So what is the official reason for road signs and some billboards being written in Cyrillic?

    Status Report - 15 Oct 2015

Great status report, here's some questions: On the roadmap barricading comes before basebuilding but barricading seems to have fallen by the wayside ever since the fortified camp concepts were shown. Is barricading buildings still planned? I haven't seen much mention of the advanced crafting system (not crafting benches) recently, I think there was talk about a system similar to Stranded Deep were you put all the items you want to craft together in a pile on the ground, hold the right tool in your hand and then select what you want to make out of the raw materials. Is some method of crating more than two things together at a time still planned? How complex is the medical system going to get? When will wounds require more attention than the 1 rag cure all?
  3. Cool suggestion! I definitely think there should be some more old fashioned bolt action rifles, and more low tier weapons in general. Looks like it's pretty rare though, especially the rechambered 7.62x54r version but you could say the same about quite a lot of the guns already ingame.

How to Fix the Fashion Issue

That does look like fun but I think it would be more fun if more careful monitoring of body temperature was necessary during such adventures. I live in the UK and go hiking a fair bit, when it rains heavily (which it almost always does) you get wet and cold and miserable whatever you are wearing. This doesn't matter because you can go home to get warm and dry but if that wasn't possible, due to the apocalypse for example, then you could end up with health issues ranging from hypothermia to the common cold. I don't want people to stop playing the game when it's raining, I just want to see a wider range of the mechanics related to keeping warm utilised.

    Anti-stab vest

Very informative post! One of the major changes that i remember the devs talking about in regards to the new damage system is separating melee and ballistic damage so I imagine there will be a big change to how things like the anti stab vest works in 0.59.

How to Fix the Fashion Issue

How about instead of making more clothing waterproof, make the 100% waterproof clothing less so? It's not realistic or a good game mechanic to have clothing that completely negates the effect of rain. You should still get wet and cold from standing around in the rain whatever you're wearing, getting wet should be something you inevitably have to deal with not something you never think about again once you find a raincoat or gorka. There is lot's of ways to avoid getting too wet, it doesn't have to mean sitting in a house until the rain stops: heatpacks and improvised heatpacks made by warming an object in a fire, traveling using tree cover, traveling using building cover, sprinting to stay warm, campfires and probably more. All these mechanics are ignored due to the abundance of waterproof clothing, exacerbating this problem is a bad idea. A more granular approach to water resistant clothing could solve the fashion issue and encourage tactical decision making, more waterproof clothes would make rain irrelevant.

Day Z as it should be : The Earth Abides

Sure you'd have to put in a lot of time to get the amount of gear that is standard currently but is enjoyment really so inextricably linked to the amount of gear you have? I think that for most people the enjoyment is in the journey and the interactions (PvP or friendly). The fun should start once you spawn not once you're geared and a great story can happen whether you have a hundred bullets or just one.
  8. A single hive for 1st person and 3rd person public servers is a very good idea. I'm not a fan of any type of "hardcore mode" though because it would be even less popular than 1pp is. The majority will always go for the the easy option as seem by the lack of people on 1st person servers and the popularity of "high loot" servers, so the vanilla game should be as 'hardcore' as it possibly can be and casuals will either get used to it or wait for the inevitable easy mode mods.

    Curiosity peaked

It's not entirely impossible that we'll get some kind of RPG, rocket launchers were mentioned in the last status report: However I do agree with others that it should be possible to bring down a heli with a rifle.

    Status Report - 23 Sept 2015

Great status report. Initially not a fan of the change to reloading, i was a big fan of the dragging mechanic but i do see the benefit to immersion of not having to go into the inventory. If this change comes along with an animation for reloading magazines and the hotbar being restricted to certain easy to access pockets (vests and trousers, jackets only without a vest over the top perhaps?) then i think it will work well.

    The Little Things

The problem with a newspaper is that realistically, it should be written in Chernarussian(Czech). There's no reason for English language newspapers to be floating around in my opinion however the devs may disagree seeing as most of the books in game are in English. On that note i would love it if they added some books in Czech and Russian to the mix, it would really add to the immersion. 'Civilized' animals like rats, pigeons, cats and dogs turned feral would be great. Packs of dogs would be a much better fit as hostile animals than wolves and mousetraps could work the same way for rats that snares do for rabbits Generally the food situation should be less of a hunter and farmers paradise and more like the siege of Leningrad, necessity requiring the eating of rats, cats, candle wax and even each other. One other thing, it would be really interesting to hear from someone from the Czech Republic on what common household items you would find in rural areas IRL that are missing in game.

