Correct, a tent will only survive a reset on a persistence on sever. However, all DayZ SA servers have a weekly maintenance every Wednesday morning (I forget the exact time now but it's something like 7am UK time and lasts about 3 hours) and EVERYTHING not in a player's inventory will get wiped at this time, including deployed tents and their contents. So you can leave your military tent hidden away until Wednesday morning. Bear in mind that the maintenance might start earlier than you think, or that your persistence on server where you stored your tent might be offline, so it's better to pack up sometime on Tuesday. Two final things. As you have probably realised, the military tent is so big you can only carry it in place of a backpack - so most people don't actually bother with them as they are just not practical yet. The other thing is that they are so big that they are very difficult to hide well, certainly compared to regular tents. If someone finds your tent they can take the contents and even the tent itself. In my opinion, the military tents are not very practical at the moment.

[SUGGESTION] More persistence server options!
krazypenguin replied to theswedishcathead's topic in Suggestions
Yes, agreed. But, and it's an important but, in addition to this the persistence state of the server should also be a column shown in the server list which is automatically set. Relying on the server admin to put the correct persistence state in the server description is very poor. (Also, in an ideal world, admins should not be allowed to change the persistence state at the flick of a switch - there should be a period where players are given the chance to grab their gear. I recently lost my stash (yeah, yeah, don't get attached to your gear, etc...) because my otherwise excellent, long time, persistence on "home" server decided to switch to persistence off without any warning or notification. That's an annoying way to lose your gear) -
Meat. what does it say when its get cooked.
krazypenguin replied to Survivor1965's topic in New Player Discussion
The fire has to be out - also, the stones are not hot when you put them into your inventory, i.e. they do not warm you up. That's probably a good thing since I tend to become "Hot" every time I try to cook these days!!Edit - whilst fires are persistent I don't know if ovens (fires with 8 stones on them) are, nor if a tripod and cooking pot are - I did try to test but my server seems to have either become persistence off or just lost all loot since everything vanished yesterday (i.e. long after the Wednesday maintenance). -
Noted, thanks. Beans given!

Meat. what does it say when its get cooked.
krazypenguin replied to Survivor1965's topic in New Player Discussion
This was my entry into the "How was your Day(Z)?" thread a few days ago: ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Did a LOAD of cooking tests today, using every combination of heat source and cooking utensil. The frying pan and gas burners don't work at all, via any method. Don't bother with either of them for the moment, they are just dead inventory space. You cannot put meat directly into any fire (it just becomes ruined without actually cooking at all) so a cooking pot is mandatory. The good news is that it can hold 8 pieces of steak but only takes 4 slots itself, so it's very efficient. The cooking pot can be used over a regular fireplace kit (i.e. an open fire) if you hang it from the cooking tripod. If you don't use a tripod, the pot just gets ruined. One thing to note is that you cannot add meat to the cooking pot (or frying pan) whilst it is in your inventory or on the fire. Instead you need to place it onto the ground and add the meat to it via the vicinity window. If you don't have a tripod you can search for stones until you find 8 small stones (they can be stacked in your inventory to save space) which you can add to the fireplace to craft a stone oven. The cooking pot can be added directly to the stone oven and will cook the steaks. Once the fire has gone out the 8 stones can be detached and returned to your inventory to be used again. Fireplaces need a full stack of 5 sticks for fuel or 3 firewood. Sticks take 2 slots, firewood take 4 and both burn for the same amount of time (around 7-8 minutes) so I see no point in using firewood. However, if you do want to use firewood note that you can stack 3 pieces into a single 2x2 slot but not in your inventory. Instead you need to combine them whilst they are in the vicinity window, then put them into your own inventory, carry them to the fireplace and then add them to the fire. You cannot add them to the fireplace kit separately, they must be stacked first. Food takes less than a minute to cook. There is no change to the icon or description, just the colour of the meat. There are only 3 colours so it's easy to tell what stage it is at. The first colour is a pinky colour and indicates the meat is raw. It then changes to a brown colour when it is cooked before turning black when it is burned. I could not find a way to extinguish a fire once it is lit. Prior to 0.53 you could simply remove the fuel, but now you cannot. I always have to let my fire burn out. However, a fireplace will not fit into a 5x5 backpack anyway so I have not yet managed to pick one up once placed, though you can drag it from the vicinity window to outside the vicinity window which will move it on the floor, if only a little and without much control. Fireplaces are persistant items so will remain in place on persistance enabled servers, though they will be wiped during the weekly maintenance on Wednesday. Take care to place them away from any stash you have in case they attract unwanted attention. I'm currently packing a full cooking kit consisting of cooking pot, frying pan, cooking tripod, a gas burner, 8 stones, a box of matches, sticks and rags to make the fireplace kit and lots of raw steaks so if anyone wants anything specifically tested\timed\whatever, or if you just have any queries about cooking, let me know and I'll be happy to try and help. Some images ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Edit - One additional thing to add, at the moment the Carp fish that you can catch with the fishing rod in ponds, lakes and streams etc.. seems to be bugged and cannot be cooked via ANY method. -
... and maybe a crowbar. ... and maybe some beef jerkey, a camelback for water, an overunder 20 gauge shot 22 rifle, some rope, giant box of matches, a decent backpack, a pot to boil water in, a blanket, a small tarp, and a rolled up yoga mat (to sleep on... and maybe do yoga if I got bored even though I suck at it) Given the gif in your signature, this does not surprise me at all! P.S. - Awesome film :-)

