  1. "immersion will be defined as; moments during play when the players access their real world perception, reasoning skills or emotions (the primary frameworks of the player) to play the game or voluntarily adopt the game world as a primary world and reason from the characters point of view, rather than having to refer directly to the rules of the game" For me, the lack of UI does exactly this. When i play I'm not thinking about how much blood i have or how many damage points 9mm does, The designers have done a good job of removing from view these 'gamey' mechanics. I can forgive some obscurantism if it feels more realistic overall. Its an interesting discussion to have but I think the audio visual representation of the players senses are not anything like what they will be in 1.0 and its wrong to judge the concept overly harshly based on what we have now. I'm a fan of the status messages in the bottom left (gives the game an oldschool rougelike feel) but by the end of development i expect them to be almost completely replaced by sounds or visual effects. The difficulty with identifying people is a valid concern but hopefully with many more character models and more clothing options along with 'check pulse' it will get easier to identify people, if everyone stopped sprinting everywhere that would help too.
  2. Interesting idea. One problem i see with it is that after a while there will be hardly anyone on the server as people leave or die, which would suck for people looking for player interaction. I think the longer respawn timer concept mentioned in the status report might work better at creating a similar effect although it won't stop serverhopping related issues. To be honest I really don't see the point of the public hive, all it adds to the game is ways to break it.
  3. Well rocket did call it an anti game. How will anyone who knows how the mechanics work die from anything except pvp if it's a given that they will find the items they need to survive? There's no skill needed to make a fire or cure food poisoning in game, you just look it up on the internet. Futility suits the subject matter of the game very well in my opinion, the fact that they have introduced suicide reveals that the designers anticipate there being situations in which it is impossible to carry on. You can always respawn, the maze changes every time. Again if anyone who has done their research is always going to be able to survive the environmental threats they face these environmental threats are just pointless filler between player encounters. I have no problem with adding more ways to stay warm and dry as long as it doesn't make the game easier, turning whole systems into a sterile upkeep exercise sounds awful to me compared to the tension of possibly dying to wide range of threats at any time.
  4. Fair point but to be honest sometimes you are just going to die, it's supposed to be a hard game. If you know you'll find the items you need to make a fire every time there's no tension and they might as well have not put the temperature mechanic in. All the PvE elements at some point rely on finding certain items and are therefore luck based there's no getting around that. I disagree that reading a book isn't playing the game, your character is still in the game world and is affected by it. Things like temperature require people to adjust to a slower paced game but I think they will find it rewarding.

    More Bullpups

I was about to say the same thing. All the 5.56x45 bullpups would be pretty much the same in terms of gameplay and the modularity of the AUG makes adding others even more unnecessary. A commonly used bullpup in another cartridge might be worth adding but i don't know any.
  6. The Russian Altyn, K-63 and Rys-T all look pretty similar to me so i would say just add a new visor for the Gorka helmet in this style. There's already 3 different firefighters helmets, I don't think paramedic helmets are needed too. I voted against the fur hat because only because of the picture, if it was something better suiting the region like a Cossack fur hat i would have voted yes.

Status Report - Week of 05 Jan 15

The 'non intrusive group identification' is slightly worrying. I really hope it's not an immersion breaking UI element a la Arma but i can't think of anything else that would be more effective than the current method of having everyone wear the same hat.

Status Report - Week of 05 Jan 15

Hardcore mode sounds interesting although I'd rather a longer spawn time was forced on all servers, I doubt there will be many servers that will implement it by choice even though it would almost definitely be good for the game. The proliferation of 24/7 day shows that when given the choice people stick to what they know.

Is it too late for night time servers?

Having limited visibility is harder, human eyes are designed for the daytime. Obviously its the same for everyone in that specific server but just because everyone has the same handicap doesn't mean its not harder than playing a daytime server. Why would people turn their gamma and brightness up unless its easier when you can see more? People won't play at nighttime if its pretty, they will play at nighttime if it gives them some kind of advantage.

Is it too late for night time servers?

Obviously the new renderer will improve the visuals at night time but I don't think visuals are the reason people aren't playing after dark. However good it looks it will always be harder than daylight and as we know the majority will always go for the easy option. I think the new zombie ai has the potential to change the night time experience, As they're infected humans not undead they still need to sleep right? Perhaps after dark the they could sleep in heaps inside buildings kind of like the I Am Legend zombies reversed. This would make looting in cities easier at night, assuming of course that they significantly bump up the zombie numbers so they become a major threat. If that idea is too much then giving them reduced sight at night will have the same effect to a lesser extent.

