I don't really see why not. At the very least, it could be a status effect (like damp). However, I don't see why it'd not be possible to add. Add a red, translucent overlay to the texture for the item of clothing that's covering wherever's bleeding. It slowly spreads out as you bleed more. There's a few ways that this could be implemented and, as I don't know exactly how the engine works, I can't really say how this could work, but it should be pretty possible. This is, however, something that I imagine would be considered in the later stages of development.

Awesome ideas. I really like the fact that houses can randomly be locked too. Makes it less likely that every single house that's locked will get checked and therefore makes it more likely that a barricaded base might go unnoticed. Would be good to have a range of different locks & door types spawn on random houses though so that well protected bases don't stand out. Though, there are basic locked doors already, implying that this is already being worked on. :P

Personally, when being a hero, I prefer to roleplay as a member of the salvation army. Of course, by the salvation army, I mean my own organization which incidentally has the same name as the charitable organization. It consists of running around preaching about how you can be saved if you give yourself over to your zombie overlords. Sinners (bandits) get a shortcut with a bullet to the head and freshies get a ration of food and medical supplies. Of course, they use them to follow my advice and make their way to the nearest zombie to die... Right? I also decided to be nice to a freshie and supply him with a full ghillie suit that I'd made and didn't want any more... Not sure if it was such a heroic act, however, as I'm pretty sure the guy I killed later for sniping people in Elektro was him... So yeah.

Honestly, I think the best solution would just be to repeatedly kill any detected hacker until they turn off their hacks. Their bodies should be automatically hidden, also, to remove hacked loot from the game.

Does anyone know of a truly stealth player on YT or Twitch?
Beizs replied to RAM-bo4250's topic in General Discussion
Haha, here's hoping you would have enjoyed it. If I ever decide to go back to YouTube (which I have like 7 or 8 times over x years), I'll try to remember to point you in my direction. :P I get where you're coming from dude and YouTube has always just been a hobby for me. However, it is something that I love doing and, if I had the chance, would be something I'd dream about as my job. I think that's where most people who do YouTube are at. I actually have more fun commentating over a game than I do just straight up playing it. However, making videos can be a lot of work (not sure what kind of thing you do, but I'm sure you've experienced at least some of that). I don't really enjoy the editing, rendering and uploading process that much - like most other small YouTubers I know. It's kind of a chore and a means to an end (getting to do the stuff that you did enjoy - recording the videos). So, I think that it's more the fact that people want to set themselves up to achieve what their dream is - which, for most who do YouTube, is being able to do YouTube as a job. This generally means that they'll do stuff that they think (or know) will get them more views. I completely understand that. For me however, the reason I stopped doing it was because I put a lot of work into editing, rendering (and would watch through every video to check for A/V issues anywhere) and uploading (I did a lot of SEO type stuff etc). The return wasn't good enough. Most people need something to keep them going. For some, it's money. For me, it's more just knowing that at least some people were watching my videos. My more successful channels (two which had 1500 subscribers) lasted longer than any of my others (one closed because I lived with my brother at the time, who played a lot of loud, copyrighted music. The other got deleted when I unlinked from Google+. I asked them to fix it, they promised they would. Two weeks later, the channel returned with half of the videos missing and completely wiped stats (views, subs etc). They never returned another E-Mail.) because I constantly had people talking to me in the comments, suggesting things, giving me tips and just saying they enjoyed the video. I never made money from YouTube, but it was just nice to know that I was actually entertaining people. If I'm not entertaining people, then I can't keep the motivation up to do it. Ergo, in order to maintain a YouTube channel, I, at least, need to get views on my videos. -

I can vouch that you're unlikely to find anybody doing that. I've had a few different channels in the past, none of them particularly large (four or five around 1k subs). On the last two channels I've had, I recorded DayZ a reasonable amount. I originally wanted to just play how I normally do (which is lone wolf, stealthy, live off the land then occasionally go and kill some bandits). That didn't get any interest, while even my vanilla Minecraft Let's Plays would draw in a reasonable crowd (considering channel size). I did some heavily edited PVP crazy stuff and those videos were some of the most viewed on my channel. I know a few people who do YouTube (irl and online) who play DayZ and none of them would join me in playing the game how I wanted. It was just a PvP thing to them because they wanted to get views, which is fair enough. The second one, I decided 'fuck it, I'm playing how I want'. That's my 'current' channel that I have just given up on as it had almost no growth after living for 6 months (29 sub record, whereas previous channels that lasted that long always had at the very least 800+). It just kind of sucks for people who DO want to watch that kind of thing. There's quite a large number, I believe, but because the YouTube community is so over saturated they settle for easy-to-find YouTubers who are close enough to what they want and those who are perfect for them go unnoticed. Just my two cents after three (might be more) years of YouTube experience. -
I have to do this now.

