    Romero Zombie vs Rage Infected

I don't know, personally I would love to see the Zombies acting like Zombies, not as simply humans with some sort of virus that makes them superhuman with a taste for flesh.Though if that's the intent for this game, then fair enough, but don't refer to them as Zombies or Zeds as that gives the wrong impression, the 28 days later style infected are not Zombies, they are simply humans infected with a virus, and that shows with the fact they can starve to death within a matter of a few months. Now if you are wanting them to be actual Zombies, I feel the ones from the OP's little vid would work perfectly. They shamble rather than sprint, but can only be stopped with a direct head shot, anything less and they simply keep coming. The real threat and indeed horror behind Zombies is the way they work, the fact they are a slow moving wave of death that will shamble towards any living thing they see until they have consumed it, only by destroying the "brain" will they ever cease. Now when I say wave, I do indeed mean wave, a large group of them, not simply 2-3. As for people saying slower zombies may for less of a threat when you stand there with guns and such, that is not always the case. Lets say you have an AK, 30 rounds left. Now you are on the verge of starving and have reached a town, in that town are around 40 Zombies, what do you do? Sure if you're a very good shot you can take down 30 of them, but that would still leave 10 of them that are going to be heading straight for you. Would you risk firing off that first shot knowing you would be unable to kill all of them? I know I'd still much rather try to sneak around them still. Now I know this may not be possible to do with the current engine but I would hope that the ArmA 3 engine would be able to cope. Besides which, if they shamble indoors they should also shamble outside. I've been in a barn that's been huge and still they shamble towards me even though they still have the freedom around them they would in an outside space. Also who here doesn't make their way to the nearest house when they aggro more than 3 "Zeds" to have them shamble to take them down? And that's while body shots can still Kill them. So I say have them all shamble like a proper Zombie but have head shots needed to "kill" them. Plus higher numbers of them would be grand.

    Pending Update: Build 1.7.2

Does anyone know if Rockets planning on adding a fix for the rate at which Zeds respawn around you so quickly in this update? ( Yes I did check the OP and didn't notice it in the list which is why I am asking if there has been any word on if he will be adding that fix before the updates release.)

Which T-Shirt design would you buy?

I'd actually really like to see the "I Survived the DayZ Alpha" shirt up for sale for a limited time before the end of the Alpha, perhaps with a need for a forum account to be able to purchase it. Just so those of us (and yes I know I'm a fairly late comer to it) who have lived and loved the game through all the bugs, have a little something to say "Fuck yeah, I was there man!"

    Shoot on Sight

I'm still fairly new to the game, and have only had 2 friendly interactions with other players, and I'm sure that was because they were weaponless, hell I even ran from the building and left one guy because I knew there was a shotgun in the back corner and assumed he'd shoot me once he got it. But yes, most of my interactions with other players have been made up of me trying to see if they are friendly and then being shot in the face. Yet I would not wish that removed from the game as it would reduce the "fear" experience a great deal. I mean take yesterday for example. I'd just found a new shotgun, replaced my LE with it. Then I hear the sound of Zeds approaching the barn at great speed, another survivor runs in and heads behind the crates (I would assume looking for a weapon as he had none) So, being the nice chap I am, I kill the two Zeds that were on his tail. I then call out over the mic to see if he's okay or if he needs help, then BAM! He comes from behind the crates and shoots me in the face. Was I a little annoyed? Sure. Did I think he was a dick? Sure. But the fact he is free to be that dick and do that is part of what makes this mod great. So yes, even if you take away the fact that PvE servers would be exploited to all hell in order to gain the best gear and then go fuck shit up on a PvP one. Just think about what you would be taking away from the game. One of the best things about this mod is the freedom, remove that and you loose a lot in my opinion.

    Zombie respawn rate?