Let's be honest, there's no point me even thinking about this - I think I would just die very quickly. I have no practical survival skills, I have never hunted or caught an animal (even fish), never had to kill an animal nor prepare it. I would have no idea about what to do or how to do it and, whilst survival is a great motivator, I'm just not sure it's in me to do these things. Even worse, I have no fitness which, as I understand it, is key to survivlal. Nor am I very strong or aggressive. Faced with a zombie\infected person trying to hurt me I am not convinced I would be able to sufficiently repress all my years of "it's not ok to hurt other people" and actually kill it - certainly not without sustaining damage myself in the process. And that's very important because unlike films\TV and games, when people get hurt and are ok 3 minutes later, in reality people stay hurt for a long time and it can severely impact their ability, not to mention the risk of infection, etc... Lastly, and perhaps most importantly, I have no idea if I could cope psychologically. Grimey Rick - you got room in that car for one more please? ;-)
-
OP is correct, there is no cancel action for drinking from a well, which is very annoying. Your point about being sure there are no zombies around before you drink is valid as far as that goes but is otherwise unfair - what if a sniper starts shooting you from 500+ metres away? Sorry, must complete drinking before taking evasive action! No, it needs a cancel action or, better still, the ability to simply move away immediately exactly as the OP suggests. Also, drinking from wells and ponds is now WAY too time consuming. I know they changed it recently to stop players from simply mashing "drink" 10 times in a row and becoming fully hydrated with one drink action but they've gone too far the other way now. It needs to be balanced so we get a bit more hydration from a single drink action.

A (Former) Good Guy at the End of his Patience's Rant

Since when has the solution to the problem been to become part of the problem? Have faith, a single good encounter is worth a dozen KoS encounters. -
You need to tell me how to fish for sardines please! I found 3 water bottles and made fish traps. I put them all in the sea, one empty, the second with one worm in it and the third with 5 worms in it. I checked them every 5 minutes for 20 minutes - nothing. What am I doing wrong?!? Gave up, ran up to Svetlojarsk where I killed about 2 dozen infected with a Mosin and a shotgun. In a game where I am terrified of attracting the attention of other players and very rarely ever fire the guns I find, there's something incredibly theraputic about standing in the middle of a medium sized town gunning down infected like there's no tomorrow, without a care in the world. The Mosin in particular seems to be so loud that it attracts every infected within 5 miles. Anyway, my insanity was rewarded by not meeting another player (who knows, maybe I scared someone away?!) so I eventually got bored and left. Then I used my knowledge of Chernarus to navigate the entire run back to my base without needing a map and was very pleased with myself to cover such a long distance without getting lost once. When I got to my base I found that ALL of my stash was missing. For a second I thought that maybe it had been discovered and taken but then I realised that wasn't the case. My stash is made up of a lot of bags scattered over a wide area and they were all missing which seemed unlikely plus, more tellingly, both of my fireplaces were gone. Those cannot (to the best of my knowledge) be moved once created, so I think the server must have lost them or something. Anyway, hopefully everything will come back next time it resets but if not it's no big deal :-)

"The Dilemma" - there are two sides to every story, in DayZ sometimes you only have a few seconds to decide which is the right one.

