Could Day Z be a successful standalone game?
Rek Seven posted a topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
I’ve been playing Day Z for a while now and my current character is about 3 weeks old. I think it’s a brilliant “experience” but I’ve started to wonder if it’s a good game... I was watching The Walking Dead last night and wondered what i would actually do in a zombie apocalypse. I came to the conclusion that, as social beings, our main goal would be to either find a surviving civilisation or create a new one... Because without people, what is the point? Currently, the main activities in Day z are searching for loot and killing players. You may disagree but i don’t think people would be murdering the last remaining survivors in a zombie apocalypse, without good reason. So why is murder so rampant in Day Z? Other than the obvious “because it’s a game”, I believe it’s because zombies aren’t enough of a threat and they are not as satisfying to kill. This all leads me to feel that Day Z, in its current form, does not provide a good enough experience to be a mass selling game with longevity. So what would make this a successful game IMO? In-game ability to find groups – Radio towers, flair guns, notes, etc. Construction – ability to build a camp with high walls, watch towers, lighting, farm land for crops and cattle, etc More zombies – probably not possible on the current engine but the threat from zombies should come from the number of them not the claw to the face that has a chance for breaking your legs. The AI could use some improvements to. -

it´s getting silly... could someone just close this topic? I'm afraid that threads don't get locked just because someone has a different opinion to you. This is how the adult world works. If you don't like the the subject matter, you are welcome to leave. However, i don't agree with "Thestoryteller01". This game does not need a single player mode. There are plenty of good games out there already that provide that experience. Player interaction is what makes this game interesting and i would like to see more tolls that enable us to group up easier and different goals for a group to accomplish. -

I wouldn't say it was a pointless question. There are a lot of great suggestions out there but i want to know what you guys think are vital aditions for the game to be a mass market sucess. -
Would it be a good idea to have "deathmatch" style servers?

i'd like it if some servers were 25 bandits vs 25 survivors. -

I agree that it has potential to be a best seller but lets say rockets cleared up all the bugs and released it tomorrow, do you really think the game, in it's current form, would sell over 3 million (what the industry considers a success)? -
There should be easier ways to group up

Kind of a douchey reply but whatever. Firstly, i've been playing eve online for a couple years so i know all about the theory of creating your own experience ;) , but this is just something developers say when they lack the resources or creativity to put cool shit in their games as ultimatly, the player will all ways be limited by the tool (or lack there of) the developers provide. The question was, what does this game need to make it a successful stand alone game? I don't need your advice on how to play the game. It's easy to sit on your hardcore gamer pedestal and criticize others for being noobs, lacking imagination or having a life. If you believe that day z would be a mass market success in it's current form, you are entitled to that opinion but my opinion would be that you are a fool to think so. Perhaps i didn't make it clear initially but my main point is that the zombies need to be more of a threat. Not by increasing their damage or speed but by increasing the number of them so that we see massive zombie hordes roaming around. -
the ravings of a madman?

But i like having lots of ammo :(

Why cant I make steaks out of other Players?
Rek Seven replied to arx's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Only if it effects the appearance of the player. I want to be able to identify cannibals and punish them for their crimes. -
Anything that gives you an unfair advantage is a exploit but exploiting the game in a way that effects another players experience is the worst kind. People how do this will eventually ruin the game for everyone because they will force the developers to place harsh restrictions/punishments on us all. Day Z has many problems and although alt- f4 may not be "the" problem, it is certainly one of the biggest.

Is there a way that you could make it where if the character is attacked, it restarts the 5/10 second idle timer?

You're a real rambow  Shoot him in the head next time.

Seems that we turn into the things we set out to destroy.
Rek Seven replied to Hendrix27's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Yeah but that that person might respawn and say "fuck this, i'm killing everyone i see." and then they see you and you die. Maybe that wouldn't of happened if you let him be... -
I see your point. Actually I didn't even know you could pack the tent up again. I can't wait until we can set up structures with watchtowers and stuff. Thanks to everyone who replied.
-
If DayZ was ever made into a stand alone game, would you be open to a single player experience (eventually) being included?
Rek Seven replied to xPandaHunterx's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Nah, there isn't enough to it for it to be a single player game. Day Z reminds me a lot of Fallout 3 but while i was playing fallout i always wished that there were real people like me in the game (i.e. multiplayer) for the unpredictability and challenge. I would rather all future resources be devoted to improving the game we have now because there aren't many games like this but there are plenty of single player zombie/horror games on the market already. -

If i see some noob running around with his hatchet and patrol pack on i'll let him go. But if i see a well armed group or individual heading my way or holding something i want, i'll shoot them because i know they would do it to me. If this happened IRL, we would establish communities and maybe even wear so find of uniform to identify friends... Until something like that is implemented, 99.9% of people will shoot on site. -
You misunderstand montival. The servers don't mess up the tents but i come across all abandoned tents all the time one servers. (Does anyone know if that increases lag / frame rate /load times?) I originally thought that tents were tied to players and that when i saw one, it meant that the player was online and i had to be cautious but it turns out that i was wrong and that i can just go storming in like a madman and take what i want. WIN :D I found a camp last night and got a bunch of cool stuff and stole a car. Then the server kicked me and i lost said car :( But as Humbabwe said, it will get better so i will just deal with it for now. It's not like it's a massive issue for me anyway. I was just wondering if there was a better alternative to the current implementation.
-
See my first reply.
-
Why are you okay with people dying and their tent still being there so that the player is effectively risking nothing? Isn't this supposed to be a perma-death game? It could be made so that your tent stays on the server you logged off on until you log back on to another server. Again, i have no problem with my stuff being vulnerable. I just don't like the idea of having to play on the same server all the time... But i guess it has some benefits, thinking about it.
-
kill 1000 zombies to unlock the final level.
-
No whitemouse you are wrong. I don't what to horde my stuff. Infact i have never even pitched a tent. It's just that with the current instabillity of the game and the servers, i don't like the idea of being tied to a server. Plus, lets say the items were tied to the player, they would still be at risk of being stolen while you are online. By your rationel, your character should just lie down and sleep when you log off instead of disapearing from the server. WavezZ, i see your point on the vehicle thing but it could potential work if the spawn mechanics were tweaked or the game simply informed you that the maximum number of vehicles for that server had been reached and as a result, your vehicle could not be loaded this time... But yeah, tents would work.
-
Hmmm this is a very strange mechanic. Why wouldn't vehicles be saved to the character the same way your inventory is? I think the developers need to make it like that if possible.
