We were not able to do that on our private server. We assumed that the items were ruined, either way thanks for the update Please note we play on xbox.

While using our private server, we have found that cars we are repairing simply vanish mid game. We repaired two cars, one needed one wheel and the other needed two, when we found the wheels and returned to the vehicles, they had dissappeared. Does anyone know if there is a way to stop these cars randomly vanishing? We had placed a large amount of items in each boot to attempt "lock" the vehicle on the map but obviously this doesn't work. Thanks in advance fellow survivors

You can only take items from dead zombies, you are not able to take clothing items. I.e. if the zombie is wearing it, you will not be able to take it.

Use the Nitrado application on your PC or Tablet, it will allow you access to manage the server, time acceleration, restart times etc.