My hunch.....you choose right. Great video, as usual. -
I lost my kitchen knife and haven't found a replacement yet. But I tested preparing Carp (the ones you catch with a rod, not in the fish trap) with both a steak knife and the improvised stone knife and both worked correctly. The steak knife was damaged so only gave 49% and 40% fillets, whereas the pristine improvised stone knife yielded 95% and 90% fillets. However, this proved to be a moot test for me as I then discovered that I couldn't get them to cook at all... Edit - just to clarify, I tried ALL forms of cooking - cooking pot on a tripod, cooking pot in a stone oven, same with a frying pan and also both with gas burner. Looks like cooking fish might be bugged in 0.53.

Not sure who you are directing this at, but I'll answer for myself. I used to be a hoarder. I think this is natural for many people, since you start with nothing, resources on the coast can be scarce and even later on some items are seen only very rarely, especially on persistance enabled servers which seem to suffer from odd loot distributions. Basically, it's human nature to hoard supplies anyway and the game encourages grabbing whatever loot you can find even if you don't need it. Add to this, I personally lacked the knowledge of how to hunt, how to cook meat and I never maintained a stash - meaning I had no confidence in my ability and nowhere to fall back onto. Therefore, I had to carry as much as I could all the time as I roved across the map. In the last 2 weeks I spent time learning where to hunt, how to cook and natural water is (currently) safe to drink, so food and drink aren't an issue for me anymore. But the main thing that lets me travel light is the stash I keep. My stash is in the woods near 4 towns which are off the coast and away from the main loot runs and military locations, The stash is my key to travelling light. Ideally, I find rope and burlap sacks to make improvised courier bags and hide them in long grass or the edge of trees (tip - stay away from the trunk - trying to put a bag too close to the trunk causes it to appear 3 feet off the ground and become inaccessable). I put anything that I need to hang on to but not actively carry into these bags. I keep my actual backpack virtually empty. Then I raid a town at speed, even ones a long way away, taking anything rare (like pistol mags) or useful (rope, matches if I don't have any), but leaving most of the basic stuff, like cans and sodas, that a new survivor might need. I try not to take essential survival items that I don't desperately need myself. I avoid PvP so I don't buy into the whole "I need 4 guns, 8 mags and 200 rounds of ammo" ethos that some people seem to have. I like to carry a rifle (SKS is preferable but ammo is rare outside military zones so typically I go for a Repeater with its built in 11 round mag and easily found ammo) and a sawn off shotgun (fits in my backpack, is great for killing infected and if you can find a snap loader, it effectively has a 4 round capability). I carry 1 or 2 stacks of ammo for each gun I have, purely for redundancy in case 1 stack gets ruined. For a melee weapon I like a splitting axe or fireaxe and I carry an improvised stone knife for any cutting work, including opening cans. I carry 2 stacks of rags (again, in case one of them gets ruined), 4-6 items of food (usually steaks) and a canteen. For clothes I prefer to avoid the hardcore military stuff as it tends to look very threatening and I don't like most of the locations where it can spawn. Instead, I go for a raincoat (because getting wet is a pain), a 6 slot pair of trousers (I prefer both of these in green to make me harder to spot but at the same time, a brighter colour can be less threatening to other players), some sort of assault vest or leather vest for extra storage and any backpack, though i have a thing for natural bags and smaller bags like the taloon. Obviously, the hunting backpack is my preferred choice, though I am starting to become attached to the SPOSN for some reason and when they sort out the rain\damp thing, it being waterproof will actually matter. Once I have raided a town I return to my stash where I store the loot and resupply on food and drink. Then I am ready for the next run. Depending on my destination these runs can last several hours or longer so when i leave I'll make sure I am carrying enough food to stay energised all the way there, but I'll use natural water sources for hydration - I only carry a single canteen for emergency use. I also always jog, not sprint, even over long distances, as this conserves energy and hydration levels. When I go on a raid I only need to carry a very small amount of equipment because I can leave most of the stuff in my stash. The biggest problem is making sure that I am back at the stash in time to sort through everything I have and choose what I want to keep and what I am happy to lose prior to the server maintenance every Wednesday.

