If it was a Private server, the owner can do what he likes (after all, presumably he's paying for it). If it was a Public server, there are rules, but in practice some servers owners flout them. I've been shot at on my own server and my character killed once. No issue from me, that's a part of the game. I run my server with an "all Welcome" (except hackers and cheats) and a "no unscheduled restart rule". If there has to be a restart for some reason (for example to reset the time after maintenance), then I try to give players on the server ample warning. You are welcome to join my server if you wish - Wasteland, details in this sub forum But here are a few points from the server operators point of view A Private server can cost up to £70 per month - it isn't cheap. Many servers operate a clan pay system to subsidise the cost, and then limit access to those that pay the clan fee. Some servers, like mine, don't have a clan pay system yet, so they are effectively FREE for players to use. Despite this, I get zero feedback on the forum or on Steam, apart from a few decent players who show their appreciation. Players come and go, and play on the server that suits them at whatever time that suits them - some complain about server operators, even though that player might have contributed ZERO to the cost and never offered so much as a "thank you" to the server operator. With 0.60 just up on stable, its busy out there right now - I couldn't even get on my own server last night. It will likely stay busy for a month or two before dropping back to more realistic levels - that's the way it goes. Every man and his dog wants to play DayZ right now. This game is a two way street - servers need good players, and players need good servers. If you want decent servers to play on, then SUPPORT them. By all means complain when a server operator breaks the rules, but also TELL the good ones that they are good, tell OTHERS when a server is good, and give feedback. If players simply freeload off of server operators and never give anything back, not even a simple "thanks" now and again, then you'll find that you are restricted to Public servers with the hackers and hoppers, because the good Private servers have shut down or pass-worded you out. Its a co-operative thing. If you want good servers, then support them.

Wasteland has moved to a new Private Shard. The server is now up and running. Name - Wasteland UK/EU Hardcore - all welcome - no kicking IP - 81.19.216.50 Port - 2500 The Password has been removed - you can join straight from the server list Same rules apply as for the Public server. All are welcome provided they observe the rules, and no one who observes them will be kicked. We hope to see all the regulars from Wasteland Public server over on the new Private shard soon. Those coming from the public server will spawn in as fresh spawns, but that we feel is a small price to pay for the better control over the server time and playing environment that a Private shard brings. The rules are simple. No hacking, cheating, hate speech or abusive language. All playstyles are welcome, although PvE and survivalists are especially welcome, as are newer players who want a more co-operative environment. That does not mean that PvP, Kill on sight or banditry will not happen. This is Dayz and they are a fact of life. But Wasteland is an open environment and no playstyle is favoured over another. You can contact Admin on Steam - dws010363

Guess it had to happen. I've been away for a few days. In the meantime, 0.60 goes stable. I go on here, which has been pretty quiet for a while. Come on as a new spawn with nothing, and within 2 minutes someone is shooting at me on my own server :) Well, you missed.
-
I have 2 Private servers. At the moment only one isn't pass - worded, but once 0.60 goes Stable, I will be switching it to the Master server and it will be pass worded and by invitation or for previous known players. The focus will be on survival and co-operative play, base building and relationship building with other players. Sure it will be low pop to begin with. But everyone in from the start will start equal - no hackers, no cheaters, no server hoppers and no way to bring loot in from another server. At the moment both my servers are running 0.59 for the next few weeks until 0.60 goes across to the providers. If you want to play on one of my servers, drop me a PM with a few details, and if you are 18+ and seem like a decent guy, I'll see what I can do to fix you up with a place to play DayZ