Personally, when my hands are cold, I just rub them together a bit. No moisturization issues with that. I'd also like to see the ability to walk with your hands in your pockets, reducing hand shake drastcially, but limiting you to a light jog (and slowing the rate at which you can pull out a weapon a little).

Did use this experimental update for a short while yesterday. Everything seemed completely fine to me (I rubberbanded once about 10m on login, but after that, if anything, performance both server-wise and computer wise seemed better). Servers are down now though, so probably going to hop back to standard until the next update.

This game is an MMO. MMO's do not suit sequels. Unless this game is still relevant in 10 years time and they feel like completely rebuilding it to get it up to date with modern technlogy of that time, there is absolutely no reason for them to make a sequel to it.

Server hopping? Is there a solution? If not, what else....

This. I can see where they're coming from, but in the current state of the game, it's not a good idea at all. -
Server hopping? Is there a solution? If not, what else....
Beizs replied to rickyriot's topic in General Discussion
Private hives counter server hopping. What I would suggest, however, would be to make it so that you can only change servers once every however long. If a server restarts. it doesn't count as a hop if you join a new one. If you're kicked, it doesn't count as a hop when you join a new one. Outside of that, however, you should be limited to maybe two different servers a day or something along those lines. If the restart/kick detection works properly (and it shouldn't be much of an issue) there shouldn't be an issue with this. Would also be nice to see some kind of desync & ping tracker with this system though so that, should you be unlucky and join servers that quickly get real bad, you aren't locked to them for the day. The main reason I'd suggest this over just using private hives to avoid hoppers is that there's a constant worry that the server might disappear one day. It's happened to me a couple times in the last month, after all. Seeing as how the private hives are, currently, hosted alongside the public one, it'd be nice to see some kind of safety net for this. Like, if your server gets shut down, the next private hive you join where you don't have a character already gets your character from the dead server assigned to it. Should go for persistent items on public servers too, as well as servers where they switch persistence off or change from third person to first person only (or vice versa). Could be achieved through regular backups of your characters (but only keeps the latest version) and checks on whether the server is still alive or not. Would be useful to have some kind of UI to see all of your characters on different servers. -
So, I decided to go ahead and optimize my DayZ today. I'd not really been having issues other than when first entering built up areas, at which point I'd see some drops and such before it evened out. In the past, when I first played the game, I'd be getting around 20-60fps. Since, I've upgraded my GPU (massively) and my CPU (again, massively). I noticed that the game now is a lot nicer to play. It feels fairly smooth and doesn't feel like it has a low frame rate... But then, today, I went ahead and got FRAPS to check the framerates. Now, I want to stress that the game does not feel like it's running at a low framerate. It actually looks like it's running at 60fps to me. I can tell the difference between 30 and 60fps very well generally, but there's a glaring issue here. FRAPS is reporting like 16 FPS inside of cities... While, actually playing the game, it feels perfectly smooth. So, has anybody else had any kinds of issues with FRAPS reporting frame rates? Any other game, if its frame rate is that low, I find it unplayable. I'm actually very happy with how smooth DayZ is for me. So, what gives? I feel completely fine playing at the reported 16FPS in first or third person, while, on other games, 20 and below is unbearable for me. EDIT: Since optimizing it, it seems smoother... Yet it's reporting lower framerates, btw. Before, I'd rarely see it drop below 40fps reported. I'm wondering if it's a similar deal to some of the older games that I play that only render new frames when they actually need to due to some setting I've tweaked? Really, really confused.
-
Nope, I do this kind of thing with every game I play. I'm sure that there's something up with FRAPS now. I switched over to Minecraft quickly (which, by the way, gives me regular framerates of 500+ on higher settings when I'm not recording - which is notable as DayZ and Minecraft are both CPU heavy games) and turned the max FPS down to 20 to compare the games. Obviously it's not a great comparison as they're very differently styled, but DayZ felt infinitely smoother than Minecraft at 20fps. I had an issue similar to this a while ago with DXTory after one of my drivers messed up OpenGL and DXTory working together, though the FPS only reported incorrectly when I was actually recording back then.

