I don't have issues with spawning without tools and things but this game has no melee function at all you can't even punch anything. If you could at least knock things out or knock Zombies down and stomp them to death I would be happy. I have found an axe but it is unusable as a weapon.... I think you should spawn with something if not your own fists than a pipe. I mean in a situation like this your going to get a weapon whatever you can find. A branch a pipe laying in the street a wrench you know something. How many here would really walk around during this sort of thing unarmed. Sure many wouldn't have guns depending on where you live I myself own a lot but I am sure many have access to a shovel or axe and other such things. I wouldn't care about being without a gun if melee wasn't an issue.

I am new to Arma and I can't believe there is no melee function. I searched the net looking for info on how to use the controls and found that melee is impossible I was shocked. I just found an axe awhile ago and thought all right but was saddened to find it's about worthless. Anyone here saying that melee weapons should be breakable and stuff I think is an idiot. Yeah I can see issues with some things but say like pipes and stuff would require multiple hits to kill a Zombie an Axe say 2 hits a knife several more they don't need to be super powerful but really against a group or even another player it will be little use. I connected to a few servers where for whatever reason I had no gun I was unable to do much of anything. It wouldn't have been a major deal if I had at least a pipe, bat or crowbar even a knife. I just found a gun in one server but I never seen a single zombie in that one so I left.