As the title says. Will we get any notice or will it simply go live?
-
Is it live then? God dammit all you young people and your facebooks and iphonepadthingys, what the feck is going on? How do I adjust the vertical hold? Can I use an old coathanger for the ariel? Where is the nearest red phone box? What time is Crossroads on?
-
Thanks Smoss. The reason I asked is that I have 2 servers, both Private, and I want to close one of them. In order for players not to lose their current characters on there, it makes sense to do this when 0.60 comes in as everyone will be starting from scratch anyway. Will the servers update automatically or is there something I will need to do to enable that?
-
ok, ok, enough already :) I shudda knowed shudden't I? What I meant was, will it just be "there" when you fire up the game one day? Everything wiped clean and a new slate? No AKM and 120 rounds of 7.62, no hot potato, no nothing?
-
Just a couple of things to add there, Pilgrim. Some servers listed as "Private" in the server list are actually "Slave" servers to another "Master" Private server. I'm not entirely sure if the characters held on the Master and the Slave servers can appear as the same character on the other (if the person perspectives are the same). Also, if you log into a "Public" 3rd person server, your character will be the same on all other 3rd person Public servers, and the same goes for 1st person servers. Therefore you can have 2 characters concurrently on the Public servers, one 3PP and one 1PP On Private servers (status of Slave Servers I'm unsure) you can only have the character in the perspective that the server operates in, eg a 3PP character or 1PP character depending on the server setting. Btw, I have 2 Private servers now, one 3rd person and the other 1st person, and there are no access restrictions on either - anyone can join either servers provided they observe the rules, don't hack or cheat, and are not abusive to other players.
-
GorillasofGorka is our 3rd person, player v player oriented private server. Like our sister site, Wasteland, all are welcome provided they observe the basic rules (no hacking, cheating, racism or abuse), and no one will be kicked Wasteland is our 1st person, survivalist oriented private server. All are welcome
-
Hi Toxmose, Sorry about the late reply - I've been away all week. The rules are simple - no hackers, cheaters, racism and hate speech, or abuse of other players or the server. Insofar as the server goes, there is no one style of play favoured, although given the plethora of PvP servers out there, this one does encourage PvE, survival, and co-operative play We are still in our infancy here, but the objective is to get the server up the rankings with regular players coming back month after month. When we switch to 0.60 (which cannot be far away now), then players will be looking for a stable home to set up on.

I had a bit of a shock playing tonight when entering a shed at the back of a house, my AKM suddenly discharged 8 rounds randomly without me pressing the mouse or any key! A couple of dayz ago I noticed on two occasions that my character started throwing random punches I have a wireless mouse but they are nothing new. It doesn't seem especially sensitive so I don't think its that. Anyone got any ideas?
-
Thanks guys - I may try using a wired mouse again and see if I get anything similar again.
-
I know, I know, its a stupid question, but how do you attach pictures to a thread? It says there is nothing in my attachments folder, but there seems to be no way of uploading an attachment? I can't attach links either, not even the Gametrackers server info with its ready made link.
-
Thanks Jake - I like the face at the end. How did you know what I look like?
-
Thanks BioHaze. I'm a technical dinosaur.

I do sympathise with you Pilgrim, and agree with much of what you say. I looked through the server lists the other day and there were a lot of public servers blatantly stating "join = kick" or "join and lose gear" etc. Another trick is to call it "test server - don't join" or variations on that theme. But there are other factors. Apathy of players, zero feedback, no support and no input from users to make the game/server a better place. I've paid 3 months for a public server, the best part of £100. I've gone out of my way to try and welcome players, state repeatedly there is a "No kicking policy" and that "all are welcome". Yet I haven't received one single message or any feedback whatsoever. Zilch. Nadda. Nothing. I've had plenty of server hoppers and people setting up loot drops they can visit from other servers. There is a lot of self interest, players using servers at other peoples cost and yet not even contributing a single word of encouragement or support. Because perhaps they are so used to servers being poorly run or disappearing after a month that they simply can't be bothered to interact, they'll simply join another server until that too disappears and the cycle repeats itself. It sometimes makes you wonder if its even worth it. In the end you either love the game enough to do it or you don't. I've decided to go to a Private server now. I've tried with a Public server but with limited success. My thanks to those regulars users who kept coming back and apologies that I've had to move the server. It will cost me more this way, but I feel its in the regular players interest because there is a better chance of establishing a decent server with a regular and interested player base. I agree with much of what you say, but surely there must be some interest in the players themselves supporting servers and try to get behind the commitment others make some of which is on their behalf. It can't all be laid at BI or the server providers door. If players won't help create the kind of environment they want to play in, then they'll just be stuck with the same old routine of kick servers and group rule.

