I want to be scared - A discussion on horror and Dayz
8bit_Survivor replied to hrdrok's topic in General Discussion
Great post and I agree with most. I think a lot of the visual atmosphere will be coming later. After all they are still adding building models and vehicles. Once they are all in I'm sure they will be dressing it all up. Audio is a big area that currently falls short. But have been seeing a lot of dev updates concerning sound, especially gunshots. Once the new engine is in we will hear the true apocalypse. P.S. Being eaten alive is clearly a terrible way to die. Saying you don't think it would be worse than a bullet in the head is ludicrous. .. -
I also look forward to the day when the option for 24/7 day is gone. I do also change my gamma setting, only slightly, to offset the light glare I have on my monitor. I'm not cranking it up all the way though. I really like the accelerated time servers but outside of private servers it's tough to find any with decent pop. Surprisingly I am one of the 'purists' that Astinvlogs mentioned. By that I mean I only use in game chat. I feel 3rd party comms is more of a cheat/exploit than gamma setting. Gamma Settings are an option given to you by the devs. Most likely because they haven't quite figured out how to best represent night time (+new renderer soon) DayZ gives you options for communication including long range(walkie talkie). Any communication in Day Z should come at the price of being heard by those around you. 3rd party comms eliminate this and allow you to speak with allies even after death.

I think teamwork is encouraged but not forced upon you which I believe is the intention. This is going to be one of the most difficult design hurdles when it comes to game mechanics for BI devs. Ofcourse you have to adjust your tactics if your solo but some may find it more enjoyable. My problem with grouping up is that they always want to use TS. I do not do this with DayZ, nor will I. It ruins so many aspects of the game including immersion, realism, and makes it feel too safe. Just as the Hicks recently stated about gunshots...you should be worried about communicating to allies because someone might hear you. Using TS takes away that element.

Gearing up is the best part of this game
8bit_Survivor replied to MoOnKat's topic in General Discussion
I find gearing up to be the most rewarding as well. Especially when you craft your own leather outfit :) I don't find it to be the best however. Player Interactions are the best part of the game for me..m when they don't KoS...which is roughly 2/10 so far. -
Found some in the corners of the tents at NW airfield. Not much since .54 loot rollback though. Also found some at tanks as well. I have an SKS myself and would love to use it in game, just can't argue the amount of ammo I find for the other weapons in comparison.

Extracting sap and crafting it into resin/pitch. Would be cool survival mechanic and has lots of uses including waterproofing, wound treatment and glue (repairs).
-
Great idea! Lots of uses and good risk -reward factor.

Already suggested maybe but worth repeating...

Thank you DayZ Players, Devs, And Mods

+Beans, agreed. -
Alot of these are most likely generic placeholders and will be updated much later. Variety would be nice, just not a priority.

what's the difference between shadows HIGH and VERY HIGH?
8bit_Survivor replied to anarky321's topic in General Discussion
For me Low on all is not the best option. Changing some setting from Low to Normal actually gives me an increase in FPS. Clouds for example on Normal are fine but on Low I see FPS drop. Play around a bit to find the right settings for you. -
Decided to check out the military base near Vybor. Checked it out from the nearby hill...looks clear. Did 2 circuits around the outside of the wall...looks clear. Went to the jail building and opened the door to peak in....looks clear. Started into the jail and saw half of a player come up through the floor in the corner as I entered the building in the prone position.... Tried to sprint past quick but got hit to unconcious and then....[ You are dead ] So long to my 6 protective cases. I always find death to be a mixed blessing because I find gearing up to be the most rewarding aspect of the game for me right now. But death to a glitcher is always sad.

Developers communicating with players
8bit_Survivor replied to MadWookie's topic in General Discussion
Agreed, these devs are great. +Beans to the dev team! -
I have the same problem. Perhaps someone who streams can help out!?

Interested to see how server hopping will be dealt with in terms of barricading. Seems to me the currently used player based server structure is problematic for a sustained character open world game such as DayZ. This setup is fine for FPS with minimal character progression, but not sure why they made this choice. Private hives are going to be very common in the future, that's the only answer I think. Whitelisting is a problem for me sometimes though since some require a FB/Twitter account t which I don't have or want.

+Beans, cool idea. I appreciate you didn't make it too easy. They have to grow some food. Better than just leaving peaches!

Been seeing a high amount of bear traps as well. Decided to set one up at the door of a house. Immediately after set up it went off and broke my leg, I hadn't even moved. Apparently I was setting up the trap with my leg in it... my fault I guess :) RIP boots and pants!

Looking forward to BI working out the new loot system bugs as well. Finding my cooking pot was like Christmas as a child! Problem is some servers had 20k less items than they should, this is something BI couldn't overlook. A core feature like looting mechanics needs to be even among all playable servers before full implementation. Hang in there, hopefully in .56 we'll be back to 'surviving' and not 'flourishing'.
-
Some 'testers' may have lost faith. But that is just because of their ignorance to the development process of a video game. Core features come before most bug fixes. 'Game Breaking' problems are things like server/client crashes, the inability to launch the game, etc. 'Unrepeatable deaths' are deaths with no clear trigger and therefore cannot be faithfully reproduced. I would suggest reading the latest status report on DayZ.com. Hicks explained things very well in that post.Good luck survivor.

Any info on the 24 hour cycle bug?
8bit_Survivor replied to Weyland Yutani (DayZ)'s topic in General Discussion
Not sure myself but would be interested to know. Found nothing on it either. Most servers I have access to are 24/7 day. The few day/night servers are all very low pop. -
I have heard global admin before as well. But they were giving a heads up of a server restart. Very helpful, but scared the crap outta me :)

Did you see yourself fall? If not a survivor may have shot you when you tried to climb down...may be.

Whenever I hold my compass or look through my binoculars I am shaking violently. My gun also shakes when crouched, as seen through 1P camera. Aiming/raising the weapon does not result in shaking. I have done every medical treatment available. I am not hungry, cold, injured, hot...nothing. I am hydrated, energized and healthy. Relog didn't work. Going to test a new char and see if it still happens. Character bug?

Shaking Hands w/Compass & Binoculars only?
8bit_Survivor replied to 8bit_Survivor's topic in New Player Discussion
I ate no human meat, it was the cold bug. Built a fire and was good to go. Thanks again all.
