find a combat knife and some cans of Coke, warm but I figure I'll drink them anyway. I pop open a can and all of a Sudden I hear shrieking and two of the Zeds bowl into the Shed after me, I die trying to find out how to use my combat knife, trapped and alone, not even 3 minutes in. I picture the average survival time clock ticking down a notch just because of me. I decide to go read a survival guide.... Day 1 (3) I open my eyes and find myself on a beach, I have no idea where I am or how I got here, only that the Zed Apoc is here and I have to survive. I feel confident. The average life expectancy is 34 minutes, but I'm sure my skill, experience and Study will see me well past that meagre statistic. It's a nice sunny day and I feel alright. I see docklands to my right and a Lighthouse slightly out to sea on an Island, I head in to the Docks I raid the buildings for a Fire Axe, some drinks and road flares. Heading out I manage to agro one of the Zeds so take a running leap of the Docks and swim for the Island intending to raid that. It's a long cold Swim against the currents with the Zed swimming along behind me until I finally loose him about half way out and make land, but I seem to have lost my backpack and Fireaxe along the way too... The Island is barren, then as if I wasn't cursed enough, kicking a rock in frustration I somehow manage to trip and fall breaking my leg on a damn stone......I die shortly afterwards on a barren Island but at least it took me more than 30 minutes to starve to death this time... I beat the average...go me! I go to look up Known bugs and how to avoid them... Day 1 (4) I open my eyes and find myself on a beach, I know that I am near Balota and that the Zed Apoc is here and I have to survive. I feel alright thought a little frustrated. The average life expectancy is 33 minutes, but I'm sure my skill, experience, Study will see me well past that meagre statistic. It's a Sunny Afternoon. I know there is an Airstrip near by and raid it for an M1911a Pistol and several mags, food, drink and bandages. I then head in to nearby Cherno hoping to raid the Supermarkets and houses for a bigger bag and better weapons. Dropping a few Zeds on the way I sneak into the Supermarket and find a 16 Slot backpack which I promptly switch out for when another survivor dives in chased by Zeds, he appears unarmed so I drop the Zeds and bandage him up. He's pretty quiet, probably shock, he just stares at me.... No reply to my questions so I carry on looting, I'm picking up a box of matches when I feel a thud and get dizzy, wet stuff dripping down my neck, I turn around...why's he holding a fire axe...why's it in my head..... Day 1 (5) I open my eyes and find myself on a beach, I know that I am near Kamarovo and that the Zed Apoc is here and I have to survive. I feel Angry. The average life expectancy is 33 minutes, but I'm sure my skill, experience, Study and new found caution will see me well past that meagre statistic. The day is starting to get cloudy which means more shadows to duck and dive into. I head towards Cherno, raiding the Airstrip and millitary out post along the way. By the time I reach Cherno I have a PDW, M1911a, and various bits of gear. I raid the firestation then the Supermarket and get an Alice pack (YAY!!) and lots of survival gear. Hitting the Hospital and see it's not been touched yet, I smash my way in and stock on on enough medical supplies to keep an army healthy and head out. In a barn outside of town I head in when I see movement, I spin and shoot another Survivor in the arm who then fires a Crossbow at me and misses I duck out as the Zeds pour in and Crossbow guy fights them off. Once it's over I apologise and explain I have medical supplies. He tells me he needs blood badly so I go in and start patching him up, before I've even started the blood transfusion he puts a bolt between my eyes.... Day 1 (6) I open my eyes and find myself on a beach, I Know I am near Komarovo and that the Zed Apoc is here and I have to survive. I am FURIOUS. The average life expectancy is 33 minutes and I suspect this is more due to the Survivors than the Zed I find a bicycle and fly towards Cherno, looting as I go. I leave with a Shotgun and Makarov and hit the sheds outside of town. Nothing here but flies. I head back into Cherno to tool up properly as I rushed through grabbing only ammo and guns. Back in the Supermarket I come up behind another survivor with a 16 slot backpack and a automatic