How to preserve my character before I reinstall ARMA
Goose Springsteen posted a topic in DayZ Mod Troubleshooting
Hey Guys, I'm planning to reinstall ARMA/Arrowhead overnight to see if that fixes my occasional frame stutter issue which only appeared after I reinstalled windows. However do I need to preserve any files in order to prevent me from losing my character? Also my humanity is -17000 after killing 4 people is this a bug or does the effect just stack? Cheers! Goose -
What was your dumbest death?
Goose Springsteen replied to Bobosaur's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
My most annoying death occurred at North Airfield about 3 weeks ago where after finding a machine gun and a 100 rounds of ammunition I closed a door on myself crushing my body against the wall and killing me outright. :D -
The Winchester 1866 or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love 19th Century Firearms
Goose Springsteen posted a topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Hey Guys, I just thought I'd make a thread that outlines why I think that the Winchester 1866 is by far the most practical gun in the game, it's quite simple really the reason is AMMO. That M16 or AKM you have might be nice but good luck finding enough ammo for it without risky raids on military bases. On the other hand if you walk into a city and find that you aren't drowning under a huge pile of Winchester pellets and slugs you are most definitely doing something wrong. This is what makes the Winchester so useful because the slugs are quite accurate out to a few hundred meters and the pellets are really useful against the Zeds up close. It's a jack of all trades that is well suited to the majority of situations. Personally speaking I at one time had over 300 rounds of 1866 ammo - come to think of it I think the prevalence of ammo may be a little extreme, perhaps it should be toned down a little bit :P? What do you guys think is the 1866 fine as is or should there be somewhat of an ammo nerf? Cheers, Goose -

I believe you will find the relevant action in the context menu when you look at the car :D. As a side note (I've said this a few times) I'd really be interested to see the inclusion of heavier armoured vehicles . Perhaps even a T-34 or some such? In any case I would really love to see some APC's that would at least offer protection against the scourge of regular arms. To start with something relatively benign like the medical UN APC would be fantastic. -
Just an aside but am I the only one who thinks it would be cool if you could drive the trains in Cherno ;)? I wouldn't like to think about how many gallons of diesel you would need to fill them up though! :D Must be my inner train simmer!

The Official Unofficial Bandit Removal Petition
Goose Springsteen replied to The Killing Joke's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Loot. 'Yay!' Such a terrible terrible repercussion. (not) Then in fact you are a bandit-murderer. Put it this way' date=' the bandit system is telling us, the people who will not kill another human without exploring other options, that we can't trust you because you are a dick who likes confrontation. It helps us by warning us about your past actions. Oh helping people in chat... so selfless! I implanted a (judged) in there to make it make more sense, correct me if I was wrong. Let me say something, to everyone as well, the bandit system puts you on the back foot because of your past actions! Why do you think you can murder five people and then want to be accepted in my group of survivors whom have only helped others and avoided conflict when possible?? You want it both ways. You want to be able to kill people when it conviences you... but you don't want to be judged by others when it inconviences you. Heres the deal... you are being judged by your actions in the past not the actions in the potential future. Suck it up. Your a grown man with a big gun, go kill more people and make it alllll better. Because you've already killed people! Its making you play the role you decided. Its the mark of Cain! You are not forgiven just because the other guy can't tell his story. Then you are encapsulating the cycle of violence you only started yourself. You say: "Oh look that guy has a good weapon I want it." *shoots* Then when another guy looks at you and sees that you have been known to cold blooded kill a guy for his loot and pops you you cry "UNFAIR!!!!". I laugh at how weak you really are. You really encapsulate the bandit mentality. Whilst I appreciate your response I don't appreciate your condescending tone throughout said response. Attacking people adds no credence to your argument but rather discredits the legitimate points which are lost in the tepid vitriol. Please read through what I have written, never once did I claim the current morality system was unfair. I have however justifiably I think said it is gamey in the extreme. I don't have a problem with unfair, the world of DayZ is harsh and unfair and I love it for it. However there are things that are unfair which also detract from the game and it's "mission statement". Examples of unfair things that detract from the game are quite easily found in the limitations of the engine like the zombies who can hit through walls and predatory ladders that have probably claimed more lives than anything else in ARMA. The bandit system as it stands is something which I think detracts from the game because it cheapens interactions You said that it's the mark of cain and mythology aside you do make a mistake here because following up you say "(y)ou are not forgiven just because the other guy can't tell his story" the fact is that the other guy can tell his story because death is not persistant in this game and he can be back on the beach within a minute of me killing him. Let the consequence of unabated banditry be a terrible reputation amongst other players and not a skin that helps no one. -