Persistence isn't the issue here. The issue is cleanup and respawning items. I'd say that, any items that aren't guns or backpacks/containers (with items stored inside of them) should get cleaned up on a regular basis. Backpacks, if not interacted with for a long time, should also be cleaned. Tents, etc, never need to be cleaned. If there's enough players on a server, it will be found. If there's not, then the server will never get bugged down from its persistence. Items not inside of a container (backpacks, small protector cases, ammo crates) slowly deteriorates until it reaches ruined. Any ruined items get deleted when they're not within the view of a player. Health packs would need to deteriorate outside of a different container as they spawn with items inside of them. These items are all fully persistent, they just degrade if left on the floor. Guns should not be included in this, unless they add rotation of items to fit weapons inside of backpacks. If this happens, however, they should degrade also and need to be stored in backpacks etc to keep them safe. Respawn system just needs to look at amounts of loot in a certain area, with a target for each section of the map (the smaller, the better) and periodically spawn more loot to meet these targets. The CLE will control what loot spawns and voila, everything works great.

Bringing a phone does not make it luxury camping. First, if you're alone, sorry, but you're a fool to not take a phone (emergency situations and if you get truly lost). There's wanting to be alone in the wild and there's just being irresponsible. The thing about twisiting your words is bull. I didn't say that YOU couldn't, I said that MOST couldn't do those things. This poses an issue in game as either everybody has to be capable, or nobody can be capable. I can make fires using a variety of methods, purify water through a variety of methods, create basic knives if I need to, build structures ranging from very basic to building shed like buildings (or cabins) given enough time and basic tools (hammer, though a rock suffices, nails and a saw). I know how to fish (spearing included) and how to skin and prepare a range of animals. I can also cultuvate plants (with a knowledge of safe plants to eat in my area) and perform basic medical procedures in theory (never had to do anything, luckily). But most people can't. I want to be able to do these things in game, as I know how to in real life. I'm fine with the fact that this means other people are able to in game, even if they're not able to in real life. I agree with that last part about preppers and survivalists, though.

POLL: How happy are you with the buildings and map?
Beizs replied to ColonelBurton's topic in General Discussion
They've said that it's unlikely that they'll ever be able to make the map bigger. Because of this, I don't want them adding too much more. I'd like to see them work on existing towns etc, but, honestly, the map feels fairly crowded to me. Sure, I run very fast, but even taking that in to account, there's not enough countryside left over. If you run in the right direction, you're never more than ten minutes from a town or village. It's ridiculous. I'd like to see them either find a way to make the map bigger or, if they can't, take out some of the smaller towns. Then they should revamp the remaining ones with more unique buildings, possibly increase the size of some of the cities and such. I feel like there's a lot of stuff there for the sake of it, not for any kind of level design reasons. As for things like supermarkets, I agree to a point. There shouldn't be anything absolutely huge, but a couple of larger shops would be nice. Just not superstore level. Prison would be nice, along with some of the military stuff, tunnels would be awesome, but nothing more. Just doesn't fit the aesthetic of the game. A small, richer area might be nice, but I'm not entirely sure what purpose it'd serve. As for improvements other than towns and stuff, I'd like to see denser forests, some larger beaches on the south, preferably with some dunes or something and a range of plants added. I really, really want to see every building and every room enterable. Just my opinion, though. -
1) But it's just like what DayZ is. You go through a town, loot as much as you can and then you go into the woods (or not) and survive off of what you've looted. You can hunt too, but, if you're capable of shooting and remaining quiet in the woods, that's entirely doable anyway. 2) Yeah, maybe you claim you would. Fuck, you might actually like all of that if it was in game, though it'd make it ridiculously difficult (and things you're capable of doing IRL wouldn't be possible ingame for you either, as it'd be set for the lowest common denominator). But the vast, vast majority of people would not. So get over it. Your opinion alone does not matter. It's what the majority of people want. 3) Survival is incredibly possible if you know what to eat, how to navigate, how to build shelters and how to purify water... So... Kind of a ridiculous premise you had there. 4) We are a social species. Sure. But isolation alone rarely means 100% that you're going to go insane - especially in a survival situation (people come out of those with forms of PTSD sometimes, of course, but that's not due to the isolation and it's pretty manageable unless very extreme). 5) Hermits. The main reason we had to band together was because we needed groups to hunt or defend ourselves from other groups of humans. You don't need groups to hunt if you have a gun. If you come across a group of players ingame, unless you're very good at evasion or PVP, they'll kill you. No lack of realism here. It's a game. It's never going to be gruelingly realistic. But even if it was, people would still be able to survive by themselves. I understand it at the point where somebody gets shot that, realistically, there's a high chance that they're going to die, but that's the case even if you have a group. You're not going to have sterile conditions in which to operate on somebody. It's incredibly unlikely that you would survive being shot with or without other people. How are you going to claim that you want serious realism and then have everybody be skilled surgeons? But, as a lone wolf, it's easier to be stealthy and avoid getting shot. Most lone wolves will tell you that.
-
No. One, there are plenty of people who are entirely capable of surviving on their own. Even without any real training. I grew up going to festivals and learned small things here and there. Last year, I went out in to the Forest of Dean for a week with a phone, a big bag of food and a sleeping bag. It was fun. Honestly, if you'd literally go insane not interacting with people on a regular basis, you're incredibly weak minded. Sorry, but it's true. And as for realism, how about we make it so very few people can actually shoot effectively, then? How about we make the survivors as unfit as real people are? How about making your character persist even when you're offline, sleeping? How about the majority of people not knowing how to skin an animal? Fuck, there's plenty of people who can't even cook. Crafting bows? Nope. Crafting knives? Nope. Crafting backpacks other than a courier bag? Nope. Repairing clothing? Nope. Gun maintenance? Nope. Getting fat if you stuff yourself a lot? Losing limbs? Nope. Paralysis? Nope. Not respawning? Nope. Forget sniping. Repairing a car? Nope. Driving large vehicles? Nope. Driving aircraft or boats? Fuck no. I could go on and on. The game will never be truly realistic, because it's a game. It's not meant to be a gruelingly difficult 100% accurate simulator. The goal has been described as authenticity over realism. Get over it. And don't project. Just because you think that you'd be unable to survive alone doesn't mean that others couldn't. Believe it or not, there's a lot of instinct when it comes to survival. That's how humans survived thousands of years ago. While I play as a lone wolf, I'm entirely happy for some things to be impossible for me to do alone. But if they're large features that don't have proper, balanced alternatives, it's kind of bullshit. The point of the game is that it doesn't have 'hard skills'. Limiting what people can do just because some people can't is unfair on those who do know how to do something.

