Point taken.

I didn't think any army still used helmets signifying who is a medic, as the traditional red cross on a white background tends to be a handy aiming point for marksmen - I thought they were signified by their arm bands or badges. IF the developers followed that train of thought, if remember, then perhaps sticky patches/decals could be added to a helmet to add the red cross & white background to it. But who is to say that the Chernorus forces didn't have their medics wear helms with the red cross on it? I'd be happy with it in game in some form or other.

This is certainly an idea I can get behind. Would be a very characterful addition to the map and an absolute deathtrap to explore if a 'gang' ever set themselves up inside. Wouldn't like it to be absolutely massive though, maybe large enough to house a single submarine (which could either be 'wrecked' inside the pen or on the coast nearby). I reckon at that inlet north-east of Svetlojarsk. In addition I'd like to see a naval harbour added in, with a small military vessel. Maybe Svetlojarsk could be modified slightly to include a small military base (for naval personnel) and include a minesweeper or a coastal patrol vessel in the harbour or floating out in Guba bay.

Regular: 1 Giving out free food in Kamyshovo a new spawn attacked me with his fists and, in my panic, I put him down with 9 5.56 calibre bullets from my M4. Hardcore: 1 Sat atop the small rise immediately NE of Elektro, on a bench admiring the sunset for 5 minutes after bumping into a couple of bandit hunters. A newly spawned woman runs at me and starts hacking at me with a knife, so my axe met her head. Low kill count for 71 hours so far...

That's peculiar. What condition are the headlamps? All of the ones I've tried (Pristine & worn - I won't pick up ones that are damaged or worse) work fine with batteries that are damaged or better.
-
With rain affecting clothing/equipment just around the corner, I'd rather like to see this sort of thing included - wrapping up bits of kit in plastic bags so keep them dry in my pack/pouches.

Thank you for enlightening me! I hadn't realised that I was pretending to have fun, I thought I was actually, you know, enjoying myself but you've laid it out before my eyes so I can see that I've wasted all those hours... They do if you put a battery in them.

What civ style weapons would you like to see?

As a really-not-serious one, behold!; The matchlock musket! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2KTS8PQ06Qo As an English Civil Wars reenactor I've fired matchlocks on several occasions and I have to say it is a lot of fun. More so than firing a shotgun. Totally impractical for DayZ, especially as you probably wouldn't hit anything beyond 30 yards, and the colossal noise would attract every zombie & bandit in Chernarus* but hey, it would amuse me! *An exaggeration. -
Irony. I'm not so sure, really, not completely sold on the idea. For the amount of work I imagine it would require there are surely other things worth including more but at the same time, as I think about it, I'd quite like this to an extent - not to the point of morons running around with a pistol in each hand trying to replicate something they've seen in films (hopefully if it was ever included trying to 'dual wield' pistols would end badly). I do like the idea of having, for example, a first aid kit in one hand and your pistol in the other whilst performing a handover without leaving yourself unguarded.

Yew Longbow! Actually I am semi-serious about this. I hate modern bows with all the counter-weights and pulley systems and rubbish all over them. I much prefer the simplicity of the long yew bow and would love to have one in DayZ to take hunting. Might be a bit 'overkill' considering the draw weights involved. As far as firearms go, probably a W W Greener Martini action shotgun (chambered in 12 bore, unlike the ones police units had which were 14 bore); -
3 New pistols in DayZ Standalone Experimental

Personally I'd rather like the M1911 on my avatar but I do wish it was an 'older' type, rather than a modern version. Wouldn't mind seeing the Browning Hi-Power included at some point. He said 'some branches', indicating more than one part of the US military, and 'some units' as in several military formations. Apparently among the US Army Special Operations units the 1911 is still used, so it's not just the USMC who still use it. -
Hopefully in the future hats will help to keep characters heads warm & dry, thus helping to keep them healthy. It's not all about protection against weapons you know. As for the t-shirts, they're meant to be 'useless' - that way when your character has freshly spawned you're forced straight off the bat to go and find clothing with pockets to store stuff. Not against there being more 'feminine' clothing for female characters but if it's impractical stuff then it should be impractical within DayZ.

If a zombie apocalypse did happen then I imagine that I, with my luck, and anyone who is prepared for a 'zombie apocalypse'*, will be among the first to become zombies. If by some quirk I was a survivor then I'd frankly give myself 1/10 chances of surviving (due to my physical health and my genetic allergy to gluten, barley & rye foodstuffs - see; Coeliac Disease**). At least if another survivor found my body there'd be some good kit to take away with them. *Fate loves irony. **As an example, if I found a shop with, say, with packets of crisps for the taking, they often contain gluten-based ingredients in the flavouring.

Taken several steps back with equipment and gear. I collected a few bits for my friend, who has just started playing DayZ, and intended to give him my TTsKO, a big rucksack and my M4. Rather a lot of kit gathered later, I kept tripping over it all and didn't want it to go to waste, I managed to get to him and drop it all off. In the process I dumped all the bits I didn't want anymore and have gone 'back to basics' as it were. No backpack, no rifle-sized weapon, no melee weapon (until I find a knife), just one yellow protective case, an FN .45 and a dire need for a half-decent hat (probably a beanie).

Yes, yes, jolly good. There are other threads for that, this one is about helicopters.

That's true, the SMLE bit was dropped in favour of it simply being 'Rifle No.1 Mk.III*'* - apologies for mixing the two up. *Or whichever marque you wish to refer to. I prefer the abrupt appearance the muzzle cap gives. It's a 'beautifugly' weapon and I like it more than the other rifles of it's time. Whilst I like the No.4 Mk.I as well, the No.1 Mk.III just does it for me. Also sword bayonets.