They can technically spawn in a lot of places but it feels to me like they are more common in out-buildings, like sheds, garages and small workshop type buildings. Basically, any rural building that's not a house - places like these: The best way to find lots of them is to stop wanting them - then you'll find them everywhere... ;-)
-
Fireplaces are definitely persistent - cannot advise about the tripods at the moment though, sorry
-
It comes in a few colours but it's this house. It's marked on the DayZ map as being a spawn point for a medium loot type weapon but it never, ever has anything in it. I hate this house.

Is direct communication (typing) working?
krazypenguin replied to bunkers's topic in General Discussion
Were you in the correct direct communication method? You can press a button (I think it's the full stop "." key) to switch between direct communication and vehicle only - something like that anyway. Could it be that? -

Well played sir! -
No. Even if they are broken and a bit rubbish they are better than nothing and, at the absolute minimum, they are good as alarm systems to warn you if another player is nearby. Also, they cause me issues when I am carrying a rfile in my hands because I already have one on my back. Do I just shoot the damn thing which will make a load of noise and advertise my position to everyone within a mile, or risk dropping the gun and switch to melee weapon?
-
Unlucky :-( Next time you find a gun you want to keep but no ammo for it stash it under an out of the way tree somewhere on a persistence on server. Then you can go hunting for mags and ammo in the most dangerous places safe in the knowledge that if you get killed you can just try again without losing the gun itself (just remember that evwn persistence on servers are wiped every Wednesday during maintenance).

I use Action, albeit only very infrequently as I have not yet spent any time optimising my FPS whilst recording with it. Recently, I have updated DayZ to 0.53, applied an update to Action itself and also to my anti-virus software, which is AVG. After these 3 updates I noticed that the Action "HUD" was missing. Managed to get it back by going into AVG advanced settings, then shell extensions and releasing the 2 Action files listed there. Mentioning it here in case it helps anyone with a similar issue...
-
Yes, same here. Reported 4 Fragnet servers on 1 ticket about 4 days ago and didn't hear a thing. Today I got 15 emails from them, all with different ticket IDs. P.S. Have beans for reporting abuse :-)
-
Looking good Eno!! But....everytime I've seen someone look like that it's been closely followed by a black screen and the words "You are dead" so if I saw you coming down the coast road dressed and armed like that I would run a mile! ;-) Edit - a small update re cooking. I've seen a few posts about it but it's easy to miss so I just wanted to state here for anyone who might read this thread, that cooking in 0.53 has changed. create a fire as normal then add a tripod to it. Put a cooking pot on the flootfloor (in the vicinity window of your inventory) and add the meat to the pot. Then put the pot onto the tripod. Meat cooks much quicker than before, taking only a minute or so. Another big change is that the meat icon doesn't move or change like it used to so you need to watch the colour of the meat. As soon as it changes from the initial pinkish colour to the brown colour it's cooked - remove it straight away. It will stay in this condition for maybe 15 seconds or so and then go to an obviously burned colour. I'll try and add some screenshots tonight.
-
Kudos, well beanz, to you! I'm not sure I'll ever bother with the bow and arrow and, whilst the crossbow is tempting, bolts can be hard to find - whereas .357 ammo for my Repeater is pretty much everywhere. Maybe if I find a shotgun to saw off and store in my backpack... Agreed re the colour - we need to be able to spray/dye it green and/or dark brown.
