Loot spawns are checked and eventually refreshed every time you are in a certain proximity. Try looking in better places...barns, warehouses, cities...etc. -
Incredibly bad luck with food/drink can spawns

Cans of food are so common, between them and finding matches I find it hard to starve to death but I do keep a canny eye on the meters. When I have cooked meats and find myself either looting food off of zombies or in a town, I'll eat the canned goods before resorting to the meats. Farmer zombies have food/drink. VERY helpful tip right there. -
No this adds an amazing element of trust and stealth to the game. If you can get away with stealing items, you deserve them.

Get a vehicle, get gas, drive to the spots.

Doesn't make sense that my footsteps can attract 10 + zombies in a 50m radius but a bell that can be heard a city over doesn't get any loving.

I would use M1911 in town, L85A2 on outskirts and MK48 before approaching.

I have the required 5.56 ammunition STANAG but the gun wont load it. Do I require STANAG SD for a SD weapon?

Making an NPC-run facility is not going to happen. This game is all about interaction and the psychological social aspect of communication with each other.

Day Z endgame suggestion (Warning: long post)

"In Day Z, we really only have one tool: guns. " Totally false. I've read the rest of the post and I must say that even suggesting there is an end-game destiny in this game is completely false. You can be killed by one bullet from pretty much any gun. Having the gear doesn't mean you " win " or have reached the pinnacle point of the game...as you have to try to rescue what survivors you can and gain their trust. This whole post about Crafting hubs...Safezones...is exactly what DayZ is trying NOT to be. I could go on.. -
Sounds good so far man....i like the police skin idea. A couple more requests for the pile would be.... Addons and equipment for weapons Main weapon sling Wild life animals in forests Batteries for NVG, Flashlights and others Spray canisters to write messages to survivors or set a trap. All of these were previously mentioned.