rifle, I get the pistol out to pop him in the head as I need that backpack and his supplies as he's clearly cleaned out the place. He sees me and screams out "NO DON'T SHOOT, NO AMMO, and PLEASE DON'T KILL ME!! FRIENDLY, FRIENDLY” I curse myself for not just shooting him sooner but now I can't do it. Turns out he has a friend in the Church down the road with a broken leg and we head out to the hospital and gear up. We find and medic his friend up and head out of town making easy work of the Zeds and another survivor who tries to ambush us. I start to feel better, after a bad start I finally have a team and it really does make it easier and more fun. We hit the dreaded barns again and I tell them it's already been cleared, they say this is as good a place as any. I was going to ask them a good place for what but don't get the chance; they both open up on me with their rifles. Day 1 (7) I open my eyes and find myself on a beach, I Know I am near Solnichy and that the Zed Apoc is here and I have to survive. I am APOPLECTIC. I don't give a damn about life expectancy; I just know that anyone who crosses me has very little. It's getting Dark now which is Ideal, I am less likely to be seen and Survivors or either bunking down for the night or chasing the sun. Raiding Solnichy I get some survival gear, food and an Axe as well as a M1911A. Next is Berezino, as I head to the NW Airfield. Another survivor pelts through town on a Bicycle, could even be mine from Cherno but I stay hidden and let him pass dragging the Infected behind him. When I reach town I see a Bicycle dumped outside the Supermarket and head in. I hear rustling as a Survivor snoops about and quickly put two in the back of his head. His backpack is no bigger than mine and he has nothing of value except the bike which I take. I cut across country getting hopeless lost in my quest for the NW Airfield and spend hours cycling across openfields. The peace does something to sooth my soul and I eventually land up StarySoba. By this time I need food again so I hit the Supermarket again. Heading into town I hear the Zeds Growling but I just growl back, they don't bother me at all anymore, inconviniences rather than threats. It's survivors I'm watching out for. There is a hopper on the stairs in and seems to be stuck on a corpse, I can't be bothered going round so I pop a quick round in and drop him. Shouting from inside "WHO'S THERE! FRIENDLY??" I sigh and wish I had just gone round the back after all. I call back "Friendly" but get out of sight all the same and drift round. It's dark and they haven't popped any lights but I can make out two shapes hiding behind the checkout. They tell me they took fire from a sniper and their friend was taken out, they are waiting for him to get back. I check my weapons and weigh my options, and axe a pistol and an HE Grenade against two unknowns in cover. I suppose I've been too quiet so they call out to me again asking if I'm there. "Sure, I need food and supplies" "There is loads here, more than we can carry, our friend is dead in the doorway, you can carry his stuff and we'll get meet him!" Oh yeah sure and I bet his friend will be happy to just carry on without his gear once we rendezvous. "OK wait there I think I saw your sniper, stay in cover I'm coming in" I crawl up to their "friend" and see he's already been looted of weapons but has a Alice pack and lots of Medical and food supplies I can see now that these two have automatic rifles so I keep crawling past the corpse and behind cover. "Where did you get shot from because I'm sure I saw someone up towards the Church". As they start talking I arc the HE Grenade in a silent path to land behind the counter, they never knew what hit them. I leave the super market with an Alice Pack, all the tools I could ever want, food, drink, an AK with 8 Mags, Pistol with 7, Medical supplies and a Bicycle. I scarf any food I can't carry and I'm feeling pretty healthy as I make my way to the NW Airfield. Better tooled up than ever before and wondering why I ever through the infected were the problem. TL:DR I started this game Bright eyed and bushy tailed expecting a Left For Dead type team experience mixed with a persistant world. I soon found I wasn’t much more than a Zed myself, killing Survivors for the slightest of reason without remorse, the only difference between me and them I could make excuses for it, I needed their stuff or I felt threatened, me or them… Funny how things change.