So I just managed to sneak into the barn on the outskirts of Cherno and like a fool aggroed a Zed just as I got to the door. I made my way up the stairs and squeezed off a round from my AK, sure enough 18 others from the near by area come running in. I kill them all and think right then, the place should be clear now, I snoop around the barn, gather a few bits of loot and a couple of heat packs from the Zeds for those colds nights in the woods alone. Then when I go to leave I see 4 more Zeds shambling around outside, I leave through the other exit and head on into the stables where I'm spotted by a passing Zed, I head back into the barn and down him, then another 21 of his little undead friends come charging in. So I ask, is that the usual respawn rate on the Zeds around a small group of buildings?

    Worth getting Arma II: CO?

Derp question but where are these high res textures people talk about? Are they included in the DLC like PMC etc? If so I've had them for like a year already They are included in the full version of ArmA 2. They remove the HD textures along with the campaign for the free version. Sadly the only way you can get these HD textures is to purchase the full game for £15. I'd gladly buy them if they were sold separately at a much reduced price, I have no interest in the campaign what so ever, I simply want my DayZ game time to look as good as it can. Also there is talk that the HD character textures are from the various DLC that was released for ArmA 2 but I'm not sure. I know HD textures for the world itself comes from the full version of ArmA 2.

    Why do -you- kill?

So yeah, I'm still pretty new to the mod/game in general, joined the night before 1.7.1 so I'm very green and haven't had "much" interaction with other players yet. So yeah, I'm still getting to grips with the various parts of the game. But I am just curious, what reasoning is behind you killing others personally? I ask because I've been watching a fair few youtube vids and I found a high number of people not only killing for supplies from survivors, but running around trololol killing. So I guess I'm just curious to see how many bandits are playing as Bandits, and how many are just killing for the lullz of it all and to rack up more numbers in their counter.
  9. Hey there, this worked great for me. I can finally run it through Steam rather than the Six Launcher. The only thing I've noticed is that when I launch the game via Steam (with this launch parameter), in the expansions widow, it lists ArmA 2. While when I launch with the Six Launcher it lists it as ArmA 2: Free (yes I am running it with the free version of ArmA 2 at the moment). I have noticed that the menus run a lot smoother with it listed as ArmA 2: Free. So I guess my question is, is there an edit that can be made to your listed parameter to do this also? Oh and where on your parameter would I add the no splash option? Yes all very Noobish I know, but then, I am a Noob.

    Why do -you- kill?

See this is the thing. I'd like to think I'm a nice chap who wouldn't kill another survivor but instead try to team up and make it through the zombie infested world we find ourselves in, but I just know that if I see someone with a weapon, I am more than likely to try and kill them before they can kill me and take mine. Finding my first AK has made me a lot more twitchy than I was while I didn't have a weapon, and the thought of someone taking it from me, well that's not to appealing at all. It's one of those things where I don't want to become a Bandit, but I see you in front of me with a gun, you're now the number one threat to my life there is. I didn't really have this mentality before, but now I have my AK in hand, I sort of see it as I'm running around with a large target. So yeah, I totally get the people who have spent their time gathering and collecting their nice gear shooting without question for fear of loosing it, hell I'm starting to think like that and I've only got an AK. I think the fact I'm playing Solo adds to that sort of mind set though. I guess I'm glad to see more of you with that mind set that the killing just for the fuck of it all, as tbh I've been sniped a few times not long after spawning and while clearly without a weapon of any kind, and that just sort of made me thing, whats the point, there's nothing to gain and you're so far off and hidden it wasn't like I was going to spot you and flash light you to death.
  11. I love these little story's! Reading what you call out over voice chat cracks me up. Please, please start recording your play time in case something like this happens again, I'd love to be able to watch that shit!
  12. So, I jumped onto a server last night to try the new .5 patch as it has solved the majority of the issues everyone was having. It's all going well, I'm sneaking around, doing much better than when the zombies had super detection. Still found no weapon other than a melee, but that was a mix of me not knowing the right direction to head in to have the best chance at some loot and seeming to get into town just after a small group twice in a row (different towns, different groups). Through my own fault of turning away from the monitor to answer my girl friend, one of the Zeds I could hear near by spotted me, a few swings of my trusty axe and he's down, but I took a few hits before he dropped. I bandage myself up and set on my way, all of a sudden I'm three levels of visibility higher than I was just. I assume I was standing, which i wasn't. I assume it could be how close I was to the road, so I wander back the way I came into the grass but no, still three levels higher that I was when I was just here in the exact same position. The only difference being I'd take a heavy hit to my blood. So this leads me to my question... Does your condition have any effect on how sneaky you are at any given moment? So as, would a crouched person with full blood be less detectable than a person with say 4k blood in the exact same position/location?

