Books = essential Manuals for crafting, repairing etc
sushimaster replied to VaTiS's topic in Suggestions
yeah, maybe if all our characters were meant to have only a preschool level of education... no offense or anything, but yeah... it isn't like the crafting items are complex chemical structures, require circuit diagrams or anything like that... but there's an idea, if you could craft more complex things & those would things require book smarts, additional tools, etc. Like repairing a severely damaged vehicle, for instance. Never once came across the Czech equivalent of an O'rileys or an Autozone in Chernarus... could be interesting. Maybe even a radioshack sort of store (oldschool radioshack)... more stores like that in general would fill out the world a bit. given the quantity of items in the real world & the lack of things in DayZ.. You'd think you'd eventually come across a house overflowing with all that missing stuff.. what did the zombies eat it all or something? Where's all the garbage? Sorry.. off topic.. yeah, the craftable items are kind of meant to balance out the lack of important things... requiring a hard to find book on how to tie a piece of leather to a stick would be counter-intuitive. -
eh... the scale seems fine to me. some of the ceilings are pretty low, but not unreasonably so. I'd still like to see more variation in the player models though.

Supressing voice-chat outside of Dayz (Skype, Mumble, TS3, etc.)
sushimaster replied to S3V3N's topic in General Discussion
uh... I kind of did... there isn't much that can actually be done within the game itself, but yeah... I don't think you're understanding the OP. I believe the assumption is that human beings aren't capable of psychic communication with one another, so, private chat channels outside the game are a bit abusive & I'm pretty sure the OP was looking for ways to prevent this... but as we already know, it wouldn't be possible... just saying it isn't possible isn't really on topic though. There are certainly things that could be done within the game to combat the inherent handicap presented by such communications, but I'm not sure what would work the best. A party system encouraging players to group up could trigger group specific sounds and animations, maybe adding a bit of a strategy element to the gameplay, having a variety of squad formations could add a bit of character to playing together (i.e. Bandit squads have different functionality than Hero squads have different functionality than Survivor squads) but it still couldn't prevent the use of external communications & would only have a limited ability to balance out what that entails... I'm not saying the core game needs anything like this, but it is eventually going to support mods, you know... Some people are quite fond of brainstorming stuff like this... I think we're all entitled to use our imaginations. are there any private servers out there that promote this level of realism? -

Supressing voice-chat outside of Dayz (Skype, Mumble, TS3, etc.)
sushimaster replied to S3V3N's topic in General Discussion
Bah, stop saying it can't be done & come up with constructive solutions to the core issue. Could probably just piggyback something on the stealth mechanic to balance the handicap. Or just have whitelist only purist servers. ^racist xD -
Is it worth buying Dayz standalone yet? [With Developer responses]

What does the SOUND SOURCES options in the settings do?
sushimaster replied to randmanq's topic in General Discussion
They've since changed the name. It's a microphone setting. The setting in the config file is "maxSamplesPlayed", but you've got to read it from their perspective. I'm fairly certain that the setting's main function is to inform the server/client of your microphone's sample rate, so, match it to your microphone's settings. My headset only samples the mic at 16kHz, so anything higher than 16 is full of gaps & transmits too quietly. Also, higher sample rates may adversely affect your upload speed, so even if you're soundcard is sampling at a high rate, you have the option to knock it back if it becomes an issue. Though, I'm not 100% on the specifics... You only need two sound sources for full 3D positional audio: left & right. Your playback sample rate defaults to the system. It is the limit for the number of sounds you hear. -
it finally hit me... MY GPU wasn't making good contact with its heatsink! woops... download GPUZ &/or Furmark & make sure that isn't your issue. I had replaced the thermal pads years ago & never noticed any ill effects... I guess my luck ran out. went to the hardware store and bought some #6 washers. cleaned and reapplied new thermal goop. carefully tightened the screws including washers & now all is well. in furmark, my temps were jumping to 100c instantly, & now my temps never go over 80. I got these becasue they were the smallest they had that I could find relative to how patient I was at the time... I put two on each of the four mounting screws around the gpu. probably not the best decision using split lock washers, but they're so small it really doesn't matter. http://www.lowes.com/pd_58133-37672-605269_0__?productId=4639803 the gap between my gpu and heatsync was so large... dust actually accumulated in the thermal compound.. I've been surviving on 2d games for so long.. I almost forgot what 3D tasted like...er.. looked like... Still... I'd been playing the Tomb Raider game from 2013 for a while before this & it never caused any problems... I was also playing games like: CS:go, Black Mesa, Gmod, mirrors edge, batman arkam assylum... none of these games caused a crash (most of them, I play with 3Dvision)... then I tried playing GTA4 & it would crash, my GPU fan would ramp up & the entire system restarted & I finally realized it was a temp thing... I guess it's on a per-game basis how much the engine will throttle before everything just melts down. good thing dayz cuts itself off... Anyway, check your temps.

Just bought the game. tried both stableish/experimental versions. non of the suggestions work, except perhaps the ones I haven't tried yet (will try when I get home) Could it be audio driver conflicts? I was playing with headphones plugged into onboard audio device, but generally use HDMI for audio, not a likely cause as onboard was only device enabled, but could be caused by onboard audio...(realtek)... on that same note, I've got my main monitor connected with display port & a secondary monitor is connected via hdmi, through an AVR... could be registry errors but I doubt it... system is basically a fresh install. Also, was using gtx660 with gsync enabled... Though, disabling the HDMI entirely didn't yield any difference, so I'm thinking it's background processes or the audio device... various background processes, asus 5-way optimization, turbolan, win free anti-virus, avast, razer synapse, etc. OS is windows 7 64bit... 16GB of ram, i7 4790k... but it isn't a hardware issue, that's for sure. (unless something frigging nuts is happening, which I highly doubt..) anyway, is any of this stuff concurrent with you guys? (I'll post more software stuff later)
