They could mute that player or play on a server that doesn't allow hate speech. Or here's a revolutionary idea; Ignore them. The fact that everyone would be careful about every single word coming out of their mouth does effect my gameplay. I live in the grown up world. The grown up world is where people speak freely and realize that people have opinions you wont like. It is a world where people will say hurtful things but you get over it because you are a grown up who realizes there are bigger issues than someone who doesn't know a thing about you screaming insults. If I was a child I would completely agree that no one should say anything mean or hurtful but I am an adult living in a grown up world so I accept people will randomly insult me for superficial reasons. There are plenty that agree with you and they play on servers that don't allow such language. You know.... The sensible option If dayz is too harsh perhaps your friend would enjoy Hello Kitty Online.

Mere words can not and will not hurt me. I would be more upset if someone shot my dayz character than if someone followed me around saying insults of any kind (Including how much my mother costs or racism). If you don't like what someone says on dayz you are free to try and kill them. When I join a server that has strict policies on what people say, I quit that server and join another one. Why? Because I don't want to be on a server filled with sensitive little babies, I want to be on a server where anything goes, Where I have no idea what will happen next and nothing can be predicted. If my only choice is to play on those servers then I will find another game where children aren't allowed because my fun is destroyed when everyone in dayz uses manners. In fact racism adds to my gaming experience, It makes it feel real because racists are everywhere in the real world. Why don't you do the opposite of me and join a server which bans people for foul language? If you did that then you wouldn't encounter racism. In fact you could have fun, I could have fun, Everyone else could have fun and the entire issue disappears. I hope the devs do absolutely nothing because this is an issue each individual server should deal with since each server (In general) is run by different admin who believe different things are acceptable or unacceptable. Having a global list of morals on dayz is almost as appealing as eating a cactus.

I learned pretty early on ladders and stairs are your mortal enemy. They put you off guard by working perfectly fine 1000x and that is when they strike, They are the most ruthless enemy in Dayz. Sometimes they will execute you, Sometimes they will simply wait until you are in the middle of no where and break your legs, You will never know when they will strike but when they do you will be left wondering, What actually happened? Now you may have climbed a ladder and been sniped but there is also the possibility that the ladder decided you don't deserve to live and took your life, but waited until you were at the top so you would always wonder what really killed you. They are pure evil and strive to torture you for their sadistic pleasure. Beware the evil that is ladders and stairs. If you are in Elektro or Cherno on a high pop server you are probably being followed/stalked or someone nearby would want to kill you if they knew you were there. I used to try and help people there, Offer canteens, Handguns and ammo. Every single time I go there, I end up in a firefight, melee battle or some people attempt to rob me. Not everyone is going to try smash in your skull but most will if given the chance so I don't suggest hanging around in one spot. Gave a guy a rifle, He immediately tried to shoot me but it jammed. Another screamed friendly while shooting his shotgun at me several times... Even after I spoke to him, He simply tried to get closer and shoot more while saying friendly. Now I have a rule, If anyone brings up their gun and it aims close to me they get shot. Also when in doubt about a person, Shoot them in the legs. People are unpredictable but they can be managed with practice.

As far as I can tell servers are online and working fine, I haven't had any trouble for hours nor have I lost any gear.

You can only buy so much bandwidth. They tend to use hundreds if not thousands of computers to attack which can still overwhelm. Dayz has been attacked, They have worked as hard as possible to stop the attack in a timely manner, I am very satisfied with what the devs have done and their dedication to getting the game back up as quickly as possible is very appreciated. I have zero complaints about how they have handled this situation In fact I have even more respect for them now. Servers Are Online

Only dayz? Plenty of gaming servers have been hit recently including xbox and playstation. Final fantasy XIV was hit last month, In October EA servers were also taken down. I could carry on but perhaps you should google it yourself.