Spawn with Radio instead of Flashlight

To be honest i think it would suffer the same fate that the torch does, to be discarded as soon as the space in the new spawns limited pockets is needed for food or a pistol or practically anything else. Radios are really common anyway, ease of finding one is not the issue here. Once the system is fleshed out and we get radios of variable range, rarity and functionality I think we'll see them being used a little more.

Opinions on teamspeak and DayZ SA?

Once long range radios are in and persistence is fully working it will be feasible to run a group without teamspeak but even then i doubt many people will do it. It's not great but it's one of those things we're going to have to live with. Perhaps you could get enough like minded people together to run a server with a no out of game communication rule but i can't see it becoming universal.

    The Ability to Pour Water

Pretty sure you can already pour water onto fires to put them out. You can also pour out Gas canisters. Hopefully this stuff to do with liquids gets universalized so blood, water, gas etc are interchangeable but with different effects.

    Leather Sack

This is pretty annoying detail to me me too, but there's already too many axes (fire axe, splitting axe and the planned hatchet) to add a felling axe. A saw is definitely needed although I'd prefer something slightly more heavy duty than what you suggest: As you said "for a specific task, use the tool that was designed for it." and if the tools are larger and can't be carried all by one person, that person's going to have to have interactions with other players which is what the game is all about.

    Goggles

TAC goggles are in the game files so it's highly likely they'll be added at some point.

    Surplus Wehrmacht uniforms/helmets

I don't think a complete WW2 era uniform would be very realistic, wouldn't have a massive problem with the helmet though: Russian infantry during the second Chechen war. "Sharoborina pushed to the side sitting next to soldiers - Look, a fighter who is this fascist come with you? Sasha laughed: - This is my chief of artillery. Nazi helmet took in battle in the First War, and he had as a mascot. As the battle to go as he puts it, and no it does not take a bullet. - The soldiers laughed, looking at the officer, taking the laughter and smiles of his inner tension." A Soviet uniform from the Afghan war would suit the setting better and might placate those wanting old fashioned military gear.
  17. No amount of additions to the map will make if feel like it did when you first started, the only thing you can do if you find Chernarus boring is wait for mod support. None of the location options in the poll suit the map very well in my opinion (execpt the prison obviously). I think there's already enough enough points of interest, if they add many more the map will lose too much of the empty wilderness that makes it great. If you look at the area the terrain is based on there's nowhere near the amount of towns and villages so it's pretty unrealistically built up already. There could definitely be a bigger variety of houses, but once the old towns down south are redone I'll be pretty happy with the map.

    Hot and cold food

Eating food hot should definitely be incentivized as much as possible, no one eats cold beans if they can help it. Hot food takes less energy to break down, so that could translate in giving slightly more energy in game.

Mosquitos, Signaling & Blankets, oh my.

Correct me if I'm wrong but i don't think you'd find mosquitoes carrying infectious diseases in Eastern Europe, there's plans for lots of other ways of transferring disease planned so no loss imo. Signaling is a nice idea, using torches and lamps to send Morse code would be really cool (although atm light doesn't travel far enough to make it viable). There's smoke grenades planned which could work for signaling helicopters. In regards to a VS-17 signal panel type thing it seems almost too specific to be useful (aircraft will be super rare). I think as long as it has multiple uses (could be used as a blanket too perhaps) i wouldn't say no.
  20. Reading this thread from all the way back in 2012 has got me really hyped for diseases, roll on Q1!

    Improvised ashwood bow/arrows are great.

When the devs were first talking about adding the improvised knife I was hoping that it would come in the form of a lump of flint which could crafted into a knife or arrowheads. We got the 'Small Stone' instead but it could be placeholder.

    cherno bell

The bell is probably rung by some kind of clockwork mechanism so i don't think there would be a belfry in which to ring it manually.

    Drinking/Eating Blood

I like the idea, in a survival situation you'd eat everything you could from an animal you killed. On a sightly unrelated point, it would be great if all liquids were interchangeable; fill a gas can with water from a pond, drink blood from a blood bag, decant disinfectant into a water bottle. They've gone part of the way with alcohol/disinfectant being drinkable but i think the new options it could open up would make it worth doing.

    Folding rifle stocks

I remember the devs saying they were working on a way for items to have dynamically changing size in the inventory so i think we'll probably see folding stocks become more useful at some point. One small thing, increased sway while using the underfolder would better simulate the issues with it rather than a loss of accuracy, it would have the same effect anyway.