kos vs. being a filthy sniper with a fetish for violence
Beizs replied to gcriseightysix's topic in General Discussion
I appreciate snipers and kosers making the game more interesting for me. You add a tense feel to the game and provide me with people to kill. However, do not try to claim that you're some kind of badass or that you're skilled when you're using a Mosin with a LRS to snipe people. It's not difficult. It's not cool. It's something that people who are too scared to actually confront a person head on do. If I get killed by somebody who is in close or mid quarters combat with me, I feel great after that fight. I think 'wow, that guy was good' or I critique my own plays to improve myself. If I get sniped, there's no experience there. It's just 'Boom, dead.' It's impossible to hide from every sniper spot and, especially with Ghillie, it's almost impossible to spot forest or hilltop snipers. So, again, no skill involved. I'll never respect you for sniping. I consider most snipers (other than those actually pulling off really impressive shots, like regularly hitting people well past effective range etc) to be people who are bad at the game. But you do add to it. So I'll not tell you that you shouldn't snipe, either. -
Yeah, doesn't make much sense imo, but just how it is. :P

There's not enough good forest any more. I play as a lone wolf, sometimes crafting anything I can and hunting for my food, sometimes collecting the best gear I possibly can. In both instances, however, once I get well geared, I move in to the forest, set up a stockpile and play about with the various survival features/mechanics currently in DayZ, visiting towns regularly in the hopes of meeting a player. Now, I've not yet had a single stockpile found, which is pretty awesome. Lose a lot of stuff to the persistence wipes and start over, but that's actually fairly nice (though it can get frustrating when you're trying to decide what to sacrifice). However, even when I've been deep in the woods, in the middle of nowhere, I've seen people. A fair few times. This shows that the map isn't particularly well spaced out at all. I like seeing people, but I just kind of think 'but the chances of meeting somebody in the middle of a forest should be pretty damn low'. I'm sure that, once vehicles are in and people run at reasonable speeds, there'll be less travelers running through forests, but other than that, it's kind of crappy imo. The new towns are kind of nice, but, at the same time, the majority of them do nothing but take up space. They're not interesting locations, they've not got any worthwhile lootspawns and they're almost always dead. There's a fair few towns in the NW that I've yet to see a single zombie in, even right after server restarts. I think that, if they can't extend the map, they need to make the forests denser. I've also noticed that depending on your graphical settings, people, items and tents can be completely hidden by trees or, actually, fairly visible. This is an issue in a game where hiding stockpiles and tents is a moderately large feature. You might place your stockpile somewhere that you need to tab to see it for you, but another person might be able to see it from a hundred meters away. I still miss the old views though. Don't get me wrong, still plenty of beautiful areas, but I don't really see the point of the majority of the new towns.
-
Why not get a hunting backpack? Extra six slots and fairly camo'd. An improvised leather backpack would also give you an extra slot along with better (imo) camouflage. Bear in mind that, while it's convenient to have more space, filling your clothes up actually results in more damage being taken.
-
So, I want beer & cider brewing added to the game. Why, you ask? Not for the novelty, no. Once the water is more realistic (as in, you can't just go and drink from anywhere), it'll be dangerous to drink without a purification method. You could use purification tabs, but they're a pain to find. You could boil water (which should be added), but you have to handle having a big, smoky fire (or tiny amounts at a time on a gas cooker) and you lose some due to evaporation (I'd say 10%). Both of these are nice, but they're not really long term solutions. Brewing is. In the good ol' days, water was dangerous to drink... So people drank alcohol instead. The alcohol kills off the majority of bacteria and everything's