What settings should I run it?

Setting? Home. Computer room. Dimly lit. Chernarus map on your cell.

    TWO flipping CHARACTERS!

I LOVE this game... it has SO MUCH social potential... BUT IT'S TOO MUCH RISK! IF we could lay low on one character & stick our necks out on the other... THAT WOULD BE AWESOME! Or you know, if GOD FORBID SOMEONE ELSE WANTS TO PLAY

    TWO flipping CHARACTERS!

& ya I realize private hives are all different... but like, there are a million reasons why having two characters would balance the game. You could have a kitted out character and a social probe & say your social probe gets ganked by some bandits... well, you always have that standby to avenge yourself with. Our just die twice... but still.. the game is too stressful for solo people who don't have irl frinds who also have the game & time to play the game on the same schedule as you. It's why people hate it. There's little to no incentive to be sociable, and the only loophole is giving people a second character that they can relax on. I don't understand the belief that this would lessen the experience. I realize 2 characters per server would just end up meaning you get a mule, but so freaking what? So you get a mule. Big woop. It doesn't Make 10rnd .22 amphibia mags any easier to find.

Client side.. I know is highly unlikely, but you know how Zelda on the NES has three save slots? Ya, that.

Gamma and Brightness - Night Play

Gamma slider doesn't magically reveal pixel data that wasn't already there. Display color accuracy drifts. Shadow detail takes a huge hit. Calibrate your display.

    No Server Hopping?

    alpha logic...
  8. I'm didn't say they should change every server, I just said that since it's in alpha, you would think there would be alpha development servers which aren't intended for gameplay, but rather, playtesting/glitchhunting.. But yeah, I totally agree with you... you just missed the point.
  9. about a week in & I found a pistol suppressor... only to have it & the gun it's on magically vanish into my completely empty bag after drinking a soda  yeah, no major complaints here <_< I mean, at this point it's kind of expected... I kind of wish they would embrace the "alpha" thing and just make everything spawn like crazy everywhere (or at least specific places). It seems like they're trying to appease the crowd of people who don't want to accept that it's a development build... you'd think they could totally accelerate the testing if they'd stop trying to implement new gameplay mechanics as though it were the final build... but then again, I'm probably way off on those assumptions... I know they're trying to attack cheating head on... but you'd think... if we're supposed to be testing the game, that certain things would be possible, like spawning in whatever we want... at least on some servers... how are we supposed to find bugs if we're stuck playing with all these restrictions? Like "oh, I just lost my silenced pistol while drinking a soda. HOW, am I supposed to reproduce what just happened when I JUST lost the things that were involved with whatever bug just happened?!! Did it fall through the floor? who the hell knows?! I have no way of checking." not complaining, it just seems odd.. I understand that some people want to have a taste of the final experience (myself included), but still... certain things can't really be tested in a reasonable amount of time given the restrictions. frequent total restarts on chaos servers would be.. well... kind of fun to be honest.. but more helpful for development than the snails pace builds of now.

    The Psychology of Understanding Alpha

This phenomenon you speak of, is known as a temper tantrum. people throw hissy fits because they never learned how not to. they will come up with a any excuse, just to promulgate their boohoos. And that's okay actually... it's all part of the process.
  11. ...& if the server is full? Don't forget, we're still alpha testing.

    Limit brightness/gamma increase

The gamma curve on a TN panel is dependent on your viewing angle. If you've got a TN panel, go here and see for yourself.

    0.58 Thoughts

I was playing .58 a few weeks before it went stable & I still hadn't seen a single zomble. I was getting bored earlier today & had like 200 .22 rounds and found a trumpet in one of those security guard buildings with the busted out windows & I was like... "what the hell" & fired off a few dozen rounds & a zambee just tardwaddles right past the windows all special ed like he's gonna miss the icecream truck & scares the living beejeebus outta me! my god I thought I'd die right there... left the door wide open and everything!

    Why so much nighttime?

It's actually more like 1/3 of all the time... but it fluctutes throughout the year.. like, even thought equinox means equal night, technically, if you factor in twilight, the night & day are closer to being equal during the winter solstice... and again, it totally depends... but overall, night is 30ish%, twilight is 20ish% and day is 50ish%... but you could take it a bit farther and just say transitions, nights, and days each take up a third of the total time.