The Official Unofficial Bandit Removal Petition

Just to reiterate what I said just before the bandit system was implemented. "Hey All, I just thought that as someone who does occasionally indulge in a spot of PVP'ing I might give some thoughts on the matter of the (what I assume is) the impending morality system. Personally speaking, my concern regarding this likely feature is that it detracts from the present emergent consequences of acting like a dick in the game, namely that if you persist in killing other players the penalty is already there: you have alienated someone who is likely to want revenge and may even attempt to actively seek you out and kill you. Instead of this, some kind of morality based system that penalizes players who PVP seems far too arbitrary and (if I may use the term without irony) gamey personally. New people who see you for the first time shouldn't know whether you are good or bad based on the colour of your name or your skin, rather they should have to form their opinions of you based on your actions and from what they have heard from other players. Worse still is the prospect of negative stat effects for those who PVP, again I think that the consequences for being a killer are already sufficient to present their own challenges and putting someone at a disadvantage because they kill other players through stats seems to me to be a cheap move." -
Do you in any way regret this mods sudden rise of popularity?

Hey Guys, First of all I want to make clear that I am very happy that Rocket and his fantastic team have created something which is becoming nothing short of an internet sensation. With coverage on websites like Kotaku, Rock Paper Shotgun, and PC Gamer there has been a massive influx of players and ARMA Combined Operations has shot to the top of the steam sales charts. But I must say that now looking at the dozens of full servers I do lament the loss of the feeling of community I had when I first played this mod about a month ago. It was our little secret that we were lucky enough to have stumbled across and with less than ten servers to choose from you really started to forge relationships with players you'd see on a daily basis who you didn't even intending to bump into just by virtue of the communities small size. Do any of the other "veterans" (yes I dare to use that term :P!) feel the same? I'm excited by the possibilities but it feels to me that we have seen the end of something in the beginnings of this mods "mass" appeal. Nostalgia in the space of a month this must be a new record eh? ;) -

just look at the caliber. in vanilla ArmA2 that's the only thing affecting damage AFAIK. they're both 5.56 Is velocity accounted for in any way
-
thanks for the info' date=' i appreciate it [/quote'] What you should keep in mind is that the m4a3 is essentially a carbine so whilst it is very good up close and has a very nice sight it loses accuracy after about 200 meters whereas the m16 can be very effective for more than 3 times that range.

Ladders: The true scourge of DayZ
Goose Springsteen replied to swayzesghost's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
I can top that, I killed myself by opening a door on myself which crushed me against the wall. :D I also broke a friends leg by lying down near him ;)! I'm so freaking boss it's unreal. -
Hey All, I came into the possession of a toolbox earlier today and apparently it can be used repair vehicles? If this is the case then how is it used - does it simply repair the hull or can it entirely repair a vehicle in which case making all the other stuff (wheels/rotors/fuel tanks etc.) redundant. Thanks in advanced for your reply! Goose

A quick question regarding damage modelling!
Goose Springsteen posted a topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Now I think I am correct in stating that scattered around Chern are a few choppers that are armed with rocket pods? In base ARMA I've noticed that most buildings seem to become "destroyed" when you fire enough at them. Would this be the case in DayZ? So for example would it be possible for a group of bandits to get a little bird to rocket the hospitals to pieces and and in doing so cause a mass shortage of medical supplies? Or would the hospital "respawn" after a certain amount of time assuming it is even possible to damage the buildings in the mod? Cheers! Goose :D -
I heard about that - but what of the toolbox in what ways can it repair vehicles? :D Cheers Rocket!
-
I don't think that scrap metal bit is right at least because I've found tank trap and razor wire "items" in game :-/? Perhaps Rocket in his infinite wisdom can illuminate us all!
-
As a bandit I might be biased because whilst I love the skin I have always felt that the visual indication system didn't really make sense from a role playing perspective. I however would really like a wider variety of skins to choose from :D!

Hey Guys, I was wondering if anyone could shed light on the fact that whilst I have 11.5k blood I have reconnected to the server I play on often (FR3) collapsed and I have to wait a number of minutes for the timer to count down after which I can play without inconvenience? This has happened to me twice in a row now :-/. I appreciate any help or insight you might offer!

Thanks for the reply rocket! I hurt myself on a staircase - will the effect go away eventually or am I stuck with it :D?

I am experiencing something similar but I'm not to the same extent it seems to happen intermittently a few times an hour with a freeze for half a second to a second.

Just on a tangent but surely I can't be the only one who longs for a fuel hungry APC :D! I don't need one with pew pew laz0zs or cannons but a really rare APC like the UN Medic one just to protect you from incoming rounds would be fantastic. Of course I don't think you should be immune so maybe mines or a few very rare RPGs should be added eh? Just the thought of having an APC in this game makes me giddy though!