safe and lovely. So, how would this work - and how would it be a good balance with the other methods? + Renewability To begin brewing, you first go ahead and collect the starter materials. You'll need some yeast (common spawn in kitchens as it's used to make bread), a container (any size'll do, but it'd be good to have some barrels added) and a sugar source of some kind. You could use rice, grain (from fields), corn (they should add cornfields to the game), apples from orchards or just about any other fruit you can get your hands on. The list is fairly extensive. I'd use apples though, as they have the benefit of being fully renewable. Then you'll want a secondary, open container to juice the ingredients in (think something like the frying pan or cooking pot), along with something to filter the bits out (rags'll do). Next, you'll need to prepare stuff. Get the juice out of your thing of choice by crushing it real good in the container. Next, use the 'filter' to remove the solid matter, transferring the liquid into your brewing container, be it a canteen, water bottle or barrel. Now you add the yeast and leave it for a while to brew. Once it's done, you can use it up however you see fit (empty it in to containers and get brewing again right away). You can reuse the yeast in the container as it breeds and all you need to do is to apple picking again. I feel like for the sake of gameplay, the amount of juice you get from a single item should probably be exaggerated. Maybe three apples to a canteen's worth. Perhaps water it down with 'dirty' water (you'd filter it to remove any solid stuff though, along with the solid food matter) to decrease alcohol content for avoiding effects and increase volume. Juice should be drinkable, but it should go off fairly quickly, hence the brewing process. This system would allow you to build up a reservoir of drinks at your home with a bit of work, which is, coincidentally, the negative. +Discretion & Volume This is preferable to boiling water in some ways as it removes the need for a campfire and allows for large quantities to be processed at once with relative ease and safety. +Nutritional Value Beer would work like the cans of beer in game. It'd be beneficial as it'd give you hydration and energy in the same amount of space as the water. It should probably be a little more nutritious than canned beer, imo. You could also eat the mush from whatever you use as your sugar source... Waste not want not, I guess. - Work This system obviously takes a bit of work. While it's nothing massive, especially if you set up base somewhere near an orchard, it's something. This makes it more of a pain than just using water tabs, but far more reliable. The stores also could be found, which could tip off people to the presence of a nearby base (though they'd not be too obvious). - Drinking Effects I think that there should be some effects from drinking alcohol, but nothing absolutely awful. Add a slight blur to the screen for a short period after consumption and possibly some mildly increased sway, but you'd build up a tolerance very quickly and it'd be fairly low alcohol content. So, what do you guys think? I simplified the process to make it reasonable for gameplay, but I think that it could actually be an interesting mechanic which would provide some real benefits as a replacement for water, while still remain balanced. Would also be funny to be able to leave it brewing for longer and not water it down to get your character pissed and watch him stumble around for a bit until it wears off, though that'd be entirely for the novelty (or, actually, you could use it as animal traps? Not sure how inclined a wild animal would be to drink alcohol, but maybe small animals could get wasted off of it and fall asleep near an open container you leave out). For all of those lone wolf players out there (myself included) I think this'd add a whole new level to the survival aspect of the game. Great feel, good mechanics and fairly justified.

Found my first V3S today, just north out of the forest on Green Mountain. Drove a few hundred meters to Sosnovka. Found another. Funny thing is, neither was a spawnpoint on the map. I proceeded to screenshot and ditch the both of them. Not fun to drive. Feel super slow, run super loud and handle like a barge. Awesome to see them in game and working though. I may have crashed them slightly.
