Low zombie count/low loot across servers
oktyabr replied to Mezzanine's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Two of us spent an hour just running around Elektro the other night. Saw maybe a half dozen other survivors in town during that time too. Gear wasn't respawning and once the first dozen or so zombies were killed no more seemed to be spawning either... or if they did it was like one or two every half hour. I remember when you would see that zombie counter spike over 1000+ fairly often! Now THAT was DayZ! -
And making the map magically smaller will NOT increase how many players a server can have, not in the slightest.

Did anyone buy Arma 2 solely for this mod?
oktyabr replied to billyangstadt's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
The Arma series is just one of those things I tend to buy as soon as they come out, mostly for their modding potential. I used to play Domination a bit but once I got my first taste of DayZ it's all I play anymore leaving BF3, RO:HoS, Crysis (and mods), and even Minecraft on a dark, lonely part of my HDD collecting virtual dust ;) At least five people have purchased for just this mod based on my recommendation. Many, many, many people (likely thousands) bought just for this mod. A2:CO rocketing into the top five best sellers on Steam doesn't lie. For those of you that have NOT purchased yet and are perhaps reading this thread as research... Be advised that this mod is still an "ALPHA"! That's pre-beta even. It's not perfect (yet) and things change constantly. As a mod I've read the occasional post from players who feel disappointed for one reason or another, like they got ripped off. It's ALPHA and comes with NO promises or guarantees! YMMV -
Why this mod is the best thing to happen to PC gaming
oktyabr replied to jagdfalke@gmail.com's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
I'm an old guy and a life long gamer. There have always been revolutionary, ground breaking games and like always... they don't just pop up every day. I remember pumping a quarter into one of the first Pong games I ever saw. Early 80's brought me my first computer game... ATC "Air Traffic Controller". The graphics were simple text used as moving icons on the screen but the game play was complex, intense and definitely revolutionary. Shortly after came the video game "Gauntlet" (Green Elf is about to die... ;) ) Pretty sure this was my first taste of truly co-op multiplayer gaming. Years later I discovered MUDs. These are the grand daddies of all MMO's out there today and DayZ reminds me more of some of them than anything else... huge, persistent worlds, lots of players (several hundred are not uncommon), very sand box like, and some with brilliant PVP. Pure text, like reading a book that writes itself with you as a character. Many are still popular after all these years... Google "Realms of Despair" for a good example. Counter Strike. This was the first team death match game that actually had a purpose beyond just racking up kills. To me, it was quite revolutionary. Battlefield 1942. Releasing a free demo like they did was incredibly brilliant, innovative and really defined that sort of business model for the genre. Servers were popping up like weeds everywhere, much like DayZ... just to play the demo! The ARMA series and relatives. Although I knew it defined the sand box milsim genre and had huge potential I never knew how much until later ;) Minecraft. Who knew that a game could actually be outrageously popular without having bleeding edge graphics and a million cut scenes!?! (I did!) And then we have DayZ! I think a lot of the current problem is that game companies are trying to take advantage of the inexperience of the younger generations. Most of them (some of you) don't remember when a simple game could make you day dream at school/work about playing it. When real gameplay was all a game had to go on because most of the eyecandy and other sugary frosting didn't exist or was at most very primitive. Having kids myself I know that they have grown to expect different things from their games than I did when I was their age. When a game company nails something that sells they try to beat every last dollar out of it. DayZ is one of those few examples that just because a game might be a best seller or the most popular, does not that it automatically has the best game play. -
EXACTLY! This isn't about game mechanics or balance, it's about his personal story, me thinks. Newbs die on the beach because they are either killed by other newbs, for whatever reasons, or by try hards (who already have meds... at least the ones I've killed) wanting some target practice.
-
I was actually offended by the way he tried to reinforce his argument on the premise that those on the beach were just helpless little lambs, new to the world, and that the big bad killer (who's afraid to *risk* a hospital visit or trading session with strangers) would be sadly taking advantage of them for meds or whatever. The fact is if you are LUCKY that newly spawned survivor will be completely new to the game in which case you could probably just convince him to give them to you. In reality even experienced killers DIE in this game and guess what... some of them are pretty good with a Mak PM too ;) I actually find it much more *rewarding* to take the *risk* and kill some over equipped bandit instead. He's likely got the meds I need and look! More STANAG clips and that tool kit I was looking for too!

Moving this to suggestions.
-
I originally said "yes" but I've seen some improvement in the humanity system and think things are starting to balance out. For the record I rarely shoot first at a bandit just because he is a bandit. And yet more often then not they are the ones to immediately jump to aggression. Is this out of a perceived self defense or because those still running around with bandit skins really are "bad guys" for the most part? Or some of both? I'm not sure but in my opinion they are working better today then they were when this thread was started. Would still like to see more skins some day.

Keep it civil guys. Do not turn this into one of those over done PVP arguments. -
Suggestions to solve the biggest issues
oktyabr replied to super pretendo's topic in DayZ Mod Suggestions
Some good suggestions in this thread so it's getting moved to the SUGGESTIONS section. Keep replies ON TOPIC (yes, that's a warning). If you want to *politely* discuss PVP in general there is ONE thread for that back in general discussion. Thanks. -
This is the SUGGESTIONS forum and the original post was one, like it or not. However it's devolved into yet another general PVP discussion thread so I'm closing it. The general discussion section of these forums has a dedicated thread at the top of the page that everyone should read and then post, if there is still anything to add to it.

3rd Person View, why I support it, and why it should stay in game
oktyabr replied to tearran's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
I don't care what mode people choose to play as long as it doesn't damage the game I'm trying to play. One of my best mates prefers to jump back and forth between TPS and FPS all the time when we are on "regular" servers... I stick with FPS only. As for the logic of the OP? You know in the original Arma 2 that first person is considered the default mode? That the difficulty level that lets you use 3rd person is called "Cadet"? That cadet = trainee, beginner, easy, n00b? It was included in Arma for training, particularly in the use of vehicles, and for commander mode against AI. It was never intended for PVP use but if that's what floats your boat and you can find a server that will let you do it, fine. -
Gathering the parts needed to build a trading post, like rebuilding a helicopter or other vehicle, is hardly "easy mode". It takes group cooperation and often a lot of fire power to make happen successfully. Fortunately the game is starting to include things such as razor wire that can be placed where you want. This will certainly make a player-driven trading post easier.

Thanks for illustrating this exploit.

I'm closing this thread before it devolves into another shit fest. @D4rkWolf: I respect what you tried to do here and hopefully some of the posts in this thread will continue to make your PR mission better. However I highly recommend you either post a PR contact email and/or link to the appropriate Legion forums in another thread or at least include them in your forum signature. Thanks.

I still think a "forgive" option would help a lot, removing the humanity penalty and maybe even rewarding the forgiver with a slight boost in their own as well. The lack of working DC is really causing problems. Yesterday I found myself in the middle of a pretty wicked and stealthy shootout and all I wanted to do was get the hell out of the crossfire. A bandit that didn't see me at first came charging through the woods shooting at another survivor behind me. I knew the bandit would likely have shot me once he stepped on top of me so I shot first (something I almost never do), killing him. I got up from prone and was shot in the back by the other survivor who also didn't know I was in the middle of things. I was dead, he apologized saying he thought I was the bandit, which I accepted, but he still took a humanity penalty. If I could have forgiven him I would have. This is just one example out of several that could have been avoided with working DC or at least mended with a "forgive" option.

I think Shaman9000 means he alt-F4'd during PVP

Name one other major Arma *mod* that is strictly PVP? If you can actually think of one is TPS used there as well?
