Action!- Gameplay recording and streaming
krazypenguin replied to trankin's topic in General Discussion
It's caused by the recent (patch 0.54 IIRC) update to BattleEye. BattleEye will NOT give Mirillis Action! an exception and Mirillis will not change the way that Action! works. Impasse. However, there is a work around (apparently - not actually tried it myself yet) from this thread on the Mirillis forums: As a temporary work around, anyone still wishing to record DayZ using Action! Launch the game in windowed mode, and use the "Active desktop region" mode to select the game area. It works fine! It's a little bit extra work, but it should keep people recording in the meantime! Good luck! -
I've had a funny old DayZ recently. My solo pub character hasn't done much and nothing much has happened to him. I've reached a plateau with him where he's fully geared to the level that I want (SKS, sawn-off shotgun & Magnum, decent clothing, etc...) and explored all of the map. So, whilst I am perfectly happy to run around, unless I actively decide to seek out other players or visit high danger locations, there's not much for him to do. Fortunately, my friend DC has been on a lot recently and we've been playing together on various private servers where we already have partially geared characters near each other. My third ever player kill came from such a character. We'd both died at the NWAF having met an assault rifle armed player (tip - a shotgun versus AK battle goes badly for the shotgun player, especially if I am the shotgun player) and DC got a Novo spawn and I got a Berezino spawn - close enough. I sprinted North to join him and managed to find a motorbike helmet, SKS with 16 rounds and a splitting axe. Since the route I had chosen took me near Cernaya Polana I decided to drop in to the fire station to see if I could find a fire axe. It seemed very quiet so my guard was down as I walked to the metal shelves at the foot of the stairs. There I saw a Magnum - I'm having that, so I stood in front of the shelves and opened my inventory to make a little room for the gun. Clang clang clang! Someone is on the stairs right above me!! I mash the button to close my inventory, spin round and start to run. I get to the furthest doors and turn to see a guy in a motorbike helmet with a fire axe held above his head charging at me. I say "it's ok, I'm friendly!" but he keeps charging at me. I turn and run, taking a straight route down the road, looking over my shoulder as I go. The guy is still chasing me with his axe out so I have pulled a short way ahead of him. I've told him I'm friendly, I've tried to get away, but he's still trying to kill me so he's obviously a PVP maniac. Fine. At maybe 30 metres, I turn and pull out my SKS. I try and remember how to do this. No time to crouch, and besides I want to stay mobile, so I stay standing, but I do aim down the rifle. He sees the danger, obviously, and starts to jink like mad. I try and hit him with a trio of careful shots but I don't see to hit him. At close range his speed and ability to change direction is just too quick. In a panic as he finally comes into melee range I release the remaining 7 shots in a hail of fire. He swings and hit me. Gun empty, with no melee weapon out, I bolt, holstering my gun as I go. Luck has been with me as somehow his axe has seemingly done me no damage and I look over my shoulder as I run to see him still chasing me but he's bleeding - I've hit him! Ok, that's a game changer and all I need to do now is play smart and safe and I can walk away from this. We run through the town for a few streets and pick up 3 zombies before I break out of the buildings, still being chased by a bleeding maniac and 3 zombies, and reach a field. This ends here, but like I said, play it safe and take the least amount of risks possible. I spend the next 4-5 minutes running in squares around the field, still being chased, with the maniac taking swipes at me whenever he gets close enough. It feels like forever but finally the guy drops. I run over to check his pulse (and see his name) but he's already respawned. I grab his fire axe and kill the zombies. On reflection I wonder what I would have done if he had broken contact after we had hit each other. Prior to that, back at the fire station, I definitely would have been happy to break contact and just leave. I'm cool with that. But after he continued to attack me, and actually hit me, even though I warned him off? Hmm... Once he was bleeding the ball was definitely in my court - if he had attempted to get away to bandage himself I could have reversed the roles and started chasing him. And maybe I would have, it would have been nothing less than he deserved. Anyway, I didn't have to make that decision - he made it for me. But it's something to think about...