    Limit brightness/gamma increase

actually... it would. The technical aspects of gamma correction are not only impossible to prevent, but they honestly don't create any advantages to players. (only disadvantages to those who do not use it correctly) The issue is a bit more complicated... How to Fix Gamma Exploit

I have been seriously bent on this topic for the past few days. Not gamma correction in DayZ specifically, but vision in general... I read a ton of crap and I'm accumulating a list of things that would make DayZ more real & interesting.. Cool crap like, wearing sunglasses during the day reduces the amount of time it takes your eyes to adjust to the dark.. increasing your blood sugar also helps... laying low helps too, so say the ninjas anyway.. & your rod cells can't see red... Which brings me to This . This is what you're going to take with you into the darkest room in your house. Fill it up, because you're going be in there for a while. Also, you'll need a very small source of light, you're phone will work. Hold your light behind your back, use your body to block it & adjust the light level right up to the point where thisdissapears! As you'll hopefully be able to notice, the main difference between scotopic vision and photopic vision is... FEKKIN EVERYTHING You want to look at everything like you normally would, but you can't! you see something out the corner of your eye and move your eyes to look at it & ERR! WRONG! You can't do that anymore! You're stuck with that blind spot for like, half an hour, more or less, & your acuity is pretty much trashed, it doesn't come back. If you want any degree of visual acuity, then you're going to have to use your night vision somewhere else... somewhere like... outside. outside is so, soooooo, so so so much brighter than the darkest room in your house. Anyway, yeah... it's on topic, because the way you fix the gamma "exploit" is by fixing the core issue. the game just grayscales everything.

    How to Fix Gamma Exploit

It's not an exploit. gamma corection restores lost detail. the stuff you can't see that shows up when you adjust the gamma is actually supposed to be visable. the way you differentiate between dark and bright IRL is kind of rough. your brain kind of looks at the whole picture and says this is bright or this is dark. Now, take all that information & crush it into a fraction of your total field of view... this is what happens with things like monitors and photos and whatnot. you're monitor has to compete with the rest of everything your eyes are seeing... what's more, monitors aren't very good at reproducing darks in the first place.

Player running speed. Dev response appreciated.

Well, I was getting my numbers from this map I use on my phone. I was just playing earlier & I wanted to actually, you know, check the numbers.Hmm... let's see... sprinting 100 meters in DayZ took me approximately 20 seconds & sprinting 250 meters took me about 45 seconds... That's ~4.8 minutes to sprint a mile. So, more like 20kph. Which is fast, for sure, but it isn't supernatural. I'm doing this in .58 & it's not that I don't believe you guys or anything like that, but... Are you sure your sources aren't just outdated? I completely agree that the game would be better with some adjustments/additions.

I dont understand why there is no AUTO RUN KEY!!!

yeah, there are like a billion posts between this and the OP, & surely a zillion people have already said this... but... just make a toggle W macro & feggin fuhget about it! You start adding auto run keys to the control set and players are gonna forget what computers do & start demanding gamepad support...
  23. This isn't really a well thought out reply or anything, but why not shift zombie AI clientside when it comes within a certain proximity of a player, so that a zombie essentially becomes an extension of whatever player its tracking, rather than being handled by the server... Like I said, I put zero thought into that, so there are probably more than one blatantly obvious problems with it... Which I am entirely unaware of... Be gentle.

Player running speed. Dev response appreciated.

I don't know if you were raised in the jungle by a family of three toed sloths... but no. it isn't.. It takes around 5 minutes to run a kilometer in DayZ.. A mile takes around 9 minutes. I don't know about you, but I'm about 6 feet tall & I can run a mile in less than 9 minutes. As far as sprinting is concerned... Yeah, a 5 minute mile seems fast, and it is... because it's sprinting. Ever sprint a whole mile? Yeah, I think it's safe to assume you either haven't or your are abnormally short. 5-7 minutes is about right. A more realistic system for fatigue would be nice though. IF you character eventually just collapsed like his/her legs were broken after a few miles... that would be about right. I ran a mile barefoot once... couldn't walk for a week. The pads of my feet were replaced by two giant blisters. Haven't tried it in DayZ yet...