    Another pretty nooby question here.

Hmm... I wonder why my icon showed me a three levels higher than I was before the attack.

Please Help with Arma II Free Install!

If you're getting it through steam, hit up ArmA 2 and then click "get demo", that's the free version. It's how I've got it working but I will say if you have the spare £15 then buy ArmA 2 because your textures will look like shit. I'm currently debating if I will have the spare cash come the beginning of next month to purchase it just so my textures improve, yes they are that bad.

IF this was an actual game...

    - Game purchase only. (Guild Wars style) Nobody needs yet another monthly fee. Microtransactions only work if it's for cosmetic things such as skins. Buying actual Gear (Weapons, large backpack and so on) just gives people an unfair advantage. Studio developed. (So long as Rocket remains in control and isn't forced to "compromise" with it.) Studio servers if it you're giving us a much larger map and allow a few hundred people in. Community if they are sticking around the same. Kickstarter, yes a funding boost for a "new" project is always nice. Plus I'd just like to see the sort of things you'd give a special edition.

Day Z w/ Arma II Free

I'm currently playing with the free version of ArmA 2 and I have to say if you have the spare cash laying around, buy the full version. The free version will do if like me you don't have the spare monies at the moment, but believe me the low res textures are horrible. I'm going to be upgrading to the full version as soon as possible, spare money allowing.
  17. Hi everybody! And that's pretty much the gist of this post. I only discovered DayZ last week and spent about 6 hours in the evening watching youtube vids of game play (mostly DevilDogGamer's Survive series), I was just that mesmerized by it. I mean it looked like this was finally the zombie survival game I had been waiting for, one with the emphasis upon survival! So after a couple of days spent convincing my girlfriend that spending more money on another game simply for a mod for it, here I am. So far I have to say I am not disappointed. Sure starting to play the very night before patch 1.7.1 has caused me no end of frustration these past couple of days, but like a beaten housewife, I always return for more punishment. So I thought I'd just share a few thoughts from the perspective of a "new guy". I thought I'd begin with my first character spawn, since it caused much hilarity from my girlfriend that she thought she'd share it with our other friends on FB. My Steam dl finally finishes and 11:30pm, I know the UK servers are going to be pitch black but I don't care, after days of watching the vids I -have- to play it at least once before I head off to bed, so I dl the Six launcher and away I go. I load in, it's indeed pitch black but I hear the sound of the ocean behind me. I decide to pop a flare to get my bearings, see if I can spot a road and head towards a town. As soon as I ignite the flare, my heart jumps, I hear a groan, I look left, there's a Zed, I look right, another one moving in. The flare fly's from my hand into the field and lights up three more. I panic, yell curses as I begin to run only to be tackled side on and knocked to the ground. More curses fly as I begin to bash random buttons in an attempt to switch back to my pistol, meanwhile my girlfriend sits beside me laughing her arse off as my character, now with a broken leg, flails his arms around and throws flares left and right before being eaten by several Zeds which thanks to the flares appear to be on fire. So after that I decide to jump into a US server so I can spawn in the light and try to work out some of the controls. That done I go to bed. The following day I spawn in with a chap behind me, three shots and I'm dead by the time I see where they came from. I respawn in a rather confused state as I seem to be missing most of my inventory, I shrug, assume it was a bug and hit respawn again, curious, the same thing, I try to find out what's going on from the global channel, wait, that's missing too. I assume it was the server I was on so I jump to another, then another. Finally I check the site and see this was all intended. "Well, lets see how this plays out." I think to myself after reading the many, many posts from both sides of the no starter weapon argument. And I died, a hell of a lot. Each time I found a perspective building I thought may have something more than tin cans or ammo, I would get spotted, so to the woods I would run, but not quite having gotten the hang of the stealthing system it took forever to loose the one that