Feel it's appropriate... Personally I don't think there should be any ammunition counters - should have to unload to check for all guns.

This is why we should use ArmA III's Engine.
rapier17 replied to Lordocalot's topic in General Discussion
I wouldn't have purchased the SA if it was in ArmA III's engine because my computer has trouble with it. DayZ runs rather well on my machine, which admittedly is getting on a bit, but it looks better and is smoother than I could get ArmA III to run. -
I wouldn't mind the presence of helicopters if they were incredibly rare. As in finding a helicopter, well done you managed to find one! Now find the bits and you're going to need trucks to carry the parts, if you find them, and it'll require a lot of maintenance and fuel to get it, and keep it, running. I'd love to be sneaking around my usual haunts only to hear a helicopter flitting about the sky and watch it fly by (from concealment) thinking 'Well there's something you don't see every day!'.
-
To be picky, it's an SMLE No.1 Mk.III*, which would be more fitting as it was more widely used across the globe. Whilst as Durrhunter says this map covers around 400 years of history I disagree that the chances of several Lee-Enfield's turning up in Chernarus would be slim - weapons move great distances across the globe depending on where they're being purchased from, transported to and who they're sold on to - guns don't just 'disappear' when wars end or they're replaced by newer guns, they're often sold on because if someone is willing to buy them, why destroy them? The Lee-Enfield is also still actively in use in some parts of the world - the Indian Police still use them, having just relegated them to training purposes in the last couple of years.

I'd like to see things such as shoulder/courier bags, such as old gas mask bags; Swedish example; (I have one of these, could easily fit a couple of tins of beans or a handgun or a piece of rolled up clothing inside) Maybe items like old map cases, press camera bags (to go with the Press Vest), maybe even womens handbags as a joke (it's still a container you could carry things with!).

If You Could Add Any Gun To DayZ, What Would You Add And Why?
rapier17 replied to leefriendfield's topic in General Discussion
They're still in use around the world especially because, and this is one of the reasons why I would add it, you can make your own bullets for it (crafting etc!). Plus it's a rather powerful mid-range rifle that would be unique - having to load after each shot but rather accurate & a one-hit kill weapon*. Also; AK47 or Cz58. One of the two. Probably the Cz58. *During the Anglo-Zulu War one .45cal bullet from a Martini-Henry was observed passing through several Zulu's before being embedded in the shield of another one. -
The Anti-Game - Why DayZ will stay a crappy game
rapier17 replied to tommes's topic in General Discussion
Says you. My sense of 'time/fun ratio' is obviously different but then I enjoy doing things people might find dull. For example in Rise of Flight I will only play as an Observer/Aerial Gunner for my friends. This will often entail spending several hours of an evening looking at a map and working out where we are, where we're going, noting the wind direction/speed for bombing, making sure we're at the correct height for reconnaissance etc. Another example is from when we used to play on the ArmAII 'TAW' co-op servers - I'd spend entire evenings in the back of a helicopter, reading maps (I sense a theme here), finding routes of entry & exit to the target areas, using terrain to avoid anti-aircraft fire. Boring to most people but what I got out of it was something else - enjoyment from the tension. How could there be tension you ask? In Rise of Flight I was forever having to switch between checking the ground to correlate it with the map and watching the skies for the tell-tale dot of an enemy aircraft. There was always the worry, the fear, that a Fokker Dr.I would drop from out of the sun and attack us - if I didn't keep a sharp eye open then we'd get butchered. So whilst fulfilling my duties, if you will, in the rear cockpit I had to be aware of where we were and what was around us. Was that dot an Axis aircraft or an Entente one? Did we nail that plane or has it just dived away and may be back to get us? Are we even still over our lines or the enemy lines? It's easy to lose track of where you are in a running aerial gun battle with the planes flying about all over the place. In the helicopter navigator example, the tension came from working under pressure - a lot of the target zones had lethal anti-aircraft weapons and I would have to plot routes, using the terrain, and talk the pilot through it quickly and clearly to make sure we got our cargo of troops safely to the target without being destroyed by a Shilka, for example. Those heart-pounding moments of terror more than made up for the long periods of doing little but watching the map (I like map reading anyway - quite good at it). The tension I get in DayZ is knowing that where ever I am in Chernorus, there could be someone watching me down the sights of their gun. It could be as I cross a field, or navigate a wood, move through a village or town. I have to be vigilant because I know that there is a greater chance of being shot on sight than of interacting. It creates the tension that propels me through the game and keeps me playing because I want that man vs. elements & 'nasty' people' fear. I don't want my character to be shot down but it's a risk I have to take if I want to keep my chap fed, watered and in good health. A great way to increase the feeling of surviving is to limit your inventory. Get rid of those large rucksacks and stick to the courier bag or no bag at all. Carry only the absolute essentials so you're forced to go into villages/towns to keep on surviving and keep going. I don't go in for gun fights because out of personal pride, I want to keep my avatar alive. It depends on what you want to get out of DayZ. I want to keep my avatar alive for as long as possible. That's my goal, to 'survive' in a world where the environment and the other players are against me. -
I can only see people using 'missions' as a means of 'griefing' others - for example your idea of finding a little girl zombie & putting it out of it's 'misery'. Unless the location of the child zombie was randomised (which would require the mission structure to account for the random nature of where the zombie child would be), you'd have people camping where the zombie child would spawn to a. kill it and deny you your objective and b. to snipe you. It would also require time and coding which I personally think would be far better spent on other things, such as new mechanics to improve the overall gameplay/survival aspect. Make your own missions & storyline.
