I'd rather have a red light. Great for flagging down NVG users without giving away your position to EVERYONE IN THE FOREST, like a normal flashlight does. Sure, most people hate me, but atleast I can find alternate uses for stuff. Also, flashlights can blind NVGs. Not effective, but they can.

Thermal sight needs to be removed
Zeromentor replied to SpeedyBanana's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
But remember, a bush is not cover. It is concealment. Thermal will catch you. But so will a good spotter. Movement, backpacks, black hats, a gun barrel, all these things give away your position. The thermal just increases how much they do. But if you took true cover (and yes, I know outside of large rocks, there isn't any true cover in the forests) you would not be seen. But the same thing could be argued about Ghillie suits. Poor at close range, useless against zombies, doesn't work in cities. Instead of picking out targets, they conceal you against onlookers. But in this case, Ghillie suit users are their own worst enemy. As many don't even try to use concealment, but instead just prone or crouch in the grass. Not like it matters, ghillies suits won't be removed. The only reason the M107 TWS was (was that the right weapon?) was due to the combination of the thermal sight and 1-hit wonder round. Which is still used with people flipping from the L85 to the AS50, but they need to take up 10 additional slots just for a sight, not even including ammunition. Not to mention, outside of dupers, I have never even seen an L85. Same with NVGs. I've seen like 5, and I have never found a pair actually on the ground. -

The second video showed me that the guy using the thermal is very fast at picking out targets. Not just people in open fields, but the locations they like to hide in. He didn't sweep the area, he picked spots to look directly at, and even stood up to run over and pop another guy. Either he has a sixth sense about these things, or something else, but either way the thermal seems to just be his affirmation that a player is there, he already suspected such when he looked over there. Sure, the thermal ruins using concealment (cover is unaffected, as that would be a wall, building or sandbags, and thermal doesn't see THROUGH those) and ruins people's day. But a majority of people stopping inside a bush and giving someone the time to pull out range finders, get the distance, pull out and reload an AS50 and then scope in and fire, well... They aren't there just to eat a snack. Also, I see thermal as the direct counter to ghillie suits. The rarity of the L85 is suppose to balance it. It's the dupers that make that a dumb thing. But we aren't balancing due to exploits are we? Otherwise, everyone should have godmode. I mean hackers do right? Why not infinite ammo? Hackers get that as well. Teleporting? Jeez, just being laggy gets you that one. The game isn't balanced around exploits, because exploits are just that. What is the direct counter to thermal? Hard cover. Not a bush, not a tree, not tall grass. That is concealment, and thermal defeats that like it does ghillie suits. Plus, that guy looked at the ghillie suit before getting popped, he had time to fire back. Hesitation sucks. -

Killed by AS50 at night on empty server?
Zeromentor replied to Brookhouse's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
There was a reason there was only 2 people on the server, everyone else left to dodge the hacker. Or, very bad luck. One of my buddies joined a server to get out of a building he found himself wired inside of. Server had 1 other guy, he was in Komorovo (spelling?) and walked out of the building... There was the guy. The only other guy on the server, who was promptly beaten to death with an axe. -

Ghillie Pro: You can hide in many areas due to the color of local grass or bushes. You can also remain concealed behind objects that most would be easily spotted near (Like cows). Ghillie Con: You can't hide in cities on the streets inside buildings. You can't hide from thermal. You can't hide from zombies, more than civies. Notice: Civies and camo also can't hide on streets, inside buildings or from thermal, nor have any extra effect on zombies. I think it makes it fair. Snipers camping all day have the unique ability to ambush passerbys. The only two things that give them away (gunfire and dead bodies) can be hidden (Silenced weapons, hide bodies). Thermals, although vastly more powerful in spotting targets, are attached to a weapon that is not nearly as effective as other more powerful weapons. So it goes like this: Normal Civies<Ghillies<Silenced Ghillies< Thermal Platform User < Guy with a automatic weapon at close range Note: Ghillie>Guy with Automatic weapon -

I can generally tell distance by the actual distance. (servers usually don't let you see that far, stopping between 1200-1600 meters) I could understand that using mildots to tell distance would be an advantage to you. In this case, if you couldn't tell distance accurately, or needed help (using mildots would be that help) then an AS50 could be better for you. -

If a admin camp of 10+ fully loaded tents blows up in the forest by satchel charge, does it make a sound?

Forgot to mention, if you run with a clan, get them all to wear ghillies and use nothing but blue/green chemlights, pick them up and then run into the cities with hatchets. Murdering Axe Squad, with glowy lights. EDIT: Obviously, works best at night on populated servers. -

Fun times to be had. Fill your pack with grenades. Smoke, HE, doesn't matter. Go to electro, and sit safely in a bush as you find anything to do with Air Raid Sirens on youtube. Longer audio files are better. Start file, lock mic button (Caps lock x2), release smoke grenades and HE into the city. At night, you can also use Road Flares. If you see anyone, chase them down with a hatchet. Beware, they might not be so happy to see you. You can also round up survivors and trap them in the church with barbed wire. -