    Status Report - 09 Sept

It's always good to see the devs engaging with the community but I have some reservations about this "Community Combat Scrum". I don't believe that these big name streamers with have much valuable insight to give the devs, the instant gratification play style that is popular on twitch is completely at odds with the direction the game is supposedly taking (see the comments the devs made about coastal deathmatch when the CLE first dropped). What kind of issues are important to these PvP focused players? I imagine all they'll want to talk about is desync. I also don't agree with this stance some people seem to have that the two main playstyles are PvPer or Hermit, that you either shoot everyone you see or avoid them. Dayz has always been about interaction and i don't think that a playstyle based around avoiding interaction should be encouraged by game mechanics. These survival elements making their way into the game like farming, hunting, base building and crafting should not be seen as utilities for 'Hermits' to play with while hiding from 'PvPers' but as a way to push players together, to encourage cooperation with the goal of survival. It will be interesting to hear exactly what contaminated terrain means, I can't help but imagine horribly unrealistic clouds of green gas and cliche barrels of toxic waste. Hopefully the devs have something more interesting and realistic up their sleeves.

Remember when one bullet killed you?

There is definitely some issues and inconsistencies in the damage system. In 'laboratory conditions' 7.62x54 kills in one body shot and 5.45x39 kills in two but it always seems to take much more than that in a firefight. According to Hicks in one of the pax streams, the new damage system is being implemented in .59 so hopefully we'll see an increase in realism or at least consistency then. The new player controller is most likely not far away either, which will improve the situation massively (wound states, limping etc).

    Coastal clam digging

Nice idea! Foraging seems like it's going to be an important part of the game in the future, there's lots of fruit, berries and mushrooms in the gamefiles. The seashore is definitely an area that should be not be overlooked as a source of food, as well as clams there could be mussels, winkles and oysters, whatever is native to the region. It would be amazing if they could made the sea have tides, so that at low tide you would go down the beach to dig for shellfish.

    Base "things"

Some very good points made over in that thread, I can definitely agree that making it 'not worth it' is the best way to deter intruders. I think people valuing their characters life more (through the implementation of new mechanics and ramping up of the difficulty in general), will be one of the most important pieces of base defense. When dying to a random landmine means more than just a 30 minute run back to your body it's safe to say people are less likely to risk it. Cant say i can quite imagine people organizing a 24hr guard rotation system for their base, although it would be pretty cool.

    T-72 In the works?

+1 The 'future war' setting of Arma 3 was a real turn off for me.

    pre .59 hype

I'm glad there's no loot in the old wrecked vehicles anymore, it made no sense finding a pristine AK in a corroded and burnt out Humvee.

    Atmosphere and environment

I get your point but that pic looks like a tropical region, and therefore that type of fog most likely wouldn't suit Chernarus either. I'm not quite sure what kind of fog would suit the map, seeing as the terrain is from the landlocked Czech Republic but it's situated on the Black sea. I imagine the devs will base the fog formations on what they have observed locally in the Czech Republic, although that wont be quite right because the sea has a big effect on the weather.

    Base "things"

An important thing to think about when talking about base building in Dayz is that if the game is to maintain a sense of realism (in opposition to "10 c4 needed to blow up this wooden wall") even the Hesco barrier bases will be far more transient than what you see in other survival games (rust etc). Even surrounded by mines and tripwires it will most likely be pretty easy for unwanted visitors to gain access. What this implies is that the facilities within a base are unlikely to get very complex as they could very easily be destroyed and it therefore wont be worth making advanced mechanical constructions. I have always liked the idea of some kind of sleeping mechanic (+ sleeping bags) if only for the immersion factor. Making alcohol should definitely be possible, Cider is very easy to make and there's certainly an abundance of apples. I don't know much about distilling but as long as it doesn't require a lot of specialist equipment to set up a jury-rigged distillery then it would be a great addition. As you say the barrels in game already do a good job as water storage (while combining that use with many others), don't really see the need for a larger container which would also have transportation issues. Irrigation systems and plumbing are unnecessary in my opinion, watering plants with a canteen is perfectly fine however i would love to see agriculture become more complex in general: soil type, sunlight and shade, water content of the soil and pests all being factors to consider. A bicycle powered electricity generator would be quite interesting to see (once/if we get bikes) and the same kind of motor required for that could probably be used in a windmill or waterwheel.

    Atmosphere and environment

Fog is planned, hopefully it will work similarly to how it does in Arma 3. This is a really interesting idea, it would be great to see if it's feasible.

    DayZ on Linux Maybe!

Awesome! This is a certainly a step in the right direction. I remember Dean saying quite early on in development that he wanted to see DayZ on Linux, I hope it's still on the cards.
  22. This is so true. Its a beautiful sight to see, a squad of heavily geared guys riding around in a tiny beat up car.
  23. Totally agree with your points, running around with the inventory open hoovering gear up sucks. I don't think the vicinity window is necessary at all, it's useful when stuff is glitched under the floor or invisible but that wont be an issue for ever.

Can Someone Explain What This Means?

This is the reference from the last status report: I'm feeling slightly skeptical to be honest, not sure how weapon progression is going to work if there's military weapons in the center of the map. Use the CLE to confine high grade civilian weapons like the SKS and Model 70 to mid-map towns like Stary, keep military weapons far west.
  25. B4GEL

What's the fascination with having pristine clothes?

Yep It's useful for bugfixing but that wont be necessary for ever.