saw me ans his few friends I would pick up on the way out of town. So long in fact I would be completely lost and so far from the town I'd no longer be able to see it. And this was the case so many times it became unfunny, and my frustration grew. Being new to the game and trying to sneak into a town/house in the hopes of finding something of use with no way to defend yourself apart from your zombie like stamina was not a pleasant thing indeed. But I carried on, because despite the frustration of not being able to defend myself or find a weapon, I fel in love with the atmosphere. The constantly looking over your shoulder, the feeling of dread you feel when you hear a Zeds groan from the building you finally found that can be entered, all of it is amazing. And today I find there is yet another update, not only fixes but the addition of melee weapons and what a huge smile I have, the hopes that axes will be easier to find that the elusive guns have been for me is high so I update and jump right in. After about 15 minuets of searching I find an axe, I cheer out set off with the hope that I'll now be able to enter buildings and find some food, coke, perhaps even a map or gun. I wander through to woods and find a small town, I begin to sneak into it, I see a Zed wandering around a building I hope I can enter, I have my trusty axe so I got for it, I sneak in as close as I can and swing like a madman as soon as he turns. He's dead! My first kill after days I playing and dieing, I'm feel renewed, like I can take anything now. So I move through town, find a building I can enter, I hear the horrific sounds of a monkey-man Zed, a noise that would once send me running to the woods, but this time it's different, I have an axe, I can kill him. So I move in, he spots me, I swing my axe a few times, he dies. Yes I think, I've got this down, then as I turn, I see a spray of red, I'm bleeding, quickly I bandage myself, then look at my blood, I'm down to 4k. Crap! I get into the building, find a can of Pepsi and take to the tree's once again. In all the excitement of finally finding a weapon, I forgot one vital thing, this is a melee weapon, and that's just the place you -don't- want to be with Zeds. So yes, those are my first few experiences within this wonderful, frustrating, atmospheric mod. The feel of it is amazing and a wonderful job has been done. Yes the removal of a starting weapon is so incredibly frustrating for new players, and really ramps up the learning curve, but I think if people give it the time needed, it'll be a nice change. The addition of melee weapons I really like, and the dangers than come with them for those that are unprepared for the hits they will receive while using them is a nice way to begin the balancing, as with any new content for something in it's Alpha stages, it's not perfect and needs work, but that's what we're all here for and those things will come. Perhaps when the kinks have been worked out and the balance has been gotten right, a melee weapon could be the new starter weapon, so fresh players have at least some form of defence? Or at least have them common enough you'll spot one before a gun and it won't take an hour of searching or 5-10 deaths to finally find one. TLDR; Love the atmosphere and feel of the game. Yes no starter pistol is frustrating, esp for new players but when the stealth system is worked out fully it'll feel right. Melee weapons are a great touch, still need a little work, but they are new so they will. Perhaps once they have been tweaked enough they could become the new starter weapon?

First impressions/experiences of a "New Guy".

"Melee is new and comes with inherent risks. It is better than having nothing at all, but I wouldn't recommend it." And that's the way it should be, it's great. Plus I like the illusion of power it gives you (or at least myself as a new player) when you first get it. You think that's it now, all the buildings are mine to enter, until you swiftly realize melee with a Zed is something you really don't want to do unless you have to. Thanks for the warm welcome too, I see no point in whining about the difficulty, hell I fully expected to die repeatedly before I got this, and I have, perhaps a little more than I would have done if starting with a gun, but hey, it's all part and parcel of the mods evolution. the only real down side I have at the moment is that I am currently using the free version of ArmA 2 along with the Operation Arrowhead expansion so my textures look like crap. But hopefully I'll have enough spare cash next month to be able to pick up the full version and pretty up my environment somewhat.