Was not playing for 6 months... what's the Top 10 things I should be doing?
krazypenguin replied to cuddly_rabbit's topic in New Player Discussion
1 - Try surviving the DayZ mini-game "Truck Driver!" Your mission is to try surviving 5 minutes of driving a truck without rolling it or glitching through the floor (actually, I've had no problem with trucks myself but lots of people do) 2 - Get to da chopper! Not sure when choppers were added but if they are less than 6 months old then why not combine Truck Driver! with "Chopper Hunter!" Look for crashed US helicopters (easy to find thanks to the black smoke) and Russian choppers (slightly harder as there is no smoke) 3 - Turn DayZ running simulator into DayZ swimming simulator by... 4 - Playing "Prisoner Cell Block Dead" where you visit the new prison island and get involved in a humungous firefight 5 - Try your hand at hunting animals. Thanks to the recent AI change this is virtually impossible as all animals come equipped with state of the art, survivor tracking GPS\radar systems, making it virtually impossible to get within a mile of a cow. However, if you CAN take one down you can then try.. 6 - Cooking. Make a fire and then use a tripod and cooking pot to cook soe delicious steaks. Yummy! But don't waste that animal skin because now you can... 7 - Tan the animal hide using lime. Make the snazzy new leather clothes (tip - only the leather stroage vest and maybe the backpack are really worth it) 8 - Boldy go where no survivor has gone before! Visit the new Northern areas of Chernarus for some really nice locations, generally unspoilt by hordes of PVPing players 9 - Go natural - search for a stone and make an improvised stone knife. Find an Ash tree and make a bow, then grab some feathers and sticks to make arrows. 10 - Get to the top of the tower in Novo, jump off and press "9" to activate your new, built-in parachute and glide down to the ground. Awesome feeling! * * 10 might be a lie, I ran out of ideas. -
I want a horn on the V3S....beep beep!!

krazypenguin replied to ShadowProphesy's topic in New Player Discussion
Click on your name at the top right hand corner of this screen and then click on "Settings" which appears underneath it. On the Settings page you will see "Signature" about halfway down on the left hand side. You can click on that to go to the page where you can insert whatever text \ image \ link etc... you want. Just check the forum rules first, in case there are any restrictions! ;-) -

Dayz Standalone map or english?!
krazypenguin replied to ShadowProphesy's topic in New Player Discussion
Oh, I do agree, 100%. But, you know... -
This. For some people PVP will always be the "end game" whilst others are the type who want to watch the world burn types, no matter what. But I personally welcome the idea of turning the infected from their current annoyance state into a serious challenge.

Dayz Standalone map or english?!
krazypenguin replied to ShadowProphesy's topic in New Player Discussion
Your post conflicts me a little. Whilst I agree with most of your points, particularly the ones about immersion and generally needing a sense of direction anyway, saying that using the online map is cheating is disingenious at best. Tell me, when your character dies do you smash your own real life head against a wall until you get amnesia and forget everything you know about DayZ? No? Then...you cheat. Right? Same thing really... but what the heck, have some beans anyway. -
TMRZ is definitely my favourite DayZ youtuber\streamer - well done dude!

From the highest possible high, to the lowest low. Taking a Trumpet to the Prison Island.

Trumpeter.....worst gun in the game? ;-) I don't understand what happened at the end in the water? Did you just glitch and break your legs? Also, even with broken legs, can't you still stand up, at least in place? Might have stopped you drowning if you could stand up, get your breath back, then crawl back to the island to find some kindling and make a splint...(easier to say this whilst watching the video than when you are playing and streaming, I guess!) As always, beanz for a great video! -
Medkits hold 6 medical items in the space of 4 which is great, but realistically, what medical items do you actually need unless you hardcore PVP in a group? Rags, that's it. Don't keep them in your pants in case you suffer fall damage and your pants, and therefore their contents, get ruined. Thing is, the same sort of applies to all locations, e.g. store them in your jacket but get attacked by a zombie and you risk losing them. That's why I always keep 2 full stacks of rags (6 each) in different locations - usually a stack in my jacket and a stack in my backpack. 2 slots total - still more efficient than a medical kit. If you do PVP hardcore in a group then yes a medkit makes sense, otherwise, not so much. To answer OP's query about inventory space.... I tried to work out the maximum number of slots once and ended up with something in the region of 68 for clothing alone. Very roughly... Boonie hat (1) - but fishing hook only so I didn't count this Combat boots (1) - but combat knife only so I didn't count this Tan\Black M65 Jacket (8) Smersh Vest with Backpack (16) Mountain Backpack (38) Cargo\Gorka trousers (6) That's 68 slots...but you can fit small protector cases inside any 2x2 space and turn those 4 slots into 6...and by my calculations you could fit 11 cases into that set up which turns 44 spaces into 66, i.e. 22 more. 68 + 22 = 90 slots...by my admittedly possibly inaccurate calculations. P.S. In case anyone is interested, according to the UK's leading baked beans manufacturer there is an average of 465 beans per can so if you carried a full load out of 90 cans of beans you would be carrying 90*465 = 41,850 beans!

