    been away long time - some questions

    Yeah, SSD for any BI game is going to help. Since the map streams, it does not load like most maps. All their games benefit from a fast overclocked CPU, SSD, and high V-ram GPU. It's possible that the CPU will become less important over the GPU for DayZ 1.0 though, but we'll see. Right now there is no occlusion culling, but they are working on it. No reason to optimize anything until after. Don't get too much into FPS, it just doesn't matter right now. It will happen, and the game will eventually run great. They do care about server optimization right now. If you want to follow development of this game, that is the meter to follow. Nothing can be implemented without server optimization.

    I never know how people are going to react, opposing freedom is baffling. Questions... Will there be TEAM SWITCH like ArmA, by this I mean spawning another character and then be able to switch between them? I could then live out my fantasy of being the only man alive in a group of women. :) sorry ladies didn't find any pants today.... Also, will we be able to use +- to speed the game like ArmA SP? Or some kind of wait?

    Multi-Person Mechanics to discourage KOS

    The biggest factor, I think, is just having a very brutally difficult game. Infected stamina might even create some teamwork too. One guy can stash his gear (making himself light and fast) and then run through town gathering infected, for easy looting or leading them to kill zone. Also, I've always loved the idea of rock, paper, scissors, which victor did say they had motion captured at some time. I don't like the trading screen idea, but i would love some non ui version. Where players would hold out item and it would automatically swap items. I remember talk of throwing items at a player, the item would go in hands. Was I dreaming this or is this planned?

    How can 1PP be improved?

    Free look is a mouse button must. I actually recommend keeping head bob up, it keeps me from running constantly, which keeps me going the pace I should. This is more of a arma tip, because running in dayz is so overpowering, but it's going to change back. Also, FOV should take into account your monitor size, resolution, and your sitting distance. There is calculator for arma, but this just tells you what numbers to put into the cfg. I like 87.5, I have a 16:10 monitor.

    Possible improvement for third person and fire fights.

    The thing is we are not playing DayZ right now. I like 1pp, but there is no point right now, there are no infected, there is no real challange. I think this is why everyone is on 3pp now, it will always be more populated, but not to this extreme. The 1pp and the gameplay it forces is more closely inline with the final vision of dayz. This is why the 3pp will be changed. Everytime a survivor spots a infected over a fence a dev cries. They are putting all their tech know how into infected numbers. 3 to 4 thousand, at best guess. Servers will have a limit. Since this is a limiting factor, 3pp will change. It's not really about which one is better, has more to do with matching the dayz mod brutal survival concept.

    How can 1PP be improved?

    The best improvement I can think of is "stances", like arma3, but in a survival theme, not military. A3 stances are firing positions for your weapon, survival stances should be based on postponing head for better vision, without exposing body while retaining low profile for stealth. Examples...Prone, but lifting head over grass....peeking around fence, like lean but not 15 years old kind.....tip toe stretching....more overall level of sight for windows. Point being, AI would not sense body exposure. Also, I haven't tried oculus rift, but would consider it, if it happens for dayz, which I believe has a good chance down the road.

    Sorry noctoras, should have quoted drufel. I don't even want to get into it with him. Also, I don't know about putting a death match meter on the game development. That's perspective, 100% of the time I fear players, but it rearly turns into a "death match", I play survival. I think most people now are going to look at the zone map and picture sprinting to the red zone. It's possible now, yes, but we're not playing dayz now, it's just a preview really. It's player progression, the key will be what it takes to progress there, not that zones are there, but what it takes to get there, which we really don't understand now. Once fatigue, persistence, full infected are in, it's going to take time to progress across the map. This is the most exciting part of CLE. Maybe I'm reading into it too much, but to me living breathing means changing, that sounds great.

    This is my favorite feature of CLE. I hate marketing, but I just see this adding so much to dayz's long term success. I'm very interested if any other parameters will have the ability to be changed without a update, in real time. Temp., weather, disease sources, foraging availability, hunting availability, infected buffing?Survival is about adapting, and CLE makes the world flexible. I hope It doesn't stop with just loot. Very good report again. Intent>where its at now>where its going....that works.

    First, the Z stands for zero, as in day zero of the infection, right? I'm sure they don't mind everyone thinking it's stands for zombies for the time being. But, they could actually market day zero with full release though. I think it's tough to argue with the environment of Chernarus+, explore the north more, and enjoy those changes moving south. I love arma, but I fully support what your saying, and seems they are doing so. Mouse scroll, yeah they can't wait till that's gone, and it will be.
  15. Have you guys tried the Take On Helicopters flight model? Last I heard (which was years ago), Dean said Dayz would use the flight model. I'm not a bad pilot in Arma, but I'm terrible with the TOH flight model. Without investing in a stick and pedals, forget it. Helicopters should be so rare, most never get the chance to fly, and some have only seen one fly over. And most who try crash the thing. So why invest in something so rare? I know, but it seems that's how they're approaching this game, sandbox.