Wasteland is a new Hardcore 30 slot public server for UK/EU players. Here are a few reasons to come and join us. Reliability - I will pay the first 12 months out of my own pocket. And as the server will be paid in advance, you can be sure that Wasteland will still be here and running every time you want to play for at least a whole year. Come over, bring your stuff, make yourself at home. Possible extension to 40 or 50 slots if needed No unscheduled restarts - The scheduled restarts are 03.00hrs and 15.00hrs GMT. Other than for circumstances beyond my control, there will be no restarts of the server beyond these. 15minute and 5 minute scheduled restart warnings are in place. No kicking - The rules for the server are the basic rules for all. NO hacking, cheating, hate speech or abusive behaviour. Provided you observe these rules, there will be no kicking from this server. Friendly Admin - No tantrums, no shutdowns and no restarts. If anyone has a problem, a suggestion or a request, they can contact me via the forum messenger or in game. I will always respond and try to help if I can. No cliques or special treatment - Everyone is equal in Wasteland All Play styles welcome - PvP, PvE, RP, KoS, bandits, heroes, survivalists. No one style of play is favoured or looked down on. Just remember we all die in the end. Time acceleration is set to x2. So you will get an even balance of day/night time. We welcome new players or those who want to make the switch to the tense atmosphere you only get with 1st Person Hardcore. Make your first experience of the game positive on a server that values your presence and doesn't kick you because you aren't in the crowd. I'd also welcome a Clan or Team to take up residence, perhaps to declare a "safe zone", hunt bandits or perhaps declare a "no go zone", if that's their preference. Possible free use of a TeamSpeak server to the right people. Thanks to those already playing, and welcome to anyone new who wants to call by. IP-81.19.216.50 Port 2300

Hi guys and thanks for your continued support. Wasteland is going to a Private server next week. A new dedicated thread will be up soon with the details. The same ethos as before will still apply. All will still be welcome, and (provided you observer the rules), there will still be no kicking and no unscheduled restarts. This means that you will have to start over with a new character on the Private hive, but the benefits far out weight that. We get better control over the server and its settings which will enhance your experience, and less chance of hackers and cheaters spoiling the game. All play styles are still welcome, but we still especially welcome newer players and those who want a more co-operative style of play. No one will be banned or kicked from the new server just because they aren't in a clique. Sorry for any inconvenience as everyone works hard to build up their character, but switching to a Private hive is ultimately in the players best interests with 0.60 on the radar. This server will cease operating on 15th April but the new Private hive will be up and operating within a few days. I hope to see all the regulars from this server across on the new one soon, but if you have any questions please contact me on Steam - dws010363 The new Private shard can be found here - .

The Wasteland defence force struck its first blow in the defence of public servers last night. Around the perimeter of NWAF, close in to the external wire fence in the eastern tree line, we found a tent packed with ammo and weapons including VSS. No one places a tent in such ridiculously close proximity to the airfield unless a) they "think" the server they are placing their tent on is low populated and it won't be discovered, or b) they are thick. We didn't take the stuff, but whoever put it there is going to get a surprise when they go back. We will make it our business to look for any others. Our population is growing and we will make it as hard as possible for people to abuse our server. We are 1PP, we don't kick and we welcome all playstyles except cheats. Once again I would suggest that it isn't public servers killing dayz, its the players that abuse them.

As I'm fairly new to the game, I've still got some way to go to understand what's going on in the server. I check my logs (albeit the broken ones) regularly, but I'm not altogether sure what I'm looking for. Server hoppers are pretty easy to spot, but some player behaviour is less easy to explain. Is there a guide anywhere for server owners/admins to know what they are looking for in the logs?
-
Yeah I thought that might be the case, that's why I asked if there was a guide. Thanks for the info.
-
Thanks guys. I'm not at this stage talking about bans/reporting, but what sort of things to look for. Some things may appear strange but be perfectly plausible. Or the reverse may be true.
-
Thanks again guys. Player numbers up, GT ranking up, and average player time on line up for the 6th consecutive week in a row. Slow going, but heading in the right direction. Next up, to establish a trading post. Anyone interested in helping with that, drop me a line. And also, does anyone know how an old dinosaur like me can get the Gametrackers banner to appear in this thread? Every time I try I simply get a line of text instead of the banner?