AS50 with anything but the basic long range sight is hacked in. TWS is a thermal sight I believe, which means it is a hacked in weapon. You CAN use it, and as long as you didn't hack it in yourself, you will not be banned from the game. BUT NOTE: The admin of the server will probably kick/ban you for using a hacked weapon. You will not be able to access a server that an admin has banned you from. Also, you will be marked in the hive database, where your information is stored. -

FOR THE LOVE OF ALL THAT IS HOLY AND MERCIFUL, USE THE DAMN SEARCH FUNCTION BEFORE YOU POST. Thanks for reading that. Dude, you need to use the search function located at the top of the forums. It is there for a reason. What is worse, is when people make a new thread, and right below it, not even on the next page, is a thread about the SAME thing. Please, don't post in suggestions until you read the pinned threads. Then use the search function. I really doubt your thought are original enough to make their own thread. Bump a similar thread, or post in one. Don't make new ones based on things that have been discussed like 30 times. -

The OP does not have a signature, but thanks for trying to link me to him. I have no problems with the L85, thermal or no. My posts are for people that think that one weapon has some kind of unseen advantage over another when your target needs 1 round to die (an unmoving sniper, perching on a location overlooking another place of interest). To PinheadLarry, the chevron is actually very easy to use, just mount the target's head on the tip. Make sure the distance is equal to or below what you are zero'd for, as aiming at their head zero'd at something like 600, when they are 625 could mean a miss. Finding distance is very simple on most servers (Regular with range finder on scroll wheel) or by using a range finder ingame. If you have an AS50, chances are you have a range finder. Infact, I dare say the CZ550 is actually just as rare if not more so. I tried to put this down as a post, but the forums crashed for me, so the best I could do was copy it before it was lost: Let me put this into perspective for you. You are on Hill 1, 600 meters away from Building 2. You have a choice between the CZ550 and the AS50. Sniper on Building 2 has a super telephone pole launcher with infinite ammo, given to him by a hacker that was just banned. It doesn't matter, he is killable and not moving. CZ550, zero'd to 600 on the guy's unmoving head. You fire he dies. Rewind time. AS50 zero'd to 600 on the guy, doesn't matter where, you fire and he dies. Unless you are a terrible shot, the target is moving or he is past 800 meters, they are the same thing. You only need 1 round. I can say the same thing one million times, if you haven't gotten it yet, I doubt you ever will. In this situation, the AS50 does not have an advantage mechanically. -

I didn't say it was better. For the purpose of killing a sniper, under 800 meters, they are the same. I'm not mad, just disappointed. I wish you had something better in your collection. -
It happens more on weekends too
Zeromentor replied to sostronk's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Most script kiddies are children, note the label, "kiddies". That means they are busy throughout the weekdays in school, or sleeping. They are usually not on in the morning hours, and become more rampant in the evenings. When schools across the US start to take the children for normal school hours, you'll see a decrease in script kiddies throughout the week, with massive spikes on the weekends. Luckily for us, that means we have 5 hours of nearly no script kiddies (taking into account time zones, some go to school earlier and some get out sooner). There will be hackers, there are crowds of 20-somethings that have nothing better to do. But there will be a lot less. Also, big games releases tend to pull the script kiddies away. I don't see anything on the horizon (BlackOps2, Halo 4 being a ways off) so we'll have to put up with it for awhile longer. -

This seems to be hard for people to grasp. When sniping, you are unlikely to hit a moving target, unless you are a pro or they are moving to or away from you. When sniping another sniper, both of you are probably not moving. The first one to spot the other gets 1 shot. They get the advantage to shoot first. 1 shot will kill a person with either gun (CZ550 with a headshot, or AS50 anywhere). As the target will not be moving, the AS50 does no have an advantage. 10 rounds means nothing when it takes 1 round. 1-hit kill means nothing when the target isn't moving (headshots are EASY). So the AS50 has NO advantage against a single target that isn't moving, against a CZ550, UNLESS and only if it is further than 800 meters away. The CZ550 can not zero past 800 meters, whereas the AS50 CAN. So. Unless the CZ550 is further than 800 meters away, the AS50 does not have an advantage over it. It does have an advantage if you have a moving target (hitting the chest is easier than the head), or if there are more than 5 targets (10 magazine, thanks to the M107), or if you are beyond 800 meters away from the target. If none of those conditions are met, it has no advantage. And to answer Sakeoe, CZ550 can zero in for distance, making it very easy to get a headshot on an unmoving target. That is ALWAYS a 1-hit kill, even with the 889 damage 9mm rounds ingame. 8k versus 37k means nothing when a headshot is an instant kill. Note for one last time, the target is a sniper, and thus is not moving. -

"prime shot"? "your half to prove yourself"? "what's the northest you've been"? Is this your first time typing in English, or did you just figure out that those buttons on your keyboard make words when you place them in a certain order? Seriously, edit this up to look more professional. I can do misspelling, but WOW.

I assume the devs treated this more as a hotfix and less as a full patch, which is why it is 1.7.2.5 instead of 1.7.3 Let's just pretend that 1. is the game. 7 is the main version, and 2 is the patched version. 5 is a the hotfix for this patched version. 1.7.3 is a full patched version, not just a hotfixed version of 1.7.2

Sometimes new patches corrupt your location save point. You respawn (with your gear) at a spawn point. It used to dump you like 10km off the map, or in the ocean. Be glad they fixed it to this instead.