    I've always assumed it was used on a monitor, but public info is not abundant. TrackIR at the most, I think. I have no problem with changing that, but why change vision? Change weapon handling, fatigue, recoil, dispersion. Those elements can even be part of soft skills. Not sure about dispersion changing for a character, I've never seen this done? Anyone know? As you can see in the video, Dayz isn't replicating the soldiers there. But vision isn't what makes them a soldier.

    Yeah, I'll agree there's something too not wanting it to be clunky. Arma3 has improved this quite a bit though. It zooms in slightly quicker, and it really has a feel of focusing. You can free look and zoom in about the same time that you would turn your head and focus. A2 didn't fell quite as good. From my experience dayz has been closer to A3 than A2. First it was "your eye balls don't zoom", then "you should focus, not zoom", now its "realistic, but clunky, so axe it". I really think the problem is, that your not comfortable with it not being like every other game. In this game or engine 1000 meters should feel like 1000 meters, other games don't do that.

    This was a good status report. Thanks for the paragraph on the technical challenges. I really think it gives everyone more understanding of the huge challenge of creating a multiplayer game. I had a feeling server frame and ticks where being experimented on. But, I only suspected this because a friend has explained these things to me before. Even a small bit of tech explanation can go a long way, which ultimately takes some pressure off you devs from the constant lack of understanding. I know, probably more of a mod idea though. Just think, you would have to escape the island from cannibal campers.

    Yeah, I'm thinking really nasty clothing, like something that you wash up on shore with. :) Either that or spawn everyone in jail cells with prison outfits. It's a jailbreak! Just kidding, but it would be fun though.

    I would really like all the spawns to be on the beach. Maybe laying next to a floatation device. Would give a little context to hungry and dehydrated. Even start with soaked clothes. Many players seem angry about starting out that way. Maybe giving them a reason for it would help. EDIT* Also, not understanding that your energy is so low (at start), leads people to believe you need to constantly eat in dayz, which is not the case. I really like starting out this way, keeps you from running long distances, and creates a first hurdle to overcome.

    This is a great point. I agree, they are not trained soldiers. So how do you simulate this, taking away their ability to see?!?? No you simulate the "usual guy" by weapon characteristics A3 does this better. Inertia, weight, recoil, fatigue, sway. Even dispersion, this is more like the "usual guy" than bad eyesight. So much of any engagement in RV (the engine), is spotting, your ability to do this is more than half of surviving. @Jexter Not sure what running speeds have to do with anything, cant wait for that to go. "you say stupid level of zoom", but it's not really zoom, its natural proportion. You do however always have unnatural zoomed out the entire time, in every game.

    Yeah, I'm partly responsible. So lets just end it there. In a attempt to put on track. I've said I could see the .54 version (not sold yet though). Straight A2 doesn't seem right to me. Where does everyone else see it? (refer to OP) I have a feeling its "all or nothing"......this is a forum :rolleyes:

    I'm not sure about currently, because it has been all across the board since forever. But, I'm sure that was not always the case. And if it is, they're not using their own system to full purpose. Yeah, that would not make sense. :huh: Stomach should be connected to hunger, that's it. I'm betting they changed this because people find it annoying that they are hungry (even though they have energy), and feel they have to do something about it. Guess that's why they are looking into the HUD to explain mech., abit. The other part is, that its been constant changing. These seem to be connected to server frames and engine ticks, every server in experimental had different timing to these. They probably cant fully settle in until everything is more stable.

    I still don't get the OP, you say remove [energy] and replace with [hunger and nutrition]. That's already in game, [hunger and energy] (or calories). Your list of changes are also mostly in game. This is not a difference, right? This explains what is in game. Though I agree this could be expanded. Hydration should be able to max out (like it is), because we are not camels. But, energy (or calories), we do store! So this part could be expanded. Currently, (I think) when food is processed into energy, but energy is full, it disappears. :( This could be put into a fat container variable, then if starving, fat container would deplete. So some players would take longer to starve, that would make sense. If your fat raises too high you cant wear jeans, Just kidding :D Right now, we don't know when the energized sign is given, I think it is around 10,000, which means you can keep eating to get it maxed out 20,000(which can act like fat), most players don't get they're energy this high, because the symbol is vague. That is why they would like to get the HUD statuses in. It shows a stomach and energy level, everyone would understand that you can build energy up very high. You cant die from being hungry. Your just hungry. You die from energy (or calories) being fully depleted, which I think then depletes you health, then death. Blood is there so you can die from wounds. Health can also be affected by disease. I hope so too. I cant really see this staying once game is being completed and persistence reliable. Growing pumpkins in 10 minutes makes no sense, standby for changes, I would suspect.
