Well, to the first paragraph, I say lucky you, not all of us have the cash to spare so frivolously. Second paragraph, I completely agree.

What about when it's finished with development? What's the price going to be then? bla bla bla, how fantastically worded.

Okay, keep hammering down that road, I'll be ignoring you now because you're clearly too stupid to realise I acknowledged that you are technically correct when you say I bought ARMA 2 and played DayZ, yada yada, but anyone who's not got a stick up their ass will see that no, that's a dumb way to look at it.

I did donate a couple of pounds, I donated £20 when I bought ARMA2/CO. Eloquent. Well you've got the best position, you actually like ARMA 2 and I doubt you minded paying what you did for it. What about the vast majority of people who paid for ARMA2, but don't like it? I can write big, too! This is an idiotic stance. If there was an option to pay LESS for the ability to play ONLY DayZ, then I would have bought that. As it was, I was forced to buy ARMA 2, a game I do not want, and therefore hadn't purchased, if I wanted to play DayZ. While you are technically correct in saying I have only purchased ARMA 2 and ARMA 2: OA, you are realistically completely wrong. As said above, technically correct, yes, but still not a realistic stance. Same again, I feel I have paid for it already. I do agree it isn't his 'fault', but ethically, he really should do something about it. If he expects people to pay £20 to test/play an alpha, then shell out another £40 for a stand-alone game, he's as bad as EA/Ubisoft etc. Because 95% of the DayZ playerbase would NEVER have purchased ARMA2/CO if it wasn't for DayZ. The number may not be right, but it's an irrefutable fact that the large portion of the players are only playing DayZ. They made a pretty bad (in my opinion) game, which is reflected in the sales, and then one guy made a good mod. And it's not a case of choosing not to play ARMA2/OA, I have played it, I do not enjoy it. Well the difference there is that Half Life was an excellent game, and ARMA2/CO doesn't hold a candle to it. If ARMA2 had actually been a very good game, I would not expect to get DayZ standalone for free. And thus ends the longest quote train I've seen on a forum.

If you truly believe that, you're impressively naive. To think DayZ is just "an alpha mod" now is insane. It's brought 1 million sales of a game which was not selling in the slightest. DayZ is way more massive than the Alpha mod it started out as, and the plans for the future reflect this. Aside from the comfy bonus he'll no doubt be getting, the promotions that are foreseen, and the profits of DayZ when it does go full release? Yeah, no money at all. If they are going to sell it at full price (~£40 here in the UK) then it's gonna have to be absolutely perfect. And there is no way in hell people in the Arma office said "Hey, your mod has sold a million copies of the game, but we're not giving you ANY money to develop it further" then you, sir, are an idiot. If Rocket expects all 1 million of us to buy ARMA2 which funds development of DayZ standalone, then sell it for full price and pocket all the sales as profits then, wow, dick move. The fact is, I would entirely disagree. You are less entitled to DayZ free than I. And here's my logic: You purchased all that ARMA content because you wanted to play it. I HAD to purchase it to play DayZ, and I have not enjoyed any ARMA time I've played. When you purchased upon release, you covered production costs and profits for the development of ARMA2. When I purchased, my money went to development of DayZ. You can come back and say "Well, no, you bought ARMA and the money will go to Bohemia" then I refer to the reply I made above: "And there is no way in hell people in the Arma office said "Hey, your mod has sold a million copies of the game, but we're not giving you ANY money to develop it further" then you, sir, are an idiot." I never said I expected him to work for free. I bought ARMA 2 JUST for DayZ, that's where my money should come from. If they so desperately wanted DayZ to be a free to play mod, then they should have provided the engine and all the files to run it for free, and you shouldn't have had to buy ARMA2. Which is not possible, so it's not a stance they can take. An obvious solution, but easily exploited. I don't think there is a solution to the problem of "who bought ARMA 2 just for DayZ?".

So I don't doubt most of you have seen that DayZ is going standalone and will be following the minecraft ethos for updating and pricing. Now, I don't know about you guys, but this mod wasn't free for me. I paid £20 for ARMA2 and ARMA2: Operation Arrowhead and haven't played more than an hour of the actual game. All the time I've got on Steam was playing DayZ mod. My point here is this, people who purchased ARMA2 just to play DayZ shouldn't have to then buy DayZ when it goes standalone. How do you differentiate between people who purchased for DayZ and people who already had it? Difficult one, I know. You could set up a system where people provide proof of purchase after DayZ was released, and they get it for free. But that is incredibly time consuming. Another method is just having it free upon public release for a limited period of time. Or at a heavily discounted rate (£2.50-£5). To sum up it's not fair to expect people to pay for this game twice, and I don't want to. Any thoughts?

Ah, okay thanks for the proof. It just looked a bit suspicious that we "Lost Session" right as my brother clicked the right arrow to loot the M249. Pitch fork officially laid down.

  10. I wrote this guide for Reddit, thought I might port it across to here. Also if it's in the wrong section, feel free to move. I'm not normally on these forums (as you can tell by this being my first post) Original Post on Reddit I thought some people might be interested in a tutorial guiding them with idiot-proof instruction on how to launch Arma2 with the DayZ mod enabled. So without further ado, here's the guide (with .gifs!) First off, you want to navigate to C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\arma 2 operation arrowhead and rename the file "Arma2OA.exe". Doesn't really matter, just make sure it's different. I called mine "Arma2OAOLD.exe". Gif Guide 1 Now, navigate to C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\arma 2 operation arrowhead\Expansion\beta and copy the file "arma2oa.exe". Paste it in the main folder for ARMA 2. C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\arma 2 operation arrowhead Gif Guide 2 The next part is done in your Steam client. Right click on ARMA2: Operation Arrowhead and click "Properties" at the bottom. Then click on "Set Launch Options" Gif Guide 3 Paste in this: -beta=Expansion\beta;ca;Expansion\beta\Expansion -mod=@DayZ;ca -cpuCount=4 -exThread=7 -maxMem=8192 -nosplash There are a few things you may need to change depending on your system. * -cpuCount=# This tells the game how many physical cores your CPU has. If you don't know, you can find out your processor name like this and enter the name into Google. * -exThread=# This tells the game how many threads your CPU is running on. Follow the same instructions above if you're not sure on thread count. * -maxMem=#### This tells the game how much RAM your computer has. Enter 2048 for 2GB, 4096 for 4GB, 8192 for 8GB, can you see the pattern? Once you've done that it's time to launch the game! Click Play on ARMA2: Operation Arrowhead and a small box should pop up. Click "Launch ARMA2: Combined Operations" and click play. Gif Guide 4 The game will then boot up with the DayZ Mod activated, and you can join right into servers. Hope this helps some people out. Also, if you're getting poor performance due to a slow Hard Drive, check out OhiSeven's guide on How to make a RAMDisk. This can still be compatible with Steam launch, all you need to do is add the drive name the RAMDisk gets set as in the launch options. For example, if your RAM disk is called "Local Disk ( H: )" then change the part of the code -mod=@DayZ;ca to -mod=H:\@DayZ;ca