v3s climbing (even more) nerfed in 0.54?
krazypenguin replied to ThePhilosopher's topic in General Discussion
What sort of truck was it? The 2 seater or the one with the cargo bay? Reason for asking is... ^^^ these guys were using the one with the cargo bay which does seem to be super-duper slow even on flat terrain. However, I have extensively travelled the map in multiple regular (i.e. non-cargo) V3S trucks since 0.54 hit and they are much, much quicker than they used to be - I can drive uphill from a standing start without boost and it actually moves. In fact, if anything, they may have been buffed a little too much!. Some V3S related ramblings - http://forums.dayzgame.com/index.php?/topic/210239-how-was-your-dayz/page-25#entry2228824 -
Anyone who doesn't smash their own real life head against a wall*, thus giving themselves amnesia and therefore forgetting everything they know about DayZ whenever their character dies is a metagaming cheat. *don't do this please - it's just a joke taken to an obviously extreme length to illustrate the point that when your character dies your new character is not supposed to be the same person and therefore you, as the person controlling that character, should not have any of the knowledge that you do.

Lol, nice :-) I have only visited prison island once. I was on a persistence off private server with a newish, but definitely throw away, character. I swam from way to the North and landed on the rocks on the Northern shore of the prison island itself, hoping to arrive without being spotted. I heard a couple of rifle shots but knew they weren't aimed at me so I climbed up the rocks at the back of the island and moved around the dead end side, just to make sure that the wall was intact (have seen a video where guys blow the wall down with grenades) but mainly to make sure that my back would be clear when I went around to the front. All clear, time to go. I walk around the other side and it's suspiciously quiet. I am aware that this side is highly visible from across the bridge but it seems clear. I approach the tunnel that enters the bridge and peek carefully around the corner - there are 2 players at the other end just standing there with their backs to me! They look like newish spawns (no military gear or guns, just regular coats and rifles slung on their backs) and if I were a PVPer these guys would both be dead by now. But I'm not so I pull back to the rear of the island to consider my options. Wise move. Not 2 minutes later there's a burst of automatic fire and I risk a glance back around the side to see 3 full on military types lying on the bridge. I have no idea who they are shooting but they seem to be covering the tunnel entrance and somewhere across the bridge at the same time. But just like the other 2 I saw they have neglected to check their rear. I consider my options before deciding that the kindest thing to do would be to educate them on their military failings by emptying all 6 cartridges from my Magnum into the wall next to them - so that next time they know to check their rear. Plus, they just look like the sort of tough macho guys who love a challenge and what could be more challenging than having to defend yourself from 3 directions at the same time? So my Magnum rings out half a dozen times and you can tell that all 3 players are having heart attacks from the surprise "attack" in an unexpected direction. Satisfied with my work I hide in a tree at the back of the island and log off so I can come back when it's quieter. Turns out karma really is a bitch. I log back in a few days later and there's no one else on the server. Woo hoo, free reign to explore the prison! I walk forwards out of the tree and slip on some boulders, fly out into space and splat onto the rocks below: "You are dead." Well played karma, well played.

Tricky one, but after much deliberation I voted private. There are pros and cons to both, but my biggest concern about using a public server is that any group of geared bandits could just hop in behind security mid-event and cause chaos. On a private server that's still possible, but it's less likely. Also, people are probably more protective of their public character and gear than a new character on a private server (assuming it's unlikely that many will already have a geared character on whichever server is chosen).